Week 3: South Bound and Down

[00:00:23] Welcome in. Week II. It was a week of upsets for all the teams except the team.

[00:00:30] We wanted it to be an upset for. I tell you, these broncos even when all the other

[00:00:35] crappy teams are stepping up in week two showing some signs of life. Not our boys, Ryan.

[00:00:41] Ryan has your week been how you do and buddy on this wonderful Friday here in Colorado.

[00:00:51] As people know, who are in Boyle listeners to the podcast, our mood doesn't rise and fall with the broncos.

[00:01:02] So I really had a wonderful week. Yeah, Penn and California tomorrow.

[00:01:10] Can you watch a lot of football on Sunday? Unfortunately in the state where gambling is not legal.

[00:01:17] So that was legal in California now.

[00:01:21] Is it? I'm pretty sure it is. Pretty sure it's been passed. Oh, well, that really, I mean, not change of things.

[00:01:29] I might be one of those things where it doesn't go into a fact until like January or something.

[00:01:35] Anyway, yeah, it's I'm looking forward to the weekend and it's going to be unfortunately another rough week for the broncos, I think.

[00:01:44] But that's okay. That's what works.

[00:01:47] God, it is this is the first one that we both had them losing week one. We both had them winning. We do now.

[00:01:54] We did think they were going to have the Russell Wilson handicap still going strong for him when we handicapped this before the season.

[00:02:02] You had them losing that game. I had them winning this week still and it kind of played out exactly how we thought.

[00:02:13] In terms of these offenses were incredibly inept. The Steelers, especially in the second half, they were good Lord were they bad in the second half.

[00:02:25] But I guess the first place I want to talk about this game is it feels like if you're paying Sean Peyton all this money.

[00:02:37] We shouldn't say we lost this game because we got out coached.

[00:02:43] And I think that's true. I understand that what I understand that, you know, they have some players over there.

[00:02:50] Well, you know what Zach Allen was in the backfield the whole time too.

[00:02:54] Like this was not, this the Steelers are a bad team. They have a really good defense in their bad team.

[00:03:01] And I thought that Peyton and Vans Joseph rearing their ugly heads again.

[00:03:08] In the first half, I thought Vans Joseph it was like he'd never watched Justin Fields play.

[00:03:15] Like our cornerbacks were sitting 15 yards off.

[00:03:19] On like third night we were like, hey, we know you struggle with the decision making. We want to make it as easy as possible.

[00:03:24] This is a welcoming environment. We want you to feel comfortable out there.

[00:03:30] And we didn't put any pressure on him. We didn't put, we didn't have certain following pickins all over the place.

[00:03:38] Something you saw even in this Thursday night game where they didn't go well for the Patriots, but

[00:03:44] Christian is all this who is not as good, but is a very good corner for the pitch. He followed, freeying gear Wilson all over the place.

[00:03:53] Like they, they were just like, hey, we're going to let you do this and same it should have been the same thing for certain who is going to cause big plays pickins.

[00:04:03] Why is our only a lead player not following their only a lead player?

[00:04:09] It makes no sense. It was so dumb. So I thought if like it started with the defense and then it just was a whole steady stream of three out of three.

[00:04:22] And I think we're going to have a lot of the power of cowardice from the coaching staff. And I guess that was my biggest takeaway was like, hey, if you come out and you attack him and you know what certain gets beat or somebody doesn't get there.

[00:04:38] Or you know, you get strips actor, bonics makes him some mistakes whatever did that's fine. That's part of the talent that's just what happened sometimes.

[00:04:49] But it's I think we talked about it a little bit last week, but right, it's like champagne doesn't know that he's not coaching players that are better than the other teams.

[00:04:59] Like you're going to have to scheme things in a way that's smart. You can't just roll out there and be like, Drew breeze figure it out.

[00:05:07] It's it's hard not for for me not to look at the broader picture here because I just looked up he's the second highest paid coach in all of American professional sports. He's making $18 million a year and it's

[00:05:27] I mean, this is his hands selected quarterback and he's got everything he wanted. It's a lot like Dion like you get everything you want and then your team still sucks like at some point it's your fault.

