[00:00:52] I'm sorry. Take it outside.
[00:01:02] Hey, everybody.
[00:01:16] Welcome to Reel Nerds Podcast.
[00:01:19] Unofficially the official podcast of all your movie needs.
[00:01:24] I am Ryan.
[00:01:26] I am joined by my buddy Brad.
[00:01:29] What's up?
[00:01:30] And for 14 years, we have seen a new movie
[00:01:33] and we've podcasted it to the world.
[00:01:36] This week, we saw Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
[00:01:41] Stay tuned.
[00:01:42] We'll recommend the film or not play the trailer
[00:01:44] and then spoil the film.
[00:01:46] We'll also talk about movie news and what we watch throughout the week.
[00:01:50] Brad, how was your week?
[00:01:52] I went to a Colorado Springs to screen a bunch of my films.
[00:01:56] How's that?
[00:01:57] Nice. It was nice.
[00:01:58] It was a pleasure to be there as always.
[00:02:00] It's the Colorado Short Circuit Festival.
[00:02:03] Done it a couple times before and yeah,
[00:02:05] I had three films screened there and yeah,
[00:02:07] just watched a bunch of way better films than mine.
[00:02:12] No.
[00:02:14] So yeah, I found out that one of the ones that was there
[00:02:18] is actually going to be in the Denver Film Festival
[00:02:20] and it's like one of my favorite films from the group.
[00:02:24] So yeah. Very cool.
[00:02:26] How's your week?
[00:02:29] Well, good.
[00:02:30] You know, just worked all week.
[00:02:34] Working and watching movies.
[00:02:36] That's what we do.
[00:02:37] Pretty much nothing cool.
[00:02:41] Maybe one day I'll have something really cool to report.
[00:02:45] Well, there's always that.
[00:02:46] Next week, I'll say there's always that real.
[00:02:49] There's documentary to do.
[00:02:52] Correct. But we should do.
[00:02:55] Yeah. Anyway, it's really riveting week we were having here.
[00:03:00] Yeah, very much so this week we saw Beetlejuice.
[00:03:10] Beetlejuice.
[00:03:10] Afterlife.
[00:03:12] Yeah, not really.
[00:03:15] Yeah, this movie was like I keep telling people it felt like
[00:03:20] they had four people write separate scripts
[00:03:22] and then they all turn them in and then they said like,
[00:03:25] great, we're going to make all four of these.
[00:03:27] And that's this movie.
[00:03:29] It was.
[00:03:30] You know, it's cool seeing a lot of those characters back,
[00:03:33] but there was so much stuff in this movie
[00:03:37] that it was overwhelming and not very interesting to me.
[00:03:42] So, yeah.
[00:03:44] Yeah, I think it was fun.
[00:03:49] But yeah, you know, when I went and I thought took my family
[00:03:54] because Laura and Kellan love the first Beetlejuice.
[00:03:58] I've always been lukewarm to it.
[00:04:01] I mean, I think Beetlejuice as a character is really fun.
[00:04:04] Just the world never really captured my imagination or attention.
[00:04:10] So I was excited to see it because my family was.
[00:04:14] But I'm in the same boat.
[00:04:16] We'll talk about it in the spoilers, but it seemed a lot of half
[00:04:19] cooked story ideas that never really paid off.
[00:04:25] But here's the trailer for the second journey of Beetlejuice.
[00:04:29] When you're all driving carpool and banging your Pilates
[00:04:38] instructors to fill the empty voids in your life,
[00:04:40] we'll see who gets the last laugh.
[00:04:53] My mom grew up here.
[00:04:55] That old house on the hill.
[00:04:56] Wait, the ghost house?
[00:04:57] Is your mom Lydia Dietz?
[00:04:59] Unfortunately, she's a legend.
[00:05:03] The living, the dead.
[00:05:05] Can they coexist?
[00:05:08] Now's my chance.
[00:05:11] Ghosts aren't real.
[00:05:12] Only global people believe that kind of crap.
[00:05:15] I can't believe I'm doing this.
[00:05:18] Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
[00:05:24] You need to help me save my daughter.
[00:05:26] But how do I know that you're going to keep your word?
[00:05:28] I swear on my dead mother's soul.
[00:05:31] You and the boys stand guard.
[00:05:38] Nobody gets through.
[00:05:40] Let's go honey.
[00:05:47] Now is this post?
[00:05:48] Ever seen that chip before my life or after life.
[00:05:56] Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
[00:06:00] I'm needed upstairs.
[00:06:02] Bob, go down the floor.
