[00:00:41] We're in the midst of NFL. We've got WNBA Finals. What a shot from Ionescu last night.
[00:00:47] And now we have our favorite team, the Denver Nuggets.
[00:00:53] We're ready to preview them and the NBA season as a whole.
[00:00:56] This is our big blowout. We've wanted to bring you two episodes this week just so we could do this.
[00:01:01] Ryan, are you as excited as I am here?
[00:01:05] Yeah, I am. And you forgot to mention that the Nuggets also won their preseason game tonight.
[00:01:10] So we're coming in off a high, which is exciting.
[00:01:15] And, yeah, I am personally, I mean, the Broncos are winning, right?
[00:01:23] So it's hard to say this.
[00:01:24] But, like, I'm so ready to stop caring as much and have an excuse to, like, just start watching the NBA all the time
[00:01:33] and really putting most of my interest and thought into that instead of thinking about the Broncos for really too much time.
[00:01:44] They're occupying too much of my time right now.
[00:01:49] You know, hey, there's nothing wrong with wanting a little more Jokic in your life.
[00:01:55] And I think an unbelievable summer from Jokie Doke.
[00:02:02] I think let's just start there with him.
[00:02:04] He's obviously, he's a now three-time MVP.
[00:02:11] He's awesome.
[00:02:13] He's awesome.
[00:02:15] He's the best player we've seen in Denver in our lifetimes by a lot.
[00:02:22] And I saw recently that game five that he put on the Timberwolves out there where Anthony Edwards was like,
[00:02:33] I can't even be mad.
[00:02:34] He's like, he's just the best player in the world.
[00:02:36] I don't know.
[00:02:36] He just gave it to us tonight.
[00:02:38] Like, you know.
[00:02:39] And so I guess the first question that comes, and then I think we can get into an interesting conversation around here,
[00:02:49] because it feels like a lot of the national discourse is a little more negative around the Nuggets as far as Murray's falling off.
[00:02:56] We lost KCP.
[00:02:58] We've lost Bruce Brown.
[00:02:59] We've just lost a lot of veterans.
[00:03:04] And it kind of is like, well, how long can Jokic sustain this level?
[00:03:10] And I think you did see some areas where he was tired.
[00:03:16] He was worn down a little bit more than we've seen in past years.
[00:03:21] And that makes sense.
[00:03:22] He's getting older.
[00:03:23] You can't expect him to run the same minutes.
[00:03:25] But as far as, like, what you expect from this season, do you expect there to be a noticeable drop-off, I guess, would be the kind of more hot takey way?
[00:03:41] But, like, enough that we need other players to step up, I guess.
[00:03:48] Well, I think it depends on what your expectations are, right?
[00:03:52] Like, I think a lot of Nuggets fans that are not necessarily paying attention to the rest of the NBA are probably going to come into this with some unrealistic expectations that we're going to, like, walk away with the West and be the number one seed and all these things.
[00:04:09] Like, that's just not the reality of the Western Conference right now.
[00:04:12] So, I think with appropriate expectations, I think he's going to be awesome.
[00:04:17] Like, I'm not expecting him to drop off in any real noticeable way.
[00:04:22] This is the same guy that dragged that Fakou Kempazo, like, shell of itself to the playoffs and then took a game off of the Warriors.
[00:04:32] And that was really the series where all of those Warriors afterwards were like, Jokic is unbelievable.
[00:04:40] Like, he's so good.
[00:04:42] You guys do not understand how good he is.
[00:04:45] And I feel like it started becoming a little bit more cool to give Jokic his flowers after that series because it was just so obvious that the talent deficit was incredible.
[00:04:54] So, I think I'm expecting him to make shit look pretty good.
[00:05:02] Like, we don't necessarily have the roster depth that we had when we won the championship.
[00:05:08] I will probably get into this, but I certainly don't feel as good about that.
[00:05:12] But I feel excellent about Jokic playing unbelievable basketball for 80 games.
[00:05:21] Yeah, I think there's probably a few less games where Jokic – because now where you notice it, like, Jokic just kind of sleepwalks his way to 25, 10, and 8.
