[00:00:35] Thanks for listening and enjoy the show.
[00:00:38] Camera, action!
[00:00:43] Well a real nerd knows who shot and a real nerd can follow the plot and a real nerd can
[00:00:50] talk to a film.
[00:00:52] I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
[00:00:53] Take it outside.
[00:00:54] And welcome to a fabulous edition of Reel Nerds Podcast, the best movie podcast on the
[00:01:25] internet. I am Ryan. I am joined by Brad.
[00:01:28] I can't believe I'm actually going to review a movie that I saw the same day we're doing
[00:01:32] the podcast.
[00:01:33] I know, me too. Literally, I think I got out of it about two hours before you did.
[00:01:39] Yeah, like that hasn't happened in years.
[00:01:42] I know. I mean, we've come so far that it's literally just the both of us now too. You
[00:01:47] know, we've, our crew is still around, but they've been cut by two, I mean, five, 10, I
[00:01:55] don't know. A lot. Math's hard.
[00:02:00] Yeah, our parent company, Neb Decisions Multimedia, downsized and cut their hours.
[00:02:06] We call this the Zaslav treatment. They thought that it's better to just take the tax write-off,
[00:02:13] so we cut James and Henry from the podcast and we got a nice tax break for it, so it worked
[00:02:22] out.
[00:02:23] Yep. Not enough to repair the website, but we assure you the money is being as well spent.
[00:02:29] And we could only have Corinne and Zach show up in special occasions because we can't afford
[00:02:36] anything.
[00:02:37] Yeah, we can't afford them to be on regular episodes, so they just show up for film collections.
[00:02:40] Yeah, because they signed a contract and, you know, they have to appear in so many episodes
[00:02:44] and the current plan was scrapped, so now they have to just come back when we ask them to,
[00:02:49] so, you know.
[00:02:51] Yeah.
[00:02:53] Yeah.
[00:02:54] Money has hit us.
[00:02:56] Hit us just like every other industry.
[00:02:59] Yes.
[00:03:01] The movie we saw this week is Joker.
[00:03:04] Fully adieu.
[00:03:07] Stay tuned.
[00:03:08] Might as well just call it Joker Chapter 2 or something.
[00:03:13] Stay tuned.
[00:03:13] We'll review the film.
[00:03:15] Tell you if we like it or not.
[00:03:17] Recommend it.
[00:03:18] Play the trailer and then spoil it.
[00:03:19] We'll also talk about movie news and stuff we watch throughout the week.
[00:03:24] Yeah, just keep on chugging along, you know.
[00:03:29] It's what we do for coming up on our 15th anniversary next year.
[00:03:35] Yeah, this is episode 650, so we're halfway to 700 now.
[00:03:39] Yeah.
[00:03:41] I guess technically it's, is it 15?
[00:03:43] 14.
[00:03:44] No, it'll be 14.
[00:03:46] But soon.
[00:03:48] What are we going to do when we hit episode 1000?
[00:03:51] Oh, dude.
[00:03:54] Well, I didn't want to spoil it.
[00:03:57] But Robert Downey Jr. will be on the 1000th episode of Real Nerds Podcast.
[00:04:01] We'll finally get his attention.
[00:04:03] Yeah.
[00:04:04] It's like, holy shit, you've seen these guys have been doing like a podcast for 20 years.
[00:04:08] And then he sees the first episode of our pod show.
[00:04:11] I am out.
[00:04:14] Dude, how amazing would it be if you like contact you and said like, look, I think you need the real me.
[00:04:19] Oh my gosh.
[00:04:20] And like has us remake the episode.
[00:04:23] I'd say, Brad, you have to shoot me from the waist up because I have a boner the whole time.
[00:04:29] Watch out for my tripod.
[00:04:33] You're going to poke an eye out with that thing.
[00:04:37] Yeah.
[00:04:38] Anyways.
[00:04:40] So yeah, that's what we do.
[00:04:41] We see a new movie.
[00:04:42] We podcast our experience to the world.
[00:04:45] Yeah.
[00:04:46] Yeah.
[00:04:48] Sorry.
[00:04:49] One second.
[00:04:50] I have a cat that is an asshole.
[00:04:54] And all he does is knock things over all the time and runs and jumps on me.
[00:04:58] And he just knocked over our whole trash can.
[00:05:00] So.
[00:05:01] You know, that's nice of him.
[00:05:04] Yeah.
[00:05:04] Fucking cat.
[00:05:07] Anyways.
[00:05:08] Hey, Brad, we saw Joker.
[00:05:10] Do you recommend that film?
[00:05:14] Sort of.
[00:05:17] Again, like the other one, it's gorgeous to look at.
[00:05:22] Experience wise, I don't know how to feel about it.
[00:05:26] On the one hand, it feels like just a hot mess.
[00:05:29] On the other hand, it feels like someone really understands like mental illness.
[00:05:34] On the other hand, kind of a puss out way out of the franchise.
[00:05:41] I don't know.
[00:05:41] Like.
[00:05:43] Yeah.
[00:05:45] You know what?
[00:05:46] I actually agree with everything you said.
[00:05:48] I really liked the first one.
[00:05:51] My biggest complaint about the first one is how it ended.
[00:05:56] And it's also one of my biggest complaints about this one is I thought the first one should
[00:05:59] have ended with him on top of the cop car.
[00:06:01] It's smearing the blood to be the Joker smile instead of him being in a mental institution.
[00:06:09] And this one kind of just takes the mental illness part where I was compelled at certain points
[00:06:15] in this film.
[00:06:17] Because I really liked the Harley character for a little bit.
[00:06:21] And then I kind of didn't.
[00:06:23] Yeah.
[00:06:23] And then you're right.
[00:06:24] The ending is a big puss out.
[00:06:26] And when I read an interview with Todd Phillips, it's even bigger slap in the face.
[00:06:32] And we're seeing that.
