[00:00:14] [SPEAKER_01]: and Ashley McBride

[00:00:19] [SPEAKER_01]: On sale now at Ticketmaster.com

[00:00:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Celebrate college football's opening weekend in New Orleans

[00:00:24] [SPEAKER_01]: at Louisiana's Sugar Bowl Country Kickoff

[00:00:26] [SPEAKER_01]: presented by Louisiana Tourism and New Orleans & Company

[00:00:30] Music

[00:00:43] [SPEAKER_00]: This is Shelby and Quinn backstage at the Grand Laffrey with Kolby Cooper

[00:00:47] [SPEAKER_00]: You were one of the first people I ever got an interview

[00:00:49] [SPEAKER_00]: and I always say that you are probably the nicest artist

[00:00:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, nice, I love that, I think she's really happy to hear

[00:00:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and since then you released quite a bit of singles over the last year

[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_00]: so we're really excited to hear about what the next project is

[00:01:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, absolutely

[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, we're just kind of

[00:01:06] [SPEAKER_03]: we're a few, like probably three or four songs away from being fully concrete

[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, we have like 40 songs to pick from

[00:01:12] [SPEAKER_03]: but just to be, I guess, really picky

[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_03]: and all the songs that have been released in the past year

[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I think are playing on and putting on it

[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_03]: We're still kind of choosing album names and stuff

[00:01:21] [SPEAKER_03]: so it's, I don't know, you know, it's all up in the air

[00:01:23] [SPEAKER_03]: but we're definitely on the road to the next project

[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm so excited about it, you know

[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, every time I'm excited

[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_04]: And we get to, this is the first time that we've interviewed somebody

[00:01:31] [SPEAKER_04]: after they've already played

[00:01:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, nice

[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_04]: So, how was it out there? Like just ask that question

[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_03]: It was great, it was, it's always nerve-wracking

[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_03]: It was my third time so it was less nerve-wracking

[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_03]: but it was my first time with Taylor

[00:01:44] [SPEAKER_03]: who plays drums for us and Paul who plays lead guitar

[00:01:47] [SPEAKER_03]: so I was a little nervous for that

[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_03]: But it was great, I mean, it's always like

[00:01:50] [SPEAKER_03]: it's so cool to step in the circle

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_03]: and, you know, there's so much history in it

[00:01:54] [SPEAKER_03]: so being able to be any part of that is always pretty good, you know

[00:01:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Being just 25, you've been at this for four or five years now

[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Are there any moments besides when you play the opera

[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_00]: that you look around and you're like, wow, this is one of my dreams

[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely, that's when we play Billy Bob's once a year normally

[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'm from East Texas, born and raised in Palestine, Texas

[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_03]: and I still live in Tyler

[00:02:16] [SPEAKER_03]: So we live for East Texas people, you know

[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_03]: 9-3, got on my hand

[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_03]: and growing up there, Billy Bob's was like, I don't know

[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like the... as a kid, we grew up listening to Texas and Red Dirt Music

[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_03]: and Billy Bob's was this place that we always like saw these artists

[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_03]: that I've looked up to playing

[00:02:32] [SPEAKER_03]: and there's a lot of Billy Bob's records

[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_03]: and I had probably 20 or 30 of them at the house

[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_03]: just like all my favorite artists

[00:02:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I had one, I would get one

[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_03]: so to be able to go and play that show every time they're playing

[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_03]: and just see the crowded people, it's like, fuck dude

[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_03]: This is literally just a full circle moment

[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I can literally picture myself in my parents' living room when no one's home

[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_03]: I brought a stool in the middle of the living room and a guitar

[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_03]: and I sat there and I played along to Wade Bun's Live at Billy Bob's

[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_03]: and just pretended I was doing it

[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_03]: and I would just talk between songs

[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_03]: and then play the songs when he played them

[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_03]: and it was just like, it was cool

[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_03]: and now they get to be there playing my songs

[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_03]: It's holy shit, so cool

[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_03]: But there's a lot of those venues, you know, but that's like the one

[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_04]: I just get hung up on the fact that you're only 25

[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_04]: and you know, you're already so deep four or five years into it

[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_04]: like do you remember back whenever you first got started?