[00:05:38] But there are some games where Jokic is incredibly engaged on defense.
[00:05:44] And you just are like, oh, wow, we're like a really good defensive team when he is, like, really going around trying to – being willing to, like, really move his feet quick hands, really contesting everything.
[00:05:57] Well, and I think another way you can tell when those games are happening is he's communicating so much more.
[00:06:02] Like, he's so much more active in terms of yelling at coverage.
[00:06:06] And I know we'll see less of those.
[00:06:09] I think we saw less of them last year than we did the championship year.
[00:06:12] And I think, once again, we'll see a little bit less of those.
[00:06:16] I think that's just the reality of the situation.
[00:06:19] I think that Jokic just doesn't have it in the tank to do that as many times.
[00:06:27] I think there are still some games like the Celtics games or games that Jokic is like, hey, good basketball is being played here.
[00:06:35] Or, you know, or he just gets fired up for it.
[00:06:39] Then you're going to see those.
[00:06:40] But I think it's going to be single-digit games there.
[00:06:43] So I don't expect, like, MVP votes to go for him.
[00:06:46] I think there's voter fatigue.
[00:06:47] I think there's just a lot of things going against him there.
[00:06:52] I think he could be unbelievable offensively, though.
[00:06:56] I just don't.
[00:06:57] I think that he is going to be a lot more passive this season.
[00:07:06] I just don't know if that's true.
[00:07:08] I think Jamal could start off slow.
[00:07:10] And I think Jokic could try to, like, he has to step up, I think, in those moments when we don't.
[00:07:18] Like, our offensive unit took a hit.
[00:07:21] Like, we're going to have to be really efficient on the offensive end because we don't really have three-point shooting.
[00:07:27] So.
[00:07:29] Yes and no.
[00:07:30] It took a hit.
[00:07:31] I mean, yes, KCP is much more of a threat.
[00:07:35] But also, he scored eight points a game.
[00:07:37] Like, all of our big guys that we came into last year going, hey, if you want to dance with us, dance with Porter, dance with Gordon, dance with Jamal, dance with Jokic.
[00:07:49] They're all back.
[00:07:49] That's what I'm talking about.
[00:07:51] You literally don't have to guard Christian Brown right now.
[00:07:54] So.
[00:07:54] I don't think that that's as.
[00:07:57] I think that's going to happen in stretches.
[00:08:00] Have you seen him in the preseason?

[00:08:07] So, I guess, closing the Jokic thing.

[00:08:17] I think to the average fan who just kind of watches stats or looks at a box score at the end of the night.
[00:08:23] There's not going to be a very noticeable difference in those stats that Jokic puts up night to night.
[00:08:29] I think to people who really watch the games and really were locked in for that championship run the whole season.
[00:08:35] They know there were some games that Jokic came into.
[00:08:38] And you just said, oh, we're about to kick your ass.
[00:08:40] Like, there were some Clippers in Memphis games when we were in there for the one seed versus, you know, and those teams were kind of moving around with us.
[00:08:48] That it was just like, oh, Jokic has had quite enough of this competition.
[00:08:54] And he's going to bring it on both ends tonight.
[00:08:56] And to your point, the communication, the hands, the quick hands, all that stuff was just all over the place.
[00:09:01] And you're just like, yeah, you're probably losing tonight, man.
[00:09:05] So, I think that puts a bow on the Jokic.
[00:09:07] And I think now that gets us into some of our other things.
[00:09:10] You brought up Christian Brown, as I call him.
[00:09:17] The question is, Strother, again, has looked unbelievable.
[00:09:25] Christian, I think, will start the season as the starter.
[00:09:28] Do you see a world in which he does not finish as the starter?
[00:09:32] Yeah.
[00:09:33] And I guess what percentage would you put it on?
[00:09:35] Like, I can obviously see a world in which there's tons of reasons why that could happen.
[00:09:39] I think it will happen.
[00:09:43] So, I guess whatever that would be.
[00:09:45] Like, 65%, I feel.
[00:09:47] 70%.
[00:09:48] Because I think you'll just need to give it a try.
[00:09:52] And I think Christian is just so streaky.
