[00:00:40] Here we go again, it's our Filmsplosion!

[00:00:44] The movie came down on it, it could get long,

[00:00:48] so bring your hyperprofen!

[00:00:50] I'm telling you all it's a Filmsplosion!

[00:00:52] What's got the best acting?

[00:00:54] What's got the best direction?

[00:00:55] The Greenville Crop, here's our selection!

[00:00:58] From comedy to drama, even block exploitation!

[00:01:01] I'm telling you all it's a Filmsplosion!

[00:01:04] Hey everybody, it's not often that four of the six Reel Nerds

[00:01:36] are in the same room, but when we are,

[00:01:38] it's usually because it's a Filmsplosion.

[00:01:40] And it's been somewhat of a delay for this Filmsplosion

[00:01:42] as my partner in crime, Brad, has been busy making stuff.

[00:01:47] Oh yeah.

[00:01:48] And so now after, man, like a four month break,

[00:01:52] we are proud to present Filmsplosion 1994.

[00:01:57] I am joined by All The Way At The End,

[00:01:59] Corinne,

[00:01:59] and Zach.

[00:02:01] And I already introduced Brad.

[00:02:03] But you can do it again.

[00:02:04] Brad, who's wearing Batman, so I need more of Batman.

[00:02:11] If you've never listened to a Filmsplosion,

[00:02:13] where have you been?

[00:02:14] We have so many of them.

[00:02:16] But we pick our ten favorite films from the year 1994.

[00:02:19] Now these aren't usually the critical darlings.

[00:02:22] Although some do pop up, it's our personal favorite films.

[00:02:27] And we have an accompanying Blu-ray.

[00:02:29] If you're listening to this, you will hear the trailer for the film

[00:02:32] if it's introduced for the first time.

[00:02:34] If it's introduced a second time, you won't hear it.

[00:02:38] But Brad has also made this Blu-ray in an order

[00:02:41] where it's obviously he's first.

[00:02:42] Again, I think it's like the third one in a row.

[00:02:45] Again, it all depends on your list.

[00:02:47] And your list sucks so you're in third place.

[00:02:48] I just noticed your new Nablus Visions have that sweet, dude.

[00:02:51] Thank you.

[00:02:51] Yeah.

[00:02:52] Because usually I just get lost in your eyes.

[00:02:54] At this time it's, you know, I notice the hat.

[00:02:58] But before we start this, you will be able to see the real nerd

[00:03:00] September 13th, 14th and 15th at the Colorado Festival of Horror.

[00:03:05] We will be covering it as media so we won't have a booth.

[00:03:09] We'll be walking around.

[00:03:11] I am hoping, I was told that we might be able

[00:03:15] to interview all the Friday the 13th people there.

[00:03:17] So that's my goal.

[00:03:18] You mean you will?

[00:03:19] Yeah, I mean, of course I will.

[00:03:21] I mean, Brad, you'll just be there and just nod along.

[00:03:24] I felt bad.

[00:03:24] We did this interview with a director about two months ago,

[00:03:28] month ago.

[00:03:30] And he sent us a screener for the film and I watched it.

[00:03:33] And Brad saw this film at the Esquire.

[00:03:37] And he came on and, you know, he says, oh, 15 minutes

[00:03:40] or if it's going well, let's keep going.

[00:03:42] And it ended up being like a 40-minute interview.

[00:03:45] Because we had a great interview.

[00:03:47] If you have a listen to it, you can find it on RealMakesPodcast.com.

[00:03:50] And then towards the end at like the 38th minute, I go, oh, fuck,

[00:03:52] Brad's here too.

[00:03:53] Because Brad didn't say a word.

[00:03:55] I just kept going.

[00:03:57] Again, I was at the Q&A so I already had answers for me.

[00:04:02] So there was a restroom for me to ask.

[00:04:04] But the director is really impressed with my knowledge.

[00:04:08] He was?

[00:04:09] He was.

[00:04:09] He's like, man, this guy really paid attention.

[00:04:11] That's H. Nelson Tracy by the way from breakup season.

[00:04:13] Yeah, breakup season.

[00:04:14] If you're coming to a theater near you, make sure you check it out.

[00:04:17] It's a great film.

[00:04:17] Yeah, probably coming to a theater this holiday season.

[00:04:19] Yeah.

[00:04:20] If everything goes well for them.

[00:04:21] So it should be fun.

[00:04:22] But yeah, film explosion.

[00:04:23] These are long.

[00:04:24] So we should probably start and just know that Brad's List

[00:04:27] will be the worst one followed closely by Zach, Corinne,

[00:04:30] maybe, no, you and Zach will tie for the second worst

[00:04:33] and then I'll be the best.

[00:04:35] I'll be the worst.

[00:04:36] It's fine, Brian.

[00:04:37] You guys are not going to like any of my takes.

[00:04:38] I like how you read out of order.

[00:04:40] It must be fascinating to watch you read a book.

[00:04:42] You know, I found I actually have this like special trait

[00:04:47] that I didn't know was that uncommon is I can read really well upside down.

[00:04:51] And like so if a book is if Brad's holding a book and it's,

[00:04:55] you know, the pages are going away from me,

[00:04:56] I can read really well that way.

[00:04:58] And I didn't know.

[00:04:59] I thought everybody could do it.

[00:05:01] Hold on.

[00:05:01] I'm getting a call.

[00:05:02] What? Yeah.

[00:05:03] Yeah, he's here.

[00:05:05] Ryan, I'm being told you're not the only one with gifts.

[00:05:09] By the way, where have you guys been this summer?

[00:05:11] Yeah.

[00:05:12] What the fuck?

[00:05:13] Excuse me.

[00:05:13] I hung out at Pizza Hut booth and no,

[00:05:17] I've just been doing a lot of Ballyhoo stuff.

[00:05:21] In fact, we as I'm just before I got here,

[00:05:24] I recorded episode on Gunged in.

[00:05:26] Yeah.

[00:05:26] Well, fuck Zach because he did an episode about a Kerry Grant movie

[00:05:29] and didn't invite me on.

[00:05:30] So I'm sorry.

[00:05:31] That's cold-blooded.

[00:05:32] Yeah.

[00:05:33] These I thought this guy liked me.

[00:05:35] It's like, oh, you know so much about Kerry Grant.

[00:05:36] I said thank you, Zach had some random Yahoo on there.

[00:05:39] Can I tease something in which I did invite Ryan to do,

[00:05:42] which is covering peanuts for the first time.

[00:05:44] Yeah.

[00:05:45] I believe we'll start with the Christmas special and then next year

[00:05:49] we do great pumpkin Charlie.

[00:05:50] Yeah.

[00:05:51] I mean, I'm not really concerned about it because I will make

[00:05:55] an appearance on the Divine 39.

[00:05:57] Yes, the Divine 39, which we are,

[00:05:59] we're going to be going through the grand year of 1939,

[00:06:01] which is lauded by so many people as the year that pumped

[00:06:05] out so many classics.

[00:06:06] Although honestly, 1999, 2007, those years can provide

[00:06:11] some great competition too.

[00:06:12] For sure.

[00:06:13] And Corinne, I've heard you've been hiking this summer.

[00:06:16] Yep.

[00:06:17] That's all.

[00:06:19] Just hiking dude, nothing else.

[00:06:20] But not cool enough to hang out with us.

[00:06:22] I sent in showtimes.

[00:06:23] I don't know what else you want from me.

[00:06:25] You have.

[00:06:25] You're cool enough to tweet constantly about the Bad Batch.

[00:06:28] So Corinne, now that we have, sorry about it,

[00:06:30] I'm going to sidetrack this film explosion.

[00:06:32] Now that we have you here, why do you love the Bad Batch

[00:06:34] so much?

[00:06:35] It's a great Star Wars story.

[00:06:38] I love the characters and the journey that they went on

[00:06:41] and the finale was very satisfying.

[00:06:44] So it's completely over?

[00:06:46] Yeah, the series finale was like four months ago.

[00:06:50] Was it only four months ago?

[00:06:51] I know.

[00:06:53] Corinne, I looked because you tweet about it constantly

[00:06:56] and I went to your page.

[00:06:58] Do you X about it?

[00:06:59] How do you say it now?

[00:07:00] Tweet.

[00:07:00] I don't care.

[00:07:01] Exactly.

[00:07:02] No one calls it X anyway.

[00:07:04] Is it stupid?

[00:07:06] And you have like 39,000 tweets now.

[00:07:10] I don't know how.

[00:07:11] That's the magic Jack Benny number.

[00:07:12] I just retweet anything I find interesting

[00:07:14] even if it's not about Star Wars.

[00:07:16] At the end of the Bad Batch, do they become the good batch?

[00:07:19] Yes.

[00:07:19] They're very good batch.

[00:07:20] So they've baked in the oven long enough.

[00:07:23] Oh.

[00:07:25] Well, we're glad that you...

[00:07:27] That joke was cooked to perfection by the way.

[00:07:29] I wanted to join you for the Twisters episode

[00:07:31] and then you guys never call me.

[00:07:34] Well, Brad and I schedule hasn't really lined up

[00:07:36] very well this summer.

[00:07:39] And yeah, so we get...

[00:07:42] We don't know when we're going to record.

[00:07:44] It's often like are you free today?

[00:07:46] Yeah, okay good.

[00:07:47] But good news to everybody here.

[00:07:49] I think I'm going to move back down very soon.

[00:07:53] I found a place I think I might put an offer in on.

[00:07:56] Welcome back.

[00:07:57] Yeah.

[00:07:58] Your dreams were your...

[00:07:59] What makes me really excited is

[00:08:02] it's most likely to be a town home

[00:08:04] but the basement has a living room,

[00:08:07] a bedroom and a closet.

[00:08:10] And my wife already told me I can have the whole basement.

[00:08:13] So...

[00:08:14] Podcast studio, right?

[00:08:15] There we go.

[00:08:15] That's all I care about.

[00:08:16] Yeah, so I'll have...

[00:08:18] Hopefully I'll have a room where I can put all my

[00:08:20] Blu-rays and DVDs

[00:08:21] and that'll double as...

[00:08:23] So it's kind of like a theater,

[00:08:24] a personal theater.

[00:08:25] So that'll double as the room where we can podcast in

[00:08:28] and then I'll have...

[00:08:29] Because my wife wants to change the upstairs living room

[00:08:32] into a reading room.

[00:08:34] And I...

[00:08:34] To my...

[00:08:35] My suite.

[00:08:36] Because then I can put all my movies downstairs

[00:08:38] and then I can build a little platform

[00:08:40] and put all my comic books downstairs.

[00:08:42] It'll be the coolest place in the world.

[00:08:43] And then you are digging through the walls

[00:08:45] and then all of a sudden you discover

[00:08:46] that there's another...

[00:08:47] Another room.

[00:08:49] And you can create a back cave.

[00:08:50] No, I'd create the spider lair.

[00:08:53] The spider lair?

[00:08:54] Okay, that's...

[00:08:54] Spider-Man doesn't have one.

[00:08:56] I was gonna say, yeah, his apartment?

[00:08:59] Just recreate it to look like a New York apartment.

[00:09:00] And Spider-Man would never be on the bottom

[00:09:02] because you'd have to leave.

[00:09:03] That's why he always gets an apartment

[00:09:05] in a skyscraper.

[00:09:06] But spiders also crawl from up under the ground.

[00:09:09] Yeah, something like that.

[00:09:11] So I mean, I don't know if we'll get it

[00:09:12] but this place I want...

[00:09:15] Goes on the market on the 5th.

[00:09:16] So I'm gonna go down there and just put an offer.

[00:09:18] And I haven't even seen it yet.

[00:09:19] I've just seen pictures.

[00:09:21] But they redid the whole thing

[00:09:23] and it looks really nice.

[00:09:26] And my wife really likes it.

[00:09:27] And my mortgage won't go up, so that's great.

[00:09:29] What area?

[00:09:30] I'll be Green Mountain.

[00:09:32] Okay, cool.

[00:09:33] Not to be confused with candy mountain, which is more...

[00:09:36] Yeah, or Red Mountain or...

[00:09:39] Chartreuse Mountain, which is...

[00:09:41] So hopefully it'll go well even if it doesn't

[00:09:43] we're looking to move back down here.

[00:09:45] Nice, wonderful.

[00:09:46] Yep, so soon you guys won't be able to escape.

[00:09:50] But what's your excuse now?

[00:09:53] You'll have to see more movies with us too.

[00:09:55] Because then you were living in Green Mountain when I met you.

[00:09:59] And you know Moana 2 is coming out?

[00:10:02] It is.

[00:10:02] And Moana was the first episode I wanted to be on with you guys.

[00:10:05] Really, I don't remember that far back as I'm old.

[00:10:08] I remember Burt Wonderstone because that movie was so weird.

[00:10:11] It's a great movie though.

[00:10:12] It's a great fucking movie.

[00:10:14] There's definitely stuff coming up that I'd want to chat with you guys.

[00:10:16] Brad, do you remember the first movie we saw together

[00:10:18] that wasn't real nerd related?

[00:10:21] I don't, I'm asking.

[00:10:22] Well you guys went to high school together.

[00:10:24] I know, I'm thinking of like a 99 movie.

[00:10:27] Yeah, I want to...

[00:10:28] I don't know, I remember with Carson, our friend Carson

[00:10:32] we ditched a drawing to go see Godzilla.

[00:10:35] That was 97 or 98.

[00:10:37] Oh that Godzilla.

[00:10:38] Yeah.

[00:10:40] I'll never forget the year that we were living in Godzilla.

[00:10:41] It happened somewhere around there.

[00:10:42] Because we were hanging out with the same people.

[00:10:45] Because you were friends with Carson too.

[00:10:48] You didn't ditch with us to go see Godzilla, did you?

[00:10:51] No.

[00:10:52] I also didn't see a lot of people with Carson.

[00:10:55] I know when we worked at GameStop we probably

[00:10:58] for sure something.

[00:11:00] I remember when we put Freddy vs. Jason on the screen

[00:11:02] at GameStop or Game Crazy during the day

[00:11:05] and watched it because we didn't care.

[00:11:07] We did what we wanted.

[00:11:08] Yeah that's right, we ran that game crazy.

[00:11:10] We knew how to run it best.

[00:11:12] Anyways, hey Brad!

[00:11:13] Hey, what's up?

[00:11:13] I have the 10th film from 1994.

[00:11:16] Why don't you introduce your film and play us the trailer?

[00:11:19] Well let's travel back in time to 1994 when I'm

[00:11:22] leaving elementary school for junior high

[00:11:25] and yeah, not really knowing much about

[00:11:30] Van Damme movies at this point.

[00:11:32] But my number 10 is a Van Damme movie.

[00:11:40] You all remember Dr. Hans Kleindast?

[00:11:43] Well for the past 20 years he's been trying

[00:11:44] to keep his face off the cover of Time Magazine

[00:11:46] doing research.

[00:11:47] His field of research has been time travel.

[00:11:52] Walker, how have you been Lyle?

[00:11:55] I'm not hurting anybody.

[00:11:56] You can't go forward because the future hasn't happened yet.

[00:11:59] It turns out if you go back and you change something

[00:12:01] it's serious.

[00:12:02] It could be catastrophic.

[00:12:04] We have to form a brand new covert agency

[00:12:07] to police this technology and to actually protect time.

[00:12:10] It'll be called the Time Enforcement Commission

[00:12:11] or the TEC.

[00:12:13] This man seated next to me is Commander Eugene Matuzak

[00:12:15] of the Washington Police Department.

[00:12:17] He is our choice to run the commission.

[00:12:20] Eugene Walker, I've heard a great deal about you.

[00:12:22] And I've heard a lot about you Senator.

[00:12:23] The same matter can't occupy the same space

[00:12:25] at the same time.

[00:12:27] Going back in time is a pretty easy way

[00:12:29] to make money.

[00:12:29] I hope you keep trying to get your man.

[00:12:31] I never quit.

[00:12:32] I cannot go back to save her.

[00:12:34] This scoundrel back is not going back

[00:12:36] to steal money.

[00:12:38] I have companies for it.

[00:12:40] I'm consentless.

[00:12:41] Did they say that?

[00:12:41] I can't tell you anything.

[00:12:42] This guy's gonna roll right over.

[00:12:47] Surprise.

[00:12:48] Don't look at him.

[00:12:50] I really could care less whether you like me or not.

[00:12:52] Who sent you?

[00:12:53] You're not going back.

[00:13:10] That's one of the dangers of having an agency like this.

[00:13:12] Well, imagine the dangers of not having it.

[00:13:14] I can't go back.

[00:13:16] The younger one was dead.

[00:13:17] If he were dead, he would not be here.

[00:13:20] You don't need the press.

[00:13:21] You don't need endorsements.

[00:13:22] You don't even need the tool.

[00:13:23] You need money.

[00:13:24] The division weapons already cost me an apple tree.

[00:13:26] It's me.

[00:13:27] Ten years from now.

[00:13:28] The defendant has been found guilty.

[00:13:30] They would come back as many times as it takes.

[00:13:36] I trust you'll keep working.

[00:13:38] You can better know.

[00:13:40] Stay here, Walker.

[00:13:41] In my future, you're dead.

[00:13:42] Am I dead?

[00:13:43] Not dead.

[00:13:44] I'm just excited about going back and changing that.

[00:13:46] My calling must make some changes.

[00:13:58] Yeah, so my number 10 is Time Cop,

[00:14:02] which isn't one of my favorite Van Damme movies,

[00:14:06] but it's oddly enough, it's his highest grossing of his films.

[00:14:09] Is it really?

[00:14:11] Like, X-Menables 2 is higher,

[00:14:13] but he's not like the star of that one.

[00:14:15] But as far as his like 90s, 80s, 90s output,

[00:14:18] that was his highest grosser.

[00:14:19] It's a cool movie.

[00:14:21] Like, the concept is really cool.

[00:14:22] Yeah, it's based on a comic book.

[00:14:23] Yeah, Dark Horse comic.

[00:14:24] And I feel like it's fairly well known.

[00:14:26] Like, even I've heard of it before.

[00:14:27] Yeah, it's like...

[00:14:28] I'm surprised it doesn't have like a

[00:14:31] Shout Factory or Kino Blu-Ray yet.

[00:14:33] Yeah, it's definitely a Scream Factory style

[00:14:36] because it's a sci-fi action movie that's pretty violent.

[00:14:39] Is it Warner Brothers?

[00:14:40] Because that might be why it doesn't have a...

[00:14:42] Maybe New Line, I don't know.

[00:14:44] Seems like a New Line movie.

[00:14:45] Yeah, could be.

[00:14:47] I think it's Universal actually.

[00:14:49] But yeah, if you don't know what Time Cop is,

[00:14:52] Van Damme plays this guy who

[00:14:56] some people are using time to go back,

[00:14:58] time travel to go back and like make money off of time.

[00:15:01] And then they end up killing his wife in the process of it.

[00:15:05] So he becomes like part of this

[00:15:07] time police force that

[00:15:09] tracks all these people down to stop them.

[00:15:13] And yeah, when he's doing that,

[00:15:15] he also tries to find a way to like

[00:15:16] resurrect his wife in the process.

[00:15:19] And yeah, that's about it.

[00:15:20] All I know is that in the trailer,

[00:15:22] it had a shot of him jumping up on like a dryer

[00:15:24] or a counter and doing the splits in his underwear.

[00:15:27] You're just supposed to be really impressed with his physique.

[00:15:29] Yeah, there's a rainstorm going on

[00:15:30] and there's electrical wire that hits the floor

[00:15:32] and shocks the other guy.

[00:15:33] But so he jumps up on the counter to avoid it.

[00:15:35] Cause reasons.

[00:15:35] But why was he doing the splits?

[00:15:37] Cause he can.

[00:15:38] Cause if you have a Van Damme movie

[00:15:40] and you want to see his signature move in it,

[00:15:43] so they contrived like,

[00:15:44] hey, let's get the floor and have him jump on the counter.

[00:15:47] How about a split kick? Why couldn't he do that?

[00:15:50] That's not a splits.

[00:15:52] Yeah, it's more of like look what he can do.

[00:15:54] It really started in double impact when he was in Bloodsport.

[00:15:57] Was it Bloodsport?

[00:15:57] Yeah, he's got his feet on either of these chairs

[00:16:00] and he's meditating.

[00:16:00] Oh, that's right.

[00:16:01] I just remember the one in double impact

[00:16:02] cause he's in like aerobics class.

[00:16:05] Yeah.

[00:16:07] Well, see that makes sense.

[00:16:09] I don't know.

[00:16:09] Well, he's avoiding and that's,

[00:16:11] he knew that he could jump up there

[00:16:12] and do the splits and not get electrocuted.

[00:16:15] You could also just jump up there like a normal person.

[00:16:18] No, that's not cool.

[00:16:21] That would be like,

[00:16:23] that would like.

[00:16:24] It's like she never does an old Van Damme is.

[00:16:26] Karen, let me try to translate this.

[00:16:28] This would be like asking Arnold Schwarzenegger

[00:16:30] to not have a great one liner

[00:16:32] after he has blown somebody's brains out

[00:16:34] or before he's blown somebody's brains out.

[00:16:36] Or he's yelling at kindergarteners.

[00:16:38] Yes, it's expected with the territory.

[00:16:40] This is his version of having a one liner.

[00:16:43] It's, it's a split.

[00:16:46] I would watch that.

[00:16:48] Arnold Schwarzenegger just randomly did the splits somewhere.

[00:16:52] Oh, he should have done it in true lies.

[00:16:54] In the helicopter to the building.

[00:16:57] Just done the splits that way to bridge it.

[00:16:59] Yeah, why not?

[00:17:00] Then everybody walks over him to freedom.

[00:17:02] Yes.

[00:17:03] Zach number 10.

[00:17:04] All right.

[00:17:04] My number 10 is also based off of a comic book property.

[00:17:08] But before it was a comic book property,

[00:17:10] it was a radio property and here it is.

[00:17:14] He was consumed by evil.

[00:17:19] For as long as you can remember,

[00:17:21] he's struggled against her own black heart.

[00:17:24] She'll throw him.

[00:17:26] Every man pays a price for redemption.

[00:17:28] I'm not looking for redemption.

[00:17:31] You have no choice,

[00:17:33] but I'll teach you to use your black shadow to fight evil.

[00:17:37] He became the shadow.

[00:17:40] I didn't see anything.

[00:17:42] I swear.

[00:17:43] Dumple.

[00:17:47] Who's there?

[00:17:49] Did you think you'd get away with it?

[00:17:50] Did you think I would know?

[00:17:55] The world is in danger.

[00:17:59] Report.

[00:18:00] Police investigation of murder.

[00:18:02] Agent advises inquiry.

[00:18:05] Who knows what powers stir in the night?

[00:18:08] Whenever you did, it's in the past.

[00:18:11] Join me.

[00:18:12] Inside you beats a heart of darkness.

[00:18:15] I do what I do to fight back the evil inside me.

[00:18:18] But some part of it is still there.

[00:18:20] Waiting.

[00:18:22] Genghis Khan conquered half of the world in his lifetime.

[00:18:26] I intend to finish the job.

[00:18:28] And when the adventure begins,

[00:18:31] activate the power.

[00:18:33] Who knows where it will end?

[00:18:38] Alec Baldwin,

[00:18:40] John Lone,

[00:18:42] Penelope Ann Miller,

[00:18:44] and Tim Curry.

[00:18:46] Who lurks in the hearts of men?

[00:18:50] The Shadow.

[00:19:03] So my number 10 is The Shadow.

[00:19:07] Now I live in a world of grand delusion,

[00:19:10] so I'm assuming that this was the highest grossing film of 1994.

[00:19:15] No, the basic story of it is honestly also the same story as Batman Begins,

[00:19:20] where a white guy hanging out in a country that is not America

[00:19:27] does bad shit and then finds a way to learn ways to fight evil

[00:19:32] rather than embrace evil.

[00:19:37] The story of LeMond Cranston is basically that he learns how to cloud men's minds.

[00:19:42] So he takes these powers back to New York City to fight the agents of evil

[00:19:46] with his own agents of good.

[00:19:48] And in the process, he comes across a dreaded enemy,

[00:19:51] Shi Wang Khan, the last descendant of Genghis Khan.

[00:19:54] Yeah, there's a dearth of movies based on old time radio shows.

[00:19:59] So I grew to love this the moment I found out it existed and it has never left me.

[00:20:05] There's a lot of, you know, it's not the best superhero movie in the world

[00:20:09] by any stretch of the imagination,

[00:20:11] but it's one that I very much enjoy and still have fun rewatching.

[00:20:16] The cast is all excellent in the roles they're asked to play for the most part.

[00:20:21] Even to the point of Ian McKellen playing a fairly decent bumbling scientist

[00:20:27] who has color blind, which leads to a joke in the movie.

[00:20:35] And it does a very good job of capturing the pulp of the shadow

[00:20:40] and some of the goofier elements without being a straightforward superhero movie.

[00:20:45] Like there's not a lot of super campy moments in it.

[00:20:48] When they do, they stick out, but on the whole it totally works.

[00:20:53] I understand totally why this didn't produce a whole series of shadow films

[00:20:58] because it's got rough edges and it's editing and there's issues and mistakes,

[00:21:02] but I enjoy it. You love what you love.

[00:21:05] And the shadow meant a lot to me when I found that it existed.

[00:21:08] I'm like, oh, cool, a movie based off of a radio show that I enjoy.

[00:21:13] That's pretty neat. That doesn't happen a lot.

[00:21:15] So yeah, number 10 is a shadow.

[00:21:19] Cool. My number 10 film is a dumb one.

[00:21:24] What are we going to do?

[00:21:25] I got an idea.

[00:21:30] Dumb, a person lacking mental power.

[00:21:33] What's your last name? I'll look it up.

[00:21:34] It starts with an S.

[00:21:37] Lappy. No, Swap Swapy.

[00:21:40] Maybe it's on the briefcase.

[00:21:42] Look on the...

[00:21:42] Oh yeah! It's right here.

[00:21:44] Samsonite.

[00:21:45] I was way off.

[00:21:46] Idiot, an adult mentally inferior to a child of three.

[00:21:51] Skis, huh?

[00:21:53] That's right.

[00:21:54] The years?

[00:21:56] Uh-huh.

[00:21:57] Both of them?

[00:21:59] Yeah.

[00:22:00] Cool.

[00:22:03] Stupid, a person below normal intelligence.

[00:22:07] Hey, won't you hear the most annoying sound in the world?

[00:22:12] If they each had half a brain,

[00:22:21] they'd still only have half a brain.