[00:06:04] Here you go.
[00:06:08] Who wants to go first?
[00:06:09] All right, I will.
[00:06:12] See, I'm willing to do the work.
[00:06:18] Do that thing for my dream.
[00:06:20] Really more nightmare material.
[00:06:24] Confronting the unknown,
[00:06:26] conquering your fears.
[00:06:28] There's nothing harder.
[00:06:40] Going to the special occasion,
[00:06:42] but right now with like a little privacy.
[00:06:51] Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
[00:06:52] It takes place in real time going forward.
[00:06:57] So 36 years.
[00:07:02] And they go back to,
[00:07:04] I don't remember the name of the city.
[00:07:05] It's winter or something.
[00:07:07] And because Lydia's grandfather
[00:07:11] or father died
[00:07:14] in a shark attack
[00:07:17] and Lydia is now in a hospital.
[00:07:18] A very popular TV medium that can talk to the dead,
[00:07:22] which if you remember from the first one,
[00:07:24] that's what she can do.
[00:07:25] She has a daughter who doesn't like her
[00:07:30] and she had a husband who died
[00:07:32] and now she has a new boyfriend.
[00:07:35] And who's a producer on her show?
[00:07:37] Yeah, it was a producer.
[00:07:38] Again, it's a lot.
[00:07:40] And this is just Lydia's story.
[00:07:42] Exactly.
[00:07:44] So yeah, they go back home.
[00:07:46] They,
[00:07:47] she's getting visions of Beetlejuice
[00:07:50] because he still wants to marry her.
[00:07:54] Beetlejuice is in the afterlife,
[00:07:55] who's being chased by his first wife
[00:07:58] who led to his death and he killed her.
[00:08:03] But we don't know really.
[00:08:05] So this is my problem with the movie
[00:08:08] is I thought, you know,
[00:08:11] some of the effects are really cool.
[00:08:12] I liked all the
[00:08:14] the duges that worked for Beetlejuice.
[00:08:16] I thought looked really cool.
[00:08:17] Yeah, I like the return to practical stuff.
[00:08:19] That was great.
[00:08:19] Yeah.
[00:08:22] But the biggest story
[00:08:23] and I talked to my wife about this
[00:08:25] in the whole film that I felt
[00:08:28] was the really big disappointment
[00:08:30] with his wife.
[00:08:31] I didn't understand her motivation
[00:08:33] and she kind of just went away.
[00:08:36] She was very easily defeated.
[00:08:38] Yeah.
[00:08:39] Yeah, like I said before,
[00:08:41] so the first movie is
[00:08:43] these two people in this cute
[00:08:45] country house die and then
[00:08:47] they deal with the afterlife
[00:08:48] and then their whole rest of the movie is them trying.
[00:08:51] It's you know, them trying to exercise
[00:08:53] the living people out of their house
[00:08:56] and Beetlejuice is like this.
[00:09:00] Kind of prankster, I guess.
[00:09:01] Prankster like kind of in the middle of it
[00:09:03] trying to like disrupt everything.
[00:09:06] But yeah, this movie has Lydia
[00:09:08] dealing with the fact that she.
[00:09:12] Like can see ghosts,
[00:09:14] but not enough.
[00:09:17] She's like she can't see some,
[00:09:19] but mainly because she also has
[00:09:21] a drug problem with pills.
[00:09:26] Yeah.
[00:09:28] Touched on for like two minutes and never brought up again.
[00:09:30] Yeah. And then the producer
[00:09:32] like wants to also marry her
[00:09:34] and he's trying to like use her to further his career.
[00:09:37] And then
[00:09:40] Lydia's mom
[00:09:43] is Delia's like
[00:09:45] sort of upset about losing her husband,
[00:09:47] but not really.
[00:09:49] And then
[00:09:51] her daughter
[00:09:52] is still upset about
[00:09:54] her own dad dying years ago
[00:09:57] and is trying to like also save the world.
[00:10:01] So she's in college
[00:10:02] trying to like do conservation efforts
[00:10:05] and then
[00:10:06] like in the middle of the movie
[00:10:08] her storyline really gets started
[00:10:09] when she meets this boy in a tree house.
[00:10:11] Yeah.
[00:10:12] Yeah, which leads to this.
[00:10:16] I thought was the most interesting plot line
[00:10:18] where that boy is actually dead
[00:10:21] and she herself can also see dead people.
[00:10:23] But he is a serial killer
[00:10:25] who killed his own parents
[00:10:26] has been like stuck living in that house.