[00:05:42] And so and there's not a lot of ownership actually going on on either front there like there's a lot of blame going on and not a lot of like I'm you know going to try to get better like I don't I don't hear a lot of that from either of them.

[00:05:58] So it's incredibly frustrating to root for and you know, I don't think he's going to lose his job this year, but

[00:06:09] If this looks bad next year and next looks like price young looked like I don't I don't think that the wallings are going to be shy about firing and they don't care about the money.

[00:06:25] That for a lot of people that would be a big reason to keep them around, but these guys have more money than God they don't care so it's.

[00:06:36] It's a shame that it. You know looks the way that it looks but I think Russ ate a lot of the blame and he deserved a lot of the blame last year, but I wasn't we were saying on the podcast that he wasn't creating a culture or creating or putting Russ into positions to succeed it was almost like he was sabotaging him actively so I but it looks like he's having a touching nicks.

[00:07:01] So I don't know it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

[00:07:08] I do think I like that talk about culture and I didn't want to get into that because.

[00:07:15] On the one hand, I totally get it it's rookie.

[00:07:18] I'm glad that he's using the kid gloves but I do think it's it's got to be talked about in the locker room a little bit of like oh there's shons guys and there's not shons guys right because last year.

[00:07:31] For a like they had to burn a time out in the red zone.

[00:07:38] And you would have thought Russ will soon had ran over five dogs and three babies on the way to the stadium like Sean was publicly embarrassing this man right?

[00:07:52] And it wasn't in coincidence that Justin field said that Russ got a petty game ball and that he said I think everyone knew he got did dirty there.

[00:08:01] Like players are watching this and saying okay hold on you were losing your mind and saying we can't have this and then we just have bone eggs throw two red zone interceptions.

[00:08:11] And you're not over there upset like I get development but also we're trying to win games here where we get paid to win football games and it doesn't feel like any coach who has been successful in any sport.

[00:08:29] Has had these like favorites that are untouchable.

[00:08:36] You hear with bellachick you hear with all these guys these guys who came in late rounds whatever and he's just like you're better than this guy right now looks like we're going to play you.

[00:08:47] And right now it doesn't feel like the Broncos are a hierarchy and it doesn't feel like there's any self evaluation despite the hollow kind of talk this week from Sean Peyton of like we need to simplify things we need to because he throws in the little things.

[00:09:04] We need to simplify things.

[00:09:05] We need to make it simpler.

[00:09:08] What are we doing that's complicated what are we doing that's difficult like if we need to simplify things that makes me worried.

[00:09:16] I assume he just means the length of the play calls as I mean those are there was that video from the more I came out a few weeks ago that's awful.

[00:09:26] This is not it we don't need Trump into necessarily like go over and chew out bone eggs like that I don't think is what we want or what we need but you do want him to provide some coaching you want to feel like there's some sort of learning happening after those moments where it's like.

[00:09:44] Okay, like this is what you've clearly did wrong and sure that's probably happening in a quarterbacks coach room at some point or whatever but like when you're making eighteen million dollars a year better be fucking coming from you like say something do something there's no like.

[00:10:01] And you had no problem last year using the media to go after players.

[00:10:05] No problem and former coaches yeah like you want to talk about petty like honestly the guys almost impossible to move forward like I hated nothing.

[00:10:15] I think I'm not sure if you're going to talk about what happened as our coach but what Peyton did was just like.

[00:10:20] What are you doing it was stupid and unnecessary and we're going to get it or ask his kicked by the jets in a couple weeks again because you said some stupid shit to the USA today of all places like you couldn't even get that shit in a real newspaper they give that stuff away and hotels like what are we talking about.

[00:10:41] It was I don't know he runs me the wrong way in so many different types of ways that it's hard to even look at him objectively for me on a slide yeah well I guess we've we've talked about defense I would have given the defense I think people are being too kind to the defense because of the second half.

[00:11:04] And I'm not saying Mike Tomlin basically did my strategy of where ahead we're going to take a knee and punt it four times but he came pretty damn close.

[00:11:14] I think he told Justin Fields listen don't you will love us this up alright and you can start week three because they were under no threat from us.