[00:22:26] Oh look, frost.

[00:22:34] Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels.

[00:22:54] Oh, jeez, look at the button.

[00:22:57] Yeah, he must work out.

[00:23:01] Dumb and dumber.

[00:23:04] For these guys, every day is a no-brainer.

[00:23:18] Number 10 for me is Dumb and Dumber.

[00:23:20] Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Fairley.

[00:23:23] That's right.

[00:23:25] It's actually a favorite of mine growing up.

[00:23:27] My dad and I used to watch it all the time.

[00:23:29] One of my favorite jokes they have is at the beginning,

[00:23:31] all the credits are misspelled.

[00:23:34] And it's just...

[00:23:35] I mean, the movie is really stupid,

[00:23:38] but it's really funny.

[00:23:39] Sometimes some of the acting isn't the greatest,

[00:23:41] but Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are amazing in it.

[00:23:46] I showed it to my kid and he thought it was really funny.

[00:23:50] I didn't know there's an extended cut,

[00:23:52] and that's what I showed my kid,

[00:23:53] because it gets way raunchier when they're in the hot tub together.

[00:23:57] And I go, uh!

[00:23:58] But you know,

[00:24:00] not with what they're doing, just their dialogue.

[00:24:03] There's a great delivery in that movie.

[00:24:04] We got no food, we got no job,

[00:24:06] our pets' heads are falling off.

[00:24:08] Well, yeah, even before that.

[00:24:10] I'm always a fan in comedies

[00:24:11] where sometimes lines are delivered really subtly.

[00:24:14] And before that,

[00:24:17] you know, he tells

[00:24:20] Lloyd, he said, yeah,

[00:24:22] Pete, he's dead. His head fell off.

[00:24:24] It was pretty old.

[00:24:25] It's so fucking stupid,

[00:24:28] but it's so awesome.

[00:24:29] And if you don't laugh at those kind of movies,

[00:24:31] I don't know what to say to you.

[00:24:34] Hustrian.

[00:24:35] G'day, mate.

[00:24:35] Put another shrimp on the mub.

[00:24:39] Yeah, and that was before Jim Carrey got really pretentious

[00:24:42] and did Sonic the Hedgehog movies.

[00:24:45] This is also the year where he like,

[00:24:47] kind of basically ruled the box office

[00:24:49] between this and Ace Ventura, yeah.

[00:24:51] Yep.

[00:24:52] Neither of them are on my top ten,

[00:24:54] but Ace Ventura was close.

[00:24:56] And the mask.

[00:24:57] And the mask.

[00:24:58] Yeah, I didn't put Ace Ventura on the list because...

[00:25:00] Isn't Ace Ventura last year though?

[00:25:02] No, 1994.

[00:25:04] 1994, yeah.

[00:25:06] Other things edged it out,

[00:25:07] but Ace Ventura or Dumb and Dumber probably would have made the list,

[00:25:10] but those movies are pretty damn solid.

[00:25:14] Oh, yeah.

[00:25:14] Ace Ventura has some issues.

[00:25:16] It's so just Dumb and Dumber, but...

[00:25:18] Yeah, I mean, I don't care about, you know,

[00:25:20] it is what it is.

[00:25:22] Yeah, before, you know, Jim Carrey said,

[00:25:24] I'm going to do Truman Show and Man on the Moon.

[00:25:27] Man on the Moon is great. You hush your mouth.

[00:25:29] Sure.

[00:25:31] Corinne, number ten.

[00:25:33] So just for the record,

[00:25:35] so you guys know right now,

[00:25:36] most of my movies are childhood favorites.

[00:25:40] I mean, a lot of the movies that I love from 94

[00:25:43] are animated.

[00:25:45] No.

[00:25:46] Wow.

[00:25:47] Any of your other lists?

[00:25:48] Every Entry.

[00:25:49] Musicals and whatnot.

[00:25:50] I want you to branch out.

[00:25:51] I want you to start watching horror films.

[00:25:53] No.

[00:25:53] Yes.

[00:25:54] Absolutely not.

[00:25:55] Why?

[00:25:55] I don't need to.

[00:25:56] I don't want to.

[00:25:57] What about horror comedies?

[00:25:59] What?

[00:25:59] Coward.

[00:26:00] Totally.

[00:26:01] What about animated horror?

[00:26:03] Tell us about the last porcupine,

[00:26:06] whatever number ten is for you.

[00:26:07] Wait, did you just stumble on a great idea?

[00:26:12] The last porcupine.

[00:26:16] Dreamworks.

[00:26:17] We are here and we are ready to write.

[00:26:20] Oh, dude, I could write it.

[00:26:21] So it's his porcupine that's been abandoned by his family.

[00:26:24] And then he meets a lovable but funny bluebird.

[00:26:27] And he has kind of an attitude.

[00:26:29] And he's like, hey porcupine, watch come up over here.

[00:26:32] And the porcupine can't jump.

[00:26:33] And then it's really funny.

[00:26:35] No dude, no one can touch him.

[00:26:37] So he's always alone.

[00:26:40] The bluebird must be pointing my Samuel Jackson, by the way.

[00:26:44] He has to keep his friends and loved ones at a distance.

[00:26:46] Or else he'll hurt them.

[00:26:47] Yeah, because he's prickly.

[00:26:50] He is a prick.

[00:26:53] That's the tagline for the poster.

[00:26:54] He's a prick.

[00:26:55] He's a prick.

[00:26:56] And then at the end you just have some random pop song that everybody dances to.

[00:26:59] He's voiced by Danny DeVito.

[00:27:00] $300 million.

[00:27:02] Hey, I'm the porcupine.

[00:27:05] No, you guys need to get out of my habitat.

[00:27:10] Yes.

[00:27:11] Danny DeVito is the last porcupine.

[00:27:17] Just have a Taylor Swift song in the background with a trailer where the play is going up.

[00:27:23] And then it's gonna shake, shake, shake.

[00:27:25] Oh dude.

[00:27:26] Get out of my habitat.

[00:27:28] $500 million for sure.

[00:27:30] Yep, I mean, Corrine would see it for sure.

[00:27:32] I would.

[00:27:33] Genuinely, I probably would.

[00:27:35] Guys, let's just get ready to run onto that Oscar stage in 2025.

[00:27:39] We still have time to make and animate this movie.

[00:27:42] All right.

[00:27:43] So my number 10 is a movie I grew up watching and it's still in a VHS on the shelf at my mom's house.

[00:27:51] So here it is.

[00:27:52] A new adventure with Aladdin.

[00:28:02] Disney's The Return of Jafar.

[00:28:05] And three!

[00:28:08] Jafar is back and he's out for revenge.

[00:28:11] I'm arranging a little surprise for Aladdin.

[00:28:16] Now, Aladdin will have to use all his tricks to face his biggest challenge ever.

[00:28:20] So join all your favorite characters.

[00:28:22] Aladdin, Jasmine, Iago and the Genie.

[00:28:26] Did you miss me?

[00:28:27] Disney's The Return of Jafar.

[00:28:30] I love it!

[00:28:33] So my number 10 is Aladdin, The Return of Jafar, which was the very first Disney direct to video sequel.

[00:28:40] Fun fact.

[00:28:42] Yeah, I like the third one better, but I still have a little bit of a soft spot for it just because this is the one that started it all.

[00:28:53] And I miss Robin Williams as the Genie and I did like the TV show when it came out.

[00:29:00] So yeah, Aladdin Return of Jafar.

[00:29:04] Aladdin was such a big deal in 92.

[00:29:06] Everywhere.

[00:29:07] Brilliant film.

[00:29:08] It shaped everything.

[00:29:09] Our culture, our economic structure, our politics.

[00:29:13] I love the making of Aladdin where they said Robin Williams would improvise lines

[00:29:18] and he would bring in pop culture references.

[00:29:22] And they said, should we even do that?

[00:29:23] I said, yeah, fuck it. Who cares? We're going to put it in and it worked.

[00:29:26] Yeah.

[00:29:27] And they got the, who's the guy who voices Homer Simpson?

[00:29:31] Dan Castellaneta.

[00:29:32] Yeah.

[00:29:32] So they got him in to play the Genie and I think he's okay.

[00:29:35] Oh, so that's why the Genie says dough.

[00:29:38] That'd be awesome.

[00:29:40] Dough!

[00:29:41] They probably made a Homer Simpson reference at some point between the show and the sequels.

[00:29:47] Yeah, I remember reading the script and it said, come on kids, let's go home for frosty chocolate milkshakes.

[00:29:55] So anyway, what is that?

[00:29:57] I don't even remember the story for Return of Jafar.

[00:30:00] Jafar comes back.

[00:30:02] Yeah, Jafar returns.

[00:30:04] A lot of it is centered on Iago for some reason.

[00:30:07] Don't know why.

[00:30:08] Because Gilbert Gottfried had to be in like every movie this year.

[00:30:12] Damn right.

[00:30:12] He shows up again later on my list.

[00:30:14] Yeah, someone finds the lamp.

[00:30:19] Who's the guy who plays George Costanza in Seinfeld?

[00:30:22] Yeah, guy voiced by him finds the lamp that Jafar is in, releases him and he goes back and takes over Algarba.

[00:30:30] I've never seen Return of Jafar.

[00:30:31] Denominant cosmic power.

[00:30:33] I've never seen Return of Jafar but now I'm just imagining going, Jerry, I found a lamp!

[00:30:37] Jerry!

[00:30:40] Yeah, as I said, I like the third one better.

[00:30:42] But anyway, my number 10 is Aladdin Return of Jafar.

[00:30:45] That's a good pick.

[00:30:47] Brad, number nine?

[00:30:49] My number nine, I always thought was a good movie but I got to watch it again in the theater recently

[00:30:55] and I decided to add this list and it's a, yeah, it's great.

[00:31:17] The new story of a Hollywood legend, Ed Wood.

[00:31:20] And action!

[00:31:21] He made movies like no one else.

[00:31:23] You want to keep moving?

[00:31:24] You've got to get through that door.

[00:31:26] Ah, that was perfect.

[00:31:27] Perfect. Do you know anything about film production?

[00:31:30] Well, I'd like to think so.

[00:31:32] He had an eye for talent.

[00:31:34] I met Bella Legosi.

[00:31:35] I thought he was dead.

[00:31:36] This is the most uncomfortable coffin I've ever seen.

[00:31:39] No, he's very much alive.

[00:31:41] You flying saucer?

[00:31:42] He had a passion for storytelling.

[00:31:44] Get me transvestites. I need transvestites.

[00:31:47] You're flashy. They want that.

[00:31:49] I don't know, okay.

[00:31:50] But they want professionalism, so nicks on the nilly without losing naivete.

[00:31:54] What kind of a movie is this?

[00:31:56] It's science fiction.

[00:31:57] A heartbreaking romance.

[00:31:58] Brave robbers from outer space.

[00:32:00] Brave robbers from what?

[00:32:01] And he had a secret he couldn't hide.

[00:32:04] I like to dress in women's clothing.

[00:32:06] Panties, sweaters, pumps. It's just something I do.

[00:32:08] You don't like sex with girls?

[00:32:10] No, I love sex with girls.

[00:32:12] Wearing their clothes makes me feel closer to them.

[00:32:13] How can you act so casual when you're dressed like that?

[00:32:17] All right, everybody. Let's finish this picture.

[00:32:19] Touchstone Pictures presents Johnny Depp, Martin Landau,

[00:32:24] Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette and Bill Murray

[00:32:28] in the true story...

[00:32:30] Give me a hand.

[00:32:31] Really.

[00:32:32] ...of an unforgettable filmmaker.

[00:32:35] We're making another movie.

[00:32:36] I got the church of Beverly Hills to put up the cash.

[00:32:38] How do you get all your friends to get baptized

[00:32:40] just so you can make amends to the movie?

[00:32:42] And his legacy that will live forever.

[00:32:44] How do you burn this up?

[00:32:46] Shake and pledge for a while. Looks like he's killing me.

[00:32:49] This is the one.

[00:32:50] The one is I command you!

[00:32:53] This is the one I'll be remembering for.

[00:32:55] Ed Wood, a Tim Burton film.

[00:32:57] Really? Where's film you ever saw?

[00:33:00] Well, my next one will be better.

[00:33:03] Hello?

[00:33:09] Oh yeah, my number nine is Ed Wood.

[00:33:11] Fuck you, Bradley!

[00:33:14] I knew it was going to break your heart, but...

[00:33:16] God damn it!

[00:33:18] I don't tell you.

[00:33:18] Bring me my morphine.

[00:33:20] I could have just not had it on the list.

[00:33:22] That's true.

[00:33:23] Yeah, I rewatched it earlier this year at the Esquire,

[00:33:27] and it's almost like more of Bella Lugosi's story.

[00:33:33] Kind of, yeah.

[00:33:35] Just a split.

[00:33:36] Yeah, just a bio pic about Ed Wood

[00:33:37] and him making Plan 9 for Matter Space

[00:33:39] and helping Bella Lugosi with his addiction.

[00:33:44] Not very well.

[00:33:47] Yeah.

[00:33:49] I like that it's done in black and white

[00:33:52] and kind of looks like the style of the movies at the time.

[00:33:56] Yeah.

[00:33:57] Yeah, it's a fun movie.

[00:33:58] I still think Pee Weez is best movie.

[00:34:03] Opinions are like assholes. Everyone's got one.

[00:34:05] Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's fun.

[00:34:06] This is definitely up there.

[00:34:07] Yeah, oh yeah. It's definitely one of his better ones.

[00:34:09] Oh yeah.

[00:34:10] Before he gets all Tim Burton-y.

[00:34:12] Or more Disney.

[00:34:14] I'm an artist.

[00:34:15] After Alice in Wonderland, man.

[00:34:16] Just like sequel and...

[00:34:19] Yeah.

[00:34:20] Big Eyes is the exception.

[00:34:21] Big Eyes is good.

[00:34:22] Yeah, he needs to focus more on his own stuff.

[00:34:26] Hey, our film next week is Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.

[00:34:29] I heard they gave him carte blanche to make that movie.

[00:34:32] Really?

[00:34:32] Yeah, good for them.

[00:34:33] I'm calling it Beetlejuice too.

[00:34:34] I'm calling it Beetlejuice too.

[00:34:35] I'll make that movie.

[00:34:38] Zach, number nine.

[00:34:40] Alright, my number nine is a horror film from the master of horror as many would proclaim to be.

[00:34:47] And this time he decided to take a property that he had done before and give it a new edgy 90s twist.

[00:34:55] Marcus, common mark.

[00:34:57] I've been doing a film about my nightmares as I'm dreaming.

[00:35:00] In order for the movie to continue, it was dependent on me having more nightmares.

[00:35:04] Well, fortunately I did.

[00:35:06] I'm a little frightened by what Wes may have tapped into.

[00:35:09] I frankly felt that it was over when we did the last of the final nightmare.

[00:35:16] In a town where movies go over schedule and directors go over budget,

[00:35:23] something far more evil is out of control.

[00:35:27] Horror film suffered its own terror today as two of Hollywood's best known special effects technicians were found dead.

[00:35:44] Part of the theme of the movie is becoming like part of the making of the movie.

[00:35:57] Oops, I think that only happens in the movies.

[00:36:06] What happens when the story dies, the evil is set free.

[00:36:12] Now that the films have ended, the teenies out of the bottle.

[00:36:19] That's what the nightmares are telling me and that's what I'm writing.

[00:36:22] This is still a script we're talking about, right Wes?

[00:36:24] You need to set up crossover out of films into art reality.

[00:36:28] The only way to stop him is to make another movie.

[00:36:30] Oh my God.

[00:36:32] The bad man's getting off close.

[00:36:35] You're gonna have to make a choice.

[00:36:37] What kind of choice?

[00:36:38] Well, they're not your willing to play Nancy. One last time.

[00:36:52] Bloody who can stop him?

[00:36:54] That person's you.

[00:36:55] Who are you?

[00:36:55] It was you that gave Nancy her strength.

[00:36:58] I'm so sick.

[00:37:00] We're like that.

[00:37:11] Yeah, my number nine is Wes Craven's New Nightmare.

[00:37:16] It is a brilliant film.

[00:37:18] It's scream before scream.

[00:37:19] In fact, I think the only reason Wes is the absolute correct choice to helm something like scream is because he

[00:37:26] evidence that he can handle meta material like New Nightmare from his own brain.

[00:37:31] I, if this were any other year where other entries were not catching my eye, I think this would be way higher.

[00:37:39] But other films above it for other reasons.

[00:37:42] I do adore the film though.

[00:37:47] It's wonderful to watch Heather Lingen camp get a way to reclaim some trauma that she actually experienced as a result of her acting career.

[00:37:58] And to do it in the form of resurrecting Freddie intelligently rather than just continuing to try to follow a mythology and a lineage that was kind of like puttering out by the time they get to Freddie's dead.

[00:38:12] And it gives a great opportunity for the history of New Line to be homage at a similar point to the movie celebrates the studio that gave it birth as well as telling an intriguing nightmare tale that

[00:38:28] I think still holds up in a world where we are inundated with meta jokes strewn about every single major Hollywood film we tend to see.

[00:38:38] This is really one of the early birth points of it, of that movement and Wes Craven very much saw into the future intelligently.

[00:38:47] And it's a it's there's beautifully mastered action sequences in this film that are just so audacious like that highway chase sequence looks fucking ridiculous and I would not.

[00:39:00] I can't imagine how you execute those days.

[00:39:04] And there's something interesting about the history of it with the idea that just as they're starting to film that's when the great Ridge earthquake happens in LA.

[00:39:13] So they literally just use that as part of the story that was already there and use the aftermath of that earthquake in the film.

[00:39:23] Just I think somebody told him on the set after that happening is like what did you do make a deal with the devil to make the film so

[00:39:32] I'm glad that it's found its audience though because it definitely did not do well when it first came out but it's yeah, they did not they didn't sell it properly.

[00:39:41] But hey if there's any way to get one more nightmare out of Wes Craven I'm glad it was this kind of nightmare so yeah number nine new nightmare.

[00:39:50] I'll talk about it later but I guess I'll get back to that at Zach right now.

[00:39:58] Salsa shark we're gonna need a bigger boat.

[00:40:01] Throughout history they have been a part of our American life.

[00:40:05] Men and women who have made it their mission to serve their fellow man.

[00:40:10] They've worked hard enough isn't it time?

[00:40:12] They had their own movie.

[00:40:14] Clerics.

[00:40:15] It's a job would be great if it wasn't for the fucking customers.

[00:40:17] I don't bother them and they don't bother me.

[00:40:19] I can do without the people in the video store.

[00:40:21] Do you have that one with that guy who was in that movie that was out last year?

[00:40:25] You should hear the barrage of stupid questions I guess.

[00:40:28] What do you mean there's noice? You mean I gotta drink this coffee hot?

[00:40:31] You'd feel a hell of a lot better if you just rip into the occasional customer.

[00:40:34] You're a clerk paid to do a job. You can't just do anything you want while you're working.

[00:40:40] Hey, are you open? No!

[00:40:49] Kind of convenient store do you run here?

[00:40:52] Mirror Maxfields presents.

[00:40:54] You think anybody can see us down here?

[00:40:56] Why do you wanna have sex or something?

[00:40:57] Can we?

[00:40:59] Clerics.

[00:41:00] Just because they serve you doesn't mean they like you.

[00:41:04] You hate people but I love gatherings. Isn't it ironic?

[00:41:09] Damn dude, you make that cry.

[00:41:10] I know he's not even here anymore.

[00:41:13] He wouldn't know why I'm gonna explain.

[00:41:15] My number nine film is Clerics which is Kevin Smith's first film.

[00:41:20] Very funny, very...

[00:41:23] He established a voice for himself obviously in this because it's his first film.

[00:41:28] It just...

[00:41:29] And I love the movie and it's not that I don't love the film.

[00:41:33] If you haven't seen Clerics, it's about two guys.

[00:41:35] One works at a convenience store, one works at a video store.

[00:41:38] And it's their shenanigans throughout the day.

[00:41:41] What it did is give a voice to kind of the generation that we're at

[00:41:46] because they talk in movie quotes, they do silly things.

[00:41:52] Talk about raunchy shit.

[00:41:53] Yeah, but I became a fan of his later films.

[00:41:57] I'm not talking about like Tusk or anything.

[00:42:00] I'm talking about like Chasing Amy I think is his best movie.

[00:42:05] And I fell in love with Kevin Smith for Mall Rats which is way more low brow

[00:42:12] but it's still really funny to me.

[00:42:14] But this film just the dialogue is what makes it a great movie.

[00:42:19] And it was an independent film that the story is so great about how he made it

[00:42:26] and putting all his friends in it and how it caught on at film festivals

[00:42:31] and kind of grew organically from there.

[00:42:34] I mean, it spawned two other movies in a cartoon.

[00:42:38] A great cartoon.

[00:42:39] Yeah, underrated one.

[00:42:41] That's Alec Baldwin's best performance.

[00:42:43] Well played Clerics.

[00:42:44] Yeah, you know, just as I was making my list, I like I love this movie

[00:42:51] but I just like Kevin Smith's other movies more.

[00:42:55] And I know that's like not the popular opinion.

[00:42:58] That's totally acceptable though.

[00:43:00] He's made in within that universe.

[00:43:02] He's made six, seven, eight films that any one of them could be somebody's

[00:43:08] favorite movie without question for sure.

[00:43:10] And that's I'm hoping now that he's off weed and is more focused.

[00:43:16] He's going to get back to kind of films like that.

[00:43:20] At the 430 movie coming out later this year.

[00:43:22] Yeah, and you know, like I mean Tusk is fine.

[00:43:27] Yoga Hoses is not.

[00:43:29] And I want him to go back to writing those kind of stories

[00:43:33] and embracing them because I mean, I think Clerks 3 was pretty good.

[00:43:37] So yeah, number nine Clerks.

[00:43:41] Corinne number nine.

[00:43:43] My number nine.

[00:43:45] Maybe it's a little close to home now about a girl who deals with a boys club.

[00:43:51] Throughout history, men have formed secret societies based upon loyalty, fraternity and one unbreakable rule.

[00:44:08] Now one such institution where he is in serious jeopardy.

[00:44:20] The Little Rascals.

[00:44:22] Universal pictures invite you to meet Alphalpha, Spanky,

[00:44:30] Latter-Stication Our Lady of a Woman of 12.

[00:44:40] Buckwheat.

[00:44:40] Quick! What's the number for 911?

[00:44:43] Froggy.

[00:44:44] What's the sign?

[00:44:45] Wrong sign, Porky.

[00:44:48] Stymie.

[00:44:48] If you were my kids, I'd punish you.

[00:44:51] If we were your kids, we could punish ourselves.

[00:44:54] And Peedy.

[00:44:55] These kids have their differences.

[00:45:03] But when love is in the air...

[00:45:05] This is a song about a tragic romance.

[00:45:08] I'm gonna put that boy out of his misery.

[00:45:10] They all have what it takes.

[00:45:13] To be Little Rascals.

[00:45:20] From the director of Wayne's World and the Beverly Hill Billings.

[00:45:30] Little Rascals.

[00:45:33] This is the side of you.

[00:45:39] Playing this summer.

[00:45:43] At a theater near you.

[00:45:46] My number nine is another childhood classic of mine. It's The Little Rascals.

[00:45:50] So cards on the table actually really enjoy that movie.

[00:45:53] I haven't seen it in a very long time.

[00:45:55] It was on somewhere streaming a couple years ago and Kellyn watched it all the time.

[00:46:02] And I just, you know, I just remember...

[00:46:04] The part I always remembered is when Alfalfa's writing a note to Darla

[00:46:10] and then Spanky and Buckwheat lose it

[00:46:13] and they go and see her and they go, it's okay.

[00:46:17] You remember what it said?

[00:46:18] Dear Darla, I hate your stinking guts.

[00:46:21] You make me vomit.

[00:46:23] You are scum between my toes.

[00:46:26] Love, Alfalfa.

[00:46:29] So yeah, so yes, I love this movie. I do.

[00:46:32] Except you know it hasn't aged well because Donald Trump's in it.

[00:46:34] So that's the reason they hate it.

[00:46:36] Yeah, I don't appreciate that cameo.

[00:46:37] But Reba McIntyre is also in it.

[00:46:39] Yes.

[00:46:40] So it balances out.

[00:46:41] And Mel Brooks.

[00:46:42] And Whoopie Goldberg.

[00:46:43] And Whoopie Goldberg.

[00:46:45] Yeah.

[00:46:46] Oh, I do love the one liner that, uh, is it Buckwheat?

[00:46:49] So it's like, if we were your kids, we'd punish ourselves.

[00:46:52] Yeah.

[00:46:53] Yeah, it's a cute movie.

[00:46:54] It's a really cute movie and the bloopers at the end are great.

[00:46:57] It's got a lot of slapstick comedy in it.

[00:46:59] Oh, Hal Roach was two years off of doing a cameo in it.

[00:47:03] Aw, that's sad.

[00:47:05] Oh well.

[00:47:06] Yeah.

[00:47:07] I also did not realize for a long time that this is a remake.

[00:47:10] Yeah.

[00:47:11] Yeah, our gang.

[00:47:13] Like TV show.

[00:47:14] Repackaged as the Little Rascals.

[00:47:16] No, no, it was a series of short subject films that Hal Roach made.

[00:47:20] Yeah.

[00:47:21] For, for a good Chuck, Chuck years.

[00:47:24] Like that was a bread and butter property for him.

[00:47:26] Um, along with Stan Laurel and Hardy and, um, Harold Lloyd and stuff.

[00:47:31] So, but yeah, no, they were all theatrically released and then

[00:47:34] they were repackaged, I believe as the Little Rascals.

[00:47:37] Um, actually, uh, it's there's like, there's a bunch of side

[00:47:42] universe shit that Leonard Maltons, uh, dug into about the real,

[00:47:46] uh, the real spanky because of so many people who were of an age

[00:47:51] like to like, like, like older and older in years would claim to

[00:47:55] be the real spanky.

[00:47:57] Uh, it's really weird if, uh, listen to Gilbert Godfrey's

[00:48:00] first podcast he did with Leonard Malton and he'll tell the story about it.

[00:48:03] It's great.

[00:48:04] So there's this one spanky.

[00:48:07] So my number nine is the Little Rascals.

[00:48:10] By the way, I love that you love Return of Jafar.

[00:48:15] Gilbert Godfrey's showing up on my list again.

[00:48:17] Don't worry.

[00:48:18] Damn right!