[00:06:33] I saw it on a Tuesday.
[00:06:35] So the audience has already weighed in on this film.
[00:06:40] And it's not going to do well.
[00:06:42] Yeah.
[00:06:44] Probably going to be a big dip from Billionaire.
[00:06:46] But also, I appreciate it for being daring to not be a typical sequel, if that makes sense.
[00:06:54] Sure.
[00:06:54] So I'm like, yeah, I just don't know how to feel about it.
[00:06:56] And also, it has a strong commentary on how our perceptions of these characters does society damage.
[00:07:09] You know?
[00:07:10] Mm-hmm.
[00:07:11] But yeah, it's a weird one.
[00:07:13] Yeah.
[00:07:13] Here's the trailer for Joker.
[00:07:17] Two years ago, the name Arthur Fleck had Gotham like a hurricane.
[00:07:21] The trial of the century.
[00:07:23] They believe Arthur Fleck to be some kind of martyr.
[00:07:28] Well, he's not.
[00:07:31] He's a monster.
[00:07:37] When I first saw Joker, when I saw you,
[00:07:50] for once in my life, I didn't feel so alone anymore.
[00:07:57] In my life, I have someone who needs me.
[00:08:23] How about you, Arthur?
[00:08:26] Do you still think you're a star?
[00:08:31] Showtime.
[00:08:50] You're Joker.
[00:09:00] I will no longer allow...
[00:09:13] ...suspicion that we're not giving the people what they want.
[00:09:17] It's okay, baby.
[00:09:21] Let's give the people what they want.
[00:09:22] The second part of Arthur Fleck's story is it picks up a little over a year after he kills...
[00:10:14] Murray something.
[00:10:15] Murray.
[00:10:16] Yeah, thank you.
[00:10:17] On his talk show.
[00:10:18] And he's getting ready to go stand trial.
[00:10:20] And he's being evaluated if he's competent or not for trial.
[00:10:26] Whether he's too insane to do it.
[00:10:27] And his defense attorney, played by Catherine Kinnear, who's great in this movie...
[00:10:32] Yeah, I didn't know she was in it.
[00:10:33] I know.
[00:10:34] I didn't either.
[00:10:35] She believes that Arthur and Joker are two separate people.
[00:10:41] And that he suffers from basically two personalities due through years of abuse.
[00:10:47] Yeah.
[00:10:48] And even though he's...
[00:10:51] It should be Blackgate Prison, but it's Arkham Prison.
[00:10:54] And then she's trying to get him moved to a mental health facility instead of an asylum.
[00:11:01] Yeah.
[00:11:01] Trying to get him sent to an asylum instead of prison.
[00:11:03] And while he's in prison, he meets Lee.
[00:11:11] So he's really Harley Quinn.
[00:11:15] And she's in there for being a pyro person.
[00:11:22] Yeah.
[00:11:23] Pyromaniac.
[00:11:24] Yeah, pyromaniac.
[00:11:25] Thank you.
[00:11:25] And burning her house down.
[00:11:26] And she connects with him right away.
[00:11:29] And they kind of build this little love thing.
[00:11:34] And there's...
[00:11:34] The musical numbers I actually thought were really clever in this movie.
[00:11:39] I thought it told the story well.
[00:11:43] And to your point before we started this, there is a mental illness part to this that I think helps with the film being...
[00:11:53] I don't know if the...
[00:11:54] Maybe like a little perverse in...
[00:11:57] You feel sorry for Arthur.
[00:12:00] Because they also turned the dynamic of Harley Quinn and the Joker.
[00:12:05] Where you learn...
[00:12:07] We aren't spoilers.
[00:12:08] That Harley is actually still a psychiatrist.
[00:12:12] And she's using him.
[00:12:14] Yeah.
[00:12:15] Because...
[00:12:16] And exploiting his mental illness.
[00:12:18] Like other people are exploiting it.
[00:12:21] And I thought that was an interesting dynamic.
[00:12:23] Because it kind of makes her...
[00:12:25] Gives her character a different dimension.
[00:12:29] Yeah.
[00:12:30] She's not like the...
[00:12:31] Just like sycophant of...
[00:12:32] You know, head over heels for this guy.
[00:12:35] And will...
[00:12:35] You know, do anything he says.
[00:12:38] She's like actually the one in control.
[00:12:41] Yeah.
[00:12:41] So it's a cool dynamic.
[00:12:43] Because...
[00:12:44] She is really cold and calculating.
[00:12:47] And...
[00:12:48] She...
[00:12:49] She...
[00:12:49] Preys on Arthur's mental illness and his low IQ.
[00:12:53] Where, you know, she tells him...
[00:12:55] Oh, I'm pregnant, by the way.
[00:12:57] After...
[00:12:58] She...
[00:12:59] Is called out by his lawyer...
[00:13:01] For being a liar.
[00:13:02] And then...
[00:13:03] He falls into the trap again.
[00:13:07] And...
[00:13:07] You know, becomes...
[00:13:09] The Joker at his trial.
[00:13:13] And...
[00:13:14] Like there is some elements to this film that are really cool.
[00:13:17] But then also...
[00:13:19] There's parts where it's a little boring.
[00:13:23] And...
[00:13:24] You know...
[00:13:26] I don't know.
[00:13:28] Yeah.
[00:13:28] So they're going like for two and...
[00:13:30] I don't know.
[00:13:30] Ten minute...
[00:13:31] Two hour, ten minute movie.
[00:13:32] Like where...
[00:13:33] Like what are they going to do at this point?
[00:13:35] Yeah.
[00:13:35] Like what I was watching.
[00:13:37] Yeah.
[00:13:37] And the next thing I knew, is that like almost over?
[00:13:40] Yeah.
[00:13:40] And there's a lot of unresolved storylines.
[00:13:45] You know...
[00:13:46] Because...
[00:13:47] I want...
[00:13:48] I don't know if it was on purpose.