[00:09:58] And it's not that he can't play well.
[00:10:01] And I want to say that this is almost more matchup dependent than anything.
[00:10:05] Like, there are definitely going to be times when Julian Strother is closing games.
[00:10:10] And I think that could happen early in the season.
[00:10:13] Where we just don't really need that second guard defender.
[00:10:18] And you're like, okay, well, if you're not doing that out there, Christian, we're going to go with Julian here.
[00:10:23] Because I think that's the tradeoff, right?
[00:10:25] Is the defensive end.
[00:10:28] So, I am excited by Strother.
[00:10:33] I think that Christian still has that sort of, like, it factor to me.
[00:10:39] Where it's like, he can just change a game with energy, essentially.
[00:10:46] And so, I still really like Christian.
[00:10:49] And I am not saying that he's going to lose his starting job because I think he sucks.
[00:10:54] I think it's just, like, Julian provides – the upside of a Julian Strother game is so much higher than the upside of a Christian Brown best game.
[00:11:07] So, yeah, I think Christian Brown is somewhat tied to Aaron Gordon shooting as well, right?
[00:11:16] Because we saw in points last year, Aaron Gordon looked a lot better from three.
[00:11:22] And so, if Aaron Gordon is hitting, now you have one below average shooter and we're fine with that.
[00:11:27] Christian is always going to be a good cutter.
[00:11:29] And he gives you a lot of size.
[00:11:31] And he is a son of a you-know-what on defense.
[00:11:35] And so, you know Malone loves that.
[00:11:40] So, in some ways, he's kind of tied to Gordon in an unfair way.
[00:11:46] I mean, it's not unfair.
[00:11:47] Make your shots, Christian.
[00:11:48] You're going to get wide open shots all the time.
[00:11:51] It's crazy, dude.
[00:11:52] How do we have – not to put too fine a point on it, but how do we have the one white guy in the NBA who can't shoot threes?
[00:12:02] Like, what was Christian doing all summer except – why are you not just shooting threes?
[00:12:08] Like, and it's not just that he is missing.
[00:12:14] The preseason, he looks scared, which is the scary part.
[00:12:19] Like, it's not – it hasn't – he hasn't even been looking at the last game.
[00:12:23] Here's the thing that I'll say.
[00:12:25] The thing that I've said is that even though Christian has played with Jokic, he has not played with Jokic for real, right?
[00:12:33] And we have seen this over and over again.
[00:12:35] When you play with Jokic, you have to get used to the fact that he's going to give you the ball.
[00:12:41] He's going to put the ball in your hands.
[00:12:42] And he's going to say, Christian, I'm coming to set a screen for you, buddy.
[00:12:46] And in your head, you're going to go, why the fuck are you setting a screen for me?
[00:12:51] Like, I should be setting double and triple screens for you, I think.
[00:12:55] And he's going to go, no, brother, it's fine.
[00:12:57] I come here.
[00:12:58] They will – I'll dive.
[00:12:59] They'll come with me.
[00:13:00] Just shoot this 15-footer.
[00:13:01] It's wide open.
[00:13:02] And I think we saw Monte take some time to adjust to it.
[00:13:07] I think we've seen – even Jamal took time.
[00:13:11] Gary Harris took time.
[00:13:12] KCP.
[00:13:13] And once you get it and you go, hey, if I just cut hard and pull up here for 15 feet, everyone goes with Jokic.
[00:13:22] It is free for me.
[00:13:23] And it was kind of our calm down play last year with KCP.
[00:13:26] So is that going to be missing?
[00:13:28] Yes.
[00:13:29] I think KCP provides a lot of the same on-ball defense stuff.
[00:13:35] And is a little bit more physical, which obviously is something that I think hurt KCP's value to the Nuggets was Anthony Edwards.
[00:13:45] And them being like, hey, you're a little too small there.
[00:13:48] And I don't think Edwards is going anywhere in the West.
[00:13:53] We need someone who can guard Anthony Edwards if we're going to pay them our last money, right?
[00:14:02] So am I concerned about it?
[00:14:04] Yes.