[00:48:20] Brad?

[00:48:21] Uh, my number eight is a deep meditation on identity and metaphysics

[00:48:27] and the afterlife.

[00:48:30] Everything in Tammy's life is just great.

[00:48:33] But when you're young and in love, life can get very complicated,

[00:48:37] especially when it involves an insanely jealous creep.

[00:48:41] That's my lady, all right?

[00:48:46] Late night phone calls.

[00:48:48] I want you to come over.

[00:48:49] Yes!

[00:48:51] Sneaking around in your own house.

[00:48:53] Do you lock the door?

[00:48:54] Don't worry.

[00:48:56] Your boyfriend getting dumped in a wild animal park

[00:49:00] and a crazy doctor

[00:49:02] Well, that's it.

[00:49:05] who turns out to be a mad scientist.

[00:49:07] If you're going to make an omelette, you have to break a few eggs, right?

[00:49:10] with an insane invention that only needs a brain.

[00:49:16] But this Tyrannosaurus Rex just wants to be a party animal.

[00:49:27] Even when you tell the truth, nobody believes it anymore.

[00:49:31] It was a dinosaur.

[00:49:33] What?

[00:49:34] It's more than a machine with a brain.

[00:49:35] I'm going to do this machine with feelings.

[00:49:37] We're on the brink of something special.

[00:49:41] We are going to be immortalized.

[00:49:43] Is that really you in there?

[00:49:44] Oh, Micah, what have they done to you?

[00:49:47] Oh, you poor thing.

[00:49:49] You're going crazy.

[00:49:50] Byron, I am not going crazy.

[00:49:51] This is just a little hard to explain.

[00:49:53] That's my dinosaur!

[00:49:55] We found the dinosaur, Sheriff.

[00:49:56] It's in a truck being driven by your back high above by your son.

[00:50:08] Dinosaur.

[00:50:09] Oh, jeez.

[00:50:11] That is my dinosaur that you are threatening.

[00:50:13] I made him and he is mine.

[00:50:14] What are we going to do?

[00:50:16] I will give you an omelette.

[00:50:20] Not if Tammy has anything to say about it.

[00:50:23] Tammy and the T-Rex.

[00:50:29] So, yeah.

[00:50:30] My number eight is Tammy and the T-Rex.

[00:50:32] Or in some releases, Tammy and the T-Rex.

[00:50:35] The movie's insane.

[00:50:37] Yeah.

[00:50:38] The director, Stuart Raffle, his friend had this animatronic T-Rex

[00:50:43] for like a couple of weekends.

[00:50:45] And he was like, hey man, I got this T-Rex.

[00:50:48] Do you think we can make a movie real quick with it?

[00:50:50] And so the church is like, yeah, give me the give me the weekend and

[00:50:56] I'll write a script.

[00:50:57] And so he came up with this story where the Bernie from weekend at

[00:51:00] Bernie's as a mad scientist who creates an animatronic T-Rex,

[00:51:04] not just a regular T-Rex, an animatronic one.

[00:51:08] And then Paul Walker is Denise Richards, his boyfriend who gets

[00:51:13] mauled by a lion in a forest preserve.

[00:51:16] And then he gets his brain taken out and put in the T-Rex.

[00:51:21] And then, you know, her boyfriend as a T-Rex tries to like get revenge

[00:51:27] and eats a bunch of people in town and tries to like hook up

[00:51:33] with Tammy as a T-Rex.

[00:51:36] That's a fucking movie.

[00:51:37] Yeah, this movie's nuts and amazing.

[00:51:39] I don't want to spoil it, but the final scene in this

[00:51:42] movie like sent me to the floor laughing.

[00:51:45] My favorite parts where he goes to his own funeral and they have

[00:51:47] the T-Rex like crying.

[00:51:52] Yeah, and then the the schoolyard fight between the two dudes

[00:51:57] where like they don't punch each other.

[00:51:58] They just like grab each other's dicks really hard.

[00:52:00] Yeah, like a long time until we get one lack we S's.

[00:52:02] It's really bizarre.

[00:52:04] Yeah.

[00:52:05] Yeah, it's movies nuts.

[00:52:07] Yeah, but it's almost it's not a good movie, but it's so

[00:52:11] insane.

[00:52:12] It's so much fun.

[00:52:13] That's memorable.

[00:52:13] Yeah, you can't believe you're watching it because it's so

[00:52:17] stupid.

[00:52:17] It's like the room.

[00:52:18] It's fun to go.

[00:52:20] It's fun to riff on or the to goof around with and depending

[00:52:24] on what cut you get, it's like incredibly violent.

[00:52:26] There's tons of gore.

[00:52:27] There's like a core cut of it.

[00:52:29] Yeah, which is by far the better cut.

[00:52:31] Yeah.

[00:52:32] So I need to see in trails come out of people.

[00:52:35] You have a dinosaur right there.

[00:52:36] Why aren't you showing?

[00:52:39] So yeah, my number eight is Tammy and the T-Rex.

[00:52:42] Thanks, Zach.

[00:52:43] All right.

[00:52:44] My number eight is definitely another spoiler, but damn, it's

[00:52:51] it's a good movie and a sea of other great movies, but it's

[00:52:55] my favorite James Cameron movie and here it is.

[00:53:00] How to go at the convention, honey.

[00:53:02] You were the picket of the show.

[00:53:04] It's fantastic.

[00:53:05] It's our love computer business.

[00:53:07] For 15 years, Harry Tasker has been leading a double

[00:53:11] life.

[00:53:12] Mr. President, one of our best men is inside transmitting now

[00:53:16] right on time.

[00:53:18] I don't believe I've met you before.

[00:53:20] Request.

[00:53:21] Here at Request.

[00:53:23] Listen to the following code word.

[00:53:25] Helen H-E-L-E-N.

[00:53:28] Now they're about to collide.

[00:53:31] What's your exit strategy?

[00:53:32] I'm going to walk right out of the front gate.

[00:53:34] May I see your invitation please?

[00:53:36] Sure.

[00:53:37] Here's my invitation.

[00:53:40] That worked good.

[00:53:42] Right out of the front gate.

[00:53:44] Can you lean back a second?

[00:53:47] Mr. Tasker's office.

[00:53:48] Hi, it's Helen.

[00:53:49] Is he in?

[00:53:51] How is any sales meeting Mrs. Tasker?

[00:53:54] It's not like he's saving the world or anything.

[00:53:58] I see this is the problem with terrorists.

[00:54:01] They're really inconsiderate when it comes to people's

[00:54:03] sketches.

[00:54:05] Can you press the button for the top four please?

[00:54:08] Hi Helen.

[00:54:09] Harry forgot something back at the office.

[00:54:12] Whenever I can't sleep, I just ask him to tell me about his day.

[00:54:15] Six seconds and I'm out.

[00:54:19] Maybe it's just that you're not in touch with your feminist side.

[00:54:22] Harry.

[00:54:23] Oh, God.

[00:54:24] Oh, God!

[00:54:26] What were you doing here?

[00:54:27] I wouldn't believe what I told you.

[00:54:29] Do you know what this is?

[00:54:30] It's a snow cone maker.

[00:54:39] From James Cameron, director of Aliens and T2.

[00:54:46] Arnold Schwarzenegger.

[00:54:47] This is Soviet Murph 6 from an SS-22 hand launch vehicle.

[00:54:53] I married Rambo.

[00:54:54] Jamie Lee Curtis.

[00:54:56] Have you ever killed anyone?

[00:54:58] Yeah, but they were all bad.

[00:55:00] What can I say?

[00:55:05] I'm a spy.

[00:55:10] So yeah, my number eight is true lies.

[00:55:14] It's way too low, but Brad doesn't even like it very much.

[00:55:17] So, I mean, I guess it could be worse.

[00:55:19] Yeah.

[00:55:20] Not top 10 material, sorry.

[00:55:22] Son of a bitch.

[00:55:24] No, everybody can lie.

[00:55:26] Give us some truth serum to see if he's even telling the truth.

[00:55:28] That really is a true lie.

[00:55:30] Yeah, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a guy who's just as boring computer salesman except no, he's a spy.

[00:55:40] And his wife finds out about it because she's trying to lead her own little life of double intrigue

[00:55:47] and chaos collides when they themselves collide and their true selves are revealed to each other.

[00:55:54] It's beautiful.

[00:55:57] The interaction between Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger is not a pairing that I,

[00:56:03] because I didn't see this movie till college and I didn't think that pairing would work.

[00:56:08] And I was so fucking wrong.

[00:56:10] They worked beautifully off each other.

[00:56:11] They absolutely nailed out of the park.

[00:56:14] And I love that Cameron stuck a lot of either older established actors or character actors around them like Tom Arnold and Grant Heslover running around this movie, Chuck Heston's in this movie.

[00:56:26] There's just so much fun shit going on all across the board.

[00:56:30] And I, in a way, I really wish Cameron would make another movie like this.

[00:56:37] Not to say that I don't enjoy Avatar movies, but I really like these kind of movies out of him a little bit more.

[00:56:44] He does really good with street level action and just the basics.

[00:56:49] And I, it's almost like I'd love him to try to take a minute from Avatar.

[00:56:53] Go make a movie kind of like this and then go back to Avatar.

[00:56:56] Do what you want to do bud.

[00:56:57] A palette cleanser.

[00:56:58] Yeah, a palette cleanser would be nice.

[00:57:01] But I am thankful that at last this is available for people to discover now or rediscover on 4K and Blu-ray because there was a long ass time where it wasn't really available except for Prime Rental and if it was on stars or cinemax or whatever streaming channel had it.

[00:57:17] And it is on Hulu and Disney Plus now.

[00:57:19] Okay, then there you go.

[00:57:20] Even all the more reason you have no fucking excuses anymore ladies and gentlemen.

[00:57:24] Yeah, I've actually still never seen the movie that it's based on the French film.

[00:57:29] Yeah, because it's French fuck them.

[00:57:32] Ouch.

[00:57:33] Tell us how you really feel right.

[00:57:34] Well there goes all our French listeners.

[00:57:35] All four of you.

[00:57:38] But yeah, no, if anybody has never seen this film and only thinks Jim Cameron is responsible for movies about hearts that will go on or aliens or ghosts of an abyss.

[00:57:52] You've got to check this movie out.

[00:57:54] It's fantastic.

[00:57:55] If any, I think in a way isn't this his more this is most normal movie that doesn't deal with anything sci-fi?

[00:58:03] I think so.

[00:58:04] Titanic.

[00:58:06] I mean, actually when I rewatched Titanic last year it's a lot better than I remembered it.

[00:58:11] I love Titanic.

[00:58:12] I don't know if I love it but it's definitely a good movie.

[00:58:15] I've grown to love that movie over time to the point where I have no real ill will toward it at all.

[00:58:19] Like I've never, I do think it deserved the Oscar that it won.

[00:58:23] I just like Jackie Brown from that year more as a film fan.

[00:58:27] I mean, yeah, I mean because a guy fell and hit the propeller that's the best part.

[00:58:31] Special effects really hold up in that movie.

[00:58:33] Excuse me guys.

[00:58:35] The real hero of the movie is Gloria Stewart star of the Invisible Man getting an Oscar nomination after how many fucking years?

[00:58:44] But yeah, true lies.

[00:58:46] Check it out.

[00:58:47] You have no reason not to.

[00:58:49] Number eight for me is the Feel Good Movie of the Year.

[00:58:51] In fact, it won a lot of Academy Awards.

[00:59:18] She was my most special friend.

[00:59:21] My only friend.

[00:59:23] We was together all the time.

[00:59:25] We was like peas and carrots, Jenny and I.

[00:59:27] Run for it!

[00:59:28] Hey stupid!

[00:59:30] Now you wouldn't believe it if I told you but I could run like the wind blows.

[00:59:34] Who in the hell is that?

[00:59:36] That there's false gump, coach.

[00:59:38] Just a local idiot.

[00:59:40] I never thought it would take me anywhere.

[00:59:45] Baby put me on a thing called the All America team.

[00:59:51] Where you get to meet the President of the United States.

[00:59:56] Congratulations.

[00:59:56] How does it feel to be an All American?

[00:59:58] I gotta pee.

[01:00:00] I believe he said he had to go pee.

[01:00:02] Now maybe it's just me but college was very confusing times.

[01:00:09] Have you ever been with a girl, Forrest?

[01:00:10] I sit next to them in my home economics class all the time.

[01:00:14] Have you given any thought to your future?

[01:00:16] Girl!

[01:00:17] What's your sole purpose in this army?

[01:00:20] To do whatever you tell me, Drill Sergeant.

[01:00:23] You're damn genius.

[01:00:24] You are going to be a general someday, ghost.

[01:00:26] Yes, Drill Sergeant!

[01:00:28] They sent me to Vietnam.

[01:00:30] Can you promise me something, okay?

[01:00:32] If you ever in trouble don't try to be brave.

[01:00:34] You just run, okay?

[01:00:36] Okay.

[01:00:36] Where you boys from in the world?

[01:00:38] Alabama, sir.

[01:00:40] You twins?

[01:00:42] No, we are not relations.

[01:00:45] For some reason when I was doing seemed to make sense to people.

[01:00:49] Forget about me, get yourself out!

[01:00:51] I've been awarded the Medal of Honor.

[01:00:54] How come?

[01:00:55] Now my momma's always telling me how miracles happen every day.

[01:00:59] Some people don't think so.

[01:01:01] But they do.

[01:01:04] You can come home with me in my house in Greenbow.

[01:01:07] I'll take care of you.

[01:01:10] Why are you so good to me?

[01:01:11] You're my girl.

[01:01:13] Paramount Pictures presents...

[01:01:17] Tom Hanks.

[01:01:18] I'm not a smart man, but I know what love is.

[01:01:23] Robin Wright.

[01:01:24] Will you marry me?

[01:01:25] I'd make a good husband, Jenny.

[01:01:29] You would, Forrest.

[01:01:32] But you won't marry me.

[01:01:34] Gary Sinise.

[01:01:35] I never thanked you for saving my life.

[01:01:39] And Sally Field.

[01:01:40] My boy Forrest is going to get the same opportunities as everyone else.

[01:01:45] A film by Robert Zemeckis.

[01:01:47] What's my death, city mom?

[01:01:49] You're gonna have to figure that out for yourself.

[01:02:17] Never seem the same once you've seen it through the eyes of Forrest Gump.

[01:02:23] My momma always said life was like a box of chocolates.

[01:02:28] You never know what you're gonna get.

[01:02:35] Ah, number eight for me is Forrest Gump.

[01:02:37] I know lately it's cool to trash this movie, but I still think it's a fun movie.

[01:02:43] And it's a feel-good movie.

[01:02:45] Tom Hanks is incredible in it.

[01:02:48] And yeah, it's just...

[01:02:50] You know, what are you laughing about?

[01:02:52] I was thinking of Tropic Thunder.

[01:02:54] Oh.

[01:02:58] Well, Tom Hanks does not go full retard in this.

[01:03:02] He's Forrest Gump.

[01:03:03] Slow? Sure. Retarded? No.

[01:03:10] Yeah, but Forrest Gump is a fun movie.

[01:03:14] I rewatched it recently and yeah, I just had fun watching it.

[01:03:19] I like it.

[01:03:21] Yeah, and I don't think I've explained what Forrest Gump is, right?

[01:03:24] Everybody knows what Forrest Gump is.

[01:03:25] The movie's 30 years old.

[01:03:26] If they haven't seen it by now, they're not gonna...

[01:03:28] It's about a guy who really loves chocolate.

[01:03:30] He sure does.

[01:03:31] And then he opens up a factory that's made of chocolate.

[01:03:34] Am I remembering the movie correctly?

[01:03:35] He basically just runs through history.

[01:03:38] It's about a guy who created a restaurant that finds itself

[01:03:42] popping up in random places called Bubba Gum Shrimp.

[01:03:44] Yeah, they're still around.

[01:03:46] Kellen went to one a couple weeks ago.

[01:03:48] There's still one in Denver.

[01:03:49] There is?

[01:03:49] Yeah, downtown Denver, right?

[01:03:50] Okay, interesting.

[01:03:52] Like right there on the 16th Street Mall.

[01:03:54] Actually what it really is about is about finding out

[01:03:57] the origin story of how Tom Hanks

[01:03:59] ended up eventually being in the Elvis movie.

[01:04:01] That's what it really is about.

[01:04:04] Corinne, number eight.

[01:04:05] My number eight is another childhood classic.

[01:04:10] I love love stories, don't you?

[01:04:13] Once upon a time

[01:04:14] In a land far, far away

[01:04:17] I'm the leaner

[01:04:20] She's a funny little story

[01:04:21] A very small girl

[01:04:23] No bigger than a thumb

[01:04:24] I wish I were fake

[01:04:26] Don't ever wish to be anything with what you are

[01:04:29] At an impossible dream

[01:04:31] I'm finding her one true love

[01:04:35] Hopefully ever after

[01:04:39] But before her fairy prince could claim her heart

[01:04:42] She's getting married to fairy prince

[01:04:44] Well, perhaps

[01:04:46] She was stolen from her home

[01:04:50] Somebody in the sky

[01:04:51] Who did it?

[01:04:52] A toad

[01:04:54] And lost to a very big world

[01:04:58] I'll find her

[01:05:01] You are going to marry my son?

[01:05:04] Oh, no, no

[01:05:05] Somebody here that she loves the fairy prince, right?

[01:05:11] You're gonna marry the fairy prince?

[01:05:17] Yes

[01:05:18] Well then follow your heart

[01:05:21] It will lead you home

[01:05:23] Your shadow to impossible

[01:05:26] From the enchanting pages of

[01:05:29] Hans Christian Andersen's storybook classic

[01:05:31] And the imagination of Don Blu-Reed, director of an American tale

[01:05:37] Comes a magical ride

[01:05:39] In a world brought to life by the music of Barry Matlow

[01:05:43] Oh, Thumbelina

[01:05:49] I love French performances

[01:05:52] Thumbelina

[01:05:53] Nothing is impossible if you follow your heart

[01:05:56] I love this story

[01:06:04] So my number eight is Thumbelina, a Don Blu film

[01:06:08] I mean, I don't care

[01:06:13] I liked it as a kid

[01:06:15] I still have a soft spot for it

[01:06:16] Did you tell him that at the convention this year?

[01:06:21] Just walked by his table

[01:06:23] Thumbelina sucks

[01:06:24] Love your work, except for Thumbelina

[01:06:26] Not a good one

[01:06:27] Suck it

[01:06:29] I mean, I'd say my favorite of his is probably Land Before Time

[01:06:33] Followed by Anastasia

[01:06:35] This might be number three though

[01:06:36] Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep

[01:06:38] I watched this way more than I watched like Fival or

[01:06:41] Yeah, American Goat

[01:06:43] American Tell is way better

[01:06:46] Oh

[01:06:46] He just needed help with Steven Spielberg

[01:06:48] That's another popular one of his

[01:06:49] Guys, it's Rockadoodle because Phil Harris isn't a

[01:06:53] Duh

[01:06:53] It does feel very Disney versus a lot of his other films

[01:06:57] But I don't care, you know it's got Jodie Benson

[01:06:59] Who's the voice of Ariel

[01:07:00] It's got Gilbert Gottfried

[01:07:01] Who's the voice of the Yago

[01:07:04] I remember being in that movie

[01:07:06] And it's Hans Christian Anderson

[01:07:11] You can't turn a sluice Korean on these kind of movies

[01:07:13] You don't mention Gilbert Gottfried's name

[01:07:16] And it will happen

[01:07:19] Part for the course

[01:07:20] But I mean it looks like a pretty interesting animated film

[01:07:24] It's a Hans Christian Anderson adaptation

[01:07:26] So Thumbelina is a Hans Christian Anderson story

[01:07:31] And it actually follows the story very closely

[01:07:33] Of you know Thumbelina is this girl who's the size of a thumb

[01:07:37] And she falls in love with the fairy prince

[01:07:38] But before they can get married

[01:07:41] She gets kidnapped and then just subsequently gets

[01:07:44] Kind of lost in the forest

[01:07:46] And gets hit on by all these creepy creatures

[01:07:48] Literally hit on

[01:07:50] And she gets kidnapped by the frogs

[01:07:53] Or toads

[01:07:54] Then she gets accosted by the needles

[01:07:57] What?

[01:08:01] Nothing

[01:08:02] Go here

[01:08:02] Here's a question for you

[01:08:05] In Hans Christian Anderson's

[01:08:10] In the original story

[01:08:11] Did Hans Christian Anderson specify that Gilbert Gottfried must participate in this project

[01:08:17] I would imagine not

[01:08:18] That would be great to find that out

[01:08:20] In an unused draft of this story

[01:08:23] Going like

[01:08:23] And please cast Gilbert Gottfried

[01:08:27] So she does have this swallow friend

[01:08:30] Called Jackie Mo

[01:08:31] And I don't know what it is about Don Bluth movies

[01:08:34] But I don't think he does sidekicks very well

[01:08:37] Because this one and the one from Secret of Nim

[01:08:39] Both get on my nerves a lot

[01:08:42] I can't think of the one from Secret of Nim

[01:08:44] But that guy

[01:08:45] I think it's another bird isn't it?

[01:08:49] I haven't seen the Secret of Nim for 37 years

[01:08:52] When did it come out?

[01:08:53] I don't know the 80s

[01:08:54] I remember the Secret of Nim until I remember the VHS cover

[01:08:59] I watched it a couple years ago

[01:09:01] But anyway, Jackie Mo could have literally flown her home at any time

[01:09:04] But no, he's just running around singing a very annoying song

[01:09:08] But anyway, I like Thumbelina

[01:09:11] I'll fight people about it

[01:09:13] I liked learning today that Barry Manilow did

[01:09:15] What Elton John did this very same year

[01:09:18] Which is compose an original song and score for an animated film

[01:09:23] Yep

[01:09:24] Interesting

[01:09:25] I don't think the songs are that good either

[01:09:28] There's like one or two that are good and the rest are unforgettable

[01:09:31] Well now you've just made Barry Manilow cry

[01:09:33] Yeah, go ahead and cry Barry Manilow

[01:09:36] Don't care

[01:09:37] You're shit together

[01:09:38] My number eight, Thumbelina

[01:09:41] Hey listen to our new theme song performed by the one and only

[01:09:44] Barry Manilow

[01:09:45] Nope, you can't have it now because Corinne made me cry

[01:09:48] I could even riff on a Barry Manilow song

[01:09:51] I know Coco Cabana and Mandy

[01:09:53] Is it Mandy's right?

[01:09:55] Something

[01:09:55] I just remember Coco Cabana

[01:09:58] If we're gonna get some A-list celebrity to do a theme song for us

[01:10:02] You know it's not gonna be Barry Manilow, right?

[01:10:04] It's gonna be Rod Stewart

[01:10:05] Yeah, it's gonna be Rod Stewart

[01:10:08] Well that's you tonight

[01:10:09] Wait, I did get a call from Alice Cooper saying that he would like to tell us to go fuck ourselves

[01:10:15] Yeah

[01:10:16] If we actually got a hate mail from Alice Cooper that said to go fuck ourselves

[01:10:21] I would open every show with that

[01:10:22] I'd frame that and put it on a wall

[01:10:24] I'd make a sound wave art of it

[01:10:26] Yes, exactly, yes

[01:10:27] Have it playing on your tombstone

[01:10:29] Fuckin' A

[01:10:30] Brad, number seven

[01:10:32] My number seven is another mediocre animated masterpiece about royalty

[01:10:44] Yeah my number seven is The Lion King

[01:11:50] I'm gonna throw you off the scent of what I was doing

[01:11:53] Fun fact, because Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick are in it

[01:11:56] It's really a prequel to the producers

[01:12:00] What?

[01:12:04] Go ahead and tell us what's only the seventh favorite film of yours Brad

[01:12:07] Because there's six better ones

[01:12:11] Yeah, I don't know

[01:12:12] I liked it, I didn't love it as much as everyone else

[01:12:15] I heard that frigging, can you feel the love tonight

[01:12:17] Like every morning before the drive to school because my mom

[01:12:20] Listened to Cozy 101 all the time

[01:12:22] Cozy 101

[01:12:24] What a way to go to school

[01:12:26] What was the name of Denise?

[01:12:29] Delilah

[01:12:30] Hi, this is Delilah with Cozy 101

[01:12:32] And we're gonna play that chart topping hit

[01:12:35] Can you feel the love tonight

[01:12:36] And Brad's like

[01:12:42] Just crying softly into his backpack

[01:12:44] I used to listen to Cozy all the time

[01:12:45] Is that still the jingle?

[01:12:48] Cozy 101

[01:12:50] It's a variation of that I think

[01:12:51] Yeah, I haven't listened to it since

[01:12:54] Radio is still a thing, I don't know

[01:12:55] Radio is still a thing, yeah

[01:12:57] Alright, good

[01:12:58] For now, stay tuned

[01:13:01] But yeah, it's a good movie, it's Hamlet

[01:13:04] So there's that

[01:13:08] The animation is beautiful

[01:13:11] Probably peak Disney Renaissance right there

[01:13:13] We need a new trailer with the quote

[01:13:15] It's Hamlet, Brad Hick, real good fuck

[01:13:18] Which fun fact this was their B team

[01:13:20] Because their A team was working on Pocahontas

[01:13:23] Cause Jeffery Cazimbers is an idiot

[01:13:24] All their main animators wanted to go work on Pocahontas

[01:13:27] Cause they wanted to get an Oscar

[01:13:28] And so, you know, this was the B team

[01:13:31] They were relegated to working on The Lion King

[01:13:33] And they went Pocahontas came out and go

[01:13:34] Oh, that's a D movie

[01:13:37] Yeah, compared to The Lion King it is

[01:13:39] Don't speak ill of the colors of the wind dude

[01:13:42] Does Pocahontas have Nathan Lane and Ernie Cibella?

[01:13:46] Fucking no

[01:13:48] So yeah, my number seven, The Lion King

[01:13:50] I feel like other people are going to talk way more about it later

[01:13:52] We are

[01:13:55] Brad, Zach, sorry

[01:13:57] Alright, so there is some slight context to this number seven

[01:14:03] Robert Redford has stolen many opportunities

[01:14:07] For Martin Scorsese 12

[01:14:09] Of one of his Oscars

[01:14:10] And my heart

[01:14:13] But he had the intelligence to put Martin Scorsese in an acting role in my number seven

[01:14:20] And here it is

[01:14:21] Stand by, going to air

[01:14:22] Stand by music, stand by now

[01:14:25] Three, two, one

[01:14:27] And speed up

[01:14:29] Geritol presents the exciting quiz program 21

[01:14:35] Give me the name of the explorer who discovered Mozambique

[01:14:39] Vasco de Gama

[01:14:40] Correct for ten points

[01:14:44] This temple isn't underdog

[01:14:46] No people root for that

[01:14:47] Have you seen the ratings?