[00:13:49] But I wanted to see more of Harley Quinn.
[00:13:53] You know...
[00:13:53] Even the trailers had...
[00:13:55] Like them dancing on the steps of the courthouse.
[00:13:58] Oh, yeah.
[00:13:59] You know...
[00:13:59] You know, when Arthur got out...
[00:14:01] I was...
[00:14:01] I mean...
[00:14:02] The comic book person in me...
[00:14:05] When...
[00:14:05] At the end...
[00:14:06] When they do the car bomb at the...
[00:14:08] The courthouse.
[00:14:09] And they get...
[00:14:10] Uh...
[00:14:10] Arthur out.
[00:14:12] And he meets...
[00:14:13] Harley on the stairs.
[00:14:15] I really wanted them to become...
[00:14:16] You know...
[00:14:17] The clown prince of crime.
[00:14:18] Or...
[00:14:18] The comic book guy in me.
[00:14:21] Um...
[00:14:21] But then...
[00:14:22] They go to this total puss out...
[00:14:25] Of...
[00:14:25] Um...
[00:14:26] That...
[00:14:27] Arthur really isn't the Joker.
[00:14:30] He's...
[00:14:30] Just Arthur.
[00:14:31] And he started this movement.
[00:14:33] And he gets murdered...
[00:14:35] In prison.
[00:14:38] And...
[00:14:38] By someone more inclined to be the typical Joker.
[00:14:41] Yeah.
[00:14:41] They're not telling me that that's the Heath Ledger Joker, right?
[00:14:44] I did not get that.
[00:14:46] Because he cuts his...
[00:14:47] The smile in his face at the end.
[00:14:51] Um...
[00:14:52] So...
[00:14:52] I...
[00:14:52] I'm hoping that they're not making that canon.
[00:14:55] Because that would be really disappointing.
[00:14:57] Well, as far as I know, they're not making any more movies based on this universe.
[00:15:00] But...
[00:15:00] I didn't get that.
[00:15:02] I guess it's like...
[00:15:03] It feels like a bunch of different Jokers in the comics and this are like that.
[00:15:08] So...
[00:15:08] Yeah.
[00:15:09] I think it was more just explaining like, oh...
[00:15:11] Everyone else that's like...
[00:15:13] Supported Arthur is gonna become the Joker.
[00:15:16] You know?
[00:15:16] It's not gonna be like one guy.
[00:15:17] It's a movement.
[00:15:20] Yeah.
[00:15:20] Much like the Dark Knight is a symbol in the Dark Knight.
[00:15:23] You know?
[00:15:23] Mm-hmm.
[00:15:24] It's like...
[00:15:24] A reverse of this is like, okay, this guy's created like...
[00:15:28] A chaos symbol that isn't gonna be one person.
[00:15:32] Okay.
[00:15:33] I was just really worried when I saw that.
[00:15:34] It's like, he's really carving a smile on his face.
[00:15:37] And I was about to like...
[00:15:40] I don't know.
[00:15:42] So I did have a feeling as it was getting to the conclusion...
[00:15:45] I was thinking in my head that they were gonna kill Arthur.
[00:15:50] And...
[00:15:51] Yeah.
[00:15:51] I don't know.
[00:15:53] Yeah.
[00:15:53] I was shocked.
[00:15:53] I like...
[00:15:54] Didn't think that was gonna happen.
[00:15:57] Uh...
[00:15:58] I figured like maybe...
[00:16:01] Harley was gonna come back and like, oh, I've got this plan.
[00:16:04] Or this is all part of the plan.
[00:16:05] And yeah, just like they knifed him.
[00:16:07] And like...
[00:16:07] I didn't really get like...
[00:16:10] Why the...
[00:16:11] The guards were so upset by his...
[00:16:14] Television appearance.
[00:16:15] Like...
[00:16:15] Because he called him fat?
[00:16:17] Yeah.
[00:16:18] Come on, dude.
[00:16:19] And then like...
[00:16:20] I expected him like at the trial to be like, oh, by the way...
[00:16:23] Uh...
[00:16:23] The Brendan Gleeson guy killed...
[00:16:24] You know...
[00:16:25] Because I did this.
[00:16:27] You know, I got this other guy in prison killed.
[00:16:29] So yeah, definitely get him.
[00:16:30] While you're...
[00:16:31] Yeah.
[00:16:31] Give me the chair.
[00:16:32] Yeah.
[00:16:33] Yeah.
[00:16:33] Yeah.
[00:16:33] Because there's like...
[00:16:34] And there's certain things.
[00:16:35] When he calls his friend Gary up...
[00:16:38] Like that seems actually pretty heartbreaking.
[00:16:40] Yeah.
[00:16:40] You know?
[00:16:41] And I'm like, oh man, this...
[00:16:42] There's moments in this movie...
[00:16:44] That I am really sucked into it.
[00:16:46] Um...
[00:16:47] But it just seems that it falls flat a little bit in a lot of places.
[00:16:52] And it's too divisive.
[00:16:54] You know?
[00:16:54] It's basically giving the middle finger to comic book fans.
[00:16:58] You know?
[00:16:59] Yeah.
[00:16:59] Um...
[00:16:59] I actually kind of...
[00:17:00] It felt like it was giving a finger to people who like...
[00:17:02] Loved the Joker.
[00:17:04] Like the first movie.
[00:17:05] Who like...
[00:17:06] Thought he was like this hero.
[00:17:09] Yeah.
[00:17:09] And I mean...
[00:17:10] And that's always going to be the problem with...
[00:17:12] It...
[00:17:12] I actually...
[00:17:13] It's funny you say that.
[00:17:14] I read an article today on The Hollywood Reporter that talks just about that.
[00:17:20] Where...
[00:17:21] Outside of Batman and Spider-Man...
[00:17:23] The Joker might be the most popular comic book character.