[00:10:30] So but just when you're excited about that
[00:10:33] they off that kid
[00:10:34] in the most hilarious way.
[00:10:36] Oh yeah.
[00:10:38] Signing him out.
[00:10:39] Yeah.
[00:10:40] And her dad is randomly the guy who knows
[00:10:44] because her dad died
[00:10:46] I guess from being eaten by piranhas.
[00:10:49] Oh yeah.
[00:10:51] He shows up later in the movie
[00:10:52] and kind of like
[00:10:53] oh we get to reconnect with this guy
[00:10:55] and
[00:10:57] finally I forget
[00:10:58] Lydia's daughter's name is even
[00:11:00] say Wednesday.
[00:11:05] Yeah.
[00:11:05] So she like finally realizes that
[00:11:07] her mom isn't making the shit up.
[00:11:10] And then yeah the corpse bride
[00:11:11] chamber and works as a corpse bride in
[00:11:15] she's seeking revenge
[00:11:17] like
[00:11:19] like she poisoned Beetlejuice
[00:11:21] and now
[00:11:22] and he killed her back.
[00:11:24] That's Astrid is her daughter's name.
[00:11:26] Astrid yeah.
[00:11:28] So yeah she just wanders around
[00:11:30] killing other random people
[00:11:31] to get to Beetlejuice
[00:11:32] and then when she finally does
[00:11:34] I don't understand the purpose
[00:11:36] and why she was so dangerous.
[00:11:38] Yeah like that's the biggest thing
[00:11:40] is like the movie starts with that
[00:11:41] of like oh there's a big threat
[00:11:44] she's gonna like she's killing all these other people
[00:11:45] it's got to lead to something important
[00:11:46] and people just like
[00:11:48] well if I get married I don't have to deal with her
[00:11:49] and like so he manufactures
[00:11:52] another wedding with Lydia
[00:11:53] and when she
[00:11:56] corpse bride finally shows up
[00:11:58] she just gets sucked into like
[00:12:00] sandworm land
[00:12:01] and that's it.
[00:12:03] Problem solved.
[00:12:06] Yeah.
[00:12:07] And yeah it's not like
[00:12:09] Oh and then there's the
[00:12:10] freaking Willem Dafoe.
[00:12:12] Oh that's right.
[00:12:13] Former actor.
[00:12:15] He's playing a detective.
[00:12:17] It's fun but like why?
[00:12:19] Like what he didn't
[00:12:20] he doesn't solve anything
[00:12:21] like he's just there.
[00:12:23] Yeah I agree it's
[00:12:24] like the movie's like
[00:12:26] I wouldn't say it's not fun
[00:12:28] but it seems you know directionless
[00:12:30] and a lot of
[00:12:32] like I said at the beginning
[00:12:33] a lot of loose plot threads
[00:12:35] and I forgot some of you brought
[00:12:37] you know you brought him up
[00:12:38] and also
[00:12:41] Lydia's step mom
[00:12:42] kills herself on accident
[00:12:44] Oh yeah.
[00:12:46] Then goes and meets her husband
[00:12:48] who could still talk even though
[00:12:49] he's missing the top half of his body
[00:12:51] Yeah.
[00:12:53] And then like
[00:12:55] yeah she's in the afterlife
[00:12:56] and like everyone around her is just like
[00:12:58] oh well that's a bummer
[00:13:00] I know.
[00:13:01] I mean I guess
[00:13:02] Dealia had it coming
[00:13:04] she was kind of negligent with those snakes.
[00:13:07] Yep.
[00:13:08] But yeah no one's really broken up about it.
[00:13:12] Yeah.
[00:13:13] It's just so unfocused like
[00:13:17] before the movie came out
[00:13:18] I started watching like the old cartoon show
[00:13:21] streaming on Pluto TV or something
[00:13:22] and like I kind of expected like
[00:13:24] okay this is an opportunity for
[00:13:27] Beelze to come back
[00:13:28] and like haunt Lydia
[00:13:29] but like them also work together
[00:13:32] instead of against each other
[00:13:33] to maybe stop that serial killer kid
[00:13:36] from like corrupting his daughter
[00:13:37] her daughter
[00:13:40] So.
