[00:01:00] Hey, this is Shelby with Whiskey Riff
[00:01:02] I know you might hear a different voice than you're used to
[00:01:05] And we are starting a new series backstage at the Grand Ole Opry
[00:01:09] And my name is Quinn Eaton
[00:01:11] I'm also a part of the Whiskey Riff team
[00:01:13] I'm a writer but happy to get into this part of the business as well
[00:01:17] And yeah, the backstage at the Opry interviews
[00:01:20] Occasionally might do Zoom as well
[00:01:23] But we're excited to get to sit down and speak to some people
[00:01:26] And one person that we got to talk to today was Shane Smith
[00:01:29] And it was a great interview
[00:01:31] I don't know if you want to tease anything about it, Shelby
[00:01:33] Yeah, I mean he is great
[00:01:35] And for him to have his Grand Ole Opry debut 10 years in is kind of crazy
[00:01:40] So we definitely touched on that
[00:01:41] His new album and his hangover cure
[00:01:44] And he was kind enough to give us plenty of time
[00:01:46] So without further ado here's the interview with Shane Smith
[00:01:56] We are backstage at the Grand Ole Opry with Shane Smith of Shane Smith and the Saints
[00:02:08] And one thing I can't get over is your career has probably been 10 plus years in the making
[00:02:14] Yet somebody who will probably look at you and think you guys are all an overnight success
[00:02:21] What do you attribute that success to especially recently?
[00:02:24] I think just hard work
[00:02:25] I mean, I started this in 2009
[00:02:30] So it's been a pretty long time
[00:02:33] And I just think we've just worked really hard to get here
[00:02:38] And always left it all out on stage
[00:02:41] Never really...I don't know
[00:02:44] Just like every show was like a full send
[00:02:47] And I think that hard work and that effort has kind of manifested into some great stuff
[00:02:53] Finally for us
[00:02:54] It just took a long time to start coming back around
[00:02:58] And you talk about hard work and effort
[00:03:02] Does it feel like your Grand Ole Opry debut is kind of a long time coming at this point?
[00:03:06] Is that something that you kind of feel personally?
[00:03:09] We've been in such a different lane than a lot of mainstream country
[00:03:12] And I think this venue is very much associated with country music
[00:03:17] And that traditional sound
[00:03:19] And we're much more of like a full crock sound
[00:03:22] And so while it was always kind of up in the clouds
[00:03:26] As this incredible accomplishment
[00:03:29] It was also something in a little bit of a separate lane, I feel like from us
[00:03:34] And regardless there was always a dream of like, yeah, maybe we could be asked to do that
[00:03:40] I just wasn't sure that we were ever going to be asked necessarily
[00:03:43] And so, yeah, it's amazing
[00:03:45] I mean, it's a total honor
[00:03:47] I mentioned this in an interview earlier
[00:03:49] But to me it's not just the venue
[00:03:51] It's the culmination of all the artists and performers
[00:03:56] That have been nervous backstage here
[00:03:59] And like, have grinded to be nervous backstage here
[00:04:03] You know, to get to that place of nervousness
[00:04:05] And just all that energy and all that effort and the grind, if you will
[00:04:10] You know, it all culminates into this place
[00:04:12] And it's just cool to be a part of that, you know
[00:04:15] So that's kind of how I feel about it
[00:04:17] Being backstage at the Grindelwald right now
[00:04:19] Do you think that you feel that nervous energy?
[00:04:21] Or what is the energy that you would describe?
[00:04:23] Honestly, I'm not really nervous about this
[00:04:26] I'm really, I feel really good about it
[00:04:28] At the end of the day, you know, it's like we get to knock out three songs
[00:04:32] And then party and hang out with all of our family and our friends
[00:04:35] And so I'm more or less just excited to play that last note
[00:04:40] See everybody having a good time and just soak it in from there, you know
[00:04:44] I don't know, similar to like an athlete or something
[00:04:47] I mentioned this in that interview too
[00:04:49] I definitely am more like, you know, let's go do what we gotta do
[00:04:53] And then celebrate after, I guess, you know
[00:04:57] It's been a big year playing the Rhymon
[00:04:59] Playing Red Rocks, now the Opry
[00:05:02] Is there any other bucket list venue on your list?