[00:17:27] And I had a thing about that.
[00:17:28] And I think they might be right.
[00:17:30] And when you...
[00:17:32] Take something that people love...
[00:17:35] And you give them an origin story for the first one that...
[00:17:38] Kind of delivers on...
[00:17:39] You know?
[00:17:40] Who the Joker might be.
[00:17:42] And then in this one you're like...
[00:17:43] No.
[00:17:43] He's just some dude.
[00:17:44] And he's dead.
[00:17:45] Yeah.
[00:17:46] Did you forget he's a terrible person?
[00:17:48] Because we're going to remind you that...
[00:17:49] Like...
[00:17:50] You should not idolize this guy.
[00:17:52] Yeah.
[00:17:53] And...
[00:17:54] I thought it would have been cool if...
[00:17:56] I mean...
[00:17:56] Obviously it doesn't matter.
[00:17:58] But...
[00:17:58] You know?
[00:17:59] They did that three Joker story.
[00:18:00] Which was really fascinating.
[00:18:02] Where...
[00:18:02] Each era of the Joker...
[00:18:05] Is...
[00:18:05] Someone different.
[00:18:06] Because their personalities are different.
[00:18:09] And I thought that's maybe that they were going to do in this movie.
[00:18:12] Where...
[00:18:13] You know?
[00:18:14] Arthur is the comedian Joker.
[00:18:15] And he's a failed comedian.
[00:18:17] And then the next one is going to be...
[00:18:19] You know?
[00:18:19] The Heath Ledger Asian of Chaos one.
[00:18:22] And...
[00:18:23] Then whatever the fuck...
[00:18:24] Jared Leto's one is.
[00:18:27] I thought that's maybe the path they're going.
[00:18:29] But no.
[00:18:29] They decided to just kill him.
[00:18:31] And be like...
[00:18:31] Nah.
[00:18:31] Fuck you guys.
[00:18:33] Um...
[00:18:33] You don't get any...
[00:18:36] You don't get any...
[00:18:38] Resolution to this story.
[00:18:39] To the Harley Quinn story.
[00:18:42] Um...
[00:18:42] To Harvey Dent.
[00:18:44] Which they kind of alluded to.
[00:18:45] That he's Two-Face.
[00:18:46] You don't get any of that stuff.
[00:18:48] You're just...
[00:18:49] This is just how it's going to end.
[00:18:51] All fucking depressing with his eyes.
[00:18:54] Yeah.
[00:18:54] And becoming dilated.
[00:18:56] So...
[00:18:56] Like...
[00:18:57] They're like...
[00:18:58] Okay.
[00:18:58] What are we going to do for the second one?
[00:18:59] They're like...
[00:18:59] Oh.
[00:18:59] I kind of got this idea about like...
[00:19:01] Just like...
[00:19:01] Him going through his trial.
[00:19:03] And maybe hallucinating some things.
[00:19:05] And then like...
[00:19:06] They got to the end of the movie.
[00:19:07] Like...
[00:19:07] Yeah.
[00:19:07] We're actually kind of bored with this stuff.
[00:19:09] Let's just like...
[00:19:10] Not do this anymore.
[00:19:11] Yeah.
[00:19:12] And there's like...
[00:19:13] Moments where Joaquin Phoenix...
[00:19:15] Is really good.
[00:19:17] Um...
[00:19:17] In the trial...
[00:19:19] Uh...
[00:19:20] He does these little face...
[00:19:22] Uh...
[00:19:22] Facial expressions.
[00:19:24] Or...
[00:19:24] He does like...
[00:19:25] Huffs and puffs that...
[00:19:27] You...
[00:19:28] You feel that he does suffer from mental health.
[00:19:30] And he...
[00:19:31] Can't control who he is.
[00:19:35] Um...
[00:19:35] But it's never fully...
[00:19:37] You know...
[00:19:38] Developed.
[00:19:40] Um...
[00:19:40] And I...
[00:19:41] I think that's...
[00:19:42] What makes the Joker...
[00:19:43] Unpredictable.
[00:19:45] And...
[00:19:46] I...
[00:19:46] Too...
[00:19:47] I was hoping...
[00:19:47] And this is...
[00:19:48] Again...
[00:19:48] Just me as a movie person and watching...
[00:19:51] His closing statement...
[00:19:52] Where he says it's just Arthur...
[00:19:54] I was really hoping they would...
[00:19:55] They would find him not guilty.
[00:19:56] And he's gonna go out and...
[00:19:58] Uh...
[00:19:59] Say...
[00:20:00] You know...
[00:20:00] Arthur's dead and it's only the Joker.
[00:20:02] And...
[00:20:03] I played this system just like I played everybody.
[00:20:06] Um...
[00:20:07] Cause I thought it was maybe, uh...
[00:20:09] Like a ploy.
[00:20:11] You know?
[00:20:11] Yeah.
[00:20:13] But...
[00:20:13] I don't know.
[00:20:16] Also, uh...
[00:20:17] As a, uh...
[00:20:18] Police officer...
[00:20:19] How about that prison?
[00:20:20] And all like...
[00:20:21] The lacks of...
[00:20:25] Like...
[00:20:25] You know?
[00:20:26] Yeah.
[00:20:26] Just letting, like, Harley Quinn into his, like, uh...
[00:20:29] Isolation cell and, uh...
[00:20:32] You know, the free cigarettes and...
[00:20:34] What else?
[00:20:35] God, there's so many, like, just lapses in security.
[00:20:37] They were just like...
[00:20:38] Yeah, that doesn't happen.
[00:20:39] In fact, um...
[00:20:40] Cigarettes are considered contraband in jails.
[00:20:43] And if you have it on you, it's a felony.
[00:20:46] Yeah.
[00:20:48] Um...
[00:20:48] Yeah, so many, like, lax things about that.
[00:20:52] Yeah.
[00:20:53] I was just like, geez, Ryan must be squirming.