[01:14:50] I'd like you to meet next week's challenger Charles Van Doren

[01:14:52] How much they pay instructors up at Columbia?

[01:14:55] $86 a week

[01:14:56] Do you have any idea how much bozo the clown makes?

[01:14:59] Gotta be James J. Braddock

[01:15:01] Correct, you have 21

[01:15:02] Is this guy a natural or what?

[01:15:04] He's a natural

[01:15:05] $20,000

[01:15:08] What if we would ask you questions that you know?

[01:15:11] Well I think I'd really rather try to beat him honestly

[01:15:14] Just an idea

[01:15:16] Was that part of the test?

[01:15:20] Yes, I know his name, Halleck

[01:15:22] General H.W. Halleck

[01:15:23] You have 21

[01:15:24] I'm constantly amazed at the fact these guys have a different tips

[01:15:28] It's been nine weeks now

[01:15:30] And you've won how much?

[01:15:31] $93,000

[01:15:34] Sir, I smell something

[01:15:36] That little rocks in your living room is plugged into something crooked

[01:15:40] You lose when I tell you to lose

[01:15:45] Now I'm supposed to take a dive

[01:15:47] You know you got these crack pots coming out of the woodwork

[01:15:49] You don't have a shred of concrete evidence

[01:15:52] Young man

[01:15:53] I am the president of the national broadcasting company

[01:15:56] I have you

[01:15:57] And why are you the one that's sweating?

[01:15:59] Another mouth voice

[01:16:00] Charles Van Doren

[01:16:01] Hales from one of the most prominent intellectual families in this country

[01:16:06] Dickson, a witch hunt

[01:16:07] He thinks 21 is right

[01:16:09] Is it?

[01:16:18] You should see the letters I get

[01:16:19] Kids are excited about learning

[01:16:23] You set a real example for all us boys to look up to

[01:16:28] Just sign this statement

[01:16:30] Sign this statement

[01:16:30] Who cares if it's true, huh?

[01:16:34] Dick

[01:16:35] Man

[01:16:38] If someone offered you all this money, would you do it?

[01:16:42] No

[01:16:42] Professor, I'm sorry, I'm going to have to ask for your answer

[01:16:51] Um, so yeah, my number seven is Quiz Show

[01:16:55] It's the, based on the true story of the scandal surrounding the Quiz Show 21

[01:17:01] In which Charles Van Doren was instrumental in basically like the whole caper being discovered that a lot of these game shows were being rigged for ratings

[01:17:11] Thus people who were on a high and on a roll would lose if the audience lost favor in them

[01:17:18] The, one of the beautiful things about this film outside of my joke at the beginning about Scorsese being in it

[01:17:24] And we were talking about it with the trailer

[01:17:28] This movie is kind of in a weird way a ticking clock thriller of sorts

[01:17:33] To try to uncover what's going on with this Quiz Show

[01:17:36] And like, will the authorities figure out what's going on?

[01:17:39] But it's also like a nuanced character study about the different people that interacted with this show

[01:17:44] Like John Tutorot's character is upset because he's basically being ousted from it even though he's very popular

[01:17:52] Um, and the Van Doren character that Ray Fiennes plays

[01:17:56] Um, his going along with the scheme in a weird way is pitched to him by the TV executives as this will promote education

[01:18:06] And help you, help the kids of America

[01:18:08] And so he gets kind of swooped in by this fallacy that the network executives shoved down his throat

[01:18:15] So it's a very interesting look at the rigging of a television show

[01:18:20] But also how television operated in the early days of its existence

[01:18:26] And the ruthless cutthroat attitude that would exist whether it's an ad executive or the network

[01:18:32] And how much they dominated this medium to an alarming degree without any, you know, barrier or regulation

[01:18:41] I think it's one of Redford's finest outings as a filmmaker

[01:18:45] It's so incredibly watchable, intriguing with great performances

[01:18:51] I really wish Kino would get this and put it on Blu-ray

[01:18:54] I was shocked to find out that they haven't done it yet

[01:18:57] And that's very, very sad given how the all the other Hollywood pictures studio films they've put out thus far

[01:19:05] So here's hoping that's on the way

[01:19:09] Maybe when Robert Redford dies and they'll do it

[01:19:12] So now y'all know

[01:19:14] Hell Hydra, fuck

[01:19:15] So God, now you know what you must do

[01:19:18] I want Robert Redford to keep on

[01:19:21] He said his 90s, isn't he?

[01:19:26] He's getting ready to start an old man in the gun too, I think that's what...

[01:19:31] My number seven is a really good movie

[01:19:35] But because it's so...

[01:19:38] It's like the Big Lebowski for me from 1994

[01:19:41] But it is a good movie

[01:19:56] Engines and furious anger

[01:19:58] Those who attempt to poison and destroy my brother

[01:20:05] You know what they call a quarter pound of cheese and Paris?

[01:20:12] What do they call it?

[01:20:13] Royale with cheese

[01:20:14] You got a corpse in the car minus a head in the garage

[01:20:21] Take me to it

[01:20:23] Who said?

[01:20:27] He said it's dead baby

[01:20:28] Dead's dead

[01:20:31] I love you honey bunny

[01:20:33] Everybody be cool this is a rubbery

[01:20:36] What's Fonzie like?

[01:20:38] Correct the Mundo

[01:20:39] And that's what we're gonna be

[01:20:41] We're gonna be cool

[01:20:42] Number seven for me is Pulp Fiction

[01:21:05] Which is a really good movie

[01:21:09] And it's...

[01:21:10] I mean the dialogue in it, it's funny

[01:21:11] It's told in a unique way

[01:21:13] I just realized something

[01:21:15] Crime centered film

[01:21:18] Number seven

[01:21:19] Is this long delayed revenge for the nice guys Ryan?

[01:21:24] Oh maybe

[01:21:26] No you know it has a big Lebowski effect on me

[01:21:29] Where it is a really good movie

[01:21:32] But it's so overplayed now

[01:21:36] Not overplayed

[01:21:37] Overlapped

[01:21:38] Overappreciated

[01:21:39] Yeah because again like the Big Lebowski is a good movie too

[01:21:44] But the varnish has worn off a little bit on it for me

[01:21:47] Because now it's

[01:21:49] When I just like Pulp Fiction

[01:21:51] When I first saw Pulp Fiction I was like

[01:21:52] Awesome movie is great

[01:21:53] And then it seems like everybody caught up to you

[01:21:56] About how great the movie was

[01:21:57] And now it's just everywhere

[01:22:00] And again it doesn't take away for how great the film is

[01:22:05] It just the varnish is kind of

[01:22:06] Not as polished to me

[01:22:10] Because

[01:22:11] When I started going

[01:22:14] Getting older it was in everybody

[01:22:16] The movie poster was in everybody's room in college

[01:22:19] You know the dance scene with John Travolta is everywhere

[01:22:22] In Uma Thurman and

[01:22:25] And then the little things get looked over

[01:22:28] You know Samuel Jackson is incredible in the film

[01:22:32] It's reached the point where they did at one point

[01:22:34] Bring back Fruit Brute

[01:22:36] A cereal that Eric Stoltz is just eating in the movie

[01:22:39] Yeah so

[01:22:41] Yeah I had fun with it

[01:22:43] It's still a really fun movie

[01:22:46] But yeah it's good

[01:22:48] And that's I think because

[01:22:50] It was one of the movies I struggled with the most placing it

[01:22:52] Because I knew it was going to be in my top 10

[01:22:55] And I really like it

[01:22:57] But I didn't know where it was going to end up

[01:22:59] It comes later in my list

[01:23:00] But we'll talk about why I agree with you

[01:23:02] Because I totally understand where you're coming from

[01:23:05] But it's hard because I don't want people not to see it if they haven't seen it

[01:23:08] Because they really should see this film

[01:23:09] Because it's awesome

[01:23:11] And like I said it's told in a really unique way

[01:23:13] It definitely has a Tarantino style to it

[01:23:16] You should definitely see the film

[01:23:19] With those caveats

[01:23:22] Corinne you're number 7

[01:23:23] And Phil Lamar is in it

[01:23:24] You're gonna not watch live action Phil Lamar

[01:23:27] He's giving you so much beautiful stuff in animation

[01:23:30] Did I ever tell you that Phil Lamar booed me?

[01:23:32] Oh well

[01:23:33] It's a true story

[01:23:34] So I was doing a Comic Con panel with him

[01:23:37] And he was late

[01:23:39] And so the people that were running the panel

[01:23:41] Or said dude go up there and do something

[01:23:43] And I said I'm not a vaudeville act

[01:23:45] What do you want me to do?

[01:23:46] And so I went up there

[01:23:48] And I said hey guys

[01:23:50] Mr. Lamar is being tied up

[01:23:51] He's on his way down

[01:23:52] But I thought I'd come out and tell you a joke real fast

[01:23:55] I'm Ryan from Real Nerds and here's a joke

[01:23:57] And people were like already kind of booing

[01:23:59] And I said hey

[01:24:01] And I know I look like Chris Farley

[01:24:02] So I'm gonna do a great impression

[01:24:04] And I hope you're ready

[01:24:05] And then I just crossed my arms like I was in a coffin

[01:24:08] And Phil Lamar walked in

[01:24:13] And I was like this Hermes would have been better

[01:24:14] But you know

[01:24:15] That's a great entrance

[01:24:16] And he's a wonderful man

[01:24:19] When we broke away

[01:24:21] He gave me a hug and said I was really funny

[01:24:23] So Phil Lamar says it's validation

[01:24:27] RIP Marvin

[01:24:31] My number seven is a holiday family favorite

[01:24:37] Dad

[01:24:37] I heard a clatter

[01:24:40] Somebody's on the roof

[01:24:41] Maybe it's Santa

[01:24:43] Not now, Charlie

[01:24:44] This Christmas Scott Calvin's getting into the spirit

[01:24:47] The only way he can

[01:24:49] Hey you!

[01:24:56] By accident

[01:24:58] Something should happen to me

[01:24:59] Put on my suit, the reindeer will know what to do

[01:25:01] It is Santa

[01:25:04] Did not

[01:25:07] When you put on the suit

[01:25:14] You fell subject to the Santa Claus

[01:25:16] The Santa Claus

[01:25:17] What does that mean?

[01:25:18] It means you put on the suit

[01:25:19] You're the big guy

[01:25:22] Santa?

[01:25:23] How can your clothes are so big?

[01:25:25] Do you want this doll or not?

[01:25:26] Go back to sleep

[01:25:28] I shave in the morning and in the afternoon

[01:25:29] I look like this

[01:25:30] Oh my God

[01:25:32] Calvin, you're weight

[01:25:33] What happened?

[01:25:36] Beastie

[01:25:37] What? You put on a little weight

[01:25:39] Does this look like a little weight to you?

[01:25:41] You look distressed

[01:25:43] I'm way past distressed

[01:25:45] I'm talking to an elf

[01:25:47] He's not Santa

[01:25:48] Oh my God

[01:25:50] He is put on

[01:25:53] This is our perpetrator

[01:25:57] This one's not going to be easy to find

[01:25:59] I want the bright red suit and beard give him away

[01:26:02] Who's down there?

[01:26:07] Your brother is here

[01:26:09] Have a piece of fruit for God's sake

[01:26:11] This holiday season

[01:26:12] Incoming

[01:26:13] Tim Allen is giving

[01:26:15] Till it hurts

[01:26:21] Gary, nice

[01:26:24] Veronica, very nice

[01:26:26] The Santa Claus

[01:26:28] You're a 1200 year old elf

[01:26:30] Pretty good for your age

[01:26:32] Thanks, but I'm seeing someone unwrapping

[01:26:46] Well you cleared the room with this movie

[01:26:48] My number seven is the Santa Claus

[01:26:51] Only confusing everyone on how Santa Claus

[01:26:55] Is spelled for years to come

[01:26:57] Huh?

[01:26:59] Yep

[01:27:01] Very few Christmases have come and gone

[01:27:03] Without someone in my family watching this

[01:27:06] So

[01:27:07] I had to put it on the list

[01:27:09] I'm pretty sure it's on

[01:27:09] Is it even ABC Family anymore?

[01:27:12] It's not anymore

[01:27:13] Who has cable anymore, Ryan

[01:27:15] Well they do 31 Days of Christmas

[01:27:17] And it's always on there

[01:27:18] Yeah

[01:27:18] This film got overplayed in our house

[01:27:21] My dad likes this movie

[01:27:23] Yep, I watched this with my dad a lot

[01:27:25] And I thought you'd watch it with the same opinion

[01:27:27] It's, you know

[01:27:28] When watching the trailer I was telling Korean

[01:27:30] It's harmless

[01:27:31] Definitely a family comedy

[01:27:34] Yeah, no, I'm just not a big fan

[01:27:36] Except for Galaxy Clustin Toy Story

[01:27:38] I have zero interest outside of that

[01:27:41] I don't think it's aged as well

[01:27:42] As National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

[01:27:45] Yeah

[01:27:45] I think the Tim Allen bit kind of gets old

[01:27:48] But yeah

[01:27:49] I mean I've seen it so many times

[01:27:51] It's all awash at this point

[01:27:55] Yeah, it's true

[01:27:55] I think that there are legit great jokes in that movie

[01:27:59] There are, yeah

[01:28:00] Grace, she passed away 30 years ago

[01:28:04] The blessing

[01:28:06] Oh my gosh

[01:28:07] Yeah, my number seven is The Santa Claus

[01:28:10] Brad

[01:28:11] Number six

[01:28:12] My number six I guess is our first repeat

[01:28:15] Which is Pulp Fiction

[01:28:16] Still my favorite Tarantino movie

[01:28:21] Minds of Glorious Bastards

[01:28:25] Great, thank you

[01:28:26] That's my chair

[01:28:27] Guys you're wrong it's four rooms

[01:28:29] His segment in four rooms

[01:28:32] I think what keeps this fresh is the

[01:28:35] The dis

[01:28:37] Jointed time jump

[01:28:38] Yeah

[01:28:40] It's still a unique film

[01:28:42] Yeah, like if this had been just like a linear

[01:28:44] Like they go from this to this to this

[01:28:47] It would be pretty average

[01:28:48] But I think because it's broken up so well

[01:28:51] You know to this day I'm still like

[01:28:52] Figuring out okay well that this happened here

[01:28:55] Then this happened over there

[01:28:56] Yeah, so this is how they connect

[01:28:58] But yeah just the dialogue alone

[01:29:01] Is

[01:29:02] Like I literally watched it last night

[01:29:04] And was just like trying to make this

[01:29:05] Blue Ray and just got sucked into watching this movie

[01:29:09] But

[01:29:10] As a filmmaker

[01:29:11] I've had to suffer through watching dozens of

[01:29:15] Copycat aspiring filmmakers

[01:29:17] Just making their

[01:29:18] Shitty dialogue movie

[01:29:21] Inspired by this movie

[01:29:23] That's been a rough go but yeah

[01:29:25] Yeah it's just a

[01:29:28] Great film

[01:29:31] So yeah my number six is

[01:29:32] Pulp Fiction

[01:29:33] Cool cool

[01:29:35] Zach, number six

[01:29:36] Alright, my number six

[01:29:38] Is the greatest thing George Lucas ever did

[01:29:42] Kill the band

[01:29:43] Get this to the actors

[01:29:44] Chew carton

[01:29:45] We're one faithful evening in 1939

[01:29:48] 40 seconds to air

[01:29:50] I hate opening nights

[01:29:52] A brand new network

[01:29:53] 15 seconds

[01:29:54] Was making its nationwide debut

[01:29:57] Cue Dexter

[01:29:58] Hello

[01:30:03] You got a show people

[01:30:04] When suddenly

[01:30:05] There will be no dead air on this network

[01:30:08] The drama came off the air

[01:30:12] And into our living rooms

[01:30:15] I have a bad feeling about this

[01:30:16] As millions of listeners became witnesses

[01:30:19] To murder

[01:30:21] Call the police

[01:30:23] I want a call station to the way I get into the studio

[01:30:26] Now, the cast and crew of WPN

[01:30:29] It's him

[01:30:30] The killer

[01:30:30] They don't know what you know that I know

[01:30:36] But I do know that you don't know what you think you know

[01:30:38] Oh no

[01:30:39] Come on kids, spill the beans

[01:30:41] Are you completely out of your mind?

[01:30:45] Very close to figuring out who did

[01:30:46] And keep from becoming the killer's next victim

[01:30:49] I'm gonna use my dressing room

[01:30:53] I'm invited, what the hell do you think that star means?

[01:30:56] Your Jewish?

[01:30:57] Universal Pictures and George Lucas

[01:30:59] Invite you to exercise your imagination

[01:31:03] Easy for you to say

[01:31:05] Enough funny

[01:31:08] Magical

[01:31:09] Musical

[01:31:11] Mystery

[01:31:12] Got it, easy contagious

[01:31:15] Radio Land Murders

[01:31:17] Starring Mary Stewart Masterson

[01:31:19] Brian Banban

[01:31:20] Ned Beatty

[01:31:21] Michael Lachin

[01:31:22] And Christopher Lloyd

[01:31:24] He's dying in there, we gotta rip the glass, you should go

[01:31:26] Right

[01:31:30] Radio Land Murders

[01:31:32] Directed by Mel Smith

[01:31:33] See, my number six is Radio Land Murders

[01:31:37] As I said before, there is a dearth of old time radio material out there

[01:31:41] And George Lucas

[01:31:43] Seems like 1994 is a big year for it

[01:31:45] Oh yeah, yeah, I think this was the peak

[01:31:48] We haven't recovered since

[01:31:50] We haven't gotten another peak like this

[01:31:52] 1994 has a real resurgence of 1920s era movies

[01:31:56] More like the 40s

[01:31:58] 40s, yeah

[01:31:59] The aesthetic for sure

[01:32:01] There's more coming

[01:32:02] And this one is

[01:32:06] I think one of the beautiful parts of it

[01:32:08] Is that if you were to just hop across this film

[01:32:11] On a streaming service

[01:32:12] And be like, Radio Land Murders, that's interesting

[01:32:14] I feel like it's a film that would surprise you

[01:32:16] With how entertained you'll feel watching it

[01:32:18] It's a zany

[01:32:22] Slapstick screwball-ish comedy

[01:32:24] Like it melds a lot of different forms of comedy

[01:32:26] Into it with the murder mystery

[01:32:28] It gives a chance to, you know, lion eyes

[01:32:32] The golden age of radio and the era of imagination

[01:32:35] George Burns makes his final film appearance in this movie

[01:32:39] Basically telling the same jokes he's been telling

[01:32:41] At that point for the last 30 years

[01:32:44] And it centers around it

[01:32:46] And it's a very, I think, fun murder mystery

[01:32:50] That if you're a fan of the golden age of radio

[01:32:53] Is a brilliant twist

[01:32:55] By the time you get to the end of it

[01:32:57] Because it speaks to your heart a little bit

[01:33:00] In a very funny way

[01:33:04] And it's just nice that like

[01:33:06] There's one George Lucas property out there

[01:33:08] That isn't the focus of consternation

[01:33:12] Around the internet

[01:33:13] And it's just one thing we can all enjoy

[01:33:15] And be like, yeah, this was fun, right

[01:33:16] And Ryan

[01:33:17] We can enjoy it because nobody knows it exists

[01:33:19] That's exactly its greatest power

[01:33:22] It's like an invisible movie

[01:33:24] And Ryan, here's something fun for you

[01:33:26] One of the few PG movies out there

[01:33:29] That is a sequel with boobs

[01:33:31] Yes

[01:33:32] In the very beginning of the movie

[01:33:34] So does airplane

[01:33:36] Well, okay, one of the few

[01:33:38] I said one of the few

[01:33:39] Dang it

[01:33:40] But yes, and Christopher Lloyd, you saw

[01:33:43] Is also in there

[01:33:44] Also the great Steven Tobolowski is in there

[01:33:46] I won't say what he's doing in there

[01:33:48] But let's just say he's very important to the movie

[01:33:52] And yeah

[01:33:54] It's just a lot of fun

[01:33:55] I really think that this is one of those films

[01:33:57] Where if you pop it on with nothing else to watch

[01:34:00] You will find yourself entertained with it

[01:34:02] And like I said

[01:34:03] There's slapstick elements of it

[01:34:04] But it handles screwball pretty well

[01:34:06] Not as well as another movie on my list

[01:34:09] But it gets there

[01:34:10] It gets there pretty damn well

[01:34:12] So yeah, Radio Land Murders

[01:34:14] Coming out on Blu-ray from Keen O'Lorber

[01:34:17] Good, one down

[01:34:19] Another to go

[01:34:20] Get fucking quiz show on Blu-ray

[01:34:23] My number six is

[01:34:25] From a series of films

[01:34:28] That this gentleman to my right

[01:34:29] Introduced me to

[01:34:30] And I don't get to sweep him very often

[01:34:33] In film explosions

[01:34:33] But I think this is a time that I'm going to

[01:34:40] In a distant corner of our galaxy

[01:34:44] A secret observatory is attacked

[01:34:49] A brilliant scientist

[01:34:51] Is found

[01:34:53] And a mysterious ribbon of energy

[01:34:55] Where past and future collide

[01:34:58] Is unleashed

[01:34:59] It's a doorway

[01:35:01] That we call the Nexus

[01:35:02] Every ship which has approached the ribbon

[01:35:05] Has either been destroyed or severely damaged

[01:35:09] Obviously they were looking for something

[01:35:10] There's still no indication

[01:35:12] Of why they attacked the station

[01:35:13] I must return to the observatory immediately

[01:35:16] There's nothing I can do

[01:35:17] Timing is very important in my experience

[01:35:23] What the hell is he doing?

[01:35:25] I have an appointment with Eternity

[01:35:27] And I don't want to be late

[01:35:30] Someone doesn't care about weapons

[01:35:31] Or power

[01:35:32] He just cares about getting back to the Nexus

[01:35:36] The star is going to collapse in a matter of minutes

[01:35:39] That'll destroy everything in this system

[01:35:42] 230 million, sir

[01:35:43] Why would he destroy us, darling?

[01:35:46] I have to stop him

[01:35:47] But I can't do this alone

[01:35:48] I need help

[01:35:49] I know someone who can

[01:35:51] You say history considers me dead

[01:35:54] Who am I to argue with history?

[01:35:56] You're a Starfleet officer

[01:35:57] You have a duty

[01:35:58] I don't need to be lectured by you

[01:35:59] I was out saving the galaxy

[01:36:00] When your grandfather was in diapers

[01:36:03] Now

[01:36:03] The torch of adventure is about to be passed

[01:36:12] You're a fool disruptor

[01:36:17] Alright, let's move them out

[01:36:24] Let's go, take them out

[01:36:25] Ten seconds to warp core breach

[01:36:31] Let's try and cheat them together

[01:36:32] Warp one, engage

[01:36:37] Star Trek Generations

[01:36:41] So my number six is Star Trek Generations

[01:36:43] I don't even like the movie

[01:36:44] I just wanted to sweep Brad

[01:36:47] That's rude

[01:36:47] Should the line be drawn here?

[01:36:52] No farther

[01:36:54] More emphasis on here and then yes

[01:36:57] I'm not Patrick Stewart and I'm not going to pretend to be

[01:37:00] When I was never the biggest Star Trek fan

[01:37:02] In fact, I never really could get into it

[01:37:05] I saw a smattering of the next generation episodes

[01:37:08] Because my uncle loved it

[01:37:10] Your uncle's a smart guy

[01:37:12] And then Brad didn't show me the first film first

[01:37:15] He showed me six first

[01:37:18] And I started going seeing them at the Esquire

[01:37:22] Which four still being a personal favorite

[01:37:25] But this one

[01:37:27] I showed you six and then I think you saw the 2009 reboot

[01:37:30] And then that made you more interested in watching the rest of them

[01:37:33] Correct, and so this one was the multiverse

[01:37:36] Before there's a multiverse

[01:37:37] Bringing two generations of Star Trek actors to it

[01:37:43] And there's something magical about watching Patrick Stewart

[01:37:47] And William Shatner share the screen together

[01:37:49] Because they're both so different in their commanding presence on screen

[01:37:56] It's like fulfilling a question that was posed to one of them at a comic-con

[01:38:02] Do you think that Picard and Kirk would came up?

[01:38:05] Because when you watch it

[01:38:06] I think Kirk has his moments of being really forceful

[01:38:11] But he's more kind of

[01:38:13] I don't know the right word

[01:38:15] But where I think Picard kind of commands more

[01:38:19] And it's just cool to see them play off each other

[01:38:23] And then we were watching the trailer

[01:38:24] I forgot some of the incredible shots in the film

[01:38:29] It's also fair to say that it does give Kirk

[01:38:32] More than appropriate send-off as a character

[01:38:35] Because it does allow him to be heroic

[01:38:38] While understanding who Kirk is when he's not on a starship

[01:38:42] It's a lovely catch up for anybody who wasn't a TOS fan but loved TNG

[01:38:49] Brad will talk about it later

[01:38:51] But I never was a fan so I didn't know how big of a deal this was in the Star Trek community

[01:38:55] That the two shows were coming together

[01:38:58] Because I saw this movie 20 years after it was released

[01:39:04] And I had a lot of fun

[01:39:06] I still have the blue rays of the original motion picture set

[01:39:11] And then the next generation

[01:39:13] And I put them on every once in a while because they're entertaining

[01:39:17] And this is one of them

[01:39:18] This is just a fun movie

[01:39:20] And you know a lot of my film explosion lists are usually deal with how much fun I have watching them

[01:39:26] And this is definitely a fun film to watch

[01:39:30] Corinne, number six

[01:39:32] Well up to now all of my entries have been things I watched as a kid

[01:39:36] This one? Definitely not

[01:39:38] This one I just saw for the first time like two years ago

[01:39:41] Here it is

[01:39:42] Alright, pop quiz. Airport, gunman with one hostage. He's using her for cover

[01:39:46] He's almost to a plane you're 100 feet away

[01:39:49] What do you think?