[00:05:05] Royal Albert Hall in London is a, we're getting to do that in May
[00:05:11] That's gonna be incredible, I'm really excited about that
[00:05:14] And we're headlining Red Rocks for a second time this year in May as well
[00:05:19] And Willie's Fourth of July Pigment, that was another
[00:05:22] You know, that was a big one for me and getting to do his ranch last year and all that
[00:05:26] So yeah, there's been a lot of really cool ones
[00:05:29] And this is just continuing on with that
[00:05:32] So, of course, anytime you're playing a venue
[00:05:35] You're getting to share that music that you've been working on
[00:05:38] With fans that are super connected to you guys
[00:05:41] What's that five-year gap look like, of course?
[00:05:43] Like you have that sort of delay in your music release
[00:05:47] So what made you get back into the studio?
[00:05:51] I mean, fans needed new music
[00:05:54] It had been years and we were just busy
[00:05:57] I mean, we were, I feel like, okay
[00:06:00] So, you know, COVID happened
[00:06:02] And everybody got this downtime
[00:06:03] And I think everyone was kind of like
[00:06:05] Why wouldn't you put a record out then or something?
[00:06:07] But I think COVID was the first time
[00:06:10] We were like forced to stop touring
[00:06:12] And we were doing like 200, one year
[00:06:15] I think we did 240 shows in a year or something like that
[00:06:18] And it's like, that's outrageous
[00:06:20] You know, when you really put that on paper
[00:06:22] In the amount of days that you're gone
[00:06:24] That aren't show days as well
[00:06:27] And I think COVID kind of forced us to be off
[00:06:31] And I think that was the only consecutive month
[00:06:34] That we were ever off as a band
[00:06:36] And so that was the last thing we were thinking about
[00:06:39] Was writing new music or putting out new music
[00:06:41] We were just like home and it was like
[00:06:43] Oh my god, this is incredible
[00:06:44] You know, and so
[00:06:46] But then, yeah
[00:06:47] I mean, fast forward a couple years
[00:06:49] And you know, my manager, our band
[00:06:52] Everybody is like, we need to put a new record out
[00:06:54] Like yesterday
[00:06:55] So the pressure was on
[00:06:58] But again, we were very busy all of last year
[00:07:01] So we had to find little days here and there
[00:07:03] When we could get into the studio
[00:07:05] Track a song, fly back to the bus
[00:07:08] Fly back to Dallas
[00:07:09] Track another song, maybe song and a half
[00:07:11] Fly back to the bus
[00:07:13] And it was like that for like eight or nine months
[00:07:15] This past year
[00:07:16] And so finally got a record done though
[00:07:19] And just stoked to have it out there
[00:07:22] So
[00:07:22] Yeah, congratulations with any record
[00:07:24] You know, when you go in the studio
[00:07:26] You mentioned that you're not necessarily
[00:07:27] Traditional country
[00:07:29] It's more like folk rock
[00:07:31] So who are your musical influences
[00:07:33] That really is fine
[00:07:35] You know, you're not required to hire this record
[00:07:37] Or any all your music really
[00:07:39] I mean a lot
[00:07:40] It's very different depending on the band member as well
[00:07:44] Like Bennett leans hard into like the Appalachian
[00:07:46] Folk
[00:07:47] Bluegrass side of things
[00:07:49] Chase totally across the board
[00:07:52] From bluegrass to
[00:07:54] You know, hip hop and rap and
[00:07:56] You know, same thing with like Stover
[00:07:59] Dustin is more like 80s
[00:08:01] Like Anthem Rock
[00:08:02] I feel like
[00:08:04] Like I grew up listening to a lot of oldies music
[00:08:06] Like
[00:08:08] Righteous brothers
[00:08:09] Four tops
[00:08:10] Temptations
[00:08:12] Al Green
[00:08:13] Otis Redding
[00:08:13] Stuff like that
[00:08:14] And then later on
[00:08:17] My brothers were listening to a lot of alternative rock
[00:08:19] And my cousin was listening to
[00:08:21] Singer songwriters
[00:08:23] Like Guy Clark
[00:08:24] And Ryan Bingham was just coming up at that time
[00:08:27] And Adam Carroll
[00:08:29] Hace Carl
[00:08:29] All these figures
[00:08:31] And so it's a weird combination
[00:08:32] I mean across the board
[00:08:34] And I think at the end of the day we just
[00:08:35] You know, you try to write music that you think is cool to you and all of that stuff
[00:08:41] You know
[00:08:41] All those creaks lead to one like river, you know, and
[00:08:45] And I think our sound is a
[00:08:49] Direct
[00:08:51] You know
[00:08:51] Result of that
[00:08:52] So
[00:08:53] That's what I mean
[00:08:53] One of the other questions is
[00:08:55] Is there an era of music that kind of inspires you guys the most
[00:08:58] But it seems like it's just a melting pot
[00:08:59] Yeah, it's a melting pot
[00:09:01] Or I think it's absolutely a melting pot for sure
[00:09:04] Going back to your name, Shane Smith and the Saints
[00:09:07] Did you guys all start out with a different name or did it evolve?