[00:20:56] Yeah, it's...
[00:20:57] It's...
[00:20:57] Like, you know, I take...
[00:20:58] I take it as entertainment.
[00:20:59] You know, like, they had the judge talk about, like...
[00:21:01] He can wear his costume to the trial.
[00:21:03] But I'm like, okay, so...
[00:21:04] But at the prison, someone had to give him a...
[00:21:08] Tray of makeup to put on.
[00:21:09] Yeah.
[00:21:10] Where's he getting this from?
[00:21:11] I don't know.
[00:21:12] Where are they keeping his purple suit in prison?
[00:21:14] You know?
[00:21:14] It's like...
[00:21:15] Just, like, giving him the time to get...
[00:21:18] Yeah.
[00:21:18] It's ridiculous.
[00:21:20] Yeah.
[00:21:20] So there's just, like...
[00:21:21] It just feels incomplete.
[00:21:24] And...
[00:21:25] A little pretentious on its own.
[00:21:29] Because, like I said, there is...
[00:21:31] There is elements here that I really enjoy.
[00:21:33] I think that exploring how people suffer from mental health and how...
[00:21:38] It can affect you.
[00:21:40] Whether it's his mom and being, you know, abused and sexually abused and stuff.
[00:21:45] It's just...
[00:21:46] But they don't really want to exploit it.
[00:21:48] And that's fine.
[00:21:49] But it...
[00:21:49] I don't know.
[00:21:51] It just feels...
[00:21:52] A lot of unresolved issues.
[00:21:55] Yeah.
[00:21:55] Or come down with a definitive take on anything.
[00:21:57] Yeah.
[00:21:58] It seems everything's just like, oh, we're not going to really do it.
[00:22:01] We're really not going to commit to Arthur being the Joker.
[00:22:03] Joker.
[00:22:05] Which I never got anyways.
[00:22:07] Why don't you just go full-blown Joker?
[00:22:11] And that's why people are pissed off.
[00:22:13] And it got a worse cinema score than Madam Web.
[00:22:18] Which I forgot came out this year.
[00:22:20] So...
[00:22:21] Yeah.
[00:22:22] But...
[00:22:22] That's not fair.
[00:22:23] This is way more coherent than Madam Web was.
[00:22:26] Oh, yeah.
[00:22:26] No.
[00:22:26] It's a ten times better movie than that.
[00:22:29] But...
[00:22:30] Because the writing is...
[00:22:31] At least...
[00:22:32] And the acting is good.
[00:22:34] Yeah.
[00:22:34] It looks like the actors want to be there.
[00:22:36] Yeah.
[00:22:36] Yeah.
[00:22:36] It's not a Pepsi Cola ad.
[00:22:38] So...
[00:22:39] I cannot believe that movie came out this year.
[00:22:42] Yeah.
[00:22:44] And I only have one more.
[00:22:45] I have Craven the Hunter in December.
[00:22:46] So, you know.
[00:22:47] Who knows?
[00:22:49] Oh, and I have Venom, too.
[00:22:50] I have two more fucking...
[00:22:52] Sony, Marvel, Spider-Man universe movies.
[00:22:56] You're eating good.
[00:22:59] Dude, I'm so excited.
[00:23:01] Because...
[00:23:02] Is Venom...
[00:23:03] Oh, no, wait.
[00:23:04] Does Venom come out in December and they push...
[00:23:06] Craven to February?
[00:23:08] Or is...
[00:23:09] I don't know.
[00:23:10] Venom at the end of the month?
[00:23:11] Not following those movies at all.
[00:23:13] I want to...
[00:23:14] Maybe it is Venom at the end of the month and Craven in December.
[00:23:19] Let's see.
[00:23:20] I mean, I've seen a lot of the trailers, but...
[00:23:22] They're not coming...
[00:23:23] So Venom comes out October 25th.
[00:23:27] Oh, geez.
[00:23:28] Okay.
[00:23:32] And Craven is December 13th.
[00:23:35] So they literally are just stacking their Marvel movies.
[00:23:38] So good for them.
[00:23:42] Yep.
[00:23:45] Anything you want to add for Joker, Brad?
[00:23:47] I don't think so.
[00:23:48] I think we covered it all.
[00:23:51] Awesome.
[00:23:52] Hey!
[00:23:52] This is a big movie news of the week.
[00:23:56] It's real news!
[00:24:03] I forgot it.
[00:24:05] So...
[00:24:07] I had it pulled up and then my windows closed.
[00:24:13] Yeah.
[00:24:15] This is what we've watched this week.
[00:24:18] So, yeah.
[00:24:19] This is the stuff we've been watching.
[00:24:22] Brad, what did you watch this week?
[00:24:25] Uh, let's see.
[00:24:27] I guess the big thing is, um, I watched, uh, Frankie Frico.
[00:24:31] Ah, man.
[00:24:32] I wanted to see that.
[00:24:34] Slow down.
[00:24:35] Oh, do I not?
[00:24:38] Uh...
[00:24:40] It's, uh...
[00:24:41] It's not...
[00:24:44] So, Frankie Frico is the story of this square-ass business guy, um, who is pretty milquetoast.
[00:24:55] And he, uh...
[00:24:58] Goes home and watches this commercial, like, uh, like one of those 900-number commercials.
[00:25:04] Late night ones for this guy, Frankie Frico.
[00:25:07] Uh, who's like this, like, gremlin character who likes to party.
[00:25:11] Oh, shit.
[00:25:12] And, uh...
[00:25:13] Then his wife, uh, who is pretty dissatisfied with their relationship, uh, is like, I gotta go out of town.
[00:25:18] So you better keep the place, uh, neat and tidy while I'm gone.
[00:25:23] And he just can't resist calling the number.
[00:25:26] And then...
[00:25:27] Like Captain Hat?
[00:25:27] Yep.
