[00:01:14] Hey, hey everybody. Welcome to Reel Nerds Podcast. I am Ryan and I am joined by my good old friend Brad.
[00:01:23] Brad, how are you today?
[00:01:25] I'm still here and I'm super excited because I found something I've been looking for for
[00:01:30] a very long time and it's going to be related.
[00:01:33] What did you find?
[00:01:35] Yesterday, early in the morning I went to Twist and Shout. I found an unopened factory-sealed Super Mario Brothers movie soundtrack CD.
[00:01:45] Wow!
[00:01:46] Yeah, which is really hard to find.
[00:01:49] And we're talking about the Bob Hopkins one, right?
[00:01:54] Yep, 1993. It's got music from Rockset, Extreme, Queen, Marky Mark, George Clinton.
[00:02:03] I remember the Marky Marks, what's Queen's songs in it?
[00:02:06] Yeah, what's Queen's song is in it? A Tire Mother Down.
[00:02:09] I don't remember that at all but it might be one of those songs that's in the background or something.
[00:02:15] So yeah, Walk the Dinosaur with the Goombas featuring George Clinton.
[00:02:22] Was it expensive CD?
[00:02:24] No, it was like eight bucks.
[00:02:25] Oh!
[00:02:26] Yeah, but here's the thing. It's sealed. It has never been opened.
[00:02:33] It's got that feature of the Smash Single sticker on it.
[00:02:36] But there's one of those cuts in the spine that retailers, when they expense out, start or whatever,
[00:02:45] that's slashed to the side so I'm like, it's technically not factory-sealed.
[00:02:50] Yes!
[00:02:50] So should I open it or leave it?
[00:02:56] Yeah, that's...
[00:02:57] It's also got one of those chrome hologram stickers that keeps the case closed.
[00:03:04] If you remember those.
[00:03:05] Oh yeah!
[00:03:07] So yeah, I want to copy the files to my computer.
[00:03:14] This is a hard thing to find.
[00:03:15] This is something super hard.
[00:03:17] On eBay for like, I don't know, 30 something dollars, 50 dollars, I don't know.
[00:03:23] Yeah, you know, I was at Twist and Shout and there's this Rod Stewart in Faith's CD that was out of print forever.
[00:03:34] I mean, no joke, I think it's been out of print since the first time CDs were out.
[00:03:39] So like 1990-ish.
[00:03:43] And it was always so hard to find.
[00:03:44] It's called Rod Stewart Faith's Coast to Coast Live Overture.
[00:03:49] And it was on VideoCassette and, I mean, VideoCassette, MusicCassette and Vinyl.
[00:03:56] You can find them pretty easily.
[00:03:58] But the CD was super hard to find.
[00:04:00] And the last time I was there, you know, I always check.
[00:04:03] And they had it and it was still like 30 dollars, but I mean...
[00:04:09] You know, you got it. When you see that stuff, you got to get it because you never know when somebody else is going to come along and be like,
[00:04:15] Oh, fuck the Mario soundtrack.
[00:04:17] Dude, yeah, so many times I've been to Twist and Shout and been like, oh, you know, the 4K Escape from New York show factor, the slip cover.
[00:04:25] You know, I'll pick that up later.
[00:04:27] Yeah.
[00:04:28] It's like it's out of print.
[00:04:30] Like you can't get this, the slip cover with it anymore.
[00:04:32] And yeah, there's like other things.
[00:04:34] I'm like, oh, I've been looking for this for a while, but I don't know.
[00:04:37] Probably not a good time to buy it, but yeah, I want this.
[00:04:39] And then sure enough next time I go back like gone.
[00:04:42] Yeah.
[00:04:42] And you always say to yourself, who the fuck bought that?
[00:04:46] Who is weird?
[00:04:47] Who's weird like me that wants this?
[00:04:49] And then you realize that we're all weird.
[00:04:52] Yeah.
[00:04:52] Who's looking for this at the same time I am?
[00:04:54] Yeah.
[00:04:56] Weird.
[00:04:57] It is.
[00:04:58] You know, in a way, sometimes I'm cool with it because I said, you know what someone appreciated that and I like that they appreciated it.
[00:05:05] So good on them.
[00:05:07] Yeah.
[00:05:09] So yeah.
[00:05:10] Nice.
[00:05:11] No, that's awesome.
[00:05:12] How about you?
[00:05:13] What's going with you?
[00:05:14] I just work all the time.