[00:11:27] And so I would actually give the defense I was frustrated by them.

[00:11:31] I thought we played like a modern defense like too high look for not a modern offense.

[00:11:38] Yeah, you have to adjust to who's in front of you like I understand why the two highs most effective for football in general and I want to get into that on the offensive side of the ball for us but like.

[00:11:49] You're not playing a modern offense Justin Fields has shown over the course of his career he cannot put together sustained drives and makes sustained good decisions.

[00:11:59] So let's not let them run and get him an easy spots let's contain him in the pocket and let's put pressure on him.

[00:12:06] Easy peasy like let's do this and yeah sounds easy but when you don't have enough out players on the field.

[00:12:13] Well, but I'm not even talking about NFL players. I'm saying why are your corners 15 yards off the line of scrimmage when it's at third and seven.

[00:12:24] Like he doesn't even have to think he's just like oh that guy's running a crawl in that he's going to get to that spot before that guy can close.

[00:12:32] Like I don't think like pressure on him like I was watching a clip of Bill Bell check talking about golf and how to stop the lines and he was like if you put pressure at his face what's he going to do Ryan Clark and Ryan Clark was like throw you the ball.

[00:12:46] And that's the exact thing that we need to be doing like we need an aggressive defense.

[00:12:51] It doesn't matter if we like keep losing this field position battle and are just like oh we didn't give up 30 we need turnovers.

[00:13:02] We need to put our team in a good spot we're not like to your point or we're not super talented if we're out there for too long.

[00:13:08] We're going to we're going to get guys hurt our depth is going to get exposed and we're it's going to come to light that we aren't that good.

[00:13:16] Like so get off the field get turnovers you got to play that risky game and it feels like these people are just coaching for their reputations rather than to like actually try to win football games for the number Broncos.

[00:13:31] So I would give the defense I would give them like a C minus honestly and I know that sounds harsh in a 13 to 6 game but I think the stealers often sucks.

[00:13:40] I think it is bad.

[00:13:43] I mean I think that this with this loss is going to look worse in six weeks because the stealers are going to play more and I found teams and that's it's going to be very challenging for them to win.

[00:14:00] And you know you sort of hinted at our schedules like I'm struggling to see how this team is going to win.

[00:14:12] It just doesn't it's hard to see how you know a team that at this point has basically nothing going on.

[00:14:23] There's not a positive happening.

[00:14:25] There's no like to your point.

[00:14:28] There's no defensive thing that you're like oh at least your team locked down what's his nuts and at least you're smart enough to put them over there.

[00:14:39] Yeah we're not smart enough for like hey I don't know the second water see whose name but can you guard him.

[00:14:46] Coach I don't think they're going to go to him.

[00:14:48] Yeah I know but that's why we have you in this play that I drew with crayons on my fridge and my parents hung it up.

[00:14:57] Okay Vance I'll get out there like what are we doing and then offensively.

[00:15:04] You alluded to it but the lack of creativity.

[00:15:09] It it made me so mad that the one time we ran a halfway decent trick play which by the way lining up in wildcat and then getting it to your quarterback on a flee flicker is not exactly the most creative flee flicker in the world.

[00:15:26] And we were still behind the stealer secondary by five yards because they were like well easy it's probably just arguing or run up the middle that's what they've been doing all game.

[00:15:36] I went in that play with under eight year old team and I nine sports they were truly terrible I mean we were trying to get volunteer parent coaches and to give you some idea of how fun these kids vertical.

[00:15:52] And I think that's a lot of the people who are not in the middle of the coach none of the parents volunteers know like no thank you I'm not a coach in the little giants out there.

[00:15:59] So we under sports moving by the way we had an unbelievable lack of talent but all I did and they didn't want to practice they were not interested in football like their parents were making them do it you know.

[00:16:12] It was an exercise and a place where adults supervision to break up.

[00:16:17] And like go run around and make some new friends you know and so we had a lot of fun but we basically only ran trick plays and the quarters we ever came to scoring a touchdown was an unbelievable flee flicker that this kid just miraculously caught.

[00:16:35] And he was so slow he got caught from behind.