[00:09:09] We had at one point it was like
[00:09:12] In like 2009
[00:09:14] And 10
[00:09:15] And 11
[00:09:16] Or it was like it was Shane Smith
[00:09:18] And then there was Shane Smith
[00:09:20] And the six gun saints
[00:09:23] And then it was like
[00:09:24] Ray Wiley Hubbard
[00:09:25] And his wife
[00:09:26] We had just met them in Austin
[00:09:28] And she was like managing us
[00:09:30] Judy was
[00:09:32] And Ray was just like
[00:09:34] Shane your band name's
[00:09:36] Way too long
[00:09:37] You needed light and it was like okay
[00:09:39] We'll cut a couple syllables
[00:09:41] And so they landed at Shane Smith and the Saints
[00:09:43] And we just kept rolling with that
[00:09:45] So didn't really have a reason to change it
[00:09:48] A lot of S's
[00:09:49] It's a tongue twister
[00:09:50] But is what it is
[00:09:51] Sometimes alliteration is good
[00:09:53] People remember it
[00:09:54] So that's definitely fun
[00:09:55] Another thing that people remember
[00:09:56] Is the energy that you guys bring
[00:09:58] To the stage
[00:09:59] Can you speak on where that comes from
[00:10:01] Or is it just a natural thing that happens
[00:10:02] Whenever you guys get out there
[00:10:04] I mean I can tell you at the Ryman show
[00:10:06] It was electric
[00:10:07] I don't think I've ever seen the Ryman that way
[00:10:08] And I've been a handful of times
[00:10:09] Since moving here now
[00:10:11] And the energy in that room was crazy
[00:10:13] Now I'm on the balcony
[00:10:14] So I'm putting it on the floor
[00:10:15] That was a magical night
[00:10:17] And it's cool because it dropped so low
[00:10:20] At one point
[00:10:21] Like it was real quiet and real like
[00:10:23] You could just hear a pin drop in there
[00:10:25] During like
[00:10:27] Some of the slower songs
[00:10:28] And I think the energy is just like
[00:10:31] I just really
[00:10:33] I feel better about the music
[00:10:36] About the show
[00:10:37] About the fans
[00:10:38] Everything when I know that I left
[00:10:40] Absolutely everything out there
[00:10:42] And I find that
[00:10:44] If I don't do that
[00:10:45] I feel like I can walk away
[00:10:47] Being like well I
[00:10:49] Maybe could have done a little bit better
[00:10:50] Something
[00:10:51] But it really
[00:10:53] It makes me sleep good at night
[00:10:54] Just knowing that
[00:10:55] You really are just giving it a full send
[00:10:58] Whether it's 10 people in the audience
[00:11:00] Which for years it was
[00:11:03] To 10,000
[00:11:06] That's how I feel about it
[00:11:07] And I've tried since day one
[00:11:09] To really just go all out
[00:11:11] And I think the rest of the guys are the same
[00:11:14] And something I'm sure you've been told over the years
[00:11:16] Is that you have a very unique voice
[00:11:19] When I hear your voice on certain songs
[00:11:20] You definitely remind me of someone
[00:11:22] But is there
[00:11:23] You get compared to anyone else vocally?