[00:05:16] I have nothing cool.
[00:05:19] I just work and then when I don't work, I have to take care of my kid and.
[00:05:24] Did she take her kid to wrestling?
[00:05:27] I did.
[00:05:28] I did take him for his birthday, which was really fun.
[00:05:31] You know, it's the, it's such a performance art, but there is an art and I've said this before that when someone is really good to control, you know, 20,000 people to chant stuff and do dances.
[00:05:48] And there is, I mean, I didn't really know anybody.
[00:05:51] I knew of them because I still follow the WWE on Facebook and stuff.
[00:05:56] But to say that I knew their moves or storylines or anything, that'd be a stretch.
[00:06:03] But you know, there's this guy named Dominic Mysterio and he understands how to be a heal, which is the bad guy term for wrestlers so well.
[00:06:18] He's, you know, like a coward and he knows how to play up the crowd and how he usually cheats to win.
[00:06:26] And it's just kind of fun to see that he understands his role and he does it so well that everybody booze him and, you know, jeers at him.
[00:06:36] And I was like, man, this kid and he has to be like, I don't know, 25, 26.
[00:06:41] He understands how to play to a crowd.
[00:06:44] Even though they quote unquote don't like him, there's an art to that.
[00:06:47] You know what I mean?
[00:06:48] There's an art to being able to perform and people not like you.
[00:06:52] And I was kind of in awe of how he was able to play the crowd.
[00:06:57] And I was like, damn, this kid knows what's up.
[00:06:59] I haven't seen someone play a crowd this well since The Rock.
[00:07:03] But it was fun, you know, the athleticism and all that jazz.
[00:07:09] And it was my kid's 10th birthday.
[00:07:12] So that's the big deal.
[00:07:15] They grow so fast.
[00:07:17] He sure do.
[00:07:19] Yeah, that's all I've been doing.
[00:07:21] If it's not work, then it's trying to get my kid to school and, you know, have adventures with him.
[00:07:28] And somewhere in there we see movies.
[00:07:30] And so we do.
[00:07:32] And I got a quick, I got an email from the principal of his school and he says, you know, I've seen that
[00:07:41] Kellen's been late a couple of times.
[00:07:43] Make sure that when he gets into the school, he goes straight to class and I want to say, oh, that's my fault.
[00:07:48] It's definitely not my kid's fault because the tardy bell rings at 750.
[00:07:53] And last week I got him to school twice back to back days right at 750.
[00:07:58] So by the time he gets to his classroom because the fifth grade is all the way in the back.
[00:08:02] So by the time he gets to his classroom, he's like, you know, two, three minutes late.
[00:08:06] And that's totally my fault.
[00:08:09] Poor kid.
[00:08:09] He's just like getting re-envised teacher.
[00:08:11] The principal calls him into his office.
[00:08:13] Hey, quit being late.
[00:08:15] My dad's fault.
[00:08:17] Don't blame your dad for your...
[00:08:19] Your father is a respected officer and you're going to blame him for you being late?
[00:08:24] A police officer never makes the mistake of being late.
[00:08:26] Yeah.
[00:08:27] Sorry, son.
[00:08:29] I read that email and I go, oh man, I just got called out by the principal.
[00:08:35] Come on son, take you to get some ice cream.
[00:08:37] Yeah.
[00:08:38] Sorry, sorry there champ.
[00:08:41] Slogger.
[00:08:43] But you can't be late to a movie at the Alamo, which where we saw our movie of the week,
[00:08:48] Didi.
[00:08:49] Stay tuned where we'll recommend the film or not play the trailer and then...
[00:08:52] It was so hard to spoil comedies, but we'll spoil the movie.
[00:08:56] And we'll also talk about the movies we watched throughout the week, because that's what we do.
[00:09:04] That's how we roll.
[00:09:07] No other podcast on the internet can do that for you.
[00:09:09] Yeah, no.
[00:09:10] We're just...
[00:09:11] Where else are we going to hear a story about finding the Mario Brothers soundtrack?
[00:09:15] A Rod Stewart album and me making my kid late to school and getting called out by the principal.
[00:09:20] Nowhere.
[00:09:21] Yeah.
[00:09:21] Except Real Nurse Podcast.
[00:09:24] No other podcast can give you that kind of entertainment.
[00:09:30] So Brad, this week we saw Didi.
[00:09:33] Do you recommend the film?
[00:09:35] Yeah, I think it's a nice film.