[00:16:40] And I literally hit my knees in the middle of the field like no that was our only chance we're never going to give the club that close to touchdown the rest of the year and I don't think we ever did.

[00:16:52] Yeah, well we did almost shut out the best team in the league it was zero zero with minutes to go because we implemented a very strict zone defense.

[00:17:04] That worked extremely well.

[00:17:08] And yeah, but anyways it's so bad the Broncos season is we're getting Ryan comparing our team to an eight year old.

[00:17:17] We were we were a team.

[00:17:19] We were more I use a lot of motion we would send people in motion all the time just did a movement okay still the no motion.

[00:17:29] And the team Patrick cutting to go back to I think Bellich has been really good on this inside the NFL when he's with Chris long and like guys he likes he liked Chad Johnson.

[00:17:41] But he was talking about it and he was like they were talking about Bryce young and he was like you can't miss on guys in your building.

[00:17:48] Like he's like you're good everyone's going to miss in the draft everyone's going to miss on guys that come from other teams like just not a good fit or not a good whatever he's like.

[00:17:59] But you get to see him practice every day he's like you have them in your building you can't miss on guys in your building in talent evaluation and it feels like.

[00:18:10] The Broncos don't have an understanding of good talent evaluation like Justin Simmons sure shit looks pretty fine and with Falcons.

[00:18:23] Like it's a little bit of impact or is going to be on an active roster.

[00:18:27] Like there is it's wild to me right that we are like we you and I are on this podcast and we're like hey we don't have tons of talent.

[00:18:36] And the Broncos are like anyone who's proved themselves in the NFL get the fuck out of our building we have no space for you here we have we have such an abundance of talent.

[00:18:46] Do you remember the local media here that was talking about we had so much depth at wide receiver that we cut to him Patrick.

[00:18:54] Let's now we're like hey we need to have tryouts again because all these guys suck like yeah no shit like no shit dude.

[00:19:05] Can we get Travis Hunter to withdraw from see you and just come play for the Broncos seriously this is unbelievable.

[00:19:16] But like it feels like we don't have a sense like Sean Patons offense in theory.

[00:19:26] Should be pretty effective against what is the most called defense it's been a big topic.

[00:19:33] And all the national talk shows the two high and it's so effective and teams are are it's so hard to go against mele one of the ESPN NFL guys called for them to make a rule.

[00:19:48] To where you had to bring a safety down to the box to get numbers up like and I'm like hey how about these guys just don't suck like how about that like.

[00:19:59] How much you touch a nine yard slam.

[00:20:02] Every time like these like running has never been easier and these short dump offs are absolutely there dude they're absolutely there and all you have to do is be a timing team and that's what Sean Paton said.

[00:20:19] That bone mix was a fucking goodwill hunting at like I agree he's a rookie and we should great amount of scale but then don't leak all these stories that he's the second coming of Jesus Christ at quarterback.

[00:20:32] Like then guess what we're allowed to be critical and say hey all the things that you said this guy was the greatest on film that you'd ever seen.

[00:20:44] It seems like they'd be good in today's NFL where the safety's are there and it's all timing and all of that and it doesn't feel like we're very good at it like.

[00:20:55] It is unbelievably bad and then the fact that the play calling to your point was so vanilla it's like you can't just say hey go out talent them out there we don't have that we have to run.

[00:21:13] It's it's like watching a different sport when you watch some of these other teams where they they're clink who be extra.

[00:21:23] Like we must be the only franchise in the NFL where if we just would have allowed some fucking nepotism we'd be so much better off like.

[00:22:27] No like no I do think that there's a possibility that he can turn this around I guess no no I think there's no possibility he turns this around I think he is.

[00:22:37] So it's fucking his ways it's going to be two more years we're stuck with this from this year and probably next year.

[00:22:48] Truly embarrassing and it's unfortunate that.

[00:23:01] I just think of what McDonald said when he became the coach of the dolphins and he said it's my job for players to be able to look at me and say he is going he's trying to make me.

[00:23:14] Look as good as I can look because I have a finite time to make money for my family to provide you know a great lifestyle.