[00:25:28] Frankie Frico gets transported from his universe with two other little gremlins.
[00:25:33] Uh, and they trash his house.
[00:25:36] And, um...
[00:25:37] Meanwhile, his boss, who's basically like a lumber type, is trying to get him to go into work on the weekend to shred some documents for some, you know, activities that he might be, um, indicted for.
[00:25:51] It's like, uh, I need you to go to the office, uh, and shred these documents and make sure the camera can see you do it.
[00:25:58] But, um...
[00:25:58] So it's got this, like, quirky, typical, like, psycho goreman type of humor.
[00:26:03] And it is funny.
[00:26:04] But, um, Frankie Frico is, like, really underdeveloped as a character.
[00:26:08] Like, yeah, he's just a party gremlin.
[00:26:10] But he's got, like, these two sidekicks.
[00:26:11] So they all kind of share the spotlight.
[00:26:14] And, uh...
[00:26:14] But they're still, like, secondary to this, uh...
[00:26:17] I forgot the character's name, but, like, you know, the dork guy.
[00:26:22] Um...
[00:26:23] Uh...
[00:26:23] So, yeah.
[00:26:24] Eventually, like...
[00:26:26] They're about to murder him.
[00:26:28] And then, like, uh...
[00:26:29] He gets the upper hand and then doesn't.
[00:26:32] And then he gets transported back to, like, Frankie Frico's universe where there's, like, this, you know, mob boss who's, like, ruling the entire planet.
[00:26:39] Um...
[00:26:40] And, uh...
[00:26:40] Putting Frico's into, like, camps and things or killing them via robots.
[00:26:46] Yeah.
[00:26:47] Um...
[00:26:48] It's crazy.
[00:26:49] And there's a lot of...
[00:26:51] But there's a lot of, like, fun puppety type stuff.
[00:26:53] And practical things.
[00:26:55] And silly, goofy jokes.
[00:26:57] Um...
[00:26:57] Like, eventually the boss comes over to his house.
[00:27:00] And it's like...
[00:27:01] I don't want to...
[00:27:02] You know...
[00:27:03] So, like, the Frico shoots the nerdy guy in the neck.
[00:27:07] Like, he goes to the office.
[00:27:09] And he's like...
[00:27:09] Eventually he gets his boss to come over.
[00:27:11] And he's like...
[00:27:11] I just...
[00:27:11] You know...
[00:27:13] I still think you're lying.
[00:27:14] But I want to see, like...
[00:27:15] What you're talking about.
[00:27:17] Like, because you have this, like, gunshot wound in your neck.
[00:27:19] Um...
[00:27:19] And he goes, like, into the basement and steps in a bear trap.
[00:27:22] And, like, gets covered in glue.
[00:27:23] And it's stuck to the floor for the rest of the movie.
[00:27:25] Um...
[00:27:26] Stuff like that.
[00:27:27] Um...
[00:27:27] And there's, like, a big monster.
[00:27:29] Like, practical monster at the end.
[00:27:31] That they fight with a chainsaw.
[00:27:34] Um...
[00:27:34] But, yeah.
[00:27:35] There's just, like, not much else there.
[00:27:37] You know?
[00:27:38] Huh.
[00:27:40] Because I was excited.
[00:27:41] Uh...
[00:27:41] You know, because...
[00:27:42] Psycho Goreman.
[00:27:43] And...
[00:27:44] I mean, the trailer's pretty silly.
[00:27:46] Um...
[00:27:46] Yeah.
[00:27:47] I mean, if you're as silly as it is, they're still, like...
[00:27:48] Oh, there's, like...
[00:27:49] The kids.
[00:27:50] And they're having, like, this emotional story connecting to this character.
[00:27:52] But, like...
[00:27:54] There's not any real emotional connection in this movie.
[00:27:57] Like, Frankie Freako.
[00:27:58] Like, I expected Frankie Freako to, like, teach the nerdy guy how to not be a dork all the time.
[00:28:03] Um...
[00:28:04] And it's really, like, barely in that, like, part of that.
[00:28:07] And it's, like, really not obvious.
[00:28:10] Um...
[00:28:10] Like, there's a twist at the end that I want to say.
[00:28:13] Of, uh...
[00:28:14] But what's, like, what's really going on.
[00:28:15] But, like...
[00:28:16] Yeah, like, for most of the movie, it's just, like, them fighting each other.
[00:28:20] And trashing the house.
[00:28:21] And then going to, like, the Freako world.
[00:28:23] And getting turned into slaves.
[00:28:25] And, like, going before, like, the big boss guy.
[00:28:29] And...
[00:28:29] Yeah, it's just, like...
[00:28:31] Just general zaniness.
[00:28:32] Like a big...
[00:28:34] Sluffy cartoon.
[00:28:35] Mm-hmm.
[00:28:36] Whereas, like, yeah, Psycho Goreman at least has, like, these kids.
[00:28:38] And I forget, like...
[00:28:39] They have this, like, relationship with their parents they're trying to, like, solve, I think.
[00:28:42] And then, like, yeah, like...
[00:28:43] They at least, like, make Psycho Goreman, like, not a killer anymore.
[00:28:47] Yeah.
[00:28:47] You know?
[00:28:48] It's not like they teach Frankie Freako to not be a party animal all the time, you know?
[00:28:51] And in return, like, the nerdy guy gets more confidence or something.
[00:28:56] Yeah, you know, it's...
[00:28:57] When I see the trailer, it reminds me of those old 80s, like, Munchies movies or something.
[00:29:02] Or Ghoulies or something.
[00:29:03] Yeah, the villain is actually called Munch.
[00:29:05] Is it really?
[00:29:06] Yeah.
[00:29:12] Yeah, theaters.
[00:29:12] I think it's only up there for a couple days.
[00:29:14] Yeah, I think a couple shows.
[00:29:15] But I guess the Blu-ray is coming in pretty quick, so it'll be easy to see soon.