[01:39:51] Shoot the hostage

[01:39:51] Go for the good wound and he can't get to the plane with her

[01:39:56] Clear shot

[01:39:56] You're deeply nuts, you know that

[01:39:59] Alright gentlemen what we have here are 13 passengers and an express elevator

[01:40:04] Bombs already taken out cables

[01:40:05] Bomber wants $3 million or he blows the emergency brakes

[01:40:08] Anything else that will keep this elevator from falling?

[01:40:12] In the basement

[01:40:13] He can strike anywhere

[01:40:17] At any time

[01:40:18] Mr. Guest please sign in

[01:40:21] Why are they messing with me?

[01:40:23] Do they think I'm doing this for fun?

[01:40:28] For LA cop Jack Travham

[01:40:30] Tell me again Harry, why did I take this job?

[01:40:32] Come on, 30 more years of this you got a tiny pension and a cheap gold watch

[01:40:37] Cool

[01:40:38] The game began

[01:40:42] Exciting Jack

[01:40:44] Some close calls huh?

[01:40:46] When someone put the city of Los Angeles to the ultimate test

[01:40:50] Pop quiz hot shot

[01:40:52] There's a bomb on a bus

[01:40:53] Once the bus goes 50 miles an hour

[01:40:56] The bomb is armed

[01:40:57] If it drops below 50

[01:40:59] It blows up

[01:41:01] What do you do?

[01:41:05] Now he's the only solution

[01:41:13] We just got a ransom demand for you terrorist says he's rigged the city bus

[01:41:16] Where's Jack?

[01:41:20] Stay on your get this is much better

[01:42:04] You have a hair trigger aimed at your head

[01:42:05] What do you do?

[01:42:12] Get ready for rush hour

[01:42:17] So my number six is speed

[01:42:19] Which yeah like I said I watched for the first time

[01:42:22] Like a year or two ago with my friends Jerry and Brett

[01:42:25] And we had a good time

[01:42:26] Yeah a lot of like good stunts

[01:42:29] A lot of you know big explosions and set pieces

[01:42:32] And it's like damn I kind of miss movies when they were like this

[01:42:34] Before CGI took over everything

[01:42:36] And now you have to green screen Sam Jackson into a Spider-Man movie

[01:42:42] Any of them

[01:42:46] So also fun fact Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock had crushes on each other

[01:42:51] When they were filming this but neither of them knew until years later

[01:42:55] It's definitely the first Sandy Bullock movie that she took off in

[01:42:59] So that's why they made the lake house together you see to fulfill that

[01:43:03] And just like that movie before speed came out

[01:43:07] Keanu wrote her a letter and she didn't get it for several years

[01:43:11] I would love if those two movies somehow managed to merge

[01:43:15] Why do I remember fucking the lake house?

[01:43:18] That should not occupy a moment of my life

[01:43:21] Suck yourself in the dick

[01:43:22] I feel better

[01:43:26] Speed is great though it's a really fun movie

[01:43:30] It's one of those action films you're right that they don't usually make anymore

[01:43:35] I would argue you know stuff like Mission Impossible

[01:43:38] And the Fall Guy this year is definitely up that alley

[01:43:41] Fall Guy is great if you haven't seen it

[01:43:42] Yeah the John Wick movies

[01:43:44] David Lynch movies in general

[01:43:47] They're generally scratching that itch right now

[01:43:49] Nobody does that too

[01:43:51] That's not a David Lynch movie per se

[01:43:53] But you know what I mean

[01:43:54] But that's a lot of fights, this is like chases, explosions

[01:43:58] This is kind of all over the place

[01:43:59] I mean some of the excuse is liability

[01:44:01] Oh yeah

[01:44:02] I mean I definitely want the stunt people to be as safe as possible when they're filming this

[01:44:08] But yeah

[01:44:10] It's nice that you know

[01:44:13] Nice when they made movies before everything was CG

[01:44:18] So yeah my number six speed

[01:44:20] Halfway there Brad take us home at number five

[01:44:23] My number five is about brotherhood and ancient mysticism

[01:44:36] 2007

[01:44:38] Los Angeles

[01:44:40] The city has changed

[01:44:43] Cops rule the day

[01:44:47] Punks rule the night

[01:44:51] And one man wants to rule them all

[01:44:54] There's only one thing he needs to succeed

[01:45:01] This is only half of it

[01:45:04] Find me the other half now

[01:45:06] Who's got it?

[01:45:09] It magnifies the power inside you

[01:45:12] This half gives power over the body

[01:45:14] Alright so where's the on button

[01:45:17] Now two brothers will stop at nothing to protect their half

[01:45:21] Look out!

[01:45:22] That man will stop at nothing to possess it

[01:45:28] You're gonna love this

[01:45:31] Let's have some fun

[01:45:32] Who wants gum?

[01:45:34] If they succeed, they're heroes

[01:45:39] But if he does

[01:45:43] They're history

[01:45:45] Watch your step

[01:45:47] Time to skin you guys

[01:46:21] Who's Robert Patrick?

[01:46:23] Scott Wolf?

[01:46:24] Mark DeCoscos?

[01:46:26] And Elissa Milano?

[01:46:27] Double Dragon

[01:46:29] You said it

[01:46:30] Where are these two we?

[01:46:37] So yeah my number five is Double Dragon

[01:46:40] Everyone's shaking their heads

[01:46:41] Why is this higher on your list than The Lion King?

[01:46:44] One of the greatest animated movies of all time

[01:46:46] I've watched Double Dragon way more than Lion King

[01:46:49] I have it on a MVD Blu-ray

[01:46:53] Why?

[01:46:54] I watched it like a month ago even

[01:46:57] When the trailer was playing I told Brad that I saw it at the Dollar Movies in our Vata

[01:47:03] When it came out and I wanted my money back

[01:47:06] The trailer looked like what happens if you stick

[01:47:10] Martial arts movies

[01:47:11] The 80s itself and then extra cocaine from the 80s left over and put it in a blender

[01:47:18] It looked like it was the Power Rangers movie

[01:47:20] But without the Power Rangers

[01:47:21] Why do you keep on ripping on Brad?

[01:47:23] Brad why is it number five on your list?

[01:47:26] I have a soft spot for those awful video game translated movies from the 90s

[01:47:33] You know I would look at them in the game pro and be like

[01:47:37] I can't wait to watch this

[01:47:38] Then I'd look at them and my guy would be like the 1.5 game pro guy

[01:47:46] He always looks so cool

[01:47:49] But yeah I don't know I have fun with this movie

[01:47:52] It's not the best special effects of the time

[01:47:56] The story is ridiculous and a lot of it doesn't make a lot of sense

[01:48:03] The choreography is pretty not great

[01:48:07] So you're not telling me why this is so rated so high for you

[01:48:11] It's one of those nostalgic guilty pleasures of mine

[01:48:13] Yeah it's also like no one else likes it so I'm gonna like it

[01:48:18] One of those contrarian things

[01:48:22] Just like me with Radio Land Murders I understand

[01:48:24] If you're super young and listening to this podcast

[01:48:26] Double Dragon was a NES video game franchise for a long time

[01:48:30] That had close to story

[01:48:32] Keep lying to them tell them it was the number one film in 1994

[01:48:37] And the filmmakers they had to invent story to fill these video games

[01:48:40] I'm pretty sure the story in the video game is your girlfriend's kidnapped

[01:48:44] And you have to brawl through all these levels

[01:48:46] Jimmy and Billy have to just brawl their way through Los Angeles to get her back

[01:48:49] Wait did they both date the same girl?

[01:48:53] No, just one's the brother and he's like a brother so he helps them out

[01:48:57] Yes I'll go

[01:49:00] That's some shaking hands on their muscles bulging like predator

[01:49:02] That's some efficient screenwriting

[01:49:04] Perhaps you can write a double dragon reboot

[01:49:06] I could

[01:49:07] And so yeah in typical 90s movie fashion L.A. has been decimated by earthquakes

[01:49:16] And New Los Angeles has risen from the ashes

[01:49:20] And Robert Patcher is like the shadow lord I can't remember his name

[01:49:24] But he's searching for the two halves of this medallion that'll make him super powerful

[01:49:28] Wait a minute who has the two halves

[01:49:30] One was hidden by billion jeep like their adopted brothers

[01:49:36] Stop encouraging him Ryan

[01:49:39] In the east and then there's like their caretaker has the other half

[01:49:43] And they you know fate brings them together

[01:49:46] Yes

[01:49:47] I'm just genuinely interested one because I've only seen this movie once in 1994

[01:49:53] And I am shocked that it's on anybody's list

[01:49:57] I didn't know this movie existed

[01:49:59] Yeah it's hard to I mean now that it's on Blu-ray it's easier to find but for a long time

[01:50:05] I think that's how I found out about its existence was saying that MVD was putting it out

[01:50:09] Like I have no idea what this is

[01:50:13] Like early 2000 I found the DVD of it at like Walmart in Durango

[01:50:18] Like that's the only way I saw it for a long time

[01:50:22] Yeah, I don't know I just yeah Alyssa Milano's in it as like one of the many different like there's all these different gangs in Los Angeles

[01:50:30] And they all were in for

[01:50:32] I love the idea of Alyssa Milano running a gang in Los Angeles on its own merits

[01:50:36] Is she the shadow lord? That would be a great twist

[01:50:39] No she's part of like the freedom fighters or whatever like her dad's chief of police

[01:50:44] So she has a sneak around at night with the gang to like avoid

[01:50:47] Stole that from Friday the 13th part 6

[01:50:50] There's a tenuous curfews with all the gangs like they made a deal with the chief of police to like only start shit at night

[01:50:57] I do it

[01:50:58] So it's like the purge

[01:51:00] I love the idea of the gangs making a deal with the police like look once the sun is up

[01:51:06] No more crime

[01:51:08] And then the gangs just agree to it

[01:51:10] Actually follow it yeah and then Robert Patrick is like this guy who can turn into a shadow

[01:51:16] Once he has one half of the medallions and definitely better than the lion king and then there's boba bobo the roided out guy

[01:51:24] You're right the shadow sucks compared to this movie

[01:51:27] Burnout of theater yeah it's crazy

[01:51:29] It is

[01:51:30] When the fuck you just said you're special

[01:51:35] But there's a better video game movie from this year coming out that I'll talk about later

[01:51:41] Zack number five

[01:51:42] Alright my number five now Brad

[01:51:45] If you ever get out of here out of this recordings booth booth and you could find me just remember Z1 to Naio

[01:51:59] By the power vested in me by the state of Maine

[01:52:01] I hereby order you to serve two life sentences back to back

[01:52:05] One for each of your victims

[01:52:08] Sub-E-L

[01:52:08] They came to Shawshank prison in 1947

[01:52:23] Why'd they do it?

[01:52:26] I didn't since you asked

[01:52:28] You can sit right in

[01:52:29] I must admit I didn't think much of Andy first time I laid eyes on him

[01:52:34] He had a quiet way about it

[01:52:38] It just wasn't normal around here

[01:52:41] There are places in the world that aren't made out of stone

[01:52:51] There's something inside they can't touch

[01:52:54] What are you talking about?

[01:52:56] The dangerous thing

[01:53:02] Man unseen

[01:53:08] Sick or dead in there I kid you not

[01:53:11] I'm gonna get used to that idea

[01:53:13] Oh my holy god

[01:53:15] I guess it comes down to a simple choice

[01:53:20] Get busy living

[01:53:21] Or get busy dying

[01:53:24] Get busy living

[01:53:27] Or get busy dying

[01:53:32] That's downright

[01:53:47] So this is

[01:53:49] You and me buddy?

[01:53:50] It is

[01:53:50] Why not? Wonderful I'll let you go first

[01:53:52] The Shawshank Redemption is a very popular film

[01:53:57] It's the most popular film on IMDB

[01:54:00] Corinne obviously hates it because it's

[01:54:03] Sad or something I don't know

[01:54:04] It's just it's a very sad and brutal movie

[01:54:07] Yeah but the performances and the film are really good

[01:54:12] I'm not saying it's not well made

[01:54:14] I'm just saying it's like a

[01:54:15] What's the one with the

[01:54:20] Nazi prison camp

[01:54:23] With Schindler's List

[01:54:24] It's like Schindler's List

[01:54:26] I mean it's not quite to that level

[01:54:29] Because this movie has hope at the end

[01:54:31] Schindler's List is like oh

[01:54:33] They murdered 6 million people

[01:54:35] That sucks

[01:54:35] And then you see the girl in the pink rancor

[01:54:38] You know I just can't handle it

[01:54:39] This movie

[01:54:40] Yeah the performances are great

[01:54:42] Again this is another film

[01:54:44] Where it is a fabulous film

[01:54:46] And you mentioned the TBS thing

[01:54:48] Because it's shown all the time

[01:54:50] And it has become

[01:54:55] So popular

[01:54:56] And so revered

[01:54:57] That's another like man this is a really good movie

[01:55:01] It's a really good

[01:55:02] You know

[01:55:03] It's the Pulp Fiction thing

[01:55:04] But this is the thing

[01:55:07] I think Shawshank

[01:55:09] Has

[01:55:10] A bit of a repellent from those attacks

[01:55:13] Because it is very hard to hate a movie that

[01:55:18] That's main theme is never losing hope

[01:55:21] Yeah I mean I'm not hating on it

[01:55:23] I totally give what you're saying

[01:55:25] I think like

[01:55:27] And in a way that would be my answer to your question about it

[01:55:31] Because there's a lot of dark things

[01:55:32] That occur in the movie

[01:55:33] But there's an ever quiet defiance

[01:55:37] From virtually every inhabitant of Shawshank prison

[01:55:39] That is so masterfully

[01:55:43] Yeah when Tim Robbins escapes

[01:55:45] And you know the rock is thrown through the poster

[01:55:50] I remember seeing that having like this relief

[01:55:52] Like he did it he got out

[01:55:54] He's wrongfully accused

[01:55:57] And he suffered all these brutalities

[01:56:00] And then there's just this hope

[01:56:02] And even Morgan Freeman's speech at the end of the parole board

[01:56:07] Is pretty fantastic

[01:56:08] So you can stamp whatever you want on there

[01:56:09] Because to tell you the truth I don't give a shit

[01:56:11] Oh my god so like

[01:56:14] This is one of the

[01:56:15] This film and the film after this in my list

[01:56:18] Are films that I saw for the first time

[01:56:20] In my senior year of high school

[01:56:22] In a writing on film class

[01:56:24] And Shawshank Redemption is a great movie to teach you about how to write about film

[01:56:29] Because it lays out so many complex themes

[01:56:32] In such a palatable way

[01:56:34] That it allows you to digest difficult material with excellent writing

[01:56:39] That as again there's a

[01:56:42] Naturnal and quiet defiance

[01:56:44] That each of those inhabitants have

[01:56:46] That get them through each day

[01:56:48] To the point when the poster

[01:56:50] When the rock gets thrown through the poster

[01:56:54] Your grip with suspense

[01:56:55] And then when they reveal the whole

[01:56:57] It's like the big cheer moment

[01:56:59] Because throughout all this shit

[01:57:01] Andy Dufresne has been kicked around

[01:57:04] Shaved around beaten

[01:57:05] And he has never lost

[01:57:08] The knowledge that he could get out of there

[01:57:11] After being wrongly accused

[01:57:13] And I will say that

[01:57:14] When I watched this film for the first time

[01:57:17] It was a film that I immediately

[01:57:18] Went to find a copy on DVD to re-watch

[01:57:21] And then as I started getting more into

[01:57:24] Watching side-quest movies in the gangster genre

[01:57:28] From Warner Brothers back in the 30s

[01:57:30] There's a lot of prison movies that

[01:57:32] Create this inspiration

[01:57:33] I would put this on a double bill with each Don I Die

[01:57:36] If you really wanted to get a sense of

[01:57:38] The idea of hope in these prison movies

[01:57:40] That were a big part of the 30s

[01:57:43] And Darabont really captures that essence

[01:57:47] And I think it's not technically distributed by Warner Brothers

[01:57:50] Since its initial run

[01:57:51] It's more of a Castle Rock Columbia thing

[01:57:53] But it so emulates the 30s Warner Brothers

[01:57:58] Gangster prison sub-genre movie

[01:58:01] The I'm a fugitive from a chain gang

[01:58:03] Each Don I Die San Quentin

[01:58:04] And there is such a masterful execution

[01:58:08] Of that in such a palatable story

[01:58:10] It's my favorite Stephen King story

[01:58:13] Technically

[01:58:15] I guess I really like The Shining as a book

[01:58:18] But you know what I mean

[01:58:19] And I think that there's not a sour note performance in this movie

[01:58:25] No one is a weak link

[01:58:27] When I found out that the voice of Mr. Krabs

[01:58:31] Is the shitty guard at Shawshank

[01:58:34] My brain exploded

[01:58:36] And Joel Gunn

[01:58:38] Joel Gunn's I think his name is

[01:58:40] Who plays the Warden

[01:58:42] Or Bob Gunn

[01:58:44] Sorry Bob Gunn

[01:58:45] When he was the

[01:58:49] Him as the Warden

[01:58:51] Is as dastardly and shitty as he is

[01:58:54] He is immensely cloutable with

[01:58:55] I don't want him found now

[01:58:57] Not tomorrow, not after breakfast now

[01:59:01] And the

[01:59:02] I will say that like I don't think about family guy jokes that often

[01:59:06] But the Shawshank redemption parody that family guy did

[01:59:12] Is a pretty damn solid

[01:59:16] Parody of this film

[01:59:17] Because you love this film so much that

[01:59:19] You don't think that you'd want to make fun of it

[01:59:21] But they did find a miraculous way to do so

[01:59:23] Like the whole prison escape scene

[01:59:27] In itself is so harrowing and tension fueled

[01:59:30] So I love that their joke of it was just to play the friends theme

[01:59:34] The knife was gonna be this way

[01:59:36] Bang bang bang bang bang

[01:59:40] And yeah

[01:59:41] And I think the ending just gives you so much of

[01:59:45] A cheer and an optimism of hope

[01:59:48] So like it's just fantastic

[01:59:52] This movie is a miraculous miracle

[01:59:55] To say the least

[01:59:56] So yeah I think people should watch it

[02:00:00] My number five is the only other movie on my list

[02:00:04] That was not a childhood favorite of mine

[02:00:07] It was something I discovered as an adult

[02:00:10] But it's definitely one that if I had seen as a kid

[02:00:14] I would have liked it and appreciated it

[02:00:16] Here it is

[02:00:17] What do those girls do over their holiday?

[02:00:21] Over the mysteries of female life

[02:00:22] There is drawn a veil best left undisturbed

[02:00:25] Hockey

[02:00:27] Revenge is mine

[02:00:30] Quotee

[02:00:31] Excellent

[02:00:32] You ought to publish it Joe really

[02:00:35] Columbia Pictures invites you

[02:00:38] To share the holidays

[02:00:40] With a family of little women

[02:00:43] Joe

[02:00:44] If I were gonna be a writer

[02:00:46] I'd go to New York and pursue the stage

[02:00:49] Are you shocked?

[02:00:51] Very

[02:00:53] Meg

[02:01:00] You've ruined me

[02:01:02] Beth

[02:01:03] What's your Christmas wish?

[02:01:05] Perhaps we could send the humbles our bread

[02:01:07] They have so little and we have so much

[02:01:10] Amy

[02:01:10] I've waited my whole life to be kissed

[02:01:14] And what if I miss it?

[02:01:16] I promise to kiss you

[02:01:18] Before you die

[02:01:19] Just be more careful

[02:01:28] Through times of hardship

[02:01:33] And times of joy

[02:01:38] Present myself

[02:01:47] As a loyal and very humble servant of the club

[02:01:50] Four sisters

[02:01:52] Followed their dreams

[02:01:53] Joe you have so many extraordinary gifts

[02:01:56] How can you expect to lead an ordinary life?

[02:01:59] You should be writing from the depths of your soul

[02:02:02] Found their love

[02:02:04] Why must we marry at all?

[02:02:06] Why can't things just stay as they are?

[02:02:09] I have loved you

[02:02:10] Since the moment I clapped eyes on you

[02:02:13] Daddy please don't ask me

[02:02:17] Shared their tears

[02:02:18] I love being home

[02:02:21] But I don't like being left behind

[02:02:30] From girls to women

[02:02:32] Didn't I say I would kiss you before you die?

[02:02:37] Their destiny

[02:02:38] You have a daughter

[02:02:41] And a son

[02:02:42] Was wherever their hearts would take them

[02:02:48] Winona Ryder

[02:02:50] Trini Alvarado

[02:02:51] Samantha Mathis

[02:02:53] Kirsten Dunst

[02:02:54] Claire Danes

[02:02:55] And Susan Sarandon

[02:02:57] The story that has lived in our hearts for generations

[02:03:01] Comes to the screen for the holidays

[02:03:04] Oh my goodness

[02:03:12] So my number five is Little Women

[02:03:14] The 94 version

[02:03:15] Because there are many versions of this

[02:03:18] So we have to clarify

[02:03:19] But yeah, so this has Winona Ryder

[02:03:23] Right

[02:03:24] As Joe and has Christian Bale

[02:03:27] As one of the main love interests

[02:03:30] And a couple of other actors you might recognize

[02:03:34] It's a very well done version

[02:03:36] Costumes are all on point

[02:03:38] Which is something that Greta Gerwig's version can't say

[02:03:45] But the movie has Florence Pugh

[02:03:47] It does not

[02:03:48] Or Sersa Ronan

[02:03:50] No, it's still very well made though

[02:03:51] And this version is probably the one that sells me on

[02:03:54] Professor Bear as a love interest

[02:03:56] Which none of the others do

[02:03:57] But that's kind of on purpose

[02:03:58] Because Louise May Alcott did not want Joe to end up with anybody

[02:04:02] But her publisher's demanded

[02:04:03] It's like if you're going to have a woman protagonist

[02:04:05] She has to be married by the end

[02:04:07] She has to be defined by a man

[02:04:09] I know but that's how it was

[02:04:16] So yeah, Joe had to be married

[02:04:17] And so, you know, Louise May Alcott wrote Professor Bear

[02:04:22] But she didn't really give him much of a character

[02:04:23] Because she didn't like that she had to write Joe

[02:04:27] Ending up with somebody

[02:04:28] But this version of the story

[02:04:30] Actually sells me on Professor Bear as a love interest

[02:04:34] It's maybe similar to the Pride and Prejudice

[02:04:37] Thing where it's like that cousin

[02:04:38] That they have to

[02:04:39] She might be forced to marry at one point

[02:04:41] Mr. Collins

[02:04:41] And you're just like in the 2005 version

[02:04:44] It's kind of like, ah, he's just a dork

[02:04:47] Like a big old fucking dork

[02:04:49] Well no, Professor Bear is like very lovable

[02:04:52] In this version anyway

[02:04:54] He's very charming and very nice

[02:04:56] But this version is just better at presenting it

[02:04:59] As a potential solution

[02:05:00] You definitely spend more time with him

[02:05:02] And you see more of the chemistry between him and Joe

[02:05:04] See I get that in the Tomb Raider reboot

[02:05:07] And in the last trilogy

[02:05:09] The third part

[02:05:11] They keep on trying to set up that you're going to be with this dude

[02:05:14] And I made sure he died

[02:05:15] Because I'm like Laura Croft does not need a boyfriend

[02:05:20] Did Louisa May Elcott write a Tomb Raider script?

[02:05:24] I would have loved to see that

[02:05:26] You can make choices

[02:05:27] And I made sure that mother fucker didn't app with Laura Croft

[02:05:31] That was a direct quote from Louisa May Elcott's Tomb Raider movie

[02:05:34] That never got produced

[02:05:36] Also I've actually never read the book

[02:05:39] Surprisingly and my childhood best friend loved it

[02:05:42] I've never read the book and it's like on seven of your film explosion list

[02:05:45] I don't know I just love the story

[02:05:47] I have never met a person in real life that has read this book

[02:05:50] So I only knew this book by movie

[02:05:53] My childhood best friend it was her favorite book of all time

[02:05:56] Apologies to Corinne's friend

[02:05:58] When I have time I will read Little Women

[02:06:00] Which maybe never

[02:06:02] So anyway my number five is Little Women from 1994

[02:06:09] It's a repeat it's Little Women

[02:06:12] No that's gonna be Ryan's

[02:06:15] My number four is the solemn final note to a great actor

[02:07:25] To do better than that

[02:07:32] Once to go home

[02:07:51] So yeah my number four is the video game Masterpiece Street Fighter

[02:07:54] Starting Sean Claude Van Dam

[02:07:57] And the late Raoul Julia as M. Bison

[02:08:00] I will say the Blu-ray that came out a few years ago

[02:08:04] That had the documentary

[02:08:05] Learning about what he went through because he was so sick

[02:08:09] Just get ready for a take is pretty remarkable

[02:08:12] Yeah I watched all those special features today actually

[02:08:14] And yeah all the other actors talking about like

[02:08:16] He was like 115 pounds

[02:08:19] And you know he'd be

[02:08:21] In his chair whatever waiting for the set up to finish

[02:08:24] And then as soon as they were like action he'd like snap into

[02:08:27] Like his tremendous gravitas acting

[02:08:31] And yeah people just like loved him

[02:08:33] And like he only did it because his kids loved Street Fighter so much

[02:08:36] And he really didn't talk about he was sick too

[02:08:38] Yeah

[02:08:38] He was super sick and yeah you're right

[02:08:42] It's the making of this movie is really cool on that Blu-ray

[02:08:45] If you don't know what I'm talking about it's a Mill Creek one

[02:08:48] But the Steelbook is really awesome because the inside they also have Bison books

[02:08:52] Which is a great little wing to the movie

[02:08:55] And the movie is not good but the Blu-ray is really great

[02:08:57] Well they talk about how Stephen DeSousa you know Capcom was taking pitches

[02:09:01] And they gave everyone like 48 hours to do a pitch

[02:09:04] And so he threw that together and then

[02:09:07] They only gave him like 30 million dollars to work with

[02:09:10] And like Van Damme and Raul Julia took up like seven of it

[02:09:15] So alone

[02:09:16] So yeah and then they tried to shoot in I think Thailand

[02:09:19] And that was a disaster

[02:09:21] They shot some of it in Australia

[02:09:24] And like they re-shot like a third of the movie at one point

[02:09:27] And then Raul Julia like because he was so sick

[02:09:32] Like could only do the reshoots at like the end of the whole process

[02:09:35] So they had to like push everything to the end for him

[02:09:38] And just like it screwed the schedule up and

[02:09:41] You know even though DeSousa was like a big Hollywood writer before that

[02:09:45] This is his first directing effort and he did his best

[02:09:48] Yeah Die Hard

[02:09:49] And some other things but yeah he wrote and directed this thing

[02:09:52] And you know he's balancing like oh also Capcom's like hey

[02:09:56] We're going to introduce four new characters into the game

[02:09:59] Can you put those in the movie too

[02:10:00] So he's like juggling like 14 different story lines and characters

[02:10:04] And I think you know he did the best he could with

[02:10:07] What he was given to him

[02:10:09] I almost want to see like an Edward-esque movie

[02:10:13] About the making of the movie because it sounds like it's got the trappings of like a

[02:10:17] Interesting making of movie you know

[02:10:20] Yeah I think it's another one of those fun like Hollywood disaster movies that

[02:10:23] The making was probably way more interesting than the actual movie itself

[02:10:27] But I still have fun with it again

[02:10:28] Another movie that like just looked awesome in GamePro

[02:10:31] Couldn't wait for it to come out and then it did

[02:10:33] And like I didn't mind it you know

[02:10:35] I wasn't invested in those characters that much again

[02:10:38] Street Fighter not a lot of backstory for those characters before the anime

[02:10:41] So yeah

[02:10:44] Better than The Lion King

[02:10:45] Put it on the poster

[02:10:50] Zack number four

[02:10:51] Alright my number four is the last trailer I get to introduce

[02:10:57] It's a movie by two brothers

[02:11:01] And one crazy motherfucker who brought people into a game

[02:11:06] Cabin in the woods how in the world would these three work together?