[00:23:23] And so it's my job and I take that very seriously to try to put guys in positions where they can be successful.

[00:23:28] And I don't feel like on either side of the ball.

[00:23:33] We're scheming up in a way that makes any sense.

[00:23:37] To to make people look good some guys you know Zach Allen has been a beast and I feel like that's just event in spite of the scheme like he's just been pissed and been like I'm coming through the middle every time.

[00:23:49] And he's been blown up run place he's been getting into your pressure he's been awesome.

[00:23:53] Everything we wanted last year the first eight weeks of the season he's been now for you know what's that nine weeks.

[00:24:01] He's been a beast and he's been awesome.

[00:24:04] But now I mean bear and brownings hurt and I think we can probably start transitioning to this box game but.

[00:24:11] I mean, I just said to blind in our offensive line or taking hits now with my glint she and browning and not a lot of talent back there besides chrome alright.

[00:24:21] But he's not even getting the right to bring it back to our sort of broader conversation.

[00:24:28] I just looked it up because I was interested but this is going to be our eighth consecutive losing season.

[00:24:36] And if we're right and Sean Biden has allowed to coach this year and next year that's nine and then we're talking about potentially having a decade of losing football in Denver, which.

[00:24:49] I mean, if you would have told us as kids that we were going to lose 10 years in a row have losing record like there's no shot I would have believed you honestly.

[00:24:58] I think if you would have told a lot of the national media that we would have 10 years of losing records.

[00:25:03] I don't think they would have believed you and the broncos as a franchise have bungled this since we hired McDaniel.

[00:25:12] It takes sustain we were competent to do this.

[00:25:17] We were clamoring back there back then that they should have interviewed chain and so it's I mean, they should just I guess the moral of the story is they should hire us to run the team good Lord we couldn't do worse right.

[00:25:31] I mean, it honestly is it's a sad state as a broncos fan because the NFL is geared towards keeping teams as close to mediocre as possible.

[00:25:45] Like it's geared towards being like you can come up who here you go well, you know we're trying to make it just by the size of teams the way that they have structured the salary cap.

[00:25:56] The NBA is trying to do a similar thing right now where they're not letting they don't want a you know heodles or the garden deraind on the warriors they don't want that so they're trying to keep it out.

[00:26:13] Well, it means that you have to be aggressively stupid to be this bad for this long and if the shoe fits right I think we can wear it because it's a good thing.

[00:26:25] I mean, Sean okay who's hiring these other coaches. Oh, that was me. Oh, okay. Well, we don't have a lot of holdovers from who brought all these guys in.

[00:26:39] Who drafted our quarterback? Ah, that was me. Who's who's designing the offense here you know it's an offense driven league it's got to be all that's me.

[00:26:48] Okay, do you think you could have some self reflection and maybe change some things up? No. No, it's not me like just the ego is wild and I think that you know horseshoe up the a stretch that we had last season.

[00:27:04] I think has probably set back the evaluation of the Broncos more than.

[00:27:13] More people more than Broncos fans and would like to admit because I mean that was a four-minute team last year who happened to go on and saying run in the dog days of the season.

[00:27:27] And and really get some bounces and some things where like that money night game Josh Allen through like 12 pcs. Like he looked like he's actively trying to lose.

[00:27:40] Yeah, I think that you kind of see yourself as a oh this is an eight wind team last year surely we're going to go up now that we he's got his guys in there no no that was a four-minute team last year.

[00:27:54] And here's where we are. Yeah, no it's I mean expectations got way out of whack and it's it's Broncos.

[00:28:06] I mean it's been like this for the last 10 years.

[00:28:09] Yeah, Broncos has a three-legged pride. Yeah, there hasn't been there hasn't been a year that they have that the media or die hard Broncos fans had a thought that this team had a chance to win a wild card game and I mean last year was the most wins they've had and you just said they were a four-minute team so.

[00:28:34] It's been rough. Yeah, it's not good. All right, but a chance hope springs eternal right as we are visiting the I mean I wouldn't I would say probably not a surprising is the Saints.