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Does that seem like a long time ago or is it like yesterday?

[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_03]: So long ago

[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, so July 20th, well Mark, six years since we officially started touring

[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_03]: like, fuck dude, time goes by so fast

[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I got out of high school in 2017 and put our first single out in 2017

[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I think at the end of the year like November or something

[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_03]: So I mean, how many I don't fucking to quit math?

[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_03]: It sounds stupid but you know, six, seven years

[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_03]: it happens fast. I'm 25

[00:03:52] [SPEAKER_03]: so to even say I've been doing something for six, seven years

[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_03]: it's crazy. I'm gonna have a six year old almost

[00:03:56] [SPEAKER_03]: and been married to my wife for six years

[00:03:58] [SPEAKER_03]: so it's a lot of good shit happened six years ago

[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's what I mean, our next question was about your kids

[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_00]: you know having a wife and three kids at home

[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_00]: while being on the road

[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_00]: I know you just put out that song about being on there

[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_00]: which is definitely fitting

[00:04:11] [SPEAKER_00]: but how do you do it all?

[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like a balancing act really just like anything in life

[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_03]: like fucking bad food or drugs

[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_03]: you can't have too much of it

[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_03]: you gotta have the balance, right?

[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_03]: So I mean really though, but you know what I mean

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_03]: fuck my bad, what was I saying?

[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_00]: How do you do it all?

[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah, so like with that

[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_03]: playing shows and being home

[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_03]: it's the same thing, it's just like a balanced thing

[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I really think everything in life is balanced

[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'm not good at all

[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_03]: but I try and this year we've been playing less shows

[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_03]: we've been doing like we'll do like a super heavy month

[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_03]: where we play every three or four days a week

[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_03]: not every but we'll play three or four days every week

[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_03]: and then we'll do a month where it's like

[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_03]: four or five shows this month so I'm home for you know

[00:04:55] [SPEAKER_03]: 70% of the month which in the past six years

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_03]: has been unheard of

[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_03]: like I've been especially the past three years

[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_03]: have been I mean they've flown by because it's been

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_03]: like two or three month trips where I'm gone the entire time

[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_03]: maybe home for one day

[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_03]: and that shit was really hard, it really was

[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_03]: which is you know

[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_03]: what we're kind of doing like this

[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_03]: and luckily we've worked to the point where we can do it like this

[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_03]: and make everything make sense still with

[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_03]: you know the guys and being on the road

[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_03]: now I get to be home when I want to be home

[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_03]: and by the time then like oh shit

[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_03]: man I've been home for a while

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm looking at calendars

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_03]: time to you know get on the road for months

[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_03]: so it's good, it's really good

[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_04]: and on Instagram we saw you noodling with Co

[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_04]: and Dylan Wheeler is that a normal hobby of yours

[00:05:36] [SPEAKER_04]: or is that you know just something that you do when you're hanging out

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_03]: it's for coming one

[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean I did it for the first time

[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_03]: probably at the end of May

[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_03]: around my birthday me and Dylan went

[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_03]: and we stayed at Co's lake house

[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_03]: and he's like Dylan is so last minute man

[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_03]: he'll hit me up like

[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_03]: we got home on Sunday from the road

[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_03]: both of us, we live two streets over in Tyler

[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_03]: so like we're together all the time

[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_03]: and he'll always hit me up on Sunday

[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_03]: like he hits me up on Sunday

[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_03]: we get back from the road

[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_03]: it's like 10 in the morning

[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm just like dead barely there

[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_03]: and he like hey let's go to Co's house right now

[00:06:09] [SPEAKER_03]: and fucking noodle for the next two days

[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_03]: and we went out there and did it man

[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_03]: it's a blast, it's one of the most fun things I've done for sure

[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_04]: and without giving too much away Co's lake house

[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_04]: pretty sick

[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_04]: oh yeah absolutely, you can hear everything Co has a stick

[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_00]: you also have a very honest approach

[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_00]: and raw approach on social media