[00:14:05] But to me, the beauty of Jokic and the beauty of this team has always been we do not need a consistent third scorer.
[00:14:17] We just need someone to come along, right?
[00:14:21] Jokic is going to get people good shots.
[00:14:23] He's going to get – and we just need a few people to come along, and all of a sudden you're going to be at 115, 120.
[00:14:29] And especially in Denver with Westbrook, all that stuff, the pace that I think that second unit is going to put on people, you're going to be fine.
[00:14:39] So I agree with you.
[00:14:40] I think it's important for him to stay mentally tough and not put too much pressure on himself to be like, I've got to be this.
[00:14:47] No, you don't.
[00:14:48] Play defense, play hard, and when you're open, let that thing fly, man.
[00:14:52] Like don't think about it.
[00:14:53] Just let that thing fly, and I think it'll be okay.
[00:14:56] I wanted to ask you here because you talked about the shooting.
[00:15:01] It's been mentioned a lot in the preseason, and it's been noticeable the amount of off-ball movement that Michael Porter Jr. has been doing.
[00:15:10] He talked about his conditioning.
[00:15:11] He talked about trying to do more of that stuff.
[00:15:15] It really seems like the Nuggets are trying to use him a little bit more of a runaround to where you're not getting as many stationary stuff, and you can use Christian and Gordon, who are both very solid, very good screeners, to kind of get them going, get guys confused, get guys on switches, and then you're still going to have the two-man game on the other side.
[00:15:42] To me, that feels like a great wrinkle for the Nuggets.
[00:15:46] Until the second.
[00:15:47] Do you think it is a regular season change?
[00:15:50] Or do you think, like, because this team can get so comfortable with the two-man of Murray and Jokic because it's so effective.
[00:15:57] I think it's something that we'll see in stretches.
[00:16:01] I don't think it's going to be something that they're running on a regular basis.
[00:16:05] Like, the ball is, should, is, and should be in Jokic's hands, and, like, that stuff is nice.
[00:16:12] But unless we need it, I don't think it's going to be a regular occurrence in the – but I do think when we're staggering or the second unit or they're staggered with the second unit, then I think it becomes really important because that's all you need around of what Russell Westbrook.
[00:16:32] So, I don't think when Jokic and Murray are on the floor, it's going to happen all that much.
[00:16:37] But I could see it being something that we throw out.
[00:16:41] And I think it's really good for the second unit to start getting used to moving like that because, to your point, Jokic is so good that you can kind of just stand still.
[00:16:52] It'll probably get you open somehow anyways.
[00:16:56] So, yeah.
[00:16:58] I don't know.
[00:16:59] It's – I am sad that we don't have KCP anymore, but it's also not – like, people, I think, are making it out to be a much bigger thing than I think it's going to be.
[00:17:17] Just because I think between these guys that we're talking about and some subtle adjustments and, honestly, people taking a step, like, people taking that hopeful, natural, progressive step of just being in the league for another year.
[00:17:33] I think we can easily replace that production, and I'm not that worried about the defensive end.
[00:17:42] But it's – those steps we haven't seen yet.
[00:17:45] And I'm sure we're going to touch on some of those guys.
[00:17:48] Yeah.
[00:17:49] I mean, I think – I think Porter's looked good preseason.
[00:17:52] I've liked what I've seen.
[00:17:53] And I think what you said there is really the key point.
[00:17:58] One, it's not that you're going to need it all the time in the regular season.
[00:18:03] But getting the reps with the first unit to keep Michael in the habit of doing it for the second unit, number one, to get points there.
[00:18:13] And two, for – we saw in that Timberwolves game that they were really clamping down and making it very hard to get into your actions.
[00:18:22] Well, now you can't help as much if all of a sudden we are running our 6'10 shooter off double screens on the other side,
[00:18:31] and those guys are like, well, Gordon's going to fly for an oop or Christian's going to cut across my face.
[00:18:36] These guys are going to double screen.
[00:18:38] I got – now all of a sudden it's not people standing there watching and going, I am helping here.
[00:18:44] And so I think any time you can get a depth of options in your offense, that is good.