[00:28:51] But kind of the other team that has been kind of a wild team here. We got the bucks their two-and-o they are at home they are favored by seven and a half points, which is kind of wild because if you were told me at the beginning of this season that we could get the Broncos plus seven and a half first Baker may feel.

[00:29:15] I had told you to put your mortgage on that and I am not telling you that right now I'll tell you.

[00:29:23] Some bad injuries for both teams. Browning was ruled out today for the Broncos obviously McGlinci the tackle went on short term I are earlier, but no Antoine Winfield one of the best safety's in the game for the bucks and then Vita Veda doubtful.

[00:29:42] It doesn't look like he'll be able to play there so that certainly helps potentially be able to get some sort of a running game going potentially because Vita Veda is one of the best run staffers in the league and we would be asked if we ran this stupid.

[00:30:06] The other thing is Franklin Myers is all good from the concussion. Well, it's the NFL maybe not but he was clear to play and obviously that's a lot of talent for our D-line especially with Browning on if we had no Myers and no Browning.

[00:30:28] Baker may feel like he was at Oklahoma again he would have so much time to say they might triple teams act out like you and why I don't think we should block the other guys they'll just run to the sideline.

[00:30:45] So what's kind of you break down on this it feels like the bucks are maybe a little bit overrated in this I mean they gave up six trips to the red zone.

[00:30:55] The lines like one touchdown which on the one hand you can be like hey that's good you know Ben but don't break but like they got dominated by the lines but ended up winning that game.

[00:31:05] And then they got to play the Panthers which appears to be a positive thing to get to do so there you know probably a little overrated here but.

[00:31:17] It is so hard like you said to find positives for this Broncos team right now that I don't know man I don't know like normally I'd be like okay this is we're gonna throw the kitchen sink at him.

[00:31:34] But I feel like the kitchen sink for Sean Peyton right now is he's gonna be like hey guys you know how we normally run that pitch played to the left.

[00:31:43] This week we're running into the right I know I'm a crazy man alright I'm crazy out here I've lost my mind guys like that's the kind of delicate we be emotion or could pass or take guard the best wider receiver none and now we're gonna put him on the slot.

[00:31:57] Alright rookie you got Evans and guy who haven't learned your name yet you're on godwin let's break like.

[00:32:06] Make sure to play at least 20 yards deep what like it is hard to find positives here I don't want to take the box and I wouldn't be gambling wise but like I don't want to take the Broncos either.

[00:32:20] And I'm someone who's gonna plus two and a half last week yeah this is a stay away I mean the I think that the box are they're not good but they're okay and I'm looking at a line that's actually six right now Jesus.

[00:32:42] Well the books are gonna be in almost a lot of America six point teasers those same and two teasers that the Ravens killed last week by the way.

[00:32:50] And that's the reason I think you could get the Broncos might be live here like this could be the game where it gives Broncos country that little bit of false hope you know they.

[00:33:02] They beat what will probably end up being an overrated box team in a bad division that might still win the division but that division is just so bad that it doesn't matter.

[00:33:16] Yeah, I mean what's here opinion it's a slight diversion but I do want to ask you what's you know in the Saints like you put up just a crap ton of points like they beat the hell out of the cowboys.

[00:33:30] I don't know they could be live but yeah I don't know it's still a bad division I don't think either of those teams are very good I'd actually kind of they're they seem very similar to me.

[00:33:45] Because I think people kind of forget that Baker can cook like he's really he can be very very good.

[00:33:55] When he's mobile and can do his little creation things in the backfield and he's very fun when what it's going well so.

[00:34:08] Yeah, I don't know it's it's going to be an interesting game I this is the first game where I feel like the Broncos have a legitimate chance to win.

[00:34:18] I know we talked that I don't know if I picked them to win or those that we both picked them to win here.

[00:34:25] And I miss spoke by the way talking about the Saints reminded me the Saints were the ones who beat up on the Panthers the box beat up on the Washington Ruth Bader Ginsburgs.

[00:34:35] So not tons better opponent my point still stands maybe not to of the greatest wins but I know I think we both out of win here.

[00:34:45] Yeah, I did have a win here so yeah that what it comes down to me is it's just like.

[00:34:54] If we couldn't.