[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_00]: where you're posting

[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_00]: right when you wake up

[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_00]: you getting an allergy test

[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_00]: you pretty much doing everything

[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I tried to, I mean I don't know

[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like it's so hard to get to know people

[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_03]: obviously through social media

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_03]: and I mean I could do a better job for sure

[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_03]: but it's just, you know

[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_03]: I just have fun

[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_03]: if I think about it, I'm like oh shit

[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm doing something that's kind of interesting

[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_03]: whatever I'll post it and then it goes

[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't really think about it too much

[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_00]: I feel like the fans probably appreciate that a lot

[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_03]: it makes me feel better hopefully

[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_03]: if they don't, sorry

[00:06:59] [SPEAKER_04]: well we'll kind of switch into music

[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_04]: I feel like we haven't talked a lot about music yet

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_04]: but I do want to ask who would you say

[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_04]: are some of your musical inspirations

[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_04]: if you have any

[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean I'm such a music connoisseur

[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_03]: like I really love every genre

[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_03]: every, I feel like you can show me a song

[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_03]: even if it's a fucking terrible song

[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_03]: I can find something I like about it

[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_03]: like I just

[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm a music lover, I enjoy music

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_03]: so starting off

[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_03]: with Wayland Jennings was the first one

[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I remember listening to in the cow truck

[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_03]: with my dad and then Chris LeDue too

[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_03]: and I was a kid and my dad worked on Ranchus

[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_03]: so those are like two of the country ones

[00:07:34] [SPEAKER_03]: and also all the Texas and Red Dead artists

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_03]: like Randy Rogers, Wade Bowen, Cross-Candy Ragh,

[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_03]: we, Reckless Kelly, Charlie Robinson

[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_03]: and then

[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Rap, Rock, shit

[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_03]: sorry, Rap, I mean I don't know

[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_03]: I like all of it, like I was saying

[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Nirvana and Rock, Link to Naked 2, Foo Fighters

[00:07:51] [SPEAKER_03]: like I said, show it to me

[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll probably like it, oh Guns N' Noses, yeah

[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Ozzy Osbourne, Ozzy Osbourne

[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_03]: was one of my first loves when I was a kid too

[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_03]: like the first Rock

[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess Rockstar I got into

[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_03]: was Ozzy and my dad bought me the No More Tears record

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_03]: and we had a bounce house business

[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_03]: when I was a kid and I remember

[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_03]: it was my birthday, I got it for my birthday

[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_03]: and the next day I had to go pick one of the big guys bounce houses up

[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_03]: and listen to the entire record like three times

[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_03]: on the way there in back, it's ingrained in my head still

[00:08:15] [SPEAKER_03]: it's good

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Out of the songs that you've written

[00:08:18] [SPEAKER_00]: you played two to nine through one of them

[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_00]: you talked about how important it is to you

[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_00]: is that the song that you're most proud of

[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_00]: or is there one song that sticks out that you're most proud of

[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_03]: um

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_03]: there's a few

[00:08:29] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean typically the ones I'm most proud of

[00:08:33] [SPEAKER_03]: are like the ones that are

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_03]: sad or something to mean something to mean some way

[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_03]: like Stars Fall Down, it's one about my kids

[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_03]: or a Josie song

[00:08:40] [SPEAKER_03]: it's like a song I wrote before Josie was born

[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_03]: we were mourning parents yet

[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_03]: and I remember I just sat down in my room and wrote it

[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_03]: and I was like this is cool, this is badass

[00:08:48] [SPEAKER_03]: and it means a lot to me also Curious October

[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_03]: it's a song about my dad dying so

[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_03]: that one definitely has a little something to it

[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_03]: um, but then there's like just out of like

[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_03]: like just songs of not being like

[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_03]: sentimental and emotional and shit

[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_03]: uh probably like mama is really one of my favorites

[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_03]: uh Running Away is maybe

[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_03]: my favorite though it's like musically

[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_03]: and um

[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_03]: melodies and all that stuff it's like it came together so well

[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_03]: and really like personally

[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_03]: my favorite one to sing live and play and