[00:09:39] Yeah, again, it's like a comedy, so it's not like a ton of surprise.
[00:09:45] Like, oh, I didn't see that coming.
[00:09:46] It's just kind of like a slice of life thing.
[00:09:48] You're kind of just longing for the ride and it's a nice, sweet coming of age tale.
[00:09:53] I agree.
[00:09:55] It's, you know, even though it's a comedy, there's some drama built into it, but it's really well made.
[00:10:02] And I think the kid in it's really good.
[00:10:06] Here's a trailer for Didi.
[00:10:18] What was your name again?
[00:10:19] Chris. All my friends used to call me a wang-wang.
[00:10:21] What should I call you?
[00:10:27] I'm never going to survive high school.
[00:10:29] You're like a lizard with your scaly-ass eczema skin.
[00:10:31] It's a face!
[00:10:32] Ah, lizard bitch!
[00:10:33] You just call me a bitch!
[00:10:35] Bitch?
[00:10:35] What a bitch?
[00:10:37] Nobody wants you on that drag me down.
[00:10:41] Watch how you can kill me.
[00:10:43] But I'll just let you die.
[00:10:46] Next, a Chris Piedadio.
[00:10:53] You're wang-wang.
[00:10:54] No name and trip.
[00:10:55] You got strong ass teeth.
[00:10:57] You're handsome.
[00:10:57] That's what many likes you, baby!
[00:11:02] Lean into the person until your lips touch.
[00:11:06] Have you ever played the nervous game before?
[00:11:09] Are you nervous?
[00:11:11] Yes.
[00:11:12] What?
[00:11:13] I am nervous. I just...
[00:11:15] I'm sorry.
[00:11:27] Didi, are you sad?
[00:11:30] Fine.
[00:11:35] I'm thinking of you. Come on.
[00:11:37] I don't know how you're going to do this.
[00:11:39] I'm gonna win the McCall one.
[00:11:40] I'm your son!
[00:11:41] I'm sorry, I'm not bragging right to your friends!
[00:11:46] If you guys need a filmer, I film.
[00:11:51] So, who are those more people you've been hanging out with?
[00:11:54] Friends.
[00:11:55] Promise me you won't do anything stupid.
[00:11:57] AC, Chris! AC, Chris! AC, Chris! AC, Chris! AC, Chris!
[00:12:02] Please don't tell mom.
[00:12:07] Mom, are you ashamed of me?
[00:12:11] I am guilty.
[00:12:13] No, you're careful.
[00:12:14] I'm asking you.
[00:12:15] No, I love you.
[00:12:16] Didi, you may just say it's my dream.
[00:12:22] But sometimes it's a little hard.
[00:12:33] So we got a flash all the way back to 2008?
[00:12:40] Where this movie takes place?
[00:12:42] I mean, I did see this movie this week,
[00:12:43] so I don't know why I'm having trouble remembering it.
[00:12:47] So we go back to 2008 with a boy named Chris.
[00:12:50] He lives in California,
[00:12:54] and it's a typical coming of age tell in some regards
[00:12:58] where his family kind of doesn't get him.
[00:13:02] He really likes to make movies,
[00:13:05] and this is kind of the time when YouTube was kind of taking off,
[00:13:10] if I remember correctly.
[00:13:12] Yeah.
[00:13:12] And he decides he wants to make skate videos,
[00:13:20] and really it starts with him just hanging out with his friend.
[00:13:25] And yeah, he's making videos.
[00:13:28] His family doesn't approve of him.
[00:13:31] His sister is going off to college soon,
[00:13:34] so he'll be the only kid in the house.
[00:13:36] Yeah, and his friends are kind of like in that middle ground
[00:13:40] as everyone gets older and finds new interests,
[00:13:44] his friend group is kind of leaving him,
[00:13:47] and he's kind of desperate to still have friends in some capacity.
[00:13:53] Yeah, and it's kind of cool because I love films
[00:14:01] that represent maybe an underserved community,
[00:14:07] and I obviously don't know what it's like to go up as an Asian kid
[00:14:13] and the pressure that he's under,
[00:14:17] and I kind of liked a look into another family.
[00:14:21] You know what I mean?
[00:14:22] Yeah.
[00:14:23] A story we don't get to see very often.
[00:14:26] Also one where I guess their dad works overseas
[00:14:29] doing some big national company,
[00:14:32] and so it's just his mom and his grandma really there
[00:14:36] as the adults to take care of him.