[00:29:20] Is it worth getting on Blu-ray?
[00:29:21] I'm not going to.
[00:29:24] Yeah, like, I would watch it again, but I don't know if I'd, like, on purpose try to watch it, you know?
[00:29:29] Oh, okay.
[00:29:31] So I'll try to stream it then is what you're saying.
[00:29:34] Yeah.
[00:29:34] Like I said, I wouldn't mind watching it again, but I'm not going to, like, try to.
[00:29:38] You know, there's just not much there.
[00:29:41] Gotcha.
[00:29:41] Yeah.
[00:29:41] Yeah.
[00:29:41] Like, if I watch it again, it's because, like, I want to see, like, that office joke again or something, you know?
[00:29:46] Yeah.
[00:29:46] It's like, I love the story so much.
[00:29:50] Hmm.
[00:29:52] So, yeah.
[00:29:55] And, yeah.
[00:29:56] I also watched The Burning.
[00:29:59] The Tom Savini horror movie?
[00:30:02] Yeah.
[00:30:03] Yeah.
[00:30:04] Okay.
[00:30:05] Yeah.
[00:30:05] We were making fun of it as we were watching it pretty much.
[00:30:08] But, yeah.
[00:30:11] That's shockingly, like, you know, Fisher Stevens is in there.
[00:30:14] Holly Hunter's in there.
[00:30:15] Yeah.
[00:30:16] And Jason Alexander.
[00:30:17] Jason Alexander.
[00:30:18] And then, like, it's written by Harvey Weinstein.
[00:30:21] Yeah.
[00:30:22] Oh, yeah.
[00:30:23] It's one of the hardest commentaries to listen to.
[00:30:28] Not because it's the director's fault.
[00:30:30] And I have the Scream Factory, The Burning.
[00:30:34] And it's one of their very first ones.
[00:30:36] So maybe 2000 and 2011.
[00:30:40] And the director really thanks Harvey Weinstein for getting his movie made.
[00:30:43] I'm like, ugh.
[00:30:45] Yeah.
[00:30:46] This is age poorly.
[00:30:51] Yeah.
[00:30:52] And I was just, like, you know, watching the meta version of it where, like, Harvey Weinstein
[00:30:55] is the burned guy.
[00:30:57] Oh.
[00:30:58] There you go.
[00:30:59] You know.
[00:31:00] Like, he wrote this because, like, deep down he's, like, a burned, scarred guy.
[00:31:02] He's, like, just, you know, out to get women and stuff.
[00:31:06] Yep.
[00:31:06] I mean, that rap scene's really cool.
[00:31:09] Yeah.
[00:31:09] Yeah.
[00:31:11] But also, like, if I stood up in a canoe, I would not just, like, have the balance to
[00:31:14] cut three or four people up, you know?
[00:31:17] You'd fall on your face in the water.
[00:31:18] Well, that's not because you're not Cropsey, dude.
[00:31:20] So.
[00:31:21] Yeah.
[00:31:22] And then also, yeah, that, like, I don't know, concrete jungle that they have in the
[00:31:26] woods.
[00:31:28] Pretty much felt like, hey, we're at the actual Cropsey legend site.
[00:31:32] Let's, like, draw this out for 30 minutes.
[00:31:36] Pretty sure they recycled a bunch of shots where that one.
[00:31:39] And denim shirted dude is, like, just in this tiny barn, like, circling around the
[00:31:44] same stuff.
[00:31:45] I picked that up when I was watching.
[00:31:47] I did the same thing.
[00:31:48] I said, do they just slip shots?
[00:31:50] What is going on here?
[00:31:52] Yeah.
[00:31:54] Yeah.
[00:31:55] I guess, like, one more thing I watched, like, not hugely notable, but I saw this movie
[00:31:59] called Notice to Quit.
[00:32:01] Mm-hmm.
[00:32:01] It's about this guy who's a real estate agent in New York, and he's, like, down on his luck,
[00:32:08] but he has to get his daughter.
[00:32:12] He's divorced.
[00:32:13] He has, like, his daughter wants to hang out with him, but he, like, has to, like, sell
[00:32:17] or, like, rent some properties or sell some properties so he can make rent and everything
[00:32:21] by the end of the day.
[00:32:22] But he has to bring his daughter along with him, and it's kind of cute, but overall, like,
[00:32:27] not terribly interesting.
[00:32:31] Yeah.
[00:32:32] You just watch this loser, like, be more of a loser and then eventually be like, yeah,
[00:32:36] you know, at least I have my daughter.
[00:32:38] Yeah.
[00:32:40] So the world's okay.
[00:32:43] Yeah, you know, kids make the world fun.
[00:32:45] But it's, like, one of a bunch of movies, like, at the Mills that, like, I haven't seen trailers
[00:32:49] for, and it's, like, only out around for, like, a week or two.
[00:32:55] Yeah.
[00:32:56] What'd you watch?
[00:32:58] You know, I just keep on my spooky season going.
[00:33:03] So I've been, and I'm closing on a house, and I'm selling my house, so I'm kind of trying
[00:33:08] not to spend a shit ton of money because all I'm doing is spending a shit ton of money on
[00:33:12] inspections and stuff.
[00:33:14] Yeah.
[00:33:14] Um, so, uh, I watched, uh, 2023's Haunted Mansion again, which is, I think it's a better movie
[00:33:23] than people give it credit for.
[00:33:25] Um, how'd you even see it?
[00:33:26] It's so dark.
[00:33:28] And it's a dark movie.
[00:33:29] It's, uh, it's fun.
[00:33:31] Uh, there's a lot of cool callbacks to the ride.
[00:33:35] Um, it's, I think it's better than the Eddie Murphy one.
[00:33:38] Um, and yeah, it's just a fun little, uh, family, you know, spooky.
[00:33:44] Um, I watched Abbott Costello meet Frankenstein, which is brilliant.