[00:13:40] Yeah that would have been like
[00:13:42] if they focused on that story
[00:13:43] and
[00:13:46] Beedle used that as leverage
[00:13:48] to marry Lydia
[00:13:49] then I'm like okay cool
[00:13:50] because then you could cut out
[00:13:52] the corpse bride
[00:13:54] you know
[00:13:55] her step mom dying
[00:13:58] her marrying
[00:14:00] even you know what the fuck that dude's name is
[00:14:03] yeah
[00:14:03] or like the kid like
[00:14:07] is trying to cross over
[00:14:08] so he can wreak havoc in the afterlife
[00:14:10] and unleash people like the corpse bride
[00:14:12] Yeah
[00:14:13] and like suddenly Beelze was like oh shit
[00:14:16] like this woman can actually kill me
[00:14:18] and take me away from the afterlife
[00:14:19] or something
[00:14:21] Yeah because even Beedle used doesn't he
[00:14:23] like he blows up like a balloon at the end
[00:14:25] and pops
[00:14:26] like
[00:14:28] what's going on
[00:14:29] I don't get it
[00:14:32] and the whole time they're singing
[00:14:33] Godsford Park
[00:14:34] I was just thinking of weird Al Yankovic
[00:14:36] like
[00:14:37] Oh MacArthur Park yeah
[00:14:39] Yeah
[00:14:40] Yeah MacArthur Park I mean
[00:14:42] Yeah
[00:14:42] Jurassic Park is frightening in the dark
[00:14:46] Yeah all the song choices were just like
[00:14:49] I don't know
[00:14:49] I was never like
[00:14:51] Gaga over the
[00:14:52] Deo song
[00:14:53] Like that was never like a sequence
[00:14:54] it was like
[00:14:55] obviously people love it but I was never like
[00:14:57] oh that's the best part of the movie
[00:14:59] But yeah like the MacArthur Park
[00:15:01] and like the Soul Train
[00:15:03] were like really overplayed
[00:15:05] like oh we get it Soul Train got it
[00:15:07] but it comes back like four times
[00:15:09] Yeah
[00:15:12] I don't understand
[00:15:13] so if they get on the Soul Train
[00:15:15] and they leave
[00:15:17] they can never come back
[00:15:18] and they can't hang out in the afterlife
[00:15:20] I don't know what the rules are
[00:15:22] because it doesn't make sense
[00:15:23] I mean I would rather
[00:15:25] just hang out in the afterlife
[00:15:26] and haunt people
[00:15:28] you know
[00:15:29] Yeah
[00:15:31] and talk with them
[00:15:32] A lot less world building of the afterlife
[00:15:34] than the first one
[00:15:35] you know like the first one had
[00:15:36] like the handbook that
[00:15:37] recently deceased and then
[00:15:39] Yeah you accept what's going on
[00:15:42] Barb and
[00:15:43] what Alcbaldwin's like they just
[00:15:45] they had to learn
[00:15:46] as the movie went along
[00:15:48] but yeah I don't really like
[00:15:49] learn anything about this
[00:15:52] I didn't even know what Beal Jesus job is
[00:15:54] like he has all those bobs
[00:15:55] I'm like oh what do they do
[00:15:56] just paperwork
[00:15:59] Yeah I guess
[00:16:00] I don't know
[00:16:01] and I mean Michael Keaton was fun in it
[00:16:03] but
[00:16:05] you know
[00:16:06] it's just there
[00:16:07] I don't know
[00:16:09] Yeah there's a lack of like
[00:16:10] you know like the stretching of the face
[00:16:12] like there's a stretching of the face
[00:16:13] in the finale
[00:16:13] with like the CGI
[00:16:15] like people getting stuck in their cell phone
[00:16:16] but like
[00:16:17] it was cool in the original movie when like
[00:16:18] the you know
[00:16:20] homeowners would like
[00:16:22] you know do that effect
[00:16:23] and like Beal Jesus
[00:16:24] with the like
[00:16:26] Carnival head
[00:16:27] and the like the
[00:16:28] rolling out arms stuff
[00:16:29] like there's a distinct lack of stuff like that
[00:16:31] in this movie that was like
[00:16:32] kind of bomb by
[00:16:33] Yeah I guess the
[00:16:34] the worst
[00:16:35] or the silliest thing that
[00:16:37] I seem I kind of enjoyed was
[00:16:39] the Beetlejuice baby was kind of funny
[00:16:43] you remind me of
[00:16:45] a garbage Pell kit or something
[00:16:46] Yeah God I forgot that was the ending
[00:16:49] Yeah
[00:16:52] Which I can remember was it a dream?