[00:11:26] You know my voice has changed over the years
[00:11:28] Because I've had so much damage to it
[00:11:30] Like when we were doing all the six-tree years
[00:11:33] Of like playing on six-tree
[00:11:34] You would be doing like four hour sets
[00:11:37] But all the time the band after you would like cancel
[00:11:40] And so we would end up taking their four hour set as well
[00:11:43] So you'd be playing like eight hours a night oftentimes
[00:11:46] And my voice would just blow out
[00:11:48] Like all the time and all that scar tissue
[00:11:51] Like I was supposed to have surgery on it years ago
[00:11:53] And I went to this vocal therapist
[00:11:56] To try to prevent having to do that
[00:11:58] And I took like two weeks off or something
[00:12:01] And she gave me these warm-ups
[00:12:02] And it literally like saved me
[00:12:04] Because as long as I do that every night
[00:12:07] Like I'm good
[00:12:07] But as a result of all that damage
[00:12:10] Like it's kind of landed it in this really different
[00:12:14] I had to sing lower in a lower register
[00:12:17] Because I stopped being able to sing higher at one point
[00:12:21] And now it's because of those warm-ups and those exercises
[00:12:24] Like I've gotten a really big range of high and low
[00:12:27] And but it has kind of like that worn out type of thing to it
[00:12:31] I guess as a result of that
[00:12:32] So I'm just like trying to cruise in the lane that I'm in right now
[00:12:36] And you know try not to start you know
[00:12:40] Smoking reds anytime soon or anything like that
[00:12:43] The first time I heard Adeline
[00:12:45] I heard a lot of Johnny Cash in it
[00:12:46] Which I'm sure you heard a lot
[00:12:47] So that's why I'm wondering if you ever get to hear to anyone else
[00:12:49] I'm sure Johnny Cash
[00:12:50] Yeah Johnny Cash, Eddie Vedder
[00:12:52] Like I don't know
[00:12:55] There's random ones
[00:12:57] Colter Wall on certain you know
[00:12:59] Especially with my voice is really like
[00:13:01] Horse or whatever you know I'll get that
[00:13:03] And but yeah it's just it's changed a lot over the years
[00:13:06] If you listen to our early albums of us
[00:13:08] Compared to now it honestly is like totally different sounding
[00:13:11] And I like where it's at now
[00:13:13] I'm thankful for where it's at now
[00:13:14] I'm thankful that you know that
[00:13:16] I think the damage was a blessing in a way
[00:13:18] And so I'm just trying to roll with it
[00:13:21] Keep recording music you know with where it's at right now
[00:13:25] And even on your new album Northeer
[00:13:27] It seems like your voice has an opportunity
[00:13:29] To shine in different ways from track to track
[00:13:31] So just kind of talking about was that
[00:13:34] An inspiration going in to kind of change pace
[00:13:37] Vocally from song to song or what was that
[00:13:39] Inspiration for you guys whenever you put the albums together
[00:13:43] So my wife was big on like she really
[00:13:46] Tried to push me to like do a little more like falsetto stuff
[00:13:51] As well as the baritone as well as the spring steam
[00:13:55] Just yelling you know type of stuff
[00:13:57] And give more of a dynamic and that she's been saying that
[00:14:00] For years and years and as a result of those vocal
[00:14:03] Like I was saying the warm-ups and stuff
[00:14:05] I've developed somewhat of a falsetto
[00:14:07] And so it has a wider range I think with intention
[00:14:11] Of trying to push myself to see what I can do with it
[00:14:15] You know and it's been a while in parts
[00:14:18] Is baritone in other parts it's kind of falsetto-y
[00:14:20] In other parts it's just a roller coaster
[00:14:23] You know and I think a lot of the songs are the same so
[00:14:27] The other part of the inspiration on the album is
[00:14:29] You guys are from Texas but you have a lot of songs
[00:14:32] That are about the mountains or out west maybe beyond Texas
[00:14:36] And how does that all fall into your Texas roots
[00:14:40] I mean it's just years of touring the country
[00:14:43] You know and all over the place
[00:14:46] And we would be gone for years and years