[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_03]: favorite one we've put out so far

[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah I can't imagine like how cool it is

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_00]: for your kids when they get older like this is the music

[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_00]: my dad is putting out my first

[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_00]: X amount of years in my life

[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I think about that shit all the time

[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean when Josie already been 6

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_03]: I've been a musician ever since she's been born

[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_03]: uh so it's just

[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_03]: you know it's so funny just talking to my kids

[00:09:35] [SPEAKER_03]: like um, I don't know

[00:09:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean like their mom's a stay at home mom

[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_03]: so like they just have such a

[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_03]: crazy childhood like compared to

[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_03]: compared to mine both my parents worked

[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_03]: like three jobs a piece and stuff so

[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_03]: this is some of the stuff that comes out of their mouth

[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_03]: is funny as hell yeah

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_03]: do you play your music already

[00:09:52] [SPEAKER_03]: for them? Oh yeah absolutely man

[00:09:54] [SPEAKER_03]: and their fans yeah they love

[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_03]: they haven't told me

[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_03]: if they aren't they've only said they love it so

[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_03]: that would probably that would be devastating

[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_03]: um they just say this sucks ass

[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_03]: dad I don't know what's wrong with it

[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_03]: um yeah no they love it we they

[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_03]: they've heard more koi kuper music than

[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_03]: anyone will ever hear in their life

[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_03]: probably especially like all the like there's

[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_03]: so many under these songs that they've heard

[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_03]: like if I get back from a from like a

[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_03]: ride and trip um I have like three or four

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_03]: new songs and like y'all listen to them we'll

[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_03]: sit there and listen to them in the car or something

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah and if they're good they'll normally ask for them again

[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_03]: like a couple hours later they're like

[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_03]: can you hear that again? That's how you know it's good

[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_03]: kids are usually brutal like that

[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_03]: so you can trust them I think absolutely

[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_04]: that's a good system that you got going right there

[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_04]: absolutely I hope so and let's

[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_00]: dive into some rapid fire let's go

[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_00]: fill in the blank sad country

[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_03]: picas and uh dylan wheeler

[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_03]: played this acoustic private show

[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_03]: it was on 4th of July last year and we were all

[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_03]: in these just shitty cut off American flag

[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_03]: t-shirts like uh at the end of the

[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_03]: show we were extremely drunk

[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_03]: and uh it was like it was a private

[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_03]: thing so it's almost it was just like a vibe

[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_03]: you know they were up there and we're like oh

[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_03]: we practiced this one backstage twice

[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_03]: and then picas just started

[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_03]: American girl

[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_03]: it was great I wish we had our own video but no one has

[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_03]: our own video so that's sad

[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_03]: we gotta do it again let me know if you find that

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_03]: I will I'll send it to you

[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_00]: do you do any covers during your set list

[00:13:19] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah we um we do this like mashup

[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_03]: where we did like three different covers

[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_03]: um in one

[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_03]: uh we've just we've done it since we started

[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_03]: it was just kind of one of those things like when you first

[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_03]: start and you're playing 60s or

[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_03]: 90s like you know it's kind

[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_03]: of hard to play it with a five song

[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_03]: EP so you gotta do anything you can

[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_03]: and we just kind of kept doing it since

[00:13:39] [SPEAKER_03]: and it's good it's fun like it's always fun to

[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_03]: it's fun for us to just give our take on

[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_03]: a song that's not ours and it's just fun

[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_03]: to play something that's not ours on the stage in general

[00:13:47] [SPEAKER_03]: especially when everybody it's like we play like Taylor Swift

[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Kelly Clarkson and uh Paramore

[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_03]: in our current mashup it's like

[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_03]: it's it's the shit everybody knows it all

[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_03]: um and we also do my love it's just a little Texas

[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_03]: song that we covered um so yeah we do

[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_03]: we play that one every night too because the fans like

[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_03]: stream the shit out of it and uh love it so it's

[00:14:03] [SPEAKER_03]: it's crazy you were saying a nickel back song

[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah covered yeah we have in the mashup