[00:16:54] I don't remember
[00:16:54] I don't know
[00:16:55] I think so
[00:16:56] it's just so unfocused that
[00:16:58] I don't know
[00:17:01] I do not know
[00:17:02] So yeah
[00:17:03] that's that's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
[00:17:06] Hey
[00:17:06] this is a big news story of the week
[00:17:10] It's Real News
[00:17:16] Good news Brad
[00:17:18] if you were worried about it
[00:17:20] because I actually
[00:17:21] I kept on saying
[00:17:23] when is
[00:17:23] when are they going to announce anything for Spider-Man 4?
[00:17:27] I mean the last Spider-Man movie
[00:17:28] made almost $2 billion
[00:17:31] and
[00:17:33] they finally announced
[00:17:35] that they're
[00:17:37] working on it and they've been working on it
[00:17:40] and they're looking to hire
[00:17:42] Destin Daniel Cretan
[00:17:44] Cretan Cretan
[00:17:46] I don't know how to pronounce his last name
[00:17:48] Maybe they're Cretan probably
[00:17:50] Cretan yeah
[00:17:51] who directed Shang-Chi
[00:17:53] and has Wonder Man
[00:17:55] coming out on Disney Plus
[00:17:59] has been tapped to
[00:18:00] direct the new Spider-Man movie
[00:18:02] which I'm all for I thought he did a great job
[00:18:04] the action scenes in Shang-Chi were awesome
[00:18:09] should be a yeah
[00:18:11] and it's I guess they must be
[00:18:13] I had a feeling they're kind of
[00:18:15] sneakily working on it
[00:18:16] because Marvel always has dates
[00:18:20] planted where they don't really announce the movie
[00:18:24] and dude can you believe
[00:18:25] No Way Home came out three years ago
[00:18:29] yeah yeah it's not terribly long
[00:18:32] for like I guess maybe a Marvel movie
[00:18:35] but like an average
[00:18:36] franchise movie like sometimes that's
[00:18:38] it doesn't seem like it was that long ago
[00:18:41] in my mind you know
[00:18:43] yeah well you watched a lot
[00:18:45] that's true and I also saw it in theaters this year
[00:18:47] but I think like
[00:18:49] yeah there is probably a little more delayed because
[00:18:52] just trying to figure out where
[00:18:53] the next direction for Marvel
[00:18:55] the Marvel Universe is headed
[00:18:58] Tom Holland said he was going to take a break
[00:19:00] for a while and he did
[00:19:01] I think he did a couple plays
[00:19:05] and he kind of took
[00:19:06] a year off so
[00:19:08] I mean he deserved to he literally worked on
[00:19:11] Spider-Man to Uncharted
[00:19:13] and write to Spider-Man so
[00:19:17] yeah it's fine
[00:19:18] yeah take some time off
[00:19:19] just get it right you know don't
[00:19:23] rush things yeah
[00:19:24] they have the same writers and
[00:19:26] I mean they stripped him back down to just being
[00:19:29] Spider-Man
[00:19:31] so I'm totally cool I still
[00:19:33] think if they did
[00:19:34] a spider slayer story would be really fun
[00:19:37] um
[00:19:38] well I heard Fige was saying like
[00:19:39] they're going to send him to space or something
[00:19:43] yeah uh I don't know
[00:19:45] they're like
[00:19:46] uh yeah we didn't say anything about him
[00:19:49] like it was a ground of Spider-Man
[00:19:51] but we didn't say like what ground he'd be on
[00:19:54] yeah
[00:19:55] you know everybody's clamoring for the venom thing
[00:19:57] but I don't want to see venom I want to
[00:19:59] I want to see like a new villain I think
[00:20:01] you know the spider slayers would be cool
[00:20:04] um
[00:20:04] you know just some guy who
[00:20:08] I guess make the stakes a little
[00:20:09] smaller kind of like a dock ox
[00:20:11] stakes or green goblin in the first
[00:20:13] one
[00:20:15] you know where I don't know spider
[00:20:17] slayers are right at King Havoc and
[00:20:19] Manhattan and he has to figure out
[00:20:21] why and
[00:20:21] something you don't need the Avengers for
[00:20:24] yeah and it'd be fun
[00:20:26] because I was thinking I guess there's this
[00:20:28] clause where Marvel
[00:20:30] and Sony can't
[00:20:32] use
[00:20:34] a villain that they use
[00:20:36] in the Sony movies
[00:20:38] in a Spider-Man MCU movie
[00:20:40] so they've already blown their
[00:20:42] load by not having
[00:20:44] Craven because you could do Craven's last
[00:20:47] hunt and people would love that one
[00:20:49] but
[00:20:50] I guess he had I mean is his movie coming out
[00:20:52] this year did you see the new trailer
[00:20:56] no they hide
[00:20:57] those uh
[00:20:59] animal powers I guess
[00:21:00] now right on conveniently I think they're
[00:21:02] writing that out it's like this oh that's right
[00:21:04] it's coming out in December