[00:14:50] We'd be gone for like a lot of time and away from home
[00:14:53] And you would make new little homes in these little pockets
[00:14:57] Of fans you know like up in Idaho
[00:15:00] Like you know the Sawtooth mountain area
[00:15:02] Like you know we've got like a almost like a
[00:15:05] Home away from home type of vibe there
[00:15:07] And same thing up in Oregon and Oklahoma City
[00:15:10] Was like that for us I don't know
[00:15:12] It's you can't help but sing about you know
[00:15:16] The people and the places and stories that you develop
[00:15:21] Throughout those years of touring so
[00:15:23] And what's one song off the new album that you're most proud of
[00:15:27] And then maybe what's another song that has gotten a reaction
[00:15:30] From fans that you're a little surprised by
[00:15:33] Man I'm really it's like the simplest song on the album
[00:15:37] But to me it hits like really deep is all the way
[00:15:41] I wrote with my wife and there's just something to that song
[00:15:45] That feels really timeless to me you know like out of all of them
[00:15:48] And one that I think I'm a little bit surprised
[00:15:52] At how much I've started to like it
[00:15:55] As well as like other fans and stuff is wheels
[00:15:59] Wheels was one of those kind of b-roll tracks
[00:16:01] That barely made it but you know if you dive into it
[00:16:04] And you listen to it it grows on you a lot
[00:16:07] And I think a lot of the fans appreciate it
[00:16:09] That have been with us for a long time because they can hear
[00:16:11] What it's singing about and that's years and years of touring
[00:16:14] And so you know that one has been kind of a sleeper track that has creeped up a little bit
[00:16:19] So I agree with all the way being
[00:16:21] I mean that was my favorite by far by the gun to suck her for like a love song
[00:16:24] I feel like that's going to be a wedding song in years to come for sure
[00:16:27] So I'm excited to like watch that evolution of it
[00:16:30] I think we're going to transition into some rapid fire which should be a lot more fun
[00:16:34] Yeah
[00:16:35] First up who's winning your March Madness Bracket
[00:16:37] Who makes it all the way to the national championship
[00:16:39] Oh god dude I don't even know
[00:16:40] I would have had Kentucky but
[00:16:44] South yeah
[00:16:46] Here we are
[00:16:47] Do you not have time to even
[00:16:49] Dude I don't have time to have a bracket or anything
[00:16:53] I really don't and also like I just I was never a big like a college basketball
[00:16:58] Like you know there was definitely some sports
[00:17:02] That I would try to keep up with but I
[00:17:04] I definitely didn't have time for a lot of them and college basketball is one of them so
[00:17:09] And then we talked a little bit about like bucket list items
[00:17:11] Is there anything that you can besides like playing a venue
[00:17:14] Is there anything that's on your bucket list that really stands out that you haven't accomplished or done yet?
[00:17:18] Um uh in terms of
[00:17:22] Not even career
[00:17:23] Oh not even career
[00:17:25] Skydiving
[00:17:26] Man, dude I told you I'm bad at this
[00:17:29] I would say playing the gorge
[00:17:31] That that is a career one but um
[00:17:34] I think playing the gorge would be uh pretty incredible and
[00:17:37] I think at the end of the day the bucket list is just to have like a long career at this and
[00:17:42] Be able to sell out red rocks every year and be able to
[00:17:45] You know
[00:17:47] Continue to interact with the fans of the way that we're getting to right now
[00:17:51] So
[00:17:52] Favorite up-and-coming artist or group that you have
[00:17:55] Man Charles Wesley has been one for a long time for me and um
[00:18:00] We we got to have him on our red rock show last year
[00:18:04] Open it up and with molly tuttle and um, but I've been a huge fan of him for a long time. So
[00:18:11] Yeah, I mean I would say Charles, you know, he's not up and coming anymore, you know, right? Yeah
[00:18:16] But yeah, yeah, and he's just he's a wonderful guy, you know, he's a good friend. So are you a nascar fan?