[02:11:10] The answer is this

[02:11:14] Once upon a time the American dream was power

[02:11:21] Well and success

[02:11:25] But in the city that never sleeps

[02:11:27] The American dream is about to get a wake-up call

[02:11:32] Just got hired today you know entry level

[02:11:38] But I got big ideas

[02:11:41] When the president owner of 87% of the company stock

[02:11:45] Then the company too has a problem

[02:11:47] That we need now is a new president

[02:11:50] Some jerk

[02:11:52] We can really push around

[02:11:54] Yo yeah yo boss

[02:11:56] This slatter was sat down this morning by the big man himself

[02:11:59] Sit down man go ahead

[02:12:01] Try it out

[02:12:02] The working city on idea man when they promoted you from the mail room

[02:12:06] Well I guess so I don't think they promoted me because they thought I was a schmo

[02:12:11] The guys are real moron

[02:12:12] No thank you

[02:12:14] What an imbecile

[02:12:15] Come up with this

[02:12:17] From Joel and Ethan Cohen

[02:12:19] It's fun it's healthy the kids will just love it

[02:12:22] And we put a little sand inside to make the experience more pleasant

[02:12:25] They have any idea of such a huge response

[02:12:28] This is the president

[02:12:29] I don't think anybody expected this much hoopla

[02:12:33] Comes a comedy of fame

[02:12:36] Fortune

[02:12:38] Sex

[02:12:40] Greed

[02:12:42] And the American way

[02:12:43] Say Amy how about you and I grab a little dinner a show after work

[02:12:46] I was thinking maybe a king and a

[02:12:48] How about a pohomom

[02:12:50] Tim Robbins, Jennifer Jason Lee

[02:12:52] And Paul Newman

[02:12:53] I'm getting off this merry-go-round

[02:12:59] Proxy glass

[02:13:00] The hutsucker proxy

[02:13:08] So yeah my number four is the hutsucker proxy

[02:13:10] A film by Joel and Ethan Cohen

[02:13:13] Written by Joel and Ethan Cohen

[02:13:14] And Sam Rainey

[02:13:15] I would never leave out Sam Rainey's name

[02:13:20] And so when he jumps he hits the glass and slides down

[02:13:24] And they go we got something new installed

[02:13:26] By the way Sam didn't just bring himself to the table

[02:13:30] He brought along his friend Bruce Campbell

[02:13:32] Oh yeah

[02:13:33] Yeah this is another one of those films that I saw for the first time

[02:13:38] I obviously have talked about growing up among

[02:13:42] As a Cohen brothers fan

[02:13:44] Partially because of my father and over there were art though

[02:13:47] And just getting lost in their films

[02:13:49] I had no idea about this film in their filmography until I saw it

[02:13:52] In that writing on film class

[02:13:56] And come to learn that because the film was so ill-received

[02:14:00] And was a big box office flop

[02:14:03] That it kind of

[02:14:05] It was sort of a gear shift for them

[02:14:08] And what they had planned with silver pictures

[02:14:10] That they went off and wrote and created Fargo

[02:14:13] And changed the whole game for them completely

[02:14:14] With Oscars and everything

[02:14:17] The story for those who don't know what it is

[02:14:20] It's a screwball comedy set in the world of fifties

[02:14:24] Almost mad men

[02:14:26] Kind of cutthroat world

[02:14:29] Tim Robbins plays this night show

[02:14:32] A naive boy from the Midwest who comes to the big city

[02:14:35] And works his way up the corporate ladder

[02:14:38] And the gag is that he comes up with an idea

[02:14:43] That he's trying to pitch to the corporate overlords

[02:14:46] And it's just a circle

[02:14:47] Ends up being the hula hoop

[02:14:49] And the story that follows is just

[02:14:52] It's all the ingredients of a good screwball comedy

[02:14:56] Are put into this movie

[02:14:57] And I think handled very delicately

[02:15:01] And passionately by Joel, Ethan and Sam

[02:15:05] They really are the only people to my mind

[02:15:10] That are capable of still making a screwball comedy

[02:15:12] And making it work in the modern era

[02:15:14] Because it's not necessarily an art everybody's adjusted to

[02:15:19] Although I think the Fairleys

[02:15:20] Come kind of close with Dumb and Dumber

[02:15:22] Because it has those properties

[02:15:23] It's more slapstick and three stuges

[02:15:25] But has good verbiage and wordplay

[02:15:27] And this is what happens when you give the Coen Brothers

[02:15:31] A pretty big budget because this film visually looks amazing

[02:15:35] And stunning the set design costumes

[02:15:39] They all look so fucking incredible

[02:15:40] And they find a wonderful way to bring their own sense of humor

[02:15:48] And their specific vision into what could otherwise be a run-of-the-mill comedy

[02:15:56] They really make something like this stand out

[02:15:59] And it features the most cartoony-ish of the gags

[02:16:04] That they would ever concoct for a movie, I think

[02:16:06] Outside of Maybe Hale Caesar

[02:16:08] It's definitely the Sam Raimi influence

[02:16:10] I think that that is a lot of his touch

[02:16:12] Like the whole ending of the film

[02:16:15] Where the time reverses because he stops the clock

[02:16:19] And the prior hudsucker smoking the cigars

[02:16:24] And the angels and all that stuff

[02:16:27] And it's just a miraculous little gem of a movie

[02:16:31] And if you haven't seen it, Warner Archive did put a Blu-ray out of it

[02:16:35] So I would recommend you people check that out

[02:16:37] And as far as Bruce Campbell's more elevated role in a Coen Brothers movie is concerned

[02:16:43] Nails that he has the perfect screwball foil

[02:16:45] And I love watching Jennifer Jason Lee slap the shit out of him multiple times in that movie

[02:16:50] And yes, I bet you Ryan that Sam wrote that very specifically

[02:16:56] Hey Joe, Ethan, give me a favor

[02:16:58] Just make sure he keeps getting slapped like a ton

[02:17:03] So yeah, hudsucker proxy, more than worth your time

[02:17:07] My number four film is also the last one I'll introduce

[02:17:10] But what happens if a writer of a series of books

[02:17:15] The town is alive as well

[02:17:17] I tell you what, it's not reality

[02:18:04] Kane's writing has been known to have an effect on his readers

[02:18:11] See this? It's a map

[02:18:12] This whole thing has been stated

[02:18:14] You just get out

[02:18:16] This is not reality

[02:18:17] It's all happening for real, 20

[02:18:41] Hope so, the movie comes out next month

[02:18:55] Number four for me from 1994 from Italy is

[02:19:01] John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness

[02:19:05] It's a good cheat, it's a good cheat

[02:19:06] Well I go off just so everybody knows

[02:19:09] I go off Letterbox when films are released

[02:19:11] Unless Italy is a part of the world

[02:19:15] Unless it's something like

[02:19:17] Sometimes small independent films kind of get put on shelves and then are released slowly

[02:19:24] So I have a couple like from this year, 2024

[02:19:27] That were made maybe two years ago but didn't get released until now

[02:19:31] Whether the strike or the pandemic

[02:19:33] Yeah, so In the Mouth of Madness is a film you'd love, Corinne

[02:19:37] It stars Sam Neal as an insurance guy

[02:19:41] And Sutter Kane is this huge horror author who goes missing

[02:19:45] So he goes to his town to find him

[02:19:49] And the town folk are subjects of the stories

[02:19:55] And it's, the movie's really fucked up

[02:19:57] I think it's John Carpenter's hidden masterpiece

[02:20:01] It is because there's just so many weird things in it

[02:20:06] And Sam Neal is great in it

[02:20:08] And it's pretty creepy

[02:20:10] Just a really well done movie

[02:20:13] He uses editing to warp the reality of film in such a masterful way

[02:20:18] Like and everything is heightened to the exact degree

[02:20:22] Oh god, yeah I didn't follow the same rules you did

[02:20:26] But it would have been on my list if I had

[02:20:28] Yeah it's just one of those movies I've always loved

[02:20:31] And my friend Brandon and I used to rent it all the time

[02:20:35] And I feel it's one of those films that slowly caught on in the horror community

[02:20:40] That should never have been ignored

[02:20:43] No, no

[02:20:44] But it's new line under Michael DeLuca

[02:20:49] Really giving a home to some filmmakers that had been kind of pushed off to the side

[02:20:55] And John Carpenter was definitely one of them

[02:20:59] And that this film is a master stroke of his

[02:21:03] That does a great job of sending up the popularity of Stephen King

[02:21:08] In this glorious little fashion here

[02:21:11] And this is a movie dedicated to the love of editing in a lot of ways

[02:21:14] Because of the way the third act plays out

[02:21:17] It's really twisted

[02:21:21] And Sam Neal I love him in Jurassic Park

[02:21:24] But I think I like him in this movie more just because it's such a stretch

[02:21:30] Yeah it's a really weird film too

[02:21:32] It's not overly gory, it's just a mood

[02:21:36] And it's really bizarre

[02:21:38] It's aggressive though

[02:21:39] It's not gory but it's aggressive

[02:21:42] Actually that shot when they're talking in the diner near the beginning

[02:21:45] And the guy who's gone mad reading the books

[02:21:47] Comes from the background to the front

[02:21:49] And then goes I have a race out of cane

[02:21:51] That shit's beautifully masterfully filmed

[02:21:55] And the very ending

[02:21:56] Oh my god

[02:21:57] Have you ever seen this movie Brad?

[02:22:00] Oh you should see it

[02:22:01] So when you say I would like it are you being facetious?

[02:22:04] A little

[02:22:07] I would recommend it for everybody because it is a horror film

[02:22:11] But it's not in your traditional horror movie

[02:22:14] It's really bizarre

[02:22:16] Because it takes a while for it to get going too

[02:22:20] Because it's really kind of a mystery at the beginning

[02:22:23] With Sam Neill trying to solve it

[02:22:25] And then really when it starts getting really fucked up

[02:22:27] I mean that guy at the beginning where he attacks him is weird

[02:22:31] But when he's driving to Hobbes End

[02:22:34] He's driving and he passes the same person over and over again

[02:22:38] Before he gets there

[02:22:39] And then

[02:22:41] It's a Twilight Zone episode

[02:22:42] It actually is a very good answer

[02:22:45] It's a Twilight Zone episode

[02:22:46] Yeah it's if Twilight Zone had a bigger budget and was more fucked up

[02:22:50] And yeah

[02:22:50] It's R rated but not for the reasons you'd think given that it's a horror movie by John Krug

[02:22:55] It's the R rating that I think a lot like Sinister

[02:23:00] Where it's R rating is because of the intensity

[02:23:02] It's not because there's something that's overly violent

[02:23:04] I mean there's some violence in it but

[02:23:06] The phrase is thematic content

[02:23:08] Yeah

[02:23:10] Because you know Sinister there's really not that much violence in it

[02:23:14] But it's the feeling of dread and the intent of the movie

[02:23:19] And I feel like this one is too

[02:23:21] Because there's like those really fucked up kids in it too

[02:23:24] And they run through the town

[02:23:26] It's weird

[02:23:27] It's a weird movie but it's brilliant

[02:23:29] Also Chuck Heston playing a character named Jackson Harglow

[02:23:34] And what could go wrong

[02:23:35] Exactly

[02:23:37] So yeah

[02:23:38] Yeah if you're looking for an interesting movie about a rider that goes missing

[02:23:42] And then it becomes a fucked up movie then yeah

[02:23:46] In the mouth of Madness

[02:23:47] I would love to know has Stephen King ever said what he thinks of in the mouth of Madness

[02:23:50] Or has he just ignored it

[02:23:52] That is the review I want out of this guy

[02:23:54] That's the review I want on Twitter right now

[02:23:57] Oh god

[02:23:58] Great movie

[02:24:00] Corinne, number four

[02:24:01] My number four is another musical animated fairy tale

[02:24:08] One, Daddy

[02:24:14] Nick

[02:24:14] As children

[02:24:17] Prince Derek and Princess Odette

[02:24:19] Weren't exactly the best of friends

[02:24:24] But as they grew up

[02:24:25] They began to see each other differently

[02:24:30] Then before their kingdoms could unite

[02:24:34] Odette was stolen away by an evil enchanter

[02:24:37] Dad

[02:24:39] That is mine

[02:24:42] Transforming her with a powerful spell

[02:24:46] Wherever you are

[02:24:47] I'm gonna find you

[02:24:48] The Swan Princess

[02:24:50] An exciting, delighting, magical musical fantasy

[02:24:55] Beauty and glamour

[02:24:58] And reading a match

[02:25:00] Princess it's all in parade

[02:25:03] Featuring the voices of John Cleese

[02:25:07] To the rescue Mademoiselle

[02:25:09] Sandy Duncan

[02:25:10] Queen coming through the hour

[02:25:14] Don't give me that look, Missy

[02:25:16] And Stephen Wright

[02:25:21] Odette the Swan

[02:25:22] And her faithful friends from the forest

[02:25:24] Are searching for Prince Derek

[02:25:27] To reveal the Swan's secret

[02:25:31] A spell that can only be broken

[02:25:33] By looking beyond her feathers

[02:25:35] To find the beauty inside

[02:25:37] Hello Derek

[02:25:39] Odette

[02:25:40] Come share a timeless tale of legendary love

[02:25:47] The Swan Princess

[02:25:49] An enchanting, animated adventure

[02:25:51] So my number four is The Swan Princess

[02:25:54] Which was another childhood classic of mine

[02:25:57] Classic?

[02:25:59] Oh my gosh Ryan

[02:26:00] I have seen this movie so many times

[02:26:02] I don't even think we owned it

[02:26:04] Which is weird

[02:26:05] We must have rented it all the time

[02:26:08] It was ejected into your brain

[02:26:09] It pretty much was

[02:26:11] So yes as you heard in the trailer

[02:26:14] It has a bunch of random people

[02:26:17] Like Jack Palance is pleased the villain

[02:26:19] I know and when they

[02:26:21] I heard his voice it sounded like he was speaking from a coffin

[02:26:24] I thought it was weird that in that title

[02:26:26] In that trailer he was saying

[02:26:27] Get me Tango and Cash

[02:26:30] John Cleese this is how I first knew who John Cleese was

[02:26:33] To give you an insight of how we view this

[02:26:35] As the trailers go on

[02:26:37] At one point Stephen Wright showed up as a turtle

[02:26:39] And we fucking lost it

[02:26:42] Y'all lost it, yeah

[02:26:45] So the story of The Swan Princess

[02:26:47] Is basically Swan Lake but without the ballet

[02:26:49] It's the same fairy tale

[02:26:55] 1931 poll

[02:26:58] The story of Swan Lake is that

[02:27:00] Odette and Derek are

[02:27:02] Betrothed to each other

[02:27:04] And Rothbart the evil sorcerer

[02:27:06] Kidnapped her turns her into a swan

[02:27:08] She's under an enchantment

[02:27:09] Where she can't turn back into a huban

[02:27:11] Unless she's like on this specific lake

[02:27:13] And there's a whole bunch of drama

[02:27:15] She ends up reconnecting with Derek

[02:27:17] And he tries to save her

[02:27:19] So it's a very beautiful story

[02:27:22] Music's

[02:27:23] But I like the animation

[02:27:25] I think the voice cast does a great job

[02:27:28] So

[02:27:28] Seems like for a film that New Line

[02:27:30] Was trying to put out

[02:27:31] It does try to go all out on its animation

[02:27:33] Doesn't look terrible

[02:27:34] It's just the problem is Disney exists

[02:27:37] Yeah, it's definitely trying to be a Disney movie

[02:27:41] But I don't care

[02:27:42] My three year old brain did not give a shit

[02:27:45] Which

[02:27:46] Mellow artist did the score for this movie?

[02:27:50] We were running low on entries

[02:27:53] Barry Manilow, Elton John

[02:27:55] Actually I think the music in this is really well done

[02:27:57] Not the songs but like the soundtrack

[02:28:00] The score

[02:28:01] It has good themes to it

[02:28:03] So Stephen Wright announced

[02:28:05] Each song like he does in Reservoir Dogs

[02:28:08] Yes, I know you guys will

[02:28:10] Hate me for saying it

[02:28:11] But anytime I see John Cleese

[02:28:12] And Monty Python or whatever

[02:28:15] Yeah, the guy from Swan Princess

[02:28:18] That's my frame of reference for him

[02:28:20] So

[02:28:20] That's gonna be the top of his obituary too

[02:28:24] So my number four, Swan Princess

[02:28:26] And I go, how was in that movie?

[02:28:31] Brad, your number three

[02:28:34] My number three is a repeat

[02:28:35] It's Star Trek Generations

[02:28:37] So thanks for that

[02:28:38] Yeah, well hey it's on both our list

[02:28:40] It is

[02:28:41] Yeah, I think it's the first Star Trek movie ever got to see in the theater

[02:28:48] Yeah, first Star Trek movie ever got to see in the theater

[02:28:50] And

[02:28:52] You know when it came out

[02:28:53] The sharing of screen time with Kirk and Picard together was a big deal

[02:28:59] But people didn't like the way Picard or Kirk went out

[02:29:04] You know after all the many

[02:29:08] Brushes with death he had in the show and other movies

[02:29:12] Just kind of fighting Soren on a bridge

[02:29:14] Felt a little lackluster

[02:29:16] How did you feel about it?

[02:29:17] I was kind of mixed, you know I get it

[02:29:19] Like I said

[02:29:21] I just defer to you because you're the big Star Trek guy

[02:29:23] So was this a big deal when this movie came out for you?

[02:29:26] This team up?

[02:29:27] Oh yeah

[02:29:28] But like I said the Kirk death part was also the big deal

[02:29:34] And like I said

[02:29:35] You're talking about a guy who like sparred with Khan

[02:29:37] And then this guy Soren gets him

[02:29:41] Yeah I guess

[02:29:41] He's also older at that point right?

[02:29:43] Yeah, that was the argument that I make because he's older

[02:29:47] He's not going to be his agile

[02:29:49] It's like that Star Wars movie nobody likes

[02:29:51] But narratively like as a character you want to see him fight his best nemesis

[02:29:57] Or something or succumb to something a little more

[02:30:00] You know it's also in the Nexus so like no one in his time

[02:30:03] They think he died on the Enterprise B

[02:30:06] And so again like those characters in that world think like

[02:30:09] Oh this guy who's been through so many adventures

[02:30:12] And so many of us just like got blown away on the Enterprise B

[02:30:15] Like during like a routine inaugural mission

[02:30:19] Like this game is kind of weak

[02:30:21] But the

[02:30:22] It needs to be more epic

[02:30:23] But his genuine death near the end speaks to Kirk

[02:30:29] The character of Kirk

[02:30:31] Being one who will take the hit

[02:30:34] Because it's the right thing to do

[02:30:36] And that in itself makes it a grand exit for him

[02:30:40] Regardless of who the villain is he's up against

[02:30:43] I would argue

[02:30:44] That it's more to the strength of Kirk as a character

[02:30:47] Than necessarily having him die at Khan's hands or something

[02:30:49] You wanted him to face his nemesis

[02:30:52] He should have been in Star Trek nemesis

[02:30:54] But cinematically

[02:30:56] Would have made that film more interesting

[02:30:59] Cinematically yeah

[02:31:01] Like you probably should have had like his own movie to do that

[02:31:03] Or something but you know he's just like a second banana in this movie

[02:31:07] You know it's a passing of the torch and all but like

[02:31:10] He's such an iconic Star Trek character

[02:31:12] Like the iconic Star Trek character

[02:31:14] But as Star Trek Generations is a movie for the next generation

[02:31:17] It's pretty good

[02:31:17] I think it's a really good transition from the show to the movies

[02:31:22] It's almost like not cinematic enough

[02:31:25] Like it's in this gray space where like

[02:31:27] Like a TV movie?

[02:31:28] We've been given a budget to like make a better episode

[02:31:32] So and I like how you can kind of see

[02:31:35] Like throughout the movie the characters are like slowly changing their uniforms

[02:31:38] To like the movie version and stuff

[02:31:40] And it advances some characters that we got left off with

[02:31:45] At the end of next gen

[02:31:47] With like data and using the emotion chip

[02:31:51] Like that was an interesting little thing

[02:31:52] That you didn't need to have a bunch of information going in

[02:31:55] If you're like a first time viewer

[02:31:58] Yeah like that whole emotion chip thing was just because Brent Spiner was so tired of playing data as data

[02:32:05] He wanted a little more freedom to

[02:32:07] You know since he wasn't going to be like on screen every couple weeks

[02:32:11] You know he wanted to have a better reason to play more

[02:32:14] I think it like diminished his character a little bit because

[02:32:20] You know part of his charm was that he was kind of like a Vulcan

[02:32:23] Where he's like trying to emulate human stuff

[02:32:26] So once you guys see him gets the emotion chip

[02:32:28] I mean his jokes in this movie like his he's the comic relief in the movie

[02:32:33] Because of it so that's great

[02:32:34] But yeah then also the Nexus itself is kind of like

[02:32:40] Like it's it's kind of like a I don't know a McGuffin

[02:32:43] That's kind of hard to articulate

[02:32:45] I think they do an okay job

[02:32:47] But yeah overall I think the movies fun

[02:32:50] And it's a good way to like bring those characters into like the feature film world

[02:32:55] And obviously like yeah the software for it gets a lot better

[02:32:58] Because again much like Street Fighter they're juggling like two generations of things and

[02:33:04] Yeah my number three is Star Trek Generations

[02:33:07] Zach number three

[02:33:09] My number three is the repeat it's clerks

[02:33:12] Um

[02:33:14] Oh wait that's Jackass

[02:33:18] Hi I'm Jason Muse welcome to Jackass

[02:33:22] Yeah no I grew up a Kevin Smith fan

[02:33:25] Um I actually got to this last

[02:33:28] Yeah I went I did a weird

[02:33:31] See I'm so old Zach that I saw Mallrats when it came out

[02:33:35] On theaters

[02:33:37] In theaters and then I went back and watched clerks

[02:33:41] Okay gotcha

[02:33:43] Well I'm young and have a vigour

[02:33:45] So I did not do it that way

[02:33:47] Um I actually watched J.N. Silent Bob strike back first

[02:33:51] And then I think I did Mallrats second

[02:33:55] And Dogma then chasing Amy and then clerks

[02:33:57] I still quote just like Winnie the Pooh from J.N. Silent Bob strike back all the time

[02:34:02] Yeah that movie is great

[02:34:04] Um and this was all before it was almost like gearing up for clerks too

[02:34:09] Cause my fandom like my appreciation for Kevin Smith kind of timed around that

[02:34:14] Um but um I remember watching it for the first time

[02:34:18] And it was this is gonna sound dumb but hear me out cause with the exception of Schindler's list

[02:34:23] There weren't a lot of black and white films out there that had this kind of intense content

[02:34:29] And um Schindler's list is obviously doing something completely different with its black and white footage

[02:34:35] Um so with clerks uh it was just weird to watch a format that I've watched comedies in in the past

[02:34:43] And then all of a sudden they're using language that was like

[02:34:46] I learned new words out of this movie like jizmapper

[02:34:50] Um so the fact that it was it broke my high school brain

[02:34:56] Uh and lovingly so um but I also think that one of the reasons that I can put it this high up on the list is

[02:35:05] I'm always upset when uh Kevin Smith tends to talk down about the visual look of his films

[02:35:13] Cause I don't think he gives himself enough credit

[02:35:16] To my mind especially in researching Jack Benny's filmography and learning from other scholars like Steven Weiner about this

[02:35:24] Comedy is always best in the reactive sense um a close-up doesn't always guarantee it's gonna be funny

[02:35:30] You need to watch people interacting with each other

[02:35:32] This is an entire movie of reactions uh and people reacting to anything from the most mundane thing to the most like outrageous

[02:35:44] And I think he handles those two shots so masterfully that you don't need to move the camera to get across what you're trying to get across

[02:35:53] The intensity is from your words and you have placed that camera exactly where it needs to be

[02:35:58] Um I don't think that there's a visual stiltness to this film

[02:36:03] And this camera and the camera does move when they get out of the car after the funeral and do the whole her bucket body fell out

[02:36:09] Like that movie that camera is on on handheld walking around them

[02:36:14] Um I think again it's just a testament to Kevin Smith is a good filmmaker

[02:36:19] And I wish he would give himself more credit for being that and not just you know a guy who writes very well

[02:36:25] And just happens to be able to direct his own stuff like no you you are a filmmaker you understand film language

[02:36:30] That's a key asset that has uh benefited comedy teams and comedy groups across generations

[02:36:39] And you know Mark's brothers are Abbott and Costello you use the language that happened to also work for the budget you had

[02:36:47] And you made something masterful out of it and I do think that clerks is an important landmark film in 1994

[02:36:55] Removing myself from my appreciation of the man and his work it's a landmark film because it does tell everybody out there who wants to tell the story they want to tell

[02:37:05] Make a movie get with your friends make a movie you can do it it can be done

[02:37:12] And I haven't expressed my opinions about the ending of clerks 3 I personally am still wrestling with the fact of what happens at the end of that movie

[02:37:20] But I'm very glad that this movie does not end the way it was originally going to end