[00:21:07] it's only been played like two years
[00:21:09] I'm sure it's going to be great like Madame
[00:21:10] Webb yeah I think
[00:21:12] they're heavily re-editing it which does not
[00:21:14] I guess like usually doesn't
[00:21:16] yield great results either so we'll see
[00:21:18] yeah but you know what we'll see maybe it'll
[00:21:21] be great and we just
[00:21:23] don't know
[00:21:25] get ready for a three-picture
[00:21:27] Craven franchise Ryan
[00:21:30] finally
[00:21:30] one thing I've craved
[00:21:34] we watch
[00:21:35] films throughout the week
[00:21:36] in a segment we call
[00:21:38] what we've been watching
[00:21:41] so uh yeah
[00:21:43] this is the stuff we've been watching
[00:21:46] Brad what you watch this week
[00:21:47] actually real quick
[00:21:49] some other news that we kind of glossed
[00:21:51] over I think for a couple weeks is the Disney
[00:21:52] movie insiders is shutting down
[00:21:55] oh yeah
[00:21:56] I have 3200 points on there
[00:21:58] that I don't know what to do with
[00:22:01] huh suck oh I should look
[00:22:02] might try to get a D23 maybe I can get a D23 membership
[00:22:06] I think like
[00:22:07] 12,000 or 10,000
[00:22:08] are they 10? that's really went up
[00:22:10] yeah I was on there like most of it's just like
[00:22:13] Blu-rays
[00:22:14] and digital rewards
[00:22:16] so I'm just like well I have all these movies
[00:22:18] and digital words ain't nothing so
[00:22:21] yeah
[00:22:22] I'm like great I guess uh I hope you guys
[00:22:24] add some stuff later like most of the posters are gone
[00:22:27] yeah because oh yeah I think at that
[00:22:29] email isn't it supposed to end like next month
[00:22:31] December
[00:22:33] December yeah and you can't like
[00:22:34] you can't redeem all the gift cards are sold out
[00:22:36] so you can't redeem for gift cards sucks
[00:22:39] damn
[00:22:40] yeah
[00:22:40] let me bring up my app because I haven't been on it in a while
[00:22:44] so I had to download
[00:22:45] I forgot because they first thing they get rid of Disney movie club
[00:22:50] now this
[00:22:51] my only hope is that
[00:22:52] uh because they made a deal with
[00:22:54] Kino Lorber
[00:22:56] and Wally came out on criterion
[00:22:58] they're gonna start
[00:23:00] um I mean I get that they're big movies
[00:23:02] they probably won't do it
[00:23:04] but you know
[00:23:06] parcel out
[00:23:07] their
[00:23:09] movies so they get released on
[00:23:11] Blu-ray
[00:23:13] for 4k
[00:23:14] yeah they've only put like the heavy hitters on 4k
[00:23:17] so far
[00:23:18] yeah and I mean they've been getting better because
[00:23:21] uh
[00:23:22] Bob Iger is back in charge
[00:23:24] but
[00:23:26] at least they're still I mean the inside
[00:23:29] out steel books really nice that came out
[00:23:33] yeah
[00:23:35] yeah
[00:23:35] anyway
[00:23:35] yeah it's good
[00:23:39] I pre-ordered it at like $69
[00:23:40] it came down to like 38
[00:23:42] so I was like oh thank you
[00:23:43] yeah I think
[00:23:47] mine was 45 or something that sucks
[00:23:49] but yeah well I think
[00:23:51] with tax mine was like 45 something
[00:23:52] but yeah
[00:23:54] I watch this if this doesn't drop below
[00:23:57] like 50 bucks I'm gonna cancel this pre-order
[00:24:01] uh yeah so I watch this week
[00:24:03] uh for the first time in a long time
[00:24:05] I watched being John Malkovich
[00:24:08] I don't know I haven't seen that forever
[00:24:09] yeah which um
[00:24:11] I thought it was okay back then but like this time around
[00:24:13] I was like wow this is really good
[00:24:15] um
[00:24:16] yeah if you've forgotten it's the story of
[00:24:19] I forgot the characters names
[00:24:21] but uh
[00:24:23] oh my god I came in big
[00:24:25] John Cusack
[00:24:26] is a puppeteer
[00:24:28] um who lives with Cameron Diaz
[00:24:31] who hordes animals
[00:24:32] um
[00:24:33] and uh
[00:24:36] eventually he has to get
[00:24:38] a better job than just
[00:24:40] working puppeteering
[00:24:42] in the streets so he goes
[00:24:43] and works for this company that's like
[00:24:46] on the half floor of a big building
[00:24:48] um and
[00:24:49] as he's working there he discovers there's
[00:24:52] a little tunnel
[00:24:53] to the uh inside of John
[00:24:55] Malkovich's his head
[00:24:58] um and uh
[00:24:59] yeah it's really creative and
[00:25:01] uh
[00:25:04] wacky and interesting and
[00:25:06] yeah um
[00:25:08] definitely gonna be a pickup on my next
[00:25:10] uh
[00:25:11] criterion 50% off sale
[00:25:13] oh is that on criterion?