[00:18:50] Now, are we maybe going to see some more turnovers early in the season because Jokic is used to Porter standing in that corner or standing on that wing and he's maybe moving?
[00:18:59] Yeah, of course, right?
[00:19:01] But I think those growing pains are worth it, right?
[00:19:05] Because we talked about it the championship year.
[00:19:08] You and I were saying when you have a championship caliber team, every decision you make should be what gives us the best chance to win the title.
[00:19:18] And you need to get lucky to win the title.
[00:19:20] You need to have injury luck.
[00:19:21] You need to have right matchups, right things, all that stuff, right?
[00:19:27] But having Michael Porter in the zone and a part of this team protects you from some of the Murray liability that I think we should get into next because not been good.
[00:19:40] Well, one thing I do want to say about Mike is I think there are two things that are going to be big for him this year.
[00:19:52] And I think the first thing I'm going to be looking at is his rebounds.
[00:19:58] And because he does look bigger and he looks fit.
[00:20:02] And if he can now start to – he's been an inconsistently good rebounder.
[00:20:09] Like it hasn't been a terrible part of his game.
[00:20:11] But if he can be consistent and we can play him at the four, like that really opens things up.
[00:20:21] So, it's – he I think is a real linchpin to the team.
[00:20:27] And when I'm talking about that natural development, like that includes him because I think part of, you know, the expressed reason that he put on this weight and, you know, why he got in the gym so much is that he wanted to be able to play bigger.
[00:20:43] So, the other thing that I will mention on the Strother point, just to quickly go back to it, which I would – I only bring up because we're dealing with Michael Malone.
[00:20:56] But he was also in Denver all summer and practicing with the coaching staff.
[00:21:02] Strother was.
[00:21:04] And Malone eats that shit up.
[00:21:07] So, it's – if you want some bonus points.
[00:21:10] And I think we can get more in the Strother when we get to this bench unit, which I think is actually like probably the most interesting bench unit we've had during the Jokic years.
[00:21:21] Maybe the Michael Beasley when Jokic was still a puppy.
[00:21:24] Those were fun bench units too.
[00:21:26] But shout out to Beasley, by the way.
[00:21:29] Still getting checks in Detroit.
[00:21:31] He's still in the NBA.
[00:21:33] I've been really diving into the NBA and I saw Beasley there and I was like, oh, he's about to chuck in Detroit.
[00:21:39] Him and Tobias, baby.
[00:21:43] But I think Murray, it makes sense to talk about as kind of our last piece.
[00:21:50] I think Aaron Gordon, quickly, I think he's pretty stable.
[00:21:55] I think he is who he is right now.
[00:21:57] I think he's been good in the preseason.
[00:21:59] I think he'll continue to be good.
[00:22:01] I think in the playoffs he will play physical.
[00:22:03] He will play good defense.
[00:22:05] And he now is so comfortable in his role that he knows like, hey, if I'm open for three, I'm going to shoot the three.
[00:22:12] And he's so good at the dunker spot.
[00:22:14] He's so good at all that stuff.
[00:22:16] I think he's pretty comfortable in his role and he is what he is.
[00:22:20] Right?
[00:22:24] Murray, let's just get to the reason why so many people for the first time ever, despite Jokic, never having gone under his over-under in the past like six years.
[00:22:34] Why so many people are taking under 51 and a half.
[00:22:37] And it's Jamal Murray.
[00:22:38] He was terrible in the Olympics.
[00:22:41] And his body language has been kind of weird in some of these preseason games.
[00:22:45] And I don't want to body language doctor him fully.
[00:22:49] But like some of these ones where he's like, he just looks out of breath.
[00:22:54] I think the Malone conditioning comment was somewhat thrown at him as far as like some of these guys don't look in good shape.
[00:23:04] I think Murray is a concern for me.
[00:23:09] We're officially on Murray concern watch here, right?
[00:23:12] Because we need him to be not all the time, that mother effing Murray.
[00:23:20] But he has to at least be threatening to make an appearance.
[00:23:23] Yeah.
[00:23:24] I mean, it was much better tonight.
[00:23:26] He was five for six from three tonight and looked a little bit more bouncy.
[00:23:32] But it is concerning.