[00:14:38] And yeah, obviously the grandma is just very traditional values.
[00:14:46] And his mom is like, it's so sad,
[00:14:47] she's trying to be an artist.
[00:14:49] She really wants to be an artist,
[00:14:51] and her kid's just getting to know her art.
[00:14:54] Yeah.
[00:14:56] Yeah, and she is doing her best as pretty much a single parent
[00:15:01] in everything, but yeah.
[00:15:03] Yeah, and it's his mom, she's great in it.
[00:15:09] Joan Shen is amazing in this movie.
[00:15:14] Yeah, it's a cool look into,
[00:15:17] I like I said an underserved community I think in films
[00:15:22] because as we've seen so many film,
[00:15:26] the Asian community is usually locked into action movies
[00:15:28] or kung fu movies.
[00:15:31] So it's always cool to see a coming of age story
[00:15:35] from a different perspective and done really well.
[00:15:38] I mean, we're really well done and it's funny.
[00:15:41] Yeah, like there's been a lot of good ones
[00:15:43] that you like drive my car in Minari.
[00:15:47] Oh, I freaking adore Minari.
[00:15:49] Yeah, everything everywhere all at once.
[00:15:51] It's more of a genre thing,
[00:15:53] but yeah, it's just good to see the kind of stuff.
[00:15:56] Yeah, but even with everything everywhere all at once
[00:15:59] kind of gives, it's a genre film,
[00:16:03] but it's also about how difficult
[00:16:05] and how mean the mom is to her daughter.
[00:16:09] And this you kind of get the reverse of,
[00:16:13] you mean you touch on it, the mom's struggling
[00:16:14] and the kids kind of adding to her insecurities
[00:16:21] and it's a really touching film.
[00:16:25] I really enjoyed it.
[00:16:27] It's also has great cringy moments,
[00:16:32] he's just seeing kids being awkward
[00:16:34] and making the wrong decisions sometimes.
[00:16:37] And there's also some great surreal things.
[00:16:39] Like I wish that there's more stuff like the talking fish
[00:16:43] throughout the movie.
[00:16:46] And then although...
[00:16:47] Let's shout out to an old Dick Van Dyke episode.
[00:16:50] And then all the fun like AOL instant messenger chat stuff
[00:16:54] of like typing something out and then backtracking it.
[00:16:58] That reminded me of that time so much is AIM
[00:17:03] and I remember he had to have a cool handle for your AIM.
[00:17:12] Is American online even still a thing anymore?
[00:17:15] I don't think so.
[00:17:19] Also the skate video stuff,
[00:17:21] just we were making videos on mini-DV at the same time too.
[00:17:26] So that just brought back a lot of it.
[00:17:29] Yeah, when he blows that shot and everything,
[00:17:32] those guys were harsh about that but they would use bags too anyway.
[00:17:37] In case you're wondering AOL is now part of Yahoo.
[00:17:41] Really?
[00:17:42] Are they part of Warner Bros?
[00:17:43] Because it used to be AOL Time Warner.
[00:17:46] Nope, they're owned,
[00:17:47] they're brand marketed by Yahoo and they're just AOL.com.
[00:17:52] They've been around for 41 years.
[00:17:56] Actually, I guess probably like the sign-on is different
[00:17:59] but I'm sure the email still worked
[00:18:00] because Hollywood Babylon has the HBO at AOL email.
[00:18:05] I mean according to Wikipedia they still have 5600 employees.
[00:18:11] Huh, wonder what they do.
[00:18:13] Just manage those emails, huh?
[00:18:15] Yeah, let me see.
[00:18:21] I'm just looking.
[00:18:22] It's just like the American hot-
[00:18:25] They purchased Netscape in 1998 for $4.2 billion.
[00:18:29] Holy shnikes.
[00:18:32] That was early days as Netscape was one of the big browser ones.
[00:18:38] Oh yeah, remember you used to get the CDs
[00:18:39] and all the magazines you bought for AOL?
[00:18:42] I still have some of those floppy disks and the CDs.
[00:18:47] So I have the CDs because I have old Game Pros and Wizards.
[00:18:51] I have them in Mylar bags.
[00:18:55] So yes, I still own some of those.
[00:18:58] It's so crazy how accessible the internet is now
[00:19:00] compared to back then you'd have to dial in
[00:19:04] and then sit through that screechy tone
[00:19:06] and then your images would just slowly complete
[00:19:11] as you went to a geocity site.
[00:19:15] Yep.