[00:25:15] it is
[00:25:17] huh
[00:25:19] so I think it's because I always go to their
[00:25:21] half off sale like a week later
[00:25:23] and people have like picked over
[00:25:25] stuff clean
[00:25:27] yeah um
[00:25:29] but yeah I can't ever oh I guess yeah
[00:25:31] now I'm picturing the actual
[00:25:34] box art
[00:25:35] yeah it's like that big eye on everybody
[00:25:37] yeah Malkovich is great in it and like the part where
[00:25:40] um
[00:25:41] Malkovich goes inside his own head and like they have
[00:25:44] his head
[00:25:45] CGI I don't know like all these people in a restaurant
[00:25:47] like for 1999 it's
[00:25:49] pretty seamless
[00:25:50] like
[00:25:52] um really convincing
[00:25:55] compositing work for the time
[00:25:56] like I was pretty impressed
[00:25:58] you know it's like stuff that
[00:26:00] they have trouble doing today
[00:26:01] even like Marvel movies
[00:26:04] uh so yeah
[00:26:06] uh yeah that's what I saw
[00:26:08] oh short and sweet
[00:26:10] like I've also been like
[00:26:12] working on
[00:26:14] stuff in the background I've just been
[00:26:16] watching like 80s music videos on Vivo
[00:26:18] so that's my favorite
[00:26:20] thing about my Hulu subscription
[00:26:22] is it has all those channels
[00:26:24] included
[00:26:26] and there's like seven or eight of them
[00:26:28] yeah and it's pretty sweet
[00:26:32] um yeah I
[00:26:34] watched um a few things
[00:26:35] I've been
[00:26:37] um watching Blu-ray
[00:26:39] that I own that I haven't watched
[00:26:41] but it just so happened that my
[00:26:43] random number picked
[00:26:45] uh on September
[00:26:47] like
[00:26:49] 6th or something
[00:26:50] nope before then like maybe the first
[00:26:52] day of September was
[00:26:55] Piranha 2
[00:26:57] um so I decided
[00:26:59] that I'll just start spooky season early
[00:27:01] um so I watched Piranha 2 which was
[00:27:02] James Cameron's first directed movie I
[00:27:05] believe and yeah it's
[00:27:07] not very good
[00:27:08] um but you know
[00:27:11] it exists. Is the dialogue terrible?
[00:27:13] uh yeah that I mean you just expect it
[00:27:15] right um the opening is these
[00:27:17] people like have sex
[00:27:19] in a shipwreck
[00:27:21] ship under water
[00:27:22] and then they're eaten by Piranha. I think
[00:27:25] you did this last week. I did do this last week
[00:27:27] now that I'm talking about it. Fuck
[00:27:29] did I talk about the Amityville
[00:27:31] horror? I don't think so.
[00:27:33] Okay so that's where I left up
[00:27:34] previously on real nerd
[00:27:37] I know as I started explaining it I go
[00:27:38] wait a minute I have said this before
[00:27:42] um so
[00:27:43] Shout Screen Factory
[00:27:44] put out 2005
[00:27:47] Amityville horror. No I talked
[00:27:48] about this one too didn't I?
[00:27:51] Uh maybe.
[00:27:53] You know what I do. I don't remember as much.