[00:23:36] And the part that's concerning to me is I don't really know why it's this way.
[00:23:41] Like, it's not the knee anymore.
[00:23:43] Like, he should be healthy from the knee.
[00:23:47] He seemed to be hurt in the Olympics or just didn't really want to like fully play.
[00:23:55] Because they were talking about he was like a minutes restriction.
[00:23:59] And there was all sorts of weird stuff going on there.
[00:24:02] So I'm kind of that I wrote off sort of I was it perked my interest.
[00:24:09] But I was like, oh, something weird is going on here anyways.
[00:24:12] And then there was the weird stuff about the world championships where you just like stopped practicing.
[00:24:17] Essentially, he was like, yeah, I'm done.
[00:24:19] Like, I'm not going to do that.
[00:24:21] So I don't know.
[00:24:24] So it's certainly a concern.
[00:24:30] But I am going to give him like the first month and a half of the season before I really start ragging on him for being bad.
[00:24:40] Because I do think like players play themselves into shape all the time.
[00:24:44] That shouldn't take very long, whatever.
[00:24:46] But if we don't start to see glimpses of like Murray that from the championship run, then I'm going to be worried.
[00:24:56] Yeah, it's just it's concerning to me because he's always been, you know, all the stories of him and his dad in Canada and couldn't kick him out of the gym, couldn't do any of that.
[00:25:06] You know, like it just makes me wonder, like, is some of that wear and tear starting to come back on him?
[00:25:11] Those stories are a long time ago.
[00:25:15] Like, and but you know, like you hear about players coming into the NBA, their bodies are just different now because they've been playing so much AAU, so much stuff.
[00:25:23] They just aren't made to hold up as much.
[00:25:26] So I do worry about it.
[00:25:28] I 100% agree with you.
[00:25:29] I'm going to see it.
[00:25:32] And I do think this is kind of the perfect Jamal Murray narrative, right?
[00:25:40] Like I saw something, some anonymous GM, which by the way, anonymous GM things are the stupidest things on the planet.
[00:25:48] Number one, like if it's the Pistons GM, do I care what that guy has to say?
[00:25:54] Like, that guy is an idiot, you know, like if it's the Lakers GM, I care what that guy has to say?
[00:26:04] No.
[00:26:05] And but they were basically saying, I think the Nuggets are in trouble.
[00:26:08] I don't think LeBron is answering any of those surveys.
[00:26:11] They said Murray's cooked and Porter is just an offensive one-way player.
[00:26:17] And I think compared to last year when everyone was like, including us, we were like, dude, this is Murray's year.
[00:26:23] Like, just be consistent.
[00:26:24] Let's get an all-star.
[00:26:25] Let's get this big money.
[00:26:27] Let's go.
[00:26:29] He doesn't have the contract on him, but he does kind of have all these doubts from the outside.
[00:26:35] And I think barring like some very bad body language or just like lack of effort, I think Murray is very beloved by this fan base.
[00:26:45] So he doesn't have to worry about like Nuggets fans turning on him in ball arena quickly.
[00:26:52] And I think he kind of does best when there's like a nobody respects me.
[00:26:57] Oh, I'm crap now.
[00:26:59] Oh, okay.
[00:27:00] Like, oh, I suck.
[00:27:02] You know, like Porter.
[00:27:03] Oh, wow.
[00:27:03] I'm barely in the top 100 players in the NBA.
[00:27:07] Okay.

[00:27:08] I think this Nuggets team just does a little bit better with that.
[00:27:13] There should be an edge to them.
[00:27:16] And I think that that's exciting.

[00:27:18] There should be sort of a like nobody believes in us type of attitude that is happening here because realistically, and I'm sure we're about to talk about the bench, but like I kind of like this team more than last year's team.
[00:27:33] I don't know if they're going to be better at basketball necessarily, but I like them a lot more.
[00:27:39] And I think that the potential for them is much, much higher than it was last year.
[00:27:47] We had known commodities last year.
[00:27:49] Like we ran the championship team back literally.
[00:27:53] I mean, we had everybody that we had.
[00:27:55] Slightly worse parts.