[00:33:50] Um, you know, it's another film where they're not really making fun of the monsters, but the
[00:33:58] situation that Abbott Costello were in present the laugh.
[00:34:01] You know, um, uh, my favorite is always when, uh, Costello is in, um, his room and the Wolfman
[00:34:12] keeps on trying to get him and he just happens to move at the last second before he's, he's
[00:34:17] got by the Wolfman.
[00:34:18] Um, it, it, it's a brilliant movie and it's really fun.
[00:34:22] Um, you know, your favorite type of movies, 1940s, uh, black and white films.
[00:34:27] Um, yeah, just mainline that for me.
[00:34:30] Yeah.
[00:34:31] And, uh, the last two things I watched, I watched them last night is, uh, I watched
[00:34:35] Terrifier one and Terrifier two.
[00:34:38] Um, which is, which is, which is really interesting to watch back to back.
[00:34:44] Um, because it's unrelenting violence and sadism and torture.
[00:34:51] It's like, can they be classified as stuff films at this point?
[00:34:54] Um, I, I mean, yeah, I mean, fuck.
[00:34:58] Um, yeah, probably.
[00:35:00] Uh, because you know, the, one of the reasons why the writer director still finances them
[00:35:07] is because he doesn't want studios to tell him what he can put in them because he wants
[00:35:11] to keep it that extreme.
[00:35:13] So, you know, they're still really fun and I still really like them, but it definitely
[00:35:18] takes a certain kind of person to like those movies.
[00:35:20] Um, it's not a horror movie.
[00:35:22] I, even if you like horror films, I won't be like, you know what?
[00:35:25] You need to see Terrifier.
[00:35:26] You know, you need to see a woman sawed in half from her groin to her, to her head.
[00:35:31] Yeah.
[00:35:32] And then, then, you know, for 30 straight minutes.
[00:35:34] Yeah.
[00:35:35] Then, you know that you're good to go.
[00:35:37] Um, so yeah, that's all I really watched.
[00:35:40] I've been starting to get back into horror movies.
[00:35:43] I have and having fun watching them because I do love horror movies and sometimes I don't
[00:35:48] think I exploit me having all these movies I own enough.
[00:35:54] Um, it seems sometimes I'm always chasing, you know, the new thing.
[00:35:59] Uh, so lately I've been watching a lot of movies I've owned and it's been fun.
[00:36:05] Uh, which brings me to next week.
[00:36:08] We're seeing Terrifier 3.
[00:36:10] Um, on that Saturday night, the movie.
[00:36:13] I looked, it's not playing in a lot of places.
[00:36:16] Um, should be.
[00:36:17] It's at the Alamo.
[00:36:18] Is it at the Alamo?
[00:36:22] Man, let me, let me bring up my handy dandy Alamo app.
[00:36:26] Yeah.
[00:36:27] Thursday.
[00:36:28] Thursday.
[00:36:29] Wow.
[00:36:29] There it is.
[00:36:30] So maybe we'll do two.
[00:36:31] Maybe we'll do a Saturday night and Terrifier.
[00:36:34] And I actually think piece by piece looks interesting too.
[00:36:37] Yeah.
[00:36:38] I mean, um, I mean, I'm not the biggest Pharrell Williams fan, but I mean, it looks like an
[00:36:43] interesting way to tell a biography.
[00:36:45] Yeah.
[00:36:47] Um, I feel like we've got to get on a film explosion for this month.
[00:36:52] We do.
[00:36:53] That would be, uh, October 20th.
[00:36:56] We'll be recording film explosion 2004.
[00:37:00] Um, cause that's a day I think you marked, right?
[00:37:04] Yeah.
[00:37:05] Okay.
[00:37:05] However.
[00:37:07] Yeah.
[00:37:07] I've recently been informed.
[00:37:08] There is not a show.
[00:37:09] Oh yeah.
[00:37:10] The birthday party is one.
[00:37:11] So if we do it in the evening, we're good.
[00:37:13] Uh, well, that's what time you usually want to do it.
[00:37:15] Right.
[00:37:15] Yeah.
[00:37:16] Yeah.
[00:37:17] That's fine with me.
[00:37:17] And it actually, it works out because it's a Sunday.
[00:37:20] I can start because yeah.
[00:37:23] Is there a practice game that day?
[00:37:25] Uh, no, I have it the, this week.
[00:37:28] That's why I couldn't do it this week.
[00:37:30] Um, I mean next week I don't, but if all goes according to plan, I'm closing on my house
[00:37:35] on the 23rd.
[00:37:37] So I have to keep packing and move out.
[00:37:39] Um, so yeah, at nighttime would be fine.
[00:37:45] Awesome.
[00:37:45] Awesome.
[00:37:47] Yeah.
[00:37:47] And, um, I mean, I, it's not done till it's done, Brad, but it looks like I'll have my
[00:37:54] new home.
[00:37:54] There'll be a basement that will have a podcasting area.
[00:37:58] That was better.
[00:37:59] Yeah.
[00:37:59] Yeah.
[00:38:00] I mean, that's why I told my wife, I'm like, we're getting a divorce if this doesn't happen.
[00:38:03] And she's like, okay, here's the divorce papers.
[00:38:05] I'm just kidding.
[00:38:08] Um, yeah.
[00:38:09] Uh, feel free to invite me over to, uh, you know, make it accurate to what we need.
[00:38:16] Yeah.
[00:38:17] Yeah.
[00:38:17] Well, uh, when I get all my stuff in there and we, you know, look around and we'll see
[00:38:21] what we can do.
[00:38:24] You're going to need to, you're going to install like a steel door so that, you know, none of
[00:38:28] this shit gets stolen, you know?
[00:38:30] Yeah.
[00:38:32] I heard there's a lot of trouble in the green mountain area of Lakewood.
[00:38:39] Um, so yeah, until next week, see you at the movie.