[00:19:15] We're so spoiled now.
[00:19:17] I know.
[00:19:17] I was saying that today when I was at work
[00:19:20] and one of our report management systems
[00:19:23] took, I don't know, maybe 30 seconds to load.
[00:19:27] Oh, come on.
[00:19:31] I know.
[00:19:32] I'm just screaming at my phone like, why can't you connect?
[00:19:34] And then like, yeah, 20 years ago it was like,
[00:19:38] come on, like video game photograph thing.
[00:19:42] Like you're almost there.
[00:19:44] Keep downloading.
[00:19:45] You got it hanging in there little buddy.
[00:19:46] Yeah.
[00:19:49] I totally agree.
[00:19:51] But yeah, you can see DD this movie reminded me of that time
[00:19:55] of the infancy of like really quality internet, you know?
[00:19:59] Yeah.
[00:20:00] So yeah, I think you should see it.
[00:20:02] I think you can stream it or digitally get it now
[00:20:06] because I'm getting targeted ads on my Facebook about it.
[00:20:12] Yeah, check it out.
[00:20:17] Brad, we watch film throughout the week.
[00:20:20] In a segment I call what we've been watching.
[00:20:25] So yeah, this is stuff we've been watching.
[00:20:29] Brad, would you watch this week?
[00:20:31] Yeah.
[00:20:32] Okay.
[00:20:32] So I think the crow, I saw the crow.
[00:20:36] Oh yeah.
[00:20:37] The new crow.
[00:20:37] I was curious about that because I follow you on Letterbox
[00:20:40] and I saw that you were not a fan of the crow.
[00:20:43] It was pretty boring to me.
[00:20:46] The movie is like half, like these two people that are like traumatic
[00:20:53] and like I guess in rehab maybe fall in love and then they like hang out
[00:21:02] and smoke and be in love like half a movie.
[00:21:06] I mean, there's like this secret organization that wants to kill them.
[00:21:11] Sorry, I got it.
[00:21:12] I think you're, sorry to interrupt you but I think you're on the right point
[00:21:15] because I read a review of it and it said it took so long to get going.
[00:21:20] Oh my God yeah.
[00:21:21] And that the leads don't have very good chemistry
[00:21:23] and the reviewers said it just felt like a way longer movie than it actually was.
[00:21:30] Yeah, and like when it gets to the action,
[00:21:32] like it's pretty gnarly and badass but like it takes so long to get there
[00:21:35] there aren't that many scenes of that.
[00:21:37] And then a lot of times I'm just like who's that guy?
[00:21:39] Like what's his like?
[00:21:41] What's the motivation for what they're doing?
[00:21:43] Like what's the secret organization?
[00:21:44] Like is that guy the devil?
[00:21:46] Like he's whispering into people and making them do stuff
[00:21:49] and yeah, and there's like this purgatory where the guy,
[00:21:56] Eric Draven goes and like talks to this other dude
[00:22:00] and goes in and out of that.
[00:22:01] And yeah, I was just like I don't understand the rules of this place
[00:22:04] and what's going on and why these people want to kill these Gen Zers.
[00:22:10] I don't know.
[00:22:11] Yeah, I just yeah, I get that the crow symbolizes this place
[00:22:18] between heaven and hell and you can get revenge and be invincible
[00:22:21] but other than that, I don't care.
[00:22:24] You're not giving shit to any of this.
[00:22:27] Well, so did nobody else in the world because it's panked really bad.
[00:22:33] Yeah, so I'm sitting there going like what's the new take on this?
[00:22:35] Because I fell asleep watching the original like a while ago
[00:22:40] and never revisited it.
[00:22:41] But yeah, I'm not really sure like what the appeal of this is.
[00:22:46] Yeah, and I know a lot of people are pissed about it.
[00:22:48] My friend Chaz is a really big fan of the crow
[00:22:50] and he was pissed that they were remaking it.
[00:22:53] So yeah, which did not start off on the best footing.
[00:22:57] I mean, they've already made like three other sequels
[00:23:00] that no one really cared about.
[00:23:01] Yeah, the same vein as the one they love.
[00:23:04] I was like, oh, you know, I'll give this one a shot.
[00:23:07] It's a little more reimagined.
[00:23:09] Like it doesn't look like Bruce Lee's or Brandon Lee's the crow.
[00:23:14] So I was like, yeah, I was just sitting there going like,
[00:23:16] when is something cool gonna happen?