[02:37:25] I think Bob, Bob Hawk who was working who did the was kind of consulting him on the festival circuit and whatnot just like you can't just kill your main guy in such an abrupt way after all the movie we've just experienced

[02:37:40] And so I think that this movie ends perfectly on the line you're closed and queuing that solo asylum song it's masterful

[02:37:47] It's a movie that I wish I could make in a lot of ways to be honest like I wish I could make a movie that smart and that funny with that same aesthetic and get away with it

[02:37:56] And have the give somebody else the same impact that I felt when I first saw it so yeah it's a masterclass of independent film

[02:38:06] Yeah, it's one of my claim of fame is seeing mall rats in the theaters. My friend Joe loved clerks. I never even saw clerks and he said we should go see mall rats and I was like all right

[02:38:17] I was 14 when mall rats came out didn't have like but it also clerks even though it was picked up by by Miramax and given her theatrical release

[02:38:26] I don't think it was as wide as a

[02:38:28] No, no because I because I saw mall rats and then it was a couple

[02:38:37] Yeah, right there buddy

[02:38:40] Okay

[02:38:43] Yeah, and I I went to a cast party the

[02:38:49] 96 was my first year. I think I did theater and I was just tech for

[02:38:56] I remember but that's when I saw clerks so I saw mall rats and then I got the VHS of mall rats because I loved it so much and then I

[02:39:05] Eventually saw clerks at a cast party from my friend Joe is he never saw clerks watch clerks too and that's how not clerks too but clerks as well

[02:39:14] But yeah, that's how so my order was actually the right order because mall rats takes place technically before clerks

[02:39:21] So I'm a view askew fuck

[02:39:22] I'm backward. I watched them in literal reverse or sideways

[02:39:27] It's really amazing that I managed to understand that this was a it's like saying to me

[02:39:32] You know what? I have watched all of the Marvel cinematic universe movies out of order and out of phases

[02:39:39] Wait, wait Thanos was dead here, but now he's alive at the end of the first adventures

[02:39:46] But yeah number three clerks my number three is also a repeat it is West Cravens new nightmare

[02:39:53] The first nightmare in Elm Street is a horror classic and Freddy Krueger became a character that everyone was scared of

[02:40:01] Part two he's actually pretty mean in

[02:40:04] That I actually think that movies better than people give it credit for oh, I agree. Yeah part three is really good

[02:40:11] It's masterful expansion of the um four five and six are not in fact

[02:40:17] I think six is a piece of shit

[02:40:19] And what they did is they took Freddy and they kind of neutered him and they made him slapsticky

[02:40:25] They made him a comedian which is yeah really weird for the character that he started off

[02:40:30] Well, I mean it's always weird to me and I get that he became super popular because Robert England's personality comes through

[02:40:37] But he's also a child murderer and so you're like, I don't know if I it's like, you know rooting for Jason or something

[02:40:44] And I've always been a Jason guy so I you know Freddy to me never really connected besides those first few movies because

[02:40:50] Those movies were I was older when I saw them obviously because Elm Street's from 84

[02:40:56] But this one I also saw in theaters and

[02:41:00] Yeah, I know I'm really cool. You know you're headed your time. Yeah

[02:41:05] I was from a divorced family and my dad used to let me take me to movies and I could watch anything

[02:41:10] I wanted hold on here's 500 tissues

[02:41:14] My dad was always cool because I saw a T2 in theaters as well and that you know is an R rated movie

[02:41:20] But this one I remember that Freddy was scary again and as you get older you appreciate

[02:41:29] How the film plays that it takes place in the real world and West Craven is really good in this movie as himself

[02:41:36] His interaction with with Heather Langing camp while he's painting that really

[02:41:43] Weird picture of Freddy Krueger is so good

[02:41:48] So Corinne that the story is is that nine right Elm Street is a movie but through I don't know through time

[02:41:57] It's actually spawned a real demon and it's taken the shape of Freddy Krueger

[02:42:01] And he comes into the real world and they stop making the movie because they stopped making them and it and so

[02:42:08] All the actors from the first nine right Elm Street sands Johnny Depp

[02:42:13] Are in it and they play themselves inside a movie. That's about a movie. It's fucking brilliant and

[02:42:21] Yeah, the trailer look kind of interesting. Yeah, that's literally Heather Langing camp plays herself

[02:42:27] as she's gearing up to be in Nightmare on Elm Street again and

[02:42:32] Because the Freddy in this isn't actually Freddy he looks way different. He's an ancient evil

[02:42:37] Yeah happens to love the form of Freddy most. Yeah, so it's so he even like has like a trench coat now and

[02:42:45] It's pretty his gloves badass and I love like the like the skeleton hand and never sleep again

[02:42:51] They kind of refer to it as more German expressionism which is interesting because that does give off. Oh, yeah

[02:42:56] European look for sure. Yeah, so I've always loved this movie. I think

[02:43:01] I mean, it's violent and and Freddy scary in it and the way he torments

[02:43:08] Heather Langing Camp's son is awesome

[02:43:12] Yeah, and even the opening scene where that her husband dies is always

[02:43:17] Like it is really well shot. It's chaotic. Yeah, so I've always loved this movie

[02:43:22] I think it's the second best Nightmare on Elm Street film

[02:43:26] And I will I will point to one thing I didn't bring up earlier

[02:43:29] But there's a very visceral image in that movie pretty early on when they're on the talk show and

[02:43:35] Freddy does come out and it's like, huh, just a joke gotcha gotcha

[02:43:38] but then he goes to the back of Freddy and he's doing you're all my children now and it shows all the other people

[02:43:44] Reacting like this slow-mo shot of Freddy on on the spotlight is so like

[02:43:51] It's impactful. Yeah, it's a very impact

[02:43:53] And you know the whole point of the film is West Craven is saying you're making this monster a

[02:43:59] Hero you're making this monster acceptable and he shouldn't be and it's it's a brilliant film. It's way ahead of its time

[02:44:08] Yeah, it's way ahead of its time. It's I again. It's the only

[02:44:12] reason why anybody in at in 95 at that time when they were trying to get the screen made

[02:44:18] Would point to West Craven and say this guy. This is the guy who can do it

[02:44:22] Yeah, but you know the big difference is and I think screams a masterpiece

[02:44:26] But I think one of the big differences is new nightmare is not funny. No, it's it is straight

[02:44:34] psychological and

[02:44:37] There is a funny line and by funny line, I mean the entire performance of Bob Shay. Oh

[02:44:45] Come on Heather kids love horror

[02:44:47] Yeah, but yeah, what's Craven's new nightmare Corinne number three my number three is also a Christmas movie

[02:45:05] He thinks you're Santa Claus

[02:45:14] You know what I know

[02:45:28] I move for a long time

[02:45:31] He's not real

[02:45:33] Says who?

[02:45:35] My mom. I am the parents you are the

[02:45:40] Friendly guy down the hall they say that seeing is

[02:45:45] believing

[02:45:46] But the truth is the world is held together by things you can't see

[02:45:53] There really has to be something you want for Christmas

[02:45:57] House brother and a dad. That's all I ever want

[02:46:08] If you really said a cause you can get it for me

[02:46:15] It's an engagement ring

[02:46:17] if

[02:46:17] You can't accept anything

[02:46:20] faith

[02:46:21] And your doom for life

[02:46:23] Dominated by doubt she's deaf

[02:46:27] You don't have to talk to her. She just wanted to see you

[02:46:30] you

[02:46:30] a very

[02:46:34] beautiful

[02:46:36] young lady

[02:46:38] If I could make you believe and there'd be some hope for me I can't

[02:46:43] I'm finished. I want this man declared

[02:46:47] insane

[02:46:47] This is about a man who has had something very wrong done to him. I

[02:46:54] Want you to help him together?

[02:46:56] We're gonna prove that there is a Santa Claus and that you're him

[02:47:01] I'm ready guys

[02:47:02] Do you believe that you are Santa Claus? Yes, of course

[02:47:08] I'd like the court to see mr. Kringle make the reindeer fly the only flies on Christmas Eve

[02:47:14] The

[02:47:18] Do you believe in Santa Claus?

[02:47:21] If this court finds that mr. Kringle is not who says he is and I would ask the court to judge which is worse a lie

[02:47:30] That draws a smile

[02:47:32] Or a truth

[02:47:35] That draws a tear this season

[02:47:38] 20th century Fox Richard Attenborough

[02:47:41] Elizabeth Perkins Dylan McDermott and Mrs. Doufire's Mara Wilson

[02:47:47] Present you with the most precious gift of all

[02:47:51] Something to believe in

[02:47:56] miracle on 34th Street

[02:47:59] Directed by Les Mayfield

[02:48:02] So my number three is the remake of miracle on 34th Street

[02:48:07] With Mara Wilson and Richard Attenborough, which as I told these guys during the trailer. This is the movie

[02:48:13] I know him from not Jurassic Park

[02:48:16] We each have our childhood up

[02:48:18] We each have a way that we remember Richard Attenborough best mine is the fact that he directed chaplain

[02:48:25] But and you know what I'll show you

[02:48:30] That's a Jurassic Park reference I

[02:48:33] I

[02:48:34] Rewatch this for Christmas a couple years ago. It's actually a really well-made movie just the whole cast is

[02:48:40] You know very lovable very endearing

[02:48:43] Sometimes it's okay to watch like feel good movies. Yeah, well especially around the holidays and

[02:48:48] That's what I watch the whole like last third of the movie the courtroom drama is actually really well done

[02:48:55] And I like I like the ending spoilers because you know

[02:49:00] Is he Santa? Yeah

[02:49:02] Yeah, okay, I just didn't know Brian. I'm in 1947 version

[02:49:08] Well, just how it ends with them going to the house and how you know Santa

[02:49:13] Secretly arranges the marriage between the two

[02:49:16] adults

[02:49:19] Secretly arranges a marriage

[02:49:21] Like they both go to the church and they're like what are we doing here? And they're like you're getting married like oh

[02:49:27] Okay

[02:49:28] And then it ends up that you know what the little girl wanted for Christmas was she wanted a dad and a baby brother and a house

[02:49:35] And so do out of the three at least, you know

[02:49:38] I love that you adore this film because I think it is very rare where a film from Golden Age Hollywood gets remade and

[02:49:48] It's just as powerful and impactful as the original one that it spawned

[02:49:52] You can't say that for the remake of love story that they did with Warren Beatty

[02:49:58] But um, I do think that what I what I love about this

[02:50:04] Property and how it's been reused is that they each found the perfect Santa Claus or Chris Kringle as it were to

[02:50:12] Deal with and in 47 it was Edmund Gwen and in this one. That's Richard Ambaro and they are

[02:50:17] Gentlemen who are perfectly fitted for that role at the exact time it's needed

[02:50:23] And the fact that John Hughes and George Seton the original writer and director of the film

[02:50:28] Share a screen credit shows that John Hughes knows he's not gonna mess with this too much

[02:50:32] He can't he can't or he'll lose the magic of what made that original property so beloved

[02:50:39] I've seen the original. It's definitely not bad

[02:50:41] Like it's a very well-made movie, but I like this one better and that's totally valid that it really is valid

[02:50:46] It is one of those few times like where

[02:50:49] The remake is just as acceptable an answer from a from an overall context from like most fandoms because I've never heard anybody

[02:50:56] Say they don't like this version. Yeah an interesting, you know, because this is set in the 90s

[02:51:01] Obviously it's modern day for the time but everybody dresses like it's the 50s

[02:51:07] They don't have like the outlandish like neon and all the you know, everything's very toned down

[02:51:11] How do you think of the 90s as neon?

[02:51:14] Just a lot of you know bright colors. Joel Schumacher mess with her brain

[02:51:18] I would say the 90s were all about black and

[02:51:22] I did think I I do I will say I do you have to remember I was a child in the

[02:51:26] I know obviously you don't remember the 90s. We do I

[02:51:29] I will say it's very weird at that one scene where Richard Attenborough gets a skateboard and goes shred tackler

[02:51:38] And poochie came out

[02:51:41] I'll have to go back to my planet now

[02:51:43] Everybody's gonna keep asking where's Chris crinkle? Where's Chris crinkle? Where's Chris crinkle?

[02:51:48] Like Mara Wilson was probably three or four years older than me in this movie and she's wearing

[02:51:54] Yes, seven or eight probably. Yeah, and she's wearing stuff that would be more of like the 50s time frame than the stuff that I would have been wearing in the 90s

[02:52:03] It's almost like it's a never time like where it's like it's every time and no time all at once

[02:52:08] Like because there's enough modern intricacies to make you aware what this is

[02:52:12] But like they have flashing billboards and stuff

[02:52:14] They have modern cars, but it's just the wardrobe choices are and again that skateboarding dog

[02:52:20] Really really weird choice for that movie

[02:52:22] So my number three miracle on 34th street. Very nice. Very cool brad

[02:52:28] numero dos

[02:52:29] Another repeat. It's the Shawshank redemption. Wow

[02:52:33] Yeah, usually you don't like those sappy movies and stuff up this high

[02:52:37] Or movies about people in the 40s that move into people in the 60s

[02:52:41] Yeah, usually this is reserved for your like psycho gore man's or you know father's day my number twos

[02:52:47] these are

[02:52:49] I don't know what to expect from you. You have these weird movies in front of the lion king

[02:52:53] I don't know what to expect anymore. Did John Claude may damn not release any more movies in 94

[02:53:00] No more splits on the washing machine

[02:53:03] They're all lost. We do not make fun of the splits on the washing machine. That is an intricate part of the story

[02:53:08] jealous totes

[02:53:09] Um, so yeah, so my number two is the Shawshank redemption a movie where I can just put on and just get sucked into it

[02:53:16] And lose track of time and what i'm doing

[02:53:19] That's always a good hallmark of a movie that's almost three hours long. Okay. I can watch all of this again

[02:53:23] No wonder tbs had this on all the time. Yeah, it's it's very much the ultimate. Oh, this is on

[02:53:29] Well, there goes my afternoon. See, I think a tbs

[02:53:31] I well, I guess it was more tnt

[02:53:33] But you know like fast in the furious that was the one that was always on

[02:53:36] Well, that's a valid one. Well, how do you think that that franchise has continued to exist?

[02:53:41] I don't know. Yeah, but I mean Shawshank redemption is very different in quality from

[02:53:47] Fast in the furious, but again, it's it's the way it's written. It really subverts itself in them

[02:53:54] Yeah, just the twists and turns and like just remembering the tragic like

[02:53:58] The warden

[02:54:00] The hypocrisy of the warden set like is so frustrating

[02:54:04] Um, and then like before I watched the last night. I sort of got in my head that like Andy did do the murder

[02:54:10] Um, and then like watching I was like last night was pretty definitive that he wasn't

[02:54:15] The murder but like he's just like in a really

[02:54:18] Like coincidental circumstance thing. Um, so that was like a good

[02:54:23] Yeah revisiting and then just um

[02:54:26] The dialogue is really strong. Um, yeah

[02:54:30] The thing that always gets me is the shoes

[02:54:33] Nobody noticed the shoes. Yeah, that's a little bit of a stretch

[02:54:36] I mean even just like doesn't it even like make like a noise when he walks across the

[02:54:41] Well, also how did he like pin the poster back on the wall after he was like inside the hole?

[02:54:45] You know, so like that like you can't turn around

[02:54:49] Um, I mean, what is it only taped at the top not the bottom because that would help

[02:54:53] Well, if it had to be taped at the bottom, it would be like flapping around and people would notice

[02:54:57] Yeah

[02:54:58] It's a really good scene where people like hey, Andy. What are you doing there? Looks like your poster's gone magic

[02:55:05] Um

[02:55:07] Yeah, just like one of the all-time greats just

[02:55:09] solid

[02:55:11] gets you stuck

[02:55:11] Very emotional movie. Yeah

[02:55:15] Mr. Krabs is a piece of shit

[02:55:19] Uh, Zach number two my number two is a repeat it is Quentin Tarantino's pulp fiction

[02:55:24] Um, so Ryan you were talking about the fact that the

[02:55:29] Adoration of this film has been so overplayed

[02:55:31] That it has become like it's so shoved in your face pop culture wise

[02:55:37] um

[02:55:38] I love other quentin tarantino movies more than this

[02:55:42] um as it so happens though, this is the year 1994

[02:55:46] and

[02:55:47] It would always be nearing the top of my list

[02:55:51] Regardless of how much has been overplayed

[02:55:54] I do

[02:55:56] remember how impactful it felt to watch this film for the first time

[02:56:01] And have my head blown back by not just the storytelling structure, but the yeah

[02:56:06] Yeah, I remember John John Travolta literally popped out of the screen and shot me like Marvin. That's how it happened

[02:56:12] um

[02:56:15] Just from the storytelling structure alone on down to the dialogue. Um, it was just

[02:56:21] It it captured my attention

[02:56:22] Similarly to how clerks did where it's just like I'd never seen anything like that before and I had watched kill bill

[02:56:29] volume one and two before this

[02:56:32] But I didn't even fully realize the true impact of quentin tarantino

[02:56:36] Until seeing this movie and then I got to Jackie brown afterward and then that one won my heart a little more

[02:56:42] but

[02:56:43] This film is immensely watchable if a television station was allowed to play it on a loop

[02:56:49] Like tnt without editing

[02:56:52] Mercilessly, I think I would probably get sucked into this film as well. Um, and I do think that

[02:56:59] the uh

[02:57:01] It's it's such a wonderful character driven film

[02:57:06] that

[02:57:07] I I get wrapped up in one different character each time I watch it like sometimes I'm invested in

[02:57:13] Bruce willis his character and only give a shit about his side of this

[02:57:16] His his version of events throughout the movie and then there's times where I'm more focused on jewels or Vincent

[02:57:23] Like sometimes one viewing will just affect my ability to

[02:57:27] grasp the film and it's beautiful because there is such a

[02:57:31] Mirage of a beautiful barrage of

[02:57:35] interesting people to watch

[02:57:37] Unfold into this la crime

[02:57:40] la crime world, uh where there's everything from glowing briefcases on down to

[02:57:47] discussions of mcdonald's uh in other countries like it's

[02:57:51] It's masterful and I think it's also great to look at from a visual acumen standpoint of

[02:57:56] how

[02:57:57] we follow these characters because

[02:57:59] Dialogue scenes can be difficult

[02:58:01] to make interesting

[02:58:03] And if you don't have kevin smith's words like that or you think or even if you don't have quentin tarantino's words

[02:58:08] How do you make a conversation seen interesting?

[02:58:10] I will say as sort of a counter to the argument that I made for clerks

[02:58:14] Quentin Tarantino is masterful at shooting dialogue

[02:58:17] It's one of the reasons why when once upon a time in hollywood came out

[02:58:21] I was like, oh, I forgot how much I missed this kind of version of quentin tarantino because he is really good at a conversation

[02:58:26] And how it can play out

[02:58:29] Uh and I and I think that that soundtrack will eternally be burned into my memory

[02:58:35] to the point where I can't think of

[02:58:38] Of any song from that film and think of it in any other context

[02:58:43] It's it's such a masterful assemblage. Like I think of

[02:58:47] jungle boogie

[02:58:48] I don't think of uh like any other film that

[02:58:50] Film that used it during my childhood like an animated film or whatever. I just think of pulp fiction

[02:58:57] So yeah, my number two is pulp fiction. It's it's it is up there for a reason. It's glorious

[02:59:05] um also

[02:59:08] Quentin Tarantino's role in the movie as jimmy

[02:59:12] uh

[02:59:14] That scene

[02:59:16] is

[02:59:18] Masterfully done where he just berates the shit out of

[02:59:22] jules and vinson

[02:59:24] And I love as it follows when they get the wolf in there and they clean up the car and clean up everything

[02:59:30] And they put the t-shirts on them and they go. What do they what do they look like to you jimmy dorks?

[02:59:35] They look like dorks

[02:59:39] This is this great stuff in it. Anyway, my number two and my girlfriend still never seen the movie

[02:59:43] So I am I'm so excited to finally show her the movie when she

[02:59:48] Has the mood to watch it

[02:59:50] It's always you know scary because there's an episode of how I met your mother when ted shows

[02:59:55] robin star wars and she doesn't like it and he's devastated

[03:00:00] So you never know

[03:00:01] I don't think i'm going to

[03:00:03] Tank my relationship on the basis of her not liking

[03:00:06] Oh, no, i'm just saying just you know now if she didn't like 2004 is the lady killers then we'd be talking about a different situation

[03:00:14] Uh my number two is a repeat. It's one of my favorite short snager films. It is true lies

[03:00:20] um

[03:00:21] It's a film that I think is

[03:00:24] A lot of fun

[03:00:27] You know arnold

[03:00:29] Has a way of commanding the screen and just being really fun and relatable even though he's

[03:00:35] Extremely like ripped and has that thick accent, but you always are on board with him

[03:00:41] And jamie lee curtis is the perfect foil

[03:00:44] for him in that

[03:00:45] you know

[03:00:47] Zach didn't touch on it, but there's a subplot

[03:00:50] throughout the whole film that's never even mentioned in the trailer of jamie lee curtis

[03:00:57] Is seeing bill paxton who pretends that he's

[03:01:00] Her husband so what his her husband actually does when he's just used car salesman

[03:01:06] But she wants the dangerous life because she thinks her husband harry is so boring

[03:01:11] and

[03:01:12] That's how she kind of gets sucked into this espionage world and

[03:01:16] Uh, it's just a lot of fun. The movie's just full of one-liners. Um, you know my favorite is always

[03:01:24] You know

[03:01:25] She he gets hit with his truth serum and jamie lee curtis asks if he's ever killed anyone and he said yes, but they were all bad

[03:01:32] and um

[03:01:34] Yeah, it's just it's classic arnold. It's him at like peak. It's james cameron

[03:01:39] Shooting action like only he can

[03:01:42] Uh, you know the one thing I I will say about james cameron is he knows how to make action cool

[03:01:49] And sometimes his characters aren't always the best developed

[03:01:52] But he still knows how to make things look cool and

[03:01:56] He'll always be able to do that for me

[03:01:59] Even the avatar movies are like I'm not really into them. There's still moments in avatar movies where

[03:02:04] My mind says okay, he still can make things look cool

[03:02:07] Right

[03:02:08] And I do think that there there's something masterful about true lies is that this is one of the last times where he's working with

[03:02:15] A bunch of practical stuff and maybe minimal cg

[03:02:19] Um because like I think it's really mostly stuff near the end of the film where he goes into a computer realm for the most part

[03:02:25] Um, I could be wrong. I have not watched any behind the scenes documentary goes up to a certain point

[03:02:31] There wasn't any uh, no, it's was there a future at at all? Oh, yeah

[03:02:36] No on the 4k they have a oh yeah, but that's what I'm saying until now we haven't had it now

[03:02:41] We do have something

[03:02:42] He guys have sold me on it. I want to watch it now. You should I mean brad's not a big fan

[03:02:46] Why aren't you a big fan of it?

[03:02:50] I think some of the some of it's gross

[03:02:53] Like the part where uh, he and tom artel are gaslighting his wife

[03:02:56] That's not good tom artels tom artel's

[03:03:00] Dialogue in some of like the car scenes is a little

[03:03:03] icky

[03:03:05] Yeah, but see I you can't judge movies and things like that anymore because if you did then you'd go back when you're in

[03:03:10] 1994

[03:03:11] So I shouldn't have said stuff like that

[03:03:13] And I'm able to separate the two and also I think that he's trying to make his

[03:03:17] Wife have fun and I I don't think

[03:03:20] Well, he saw it like a couple years ago. I didn't see it in 1994 like you guys so even if I saw it

[03:03:25] I don't have a nostalgia of it that you do no even if I saw it now

[03:03:28] I I forgive stuff like that because isn't this movie mr. And Mrs. Smith in a way

[03:03:33] Pretty much instead of like the remake

[03:03:36] About the original now

[03:03:38] So the wife getting to like do cool action stuff. She's just obsessed with like a guy

[03:03:43] And yeah

[03:03:45] It's there's there are decisions in there that you would definitely not want to make today

[03:03:49] And like if I was making a film like that, I certainly wouldn't want to um, so I totally understand

[03:03:53] I don't know. I got I think we focus too much on trying to be

[03:03:58] Um pc and not enjoying things that uh, we lose sight of what's fun and it's okay

[03:04:04] But it's okay. You feel that way. I would never judge anybody for it

[03:04:07] They're similar issues though with clerks though, and I wouldn't want to change a frame of clerks. Yeah

[03:04:12] Well, I'll watch it and report should yeah

[03:04:14] But cameras always got like I don't know icky dialogue in all of his movies. So it's it's not just like

[03:04:19] Maybe pc about it. He's certainly not quentin tarantino or kevin smith as a writer. That's for sure

[03:04:24] No, he's an obtain him. He's very much more of

[03:04:28] Like he's that guy who like wants to be like really clever with like jokes

[03:04:31] But like can't quite get across the line with it

[03:04:34] Yeah, sometimes I agree

[03:04:37] Terminator 2 is the one time where he hit well

[03:04:40] I don't think anybody's gonna question that

[03:04:45] But true lies is fun

[03:04:52] You know in Eliza douce coups in and she's very young and she goes on to you know be faith and buffy

[03:04:57] I try to remember like in that like I think it was the recent avatar. There's like some line of dialogue

[03:05:01] That was just like

[03:05:01] It wasn't like a pc thing. It was just like that's just a clunky line in general

[03:05:06] Well, no, he definitely if he doesn't have a writer helping him. It's it's usually bad. Yeah bad

[03:05:11] I don't hate aliens

[03:05:13] But bill paxton's dialogue and aliens is only saved by the fact that bill paxton's giving the performance

[03:05:19] Yeah, but again if you

[03:05:22] In my opinion that alien is aliens isn't built on the dialogue. It's built on what the movie is

[03:05:28] Oh, yeah, no, yeah, you know, uh, because there's the my least favorite line and aliens is wit newt. She's like

[03:05:33] What the fuck is the line they come out at night?