[00:18:22] Uh, I mean not really I don't keep up with it, but I love
[00:18:26] I love what it's about and what it's you know, what it stands for and everything like
[00:18:31] That would be a bucket list item for me is to go like experience a full nascar like a full weekend at it
[00:18:37] You know, like you want to just the tailgate just
[00:18:41] Party at the tailgate whatever like in the experience. Yeah, whatever. Yeah, whatever. I do all of the things behind the wheel
[00:18:48] No
[00:18:51] No, yeah, I'll uh, I'll be on the side or something
[00:18:54] Well slowing things down fan of golf. Do you have a favorite golfer that you follow? Uh
[00:18:59] Man, I was a huge tiger woods fan. I still am
[00:19:03] Um, that's a great Jordan spieth
[00:19:06] Austin texas
[00:19:08] You know gotta
[00:19:09] Gotta support him rory. I'm a big fan of rory as well
[00:19:13] So there's a couple of them. What is your favorite 90s country song favorite 90s country? Um
[00:19:19] Queen in my double wide trailer
[00:19:22] Yeah, great answer. It's an error
[00:19:24] We have a 90s, uh
[00:19:26] March madness bracket. It's it's think it's doing well. It's doing well. Yeah
[00:19:30] Um favorite sad country song
[00:19:32] Uh, I honestly, I love, uh, caroline, uh, bicollter wall. I think that is just like such a beautiful
[00:19:40] timeless track. Um
[00:19:42] I you know, I could dive another one as, uh
[00:19:46] bartender blues, uh, george jones
[00:19:50] 100% bring bring me to tears. What are you doing when you're not playing music? Uh, typically fixed
[00:19:56] I'm watching something at my house, uh
[00:19:59] Or trying to get out to west texas with my wife and and buddies and uh get out in the desert and yeah
[00:20:05] I mean look for arrowhead points
[00:20:08] Just
[00:20:09] Stuff like that. You know, I love getting outside when I can't what's your go-to drink order if you had one
[00:20:14] Oh god, the guys are gonna love this that I get to say this in an interview
[00:20:18] So I have road margs is what I call them and it's, uh, I will
[00:20:24] and this is
[00:20:25] Filthy, but I'll take like lime soda water with ice
[00:20:31] tequila
[00:20:32] And lemon lime gatorade and that's just what's readily available all the time like no matter where you are
[00:20:39] So you're hydrating. I mean you're hydrating
[00:20:42] But we looked it up one night one late late night and apparently it's like the worst thing you could possibly do is have like a
[00:20:49] A hydrating sports drink with alcohol
[00:20:52] So I do not recommend that at home. Don't do that. How do you feel about Beyonce and country music?
[00:20:58] I think country music is cool now and a lot of people are gonna come around but
[00:21:04] I think she's a
[00:21:05] Incredibly talented woman and has every right to do whatever the hell she wants to do and I support it
[00:21:11] so
[00:21:12] And then a hangover cure. I mean you were talking about the road margs. That could be a two in one
[00:21:16] It is a two in one. I mean it really is
[00:21:18] Hangover cure also. I would say fried pickles at a restaurant with like a
[00:21:25] Spicy bloody maria
[00:21:27] with
[00:21:27] tequila instead of
[00:21:29] vodka
[00:21:30] Love it. Yeah, um, what's a guilty pleasure song that you have? Oh man
[00:21:35] um
[00:21:36] Probably like like a thousand emerald pools by what is it born? Is that the band name possibly
[00:21:43] Or it's like the synth edm like oh dude like synth pop is like
[00:21:47] Yeah
[00:21:48] 100% I'm with it. Your karaoke song go to karaoke song
[00:21:53] I
[00:21:56] Definitely not
[00:21:58] I don't know like maybe queen of my double wide trailer. I mean
[00:22:03] You know seminal wind, but we do that at the show. So I don't know that would be weird
[00:22:07] But well, thanks so much Shane for taking the time to talk with us. Yeah, I really appreciate it
[00:22:10] Yeah, congratulations on the grand alabra debut and the new album. Thank you very much. Appreciate it