[00:27:55] Because if you look at it
[00:27:57] yep so I'm just going to skip over that one
[00:27:58] too. Um
[00:28:01] I'm totally
[00:28:03] uh locked in
[00:28:04] um but one for spooky season
[00:28:06] I did not talk about and I had never seen that I
[00:28:08] totally randomly picked um on Kino Lorber
[00:28:11] so Kino Lorber every once in a while does
[00:28:13] these sales where it's $5.99
[00:28:15] Blu-rays and
[00:28:17] you know when you get and it has free
[00:28:19] shipping at $35
[00:28:21] you can get like six movies and it costs
[00:28:23] like $37
[00:28:25] so I always do that and I get
[00:28:27] random ones um
[00:28:29] and one I got was called
[00:28:32] and soon
[00:28:33] the darkness
[00:28:35] um it's about these two
[00:28:37] English girls I literally had
[00:28:39] no idea what this movie was about. I didn't
[00:28:41] read any of the synopsis when I
[00:28:43] bought it. I literally just picked it because
[00:28:45] it's this girl running from this dude on the
[00:28:46] cover art and in my head I
[00:28:49] said oh this has to be a slasher movie
[00:28:50] it's not um at all
[00:28:53] um well
[00:28:54] maybe a little bit no I
[00:28:57] don't know it's like a thriller um
[00:28:59] anyways these uh
[00:29:01] two English girls are
[00:29:04] bicycling through the
[00:29:05] French countryside
[00:29:06] and
[00:29:08] they uh
[00:29:09] get into a fight so one of them leaves
[00:29:12] the other one alone
[00:29:14] and when
[00:29:15] she doesn't meet up with her an hour
[00:29:18] later she goes back to
[00:29:20] look for her she's missing and then this
[00:29:22] one guy comes up
[00:29:24] and he's the mysterious French guy
[00:29:26] and don't worry he smoked a lot of
[00:29:28] cigarettes in it um
[00:29:29] haha
[00:29:32] uh but then it's kind of a mystery
[00:29:34] of what happened to her and how it
[00:29:36] unravels and surprisingly
[00:29:38] the movie is pretty solid
[00:29:40] um
[00:29:42] after I watched I went
[00:29:43] on to IMDB and it has a pretty high rating
[00:29:46] um I think it's like
[00:29:47] 7.0 maybe 6.9
[00:29:50] um
[00:29:52] and what I really liked
[00:29:53] is you know
[00:29:55] Lorber did a 4k scan
[00:29:58] of it and the film looks incredible
[00:30:00] it's from 1970
[00:30:01] but the director
[00:30:03] shot it in a way where the greens look great
[00:30:05] um
[00:30:06] and it's like the movie is way better than I thought
[00:30:09] it was going to be um
[00:30:11] and it's not bad for just you know
[00:30:12] uh a blind buy
[00:30:14] just deciding to get one you know
[00:30:17] um so that was cool
[00:30:19] and the other movie I watched
[00:30:21] was captive wild woman
[00:30:24] which is part of
[00:30:25] uh another
[00:30:27] universal horse that that I got
[00:30:28] that was
[00:30:30] part of shout factory
[00:30:32] sell uh in February
[00:30:34] and it came with
[00:30:36] four universal monster
[00:30:38] ones and the reason I got it is normally they're $70
[00:30:41] and
[00:30:42] on the sale they were down to 24
[00:30:45] um
[00:30:45] and I picked this set
[00:30:48] because it was like monster
[00:30:50] gorilla people
[00:30:52] um and the
[00:30:54] uh the cover art is really misleading
[00:30:56] the cover art is some gorilla
[00:30:58] holding this scantily clad woman
[00:31:00] over its head
[00:31:01] um and
[00:31:03] I mean it's 1940 something so I knew it wasn't
[00:31:06] going to be you know crazy
[00:31:07] but I was expecting I don't know
[00:31:09] like a leopard print bikini or something
[00:31:12] and this crazy ape
[00:31:13] was eating people or something
[00:31:16] nope it's uh
[00:31:18] this doctor who
[00:31:20] takes this one woman's brain
[00:31:22] um
[00:31:23] um I'm sorry
[00:31:25] takes uh gorilla's brain
[00:31:26] and implants it in this woman
[00:31:29] who is able to tame
[00:31:31] lions and tigers
[00:31:33] in this uh
[00:31:35] circus
[00:31:37] and
[00:31:38] at one point she gets so mad
[00:31:41] at the guy because she kind of has a crush on him
[00:31:44] but he has a fiance
[00:31:45] that she turns into like a
[00:31:47] where gorilla lady
[00:31:49] because her animal side comes
[00:31:51] it's a weird fucking movie
[00:31:52] um it's so cheesy
[00:31:54] that it's somewhat enjoyable
[00:31:57] um
[00:31:59] and it was only like 67 minutes long
[00:32:01] so again not too bad
[00:32:03] it went by quickly
[00:32:04] um yeah so I mean