[03:05:36] Yeah, mostly and that girl's

[03:05:38] English accent changes throughout the film sometimes she has it sometimes she doesn't yeah

[03:05:43] It's like jack penny and charlie zan where it's just like what the pick a link

[03:05:48] But yeah, I think it's a fun action movie and um, yeah

[03:05:53] Uh, korean number two

[03:05:55] So i'm assuming that we don't have any more trailers after this one

[03:06:02] Okay, so i'm glad we saved this one. This trailer is gonna be the last one because oh my gosh, I watched this trailer a lot

[03:06:11] Because it was on a certain vhs that we will talk about later, but

[03:06:15] Yeah, this is a great movie one of my favorite sports movies of all time and

[03:06:21] Well spoilers, this is it

[03:06:24] dad um

[03:06:25] When we're gonna be a family again, let's say when the angels win the pennant

[03:06:29] Williams and norton collide and the catch is blown probably they're bad

[03:06:34] I can't win with these guys

[03:06:36] Nobody can't for anyone who has dared to dream god. Maybe you could help him win a little

[03:06:43] And everyone with the courage to believe

[03:06:46] How do you do that comes angels in the outfield no one can see me or hear me but you do you

[03:06:53] Believe in angels. I believe in miraculous things happening two angels came out of the sky and they picked up at williams great a psycho kid

[03:07:02] I could feel some added power coming from somewhere. There must have been those chili dogs. I ate before

[03:07:06] They seem kind of signal i'll go like that. Okay, we do that. That's fine

[03:07:20] The kid sees angels you can call it angels

[03:07:24] You can call it faith

[03:07:27] You can call it whatever you like

[03:07:29] They gave the world something to believe in i got nothing left that angel with you right now

[03:07:42] Even though you can't see us

[03:07:44] Just watching

[03:07:49] Disney's angels in the outfield

[03:07:53] So my number two is angels in the outfield

[03:07:56] Um fantastic movie. I rewatched it last night and it holds up pretty well

[03:08:03] It's actually well aside from the baseball bits where you know all the players suck

[03:08:09] It's actually kind of dark

[03:08:11] The whole bit about like roger and he lives in a foster home and his dad just

[03:08:16] Doesn't want to be a dad at all and gives up parental rights and like I think they had to go over the top with the comedy in the

[03:08:24] Baseball field scenes because of how dark the rest of the movie is and how or just like how heavy

[03:08:29] You know it's a very heavy subject matter like the scene where roger goes to court

[03:08:33] And his dad gives up his parental rights and basically just leaves without saying a word

[03:08:37] Just like you know goodbye kid. Like that's it. Like that's all his dad says to him before he leaves his life forever

[03:08:43] Fuck you. I love my motorcycle more

[03:08:47] Come on son

[03:08:50] But yeah, it's actually really heavy scene watching that scene in the trailer where he's like dad

[03:08:55] Where are we gonna be a family again? Let's see when the ages win the pennant

[03:08:59] And now the older looking at that. I'm like you piece of fucking shit

[03:09:04] Yeah as a kid because again, I'm watching this one. I'm like, I don't know four or five years old

[03:09:08] Whatever. I didn't realize he was being sarcastic. I know when I saw the trailer as a kid

[03:09:13] I was like, oh my god

[03:09:14] It is going to be a reunion of sorts and it's going to be magical and then that dark part hits words

[03:09:18] It's like, oh, oh your dad can choose to not love you. What?

[03:09:23] Yeah, it

[03:09:25] It's a really well done movie and

[03:09:28] You guys are making fun of the angels showing up to help the baseball team

[03:09:31] The real mission was to help roger get a family. Okay

[03:09:37] That's the whole point of the movie. Oh, yeah, that makes it a better movie

[03:09:40] Yeah, because danie lovers

[03:09:42] George nox who is an asshole at the very beginning by the way like

[03:09:47] He's two games away from retirement

[03:09:50] The predator is in fucking la you'd be grumpy too

[03:09:55] I just don't understand. I gotta deal with this loose candy cup

[03:09:59] I gotta deal with these predators and now there's angels in my goddamn outfield

[03:10:05] You guys harp on like the angel mechanics and stuff

[03:10:08] My real problem is the owner because George nox gets into a fight with one of his players on the field

[03:10:14] Doreen a game

[03:10:16] Then goes into the locker room destroys a bunch of shit and berates the other players

[03:10:20] And then gets into a fight with like the the voice of the angels guy in a television interview

[03:10:28] And the owner's like, oh, yeah, no worries. Like it's all good. You're you're fine

[03:10:31] Just keep doing what you're doing

[03:10:33] We should take those plot elements and put it into money balls

[03:10:35] But then when they're like one win away from the pennant and he's like, oh, yeah

[03:10:39] There might be angels in the outfield which everybody has been watching the same games

[03:10:43] They've all seen the same crazy shit

[03:10:46] And this is like, I mean the best explanation anybody has for what's going on and he's like, no, no

[03:10:51] You need to you're gonna be in the loony bin unless you like, you know

[03:10:54] Submit a statement to the press or I'm gonna fire you or whatever. It's it's just so weird

[03:10:59] Like why would he flip on a two-pins like that?

[03:11:01] And also that kind of is literally cribbing the literal third act of the movie

[03:11:06] Oh god in such a strange way

[03:11:09] Like you but you better state to the press that there is no god and he doesn't exist like what?

[03:11:15] This is a plot point

[03:11:17] But I I the star power in this movie is insane

[03:11:20] Oh, yeah

[03:11:20] A lot of former academy award or previous academy award winners at the time future academy award winners, you know

[03:11:27] Danny Levered Tony Danza and Christopher Lord were like the build stars

[03:11:31] Then you got Matthew McConaughey and adrian brody are in it

[03:11:35] Joseph Gordon Levin plays the main kid

[03:11:38] so

[03:11:39] A lot of up and coming stars in this movie too. I remember the kid liking the movie like so, yeah

[03:11:44] I I totally understand why it would be on your list from that nostalgia second

[03:11:47] You know, it's my dad like baseball stuff and we like disney

[03:11:51] So, you know realistically the owner like is dealing with players or probably like drug abusers domestic

[03:11:57] violent offenders and yeah a guy yelling and knocking shit around the locker room is probably low on the list of fireball fences

[03:12:05] And this is la so or anaheim. So

[03:12:10] Yeah, there is bigger problems technically that the judge should be having on his docket

[03:12:14] And it's 94

[03:12:17] There was some stuff going on in the 90s and I'm just saying he gives the manager a lot of leeway for virtually no reason

[03:12:26] Considering that the team is also really garbage if he fires the music

[03:12:30] He's got to like write a new contract and do a new coach search

[03:12:32] Just way more hassle. Yeah, just just keep till the end of the year

[03:12:36] We'll write out the contract if the team was winning and he was having behavioral problems

[03:12:39] That's one thing but the team is like abysmal and he's yeah

[03:12:44] so

[03:12:45] Anyway, my number two is angels in the art field, which is a fantastic movie

[03:12:52] Sure rewatch it. It's on disney plus now

[03:12:55] Because it wasn't for a long time for some reason. I got more important things to watch last night

[03:12:59] I watched billy the kid versus dracula. So

[03:13:04] Brad your number one film

[03:13:07] My number one film of 1994

[03:13:10] Is clerks

[03:13:13] Yep

[03:13:14] A movie I love to watch has that indie spirit

[03:13:22] Yeah, just a fun crass

[03:13:24] You love it for salsa shark just be honest, of course

[03:13:27] Yeah, or for the dead dude in the shitter

[03:13:31] Yeah, the scene where he uh

[03:13:33] Gets carted out with his boner intact. That's why I turn it on ryan. Yeah, can I see that?

[03:13:39] Yeah, that's stiff on the stiff one

[03:13:43] Stiffy on the stiff

[03:13:45] Yep

[03:13:46] I'll never shop at this podcast again

[03:13:50] Using filthy language like that in front of the customers. You should be shamed

[03:13:55] Yeah, it's amateurish, but I love it

[03:13:57] I think it's the best thing I've I saw in 1994. Well, I didn't see it in 1994, but from 1994

[03:14:04] And on a personal note

[03:14:05] It was really fun when we were trying to find a black friday video to do amid the pandemic and whatnot and

[03:14:11] An easy solution to that was clerks to rip off clerks

[03:14:15] And make jerks, which is still one of the most fun times I've ever had on a set

[03:14:22] Fantastic

[03:14:24] My number one

[03:14:26] Yeah, that's if that's brad you have anything else to say about clerks

[03:14:30] No

[03:14:31] Yeah, they did your number one. You guys talked a lot about it and well, there is one thing else you can say

[03:14:36] You know most women, uh, well bring your lasagna at work. Most of them just cheat on you

[03:14:42] You could have ended up with a silent malibu trueism

[03:14:46] I know you could have

[03:14:49] We could end it with the the sign on the back of the car

[03:14:53] Um 37 my girlfriend sucked 37 dicks

[03:14:58] Hey, hey get back here

[03:15:03] That's beautiful

[03:15:07] Maybe I should watch clerks tonight

[03:15:08] I want to watch a good movie from a good movie rental place

[03:15:15] So is this movie any good? I don't watch movies

[03:15:19] How about these two?

[03:15:24] You'd even look at what they are. I don't appreciate your ruse, ma'am. Excuse me your ruse you're kind of get trump to trick me

[03:15:32] Well, I'm never coming here anymore. You will be missed screw you. Hey, you're not allowed to rent here anymore. Yeah

[03:15:41] I

[03:15:42] Corinne is just like in some kind of like apocalypse now like stare

[03:15:47] I've never seen the movie. Oh so good. So good. I need you knock over the casket her fucking body fell out

[03:15:56] You should have get up a bunch

[03:16:04] So anyway, yeah

[03:16:06] I think we had a really good movie coming up. Yeah very much as evidenced by our behavior

[03:16:12] All right, number one. Yeah. All right. My number one is a repeat from way long ago. It's uh tim Burton's ed wood

[03:16:20] um

[03:16:22] I saw this film before ever watching plan nine for matter space or even knowing plan nine for matter space existed

[03:16:28] and something magical that this movie does is

[03:16:33] It um

[03:16:35] prepares you to

[03:16:37] maturely accept

[03:16:38] plan nine for matter space for what it is a

[03:16:41] effort by an aspiring filmmaker to make something

[03:16:46] Based around the vision that he has with the materials that he has around him

[03:16:49] um

[03:16:50] And in that respect when I watch plan nine for matter space now. I look at it as

[03:16:58] The piece of art ed wood was trying to create

[03:17:01] As much as he fumbled the ball

[03:17:04] And I don't want to just dismiss a bad movie like that the way that the medved brothers did with their book

[03:17:10] That was counting down the worst movies of all time

[03:17:14] and I think in a way it allows me to

[03:17:17] Later on engage with stuff like mst3k and rift tracks where I'm not laughing at the movie. I'm laughing with the movie

[03:17:25] Um, and I don't and it taught me a valuable lesson about appreciating how hard it is to make a movie

[03:17:31] Um as far back as high school when I first saw it

[03:17:34] I got to this movie only because of tim Burton because I got really into tim Burton

[03:17:38] and his other stuff outside of

[03:17:41] Batman and beetle juice and stuff like that. Um, and not every tim Burton movie that I adored

[03:17:46] When I was younger has held up like I don't love beetle juice as much as I probably did when I was in high school

[03:17:51] Um, but ed wood has never left my purview. I I think it's a perfect film

[03:17:56] Um, I think it utilizes what tim Burton does best with his aesthetic on a lower budget

[03:18:02] That is more character driven and the quirk that he usually does visually with something like edward scissor hands or beetle juice

[03:18:10] Is done more through the characters these characters are quirky and

[03:18:15] This film introduced me to the screenwriting duo of scott alexander and larry kiehrauski

[03:18:20] Whose work I adore and will follow to the ends of the earth because they are the best writers of biopics that have ever lived ever

[03:18:28] Um, dolomite is my name

[03:18:31] People versus larry flint man on the moon

[03:18:33] These are classics in my mind and it all starts with them getting ed wood on their under their bell

[03:18:38] Um, and as a golden age hollywood fan

[03:18:42] I love that this movie gives a love letter to bella

[03:18:44] Um a gentleman who was very much discarded in his time and you and I have talked about this before ryan of how much more he probably could have done

[03:18:53] had he

[03:18:54] In tandem with believing in himself more, um, probably accept like

[03:18:59] There's a there's a treatment that the studios gave to him that they shouldn't have and they took advantage of him at a lot of

[03:19:04] Points in his life because he was desperate and because yes at a certain point. He was a drug addict

[03:19:09] Um, and it does not endow to the credit of a lot of people in universal studios history period

[03:19:15] um, and I think martin landow gives this wonderful spirit

[03:19:19] That almost makes you feel like he doesn't look anything like bella go see

[03:19:23] Until he puts on something like rick bakers masterful makeup that gives an approximation

[03:19:29] And gives us the spirit of bella go see back in there

[03:19:33] um, and

[03:19:34] I'm sure it's not accurate to bella jr's recollections of his own father, but

[03:19:39] It's something that still

[03:19:41] wonderfully works, um

[03:19:43] And it's one of those ensembles of tim Burton cast members

[03:19:48] with uh, george the animal steel and

[03:19:51] Uh bill murray that just just works perfectly. Um, and and I I do think that it's one of those tim Burton movies that

[03:19:59] Uh, it's one of the three that I'll always adore and treasure no matter how much my opinion of the man fluctuates over time

[03:20:07] um, it's it's

[03:20:09] It's a it's a miracle of a movie. It's a miracle to think that you would be rooting

[03:20:14] For the man who made the worst movie ever made according to a lot of people

[03:20:20] And yet by the end of that movie when he talks to

[03:20:23] his wife cathy about

[03:20:25] How it'll stop raining when they turn around the corner

[03:20:28] And then counteracting that with

[03:20:31] Edwood's actual satyr ending

[03:20:33] um

[03:20:34] The beautiful part of it is that those epigraphs don't take away from the joy you've just felt watching the movie

[03:20:41] Um, I think it's a it's a miracle film and I I really hope that people who

[03:20:46] Think that tim Burton's uh on autopilot and isn't as creative as he once was I

[03:20:52] If you haven't seen this one

[03:20:54] This is the one that should remind you that there's always a chance that he'll give you another movie like this

[03:20:58] Because he is capable of it and he's done it before and I'm sure he could do it again

[03:21:03] My number one film. I'm guessing is carens as well is the lion king. Hell. Yeah, the best movie of the year

[03:21:10] I agree. I

[03:21:14] Think the lion king is a masterpiece in animation

[03:21:17] Um from the songs from the animation itself to the voiceover work to the direction

[03:21:24] To just everything about it just works for me

[03:21:27] I I remember when it came out

[03:21:30] And my mom wanted to take my brother's night is seeing I was like, I don't want to see some cartoon

[03:21:34] This this won't be fun. And then I remember seeing it and I fell in love with it

[03:21:39] Um

[03:21:39] The integration of the 3d and this I think the stampede scene. Yeah, right. Yeah, that's great

[03:21:46] Well, you know, I was 13 at the time. So it wasn't even though I've always loved disney

[03:21:50] I didn't know if it's still cool to like disney even though that you know two years before I loved Aladdin

[03:21:55] But yeah, it's just it hits all the right notes for me

[03:22:00] About loss and about redemption

[03:22:03] And I still think one of the greatest lines in any film of anywhere

[03:22:07] Is when rafiki finds simba again and he says

[03:22:11] He hits him on the head. He's like that hurts like yeah the past can hurt

[03:22:14] But it's yeah, but it doesn't matter. It's in the past

[03:22:18] Um

[03:22:19] And it's just

[03:22:21] It's just so beautiful

[03:22:22] You know the part when simba is running back to pride rock and stuff, uh the music's great

[03:22:29] um

[03:22:31] Yeah, it has

[03:22:33] Some gravitas and I recently rewatched the remake of the live action live action one and

[03:22:42] While the movie that movie is beautiful and there's some performances in it that are great

[03:22:46] It loses something that the animated the animated film has and it's just the the expressions of the characters and

[03:22:55] The emotional way of even the songs, you know

[03:22:59] um

[03:22:59] Hakuna matata

[03:23:01] It is such a beautiful song

[03:23:04] And it's so joyous in

[03:23:06] The 94 lion king when they redid it not that it's bad

[03:23:11] Just it doesn't hit the same

[03:23:14] Beats it's a musical number built upon

[03:23:17] A word that I think disney himself tried to not use a lot, which is cartoons

[03:23:23] It's built around cartoon logic

[03:23:26] Literally on down to the staging of it like when he was a young warthog

[03:23:30] And and just like playing around with the camera angles and getting goofy with it and

[03:23:35] Over dramatizing it's something that photo realism isn't going to capture. Yeah, exactly and you know, but even the subtle

[03:23:43] performances

[03:23:45] Jeremy irons be prepared. I think it's one of the best villain songs ever

[03:23:49] um, and the way it's staged in the way it's shot um is

[03:23:53] It's just

[03:23:54] Wonderful done

[03:23:55] Jim Cummings finished the last third of that because uh irons couldn't hit the final notes

[03:24:01] Jim Cummings is a great. He's dark wing duck. Yeah, he's also ed in the movie. Yeah. Yeah, that's what I heard

[03:24:13] But there is this sinister part to it too, you know

[03:24:16] Where scar is at the end is pleading with the hyenas

[03:24:21] That hey, no, I was just saying that and then the hyenas turn on them is is pretty

[03:24:26] brutal um, yeah, and I mean

[03:24:28] And then you rediscover I mean, I've always loved this film. I always I always think it's one of the greatest films ever

[03:24:33] Uh, but when I took my kid to disneyland they have integrated

[03:24:39] I just can't wait to be king and to

[03:24:41] Mickey's fill her magic

[03:24:43] And so kellen loved

[03:24:46] um, it's in 4d. So when

[03:24:49] It so basically donald duck is going through all these big disney musical numbers

[03:24:54] And when he gets to the lion king, um, it's I just can't wait to be king and everything's popping out of the screen in 3d

[03:25:01] and um, like the wind is blowing and it just and

[03:25:05] Seeing my kid's reaction to that song

[03:25:08] Even though he's seen the film and but seeing it again and

[03:25:12] It's just how timeless it is and I think that's

[03:25:15] Well wrap it up. I think the lion king is a timeless film

[03:25:19] That will always be beautiful and always be rewatched. Can I add a beautiful addendum?

[03:25:23] Uh, my parents took me to see this in the theater. My sister adores this film. We grew up with it as children

[03:25:30] um, my favorite

[03:25:32] line in the film or moment in the film

[03:25:35] Is one that my parents kind of repeated a lot and would giggle about

[03:25:40] Which is um

[03:25:41] When scar is bored by what zazu's singing in the cage who goes sing me another one and he goes

[03:25:46] I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts. Diddly diddly there they are standing in their row

[03:25:51] Years later. I found out that that was a novelty song that

[03:25:55] um, denis day sings on the benny program at one point

[03:25:58] So it was kind of cool to realize that

[03:26:01] Rowan Atkinson's little performance there is giving you a kind of like a little novelty number and it's just a great aside in the movie

[03:26:08] Um, and there's also a point where he's doing it's a small world after all and each shoves are no no anything but that

[03:26:17] Yeah, there's a lot of things that you don't pick up as a kid that a lot of the adults at the time would have recognized

[03:26:23] Like the heat of the night reference of mr.

[03:26:25] Merrin being in the movie period

[03:26:27] Yeah, or I was literally talking about this movie with a co-worker and she's

[03:26:32] 34

[03:26:34] And I and and I wasn't even talking about the movie. I just happened to

[03:26:39] She asked me something and I said what do you want to dress and drag and do the hula?

[03:26:42] And she's what the hell is that for myself from the lion king and she said wait, they said dress and drag in the lion king

[03:26:47] I said, yeah

[03:26:49] Yeah, it's

[03:26:49] It doesn't just play to kids. It's

[03:26:53] It's great

[03:26:53] And that's probably a testament to the fact that they that

[03:26:57] Katzenberg left that unit alone because he didn't bank on this movie

[03:27:01] So they got away with a lot of random crap that wouldn't have gotten away with otherwise

[03:27:05] And this is my introduction to Nathan Lane as a as a magic man of of the theater and film

[03:27:13] And I would be lying if I said that even though this didn't make my list

[03:27:16] I adore that movie from the sole purpose of Nathan Lane and

[03:27:21] Ernie Zabella's performances in that movie

[03:27:24] You talk about the rewatchability

[03:27:26] I literally saw the second half of this movie with my niece a couple weeks ago because I don't know how it came up

[03:27:31] In conversation, I think you understand it without seeing the first half

[03:27:34] Well, she's already seen it. It was like halfway through the movie

[03:27:37] So we just picked up from wherever they had left off the last time

[03:27:40] I think like one of the songs came on her like little kids playlist

[03:27:43] So it was like we gotta watch the movie and I like started singing a lot

[03:27:46] Fun fact if you show this movie in front of me, I will quote the entire thing to you

[03:27:50] I'll just just recite it. Okay. So I won't see it with you. Okay

[03:27:54] Don't don't because I will you started doing the dialogue earlier and I just went off

[03:27:59] Just consequently don't come and watch clerks at my house because well, actually you and I would probably just

[03:28:04] Dialogue it together. It's fine. I mean just when I watch the film

[03:28:08] I don't need to hear someone else say the lines to me

[03:28:10] But isn't it more fun when you're just repeating the words even though you're not the actor

[03:28:14] Of course

[03:28:15] It's like when I went to go see scott pilgrim and a

[03:28:18] A sweet woman next to us who adored the movie kept quoting the entire movie the entire time

[03:28:23] And I I had I wrestled with it kindly but my friends one were just like we're like we want to leave

[03:28:33] So if you ever meet my mom, which hopefully never do um

[03:28:37] I don't know. Yeah, I don't know why don't you want us to meet your mom because she'll kick your ass for all the times

[03:28:42] You've made fun of her

[03:28:45] Well, you know

[03:28:47] It's complicated this woman don't play around. I don't think you yeah, I wouldn't want her to meet you guys

[03:28:53] Anyway, um, but one of the stories is so embarrassed by us. Fuck anyways, go ahead

[03:29:00] So one of the stories she would tell you about this movie taking me to it the very the very first time

[03:29:05] We ever saw this movie in the theaters in the 90s

[03:29:09] Is um, so we want to see it

[03:29:11] and then afterward

[03:29:13] went over across the street to the godfather's pizza to have dinner I guess and

[03:29:19] We were I'm three years old right we're in the bathroom

[03:29:22] I don't know how it came up in conversation, but apparently I said it doesn't matter. It's in the past

[03:29:28] And she looks at me like

[03:29:30] What are you talking about? What is that from and I'm like it's from the movie we can return this kid

[03:29:36] The lion king and she's like what the hell like we just saw it

[03:29:39] I'm again. I was three years old and I was just quoting the movie we saw so

[03:29:44] This was a cornerstone for me for like especially among disney movies. I watched it constantly

[03:29:50] my poor parents

[03:29:52] Must have been so tired of like akuna matata and I can't wait to be king and all that

[03:29:56] I've seen the sequels. I've seen the stage version. I love, you know, all the music all the soundtrack

[03:30:05] Even the broadway only songs

[03:30:08] It's yeah, it's fantastic and

[03:30:11] I remember watching this on a school trip to Washington D.C

[03:30:15] And there was a girl behind me

[03:30:17] I don't it wasn't that close to her but we knew each other

[03:30:19] And I guess she wasn't feeling well

[03:30:21] They put this movie on because you know, they have those little TVs on the bus

[03:30:24] And I just started quoting the whole movie and I guess it made her feel better because she was like, oh, you know

[03:30:32] I was feeling really bad

[03:30:33] If she was sick or something and she's like, ah, but hearing you

[03:30:37] You know recite the whole movie maybe feel better. And I was like, oh

[03:30:41] Okay, it's a genuinely quote clerks for a second. That's beautiful, man. Like that is a lovely story

[03:30:47] I like that if you want to see Nathan Lane be really fun

[03:30:50] He plays this gay guy named pepper in modern family and he's brilliant in it

[03:30:56] And it and his his name before his pepper saltman

[03:31:00] It's funny. It's so funny and stupid, but

[03:31:04] He's a gay wedding planner. It's great. You should see it. She watched modern family. It's beautiful

[03:31:08] Um, thanks for listening to real nerds film explosion 1994

[03:31:14] I think I didn't get any I got one. Okay, cool

[03:31:16] That's how I was knowing this isn't a very popular year is we literally got no list except for brad

[03:31:22] What are you talking about?

[03:31:22] I was 94 not a good year. How is this not popular?

[03:31:26] This is such a good year for me. Did everybody forget the indie new wave of the 90s?

[03:31:31] And how 94 was a watershed?

[03:31:34] Counterpoint not a great year. Yes, like I you know at my met

[03:31:39] measurement is how

[03:31:41] Like easy it is to make a top 10. Yeah, like my bottom

[03:31:45] Three were kind of like

[03:31:48] Maybe yeah, these are movies. I like

[03:31:52] I mean, I think they there was a wide variety, you know, we had a lot of kids movies. We had a lot of action

[03:31:58] horror suspense

[03:32:01] comedies

[03:32:03] It's nothing from carol, huh? No, uh, she

[03:32:06] Felt behind and she got busy, but she sends her love

[03:32:10] That's a shame because we'll never do this again

[03:32:14] Uh, but dale Zachary texted me, um on my post

[03:32:18] Uh, his favorite films of 1994 much like ours the Shawshank redemption pulp fiction true lies the crow

[03:32:26] Uh, dumb and dumber muriel's wedding the professional or leon the professional

[03:32:32] natural born killers the mask speed clerks ace and turip pet detectives

[03:32:36] force gump 12 monkeys. He says ghosts in the shell that's 95 dude

[03:32:42] um

[03:32:43] Outbreak and time cop

[03:32:45] nice

[03:32:48] Outbreak the deadly mutabovirus

[03:32:51] And they say specifically because john van claud john claud van dam does a splits on the washer and dryer

[03:32:56] Is why he likes oh, that's what he says at the bottom of why he likes time cop. You just don't get it karin

[03:33:01] sorry

[03:33:03] Uh, so yeah, thanks for the person who sent it in that's how I always know if this is a popular film year

[03:33:09] Um next week we're seeing beetle juice beetle juice

[03:33:13] Um, so tim Burton's coming back

[03:33:16] Um, oh should start getting our o4 lists ready, right? Yeah, that'll be pretty pretty soon

[03:33:21] I think we're gonna end up. Yeah each of the remaining years is going to be each month

[03:33:25] Yeah, pretty much. Yeah, october for

[03:33:29] 2004 and then november for 2014 again. Yep

[03:33:34] And then our regular one at the end of the year somewhere between the end of the year

[03:33:38] so thanks for listening and

[03:33:41] We will see you at the movies

[03:33:43] Keep it real nerds. Nope. Bye

[03:33:46] Thanks karin. Yeah, that one's lame. That's all folks. I'll take that one