[00:23:18] Yeah, that's not a good thing.
[00:23:20] Yeah, like there's so much buildup of these two people falling in love.
[00:23:25] And I get it's to like make you like when she gets killed
[00:23:27] to make you give a shit.
[00:23:29] But I'm like, two scenes would have been fine.
[00:23:32] Like I get it.
[00:23:34] Like I don't need like an hours worth of stuff.
[00:23:38] So when's he gonna become the crow?
[00:23:41] It takes like an hour and a half to get there.
[00:23:43] And then also like the Alamos super like freezer cold.
[00:23:46] So that didn't help.
[00:23:48] I was like, am I gonna die?
[00:23:51] Is this what hell is?
[00:23:53] It's this cold on purpose to like immerse me in this movie
[00:23:56] because this sucks.
[00:23:57] So yeah, the crow.
[00:24:00] And then I also watched blink twice, which fun fact I found out
[00:24:04] was originally titled pussy island.
[00:24:07] No.
[00:24:08] But obviously I guess that was tough to market.
[00:24:10] Yeah.
[00:24:12] Wonder why?
[00:24:13] Yeah, and that's it was all right.
[00:24:18] Again, another one that takes a long time to get to like what
[00:24:23] the movie is there's a lot of just partying on the island.
[00:24:26] And then occasionally like little odd things happen and people
[00:24:29] disappear.
[00:24:30] But yeah, again, it takes like an hour and a half to like get
[00:24:33] to like why this movie is important at all.
[00:24:36] Because I kind of had the vibe of like, hey, we're all having
[00:24:39] fun as a filmmaking team on this island shooting this film.
[00:24:43] And so we have a ton of footage of us just hanging out.
[00:24:46] And I kind of wish they just kind of got to the point
[00:24:48] of the thing a little faster.
[00:24:50] Yeah.
[00:24:51] And it really is like the lady version of like get out.
[00:24:54] I guess in some ways.
[00:24:57] So I was like, okay, that's all right.
[00:25:00] And then there's parts where when it finally gets to the climax,
[00:25:03] like the action is like pretty disjointed or like people are
[00:25:07] shooting or like where's that coming from?
[00:25:08] Like who's what's where and like the camera's not really
[00:25:11] following everything very well.
[00:25:13] Man, those are my least favorite kind of action movies.
[00:25:16] Yeah.
[00:25:17] So yeah, it's it's all right.
[00:25:21] Gotcha.
[00:25:21] Like it's a good important, like I guess message,
[00:25:24] I guess behind it, but I don't know if it's very executed
[00:25:27] in a very entertaining way.
[00:25:30] So yeah, what'd you watch?
[00:25:33] A couple things.
[00:25:36] I, you know, I'm doing the thing where I have these
[00:25:39] Blu-rays that I own that I haven't watched.
[00:25:42] And so the first one this week was RoboCop 3.
[00:25:49] Man, like I think I'm a little, I don't know.
[00:25:53] Like there's the part of it's cool because it's still RoboCop.
[00:25:55] But then without Peter Weller, like there is some gravitas
[00:25:59] that has lost in the performance and the movie just doesn't
[00:26:07] really work.
[00:26:09] And which is really cool though is I have this
[00:26:11] cream factory version.
[00:26:12] I don't know if you have this version of it, Brad.
[00:26:13] Oh yeah.
[00:26:14] But I love the interview with Fred Decker in it where he's like,
[00:26:17] yeah, it's my fault this movie sucks.
[00:26:18] Oh, I guess I haven't watched the Special Features yet.
[00:26:21] Definitely like a huge dip in quality, like just production
[00:26:25] wise too.
[00:26:26] Yeah.
[00:26:26] And he says he made a mistake making it PG-13 and the
[00:26:30] commentary on it brilliant because he's like, yeah,
[00:26:32] this movie sucks because I made bad choices.
[00:26:35] All right, man.
[00:26:36] Thank good for you, Fred Decker.
[00:26:38] He's like just owning it.
[00:26:40] Yeah.
[00:26:41] But I don't know, there's some charm to it because it's
[00:26:43] still RoboCop but you're right.
[00:26:45] The step down in quality because RoboCop is really cool.
[00:26:50] In fact, my birthday, Laura got me this mug and I don't
[00:26:55] know why but she got it for me.
[00:26:58] And because you're the future of law enforcement.
[00:27:00] Yes.
[00:27:02] No, it says, do you remember when RoboCop shot that dude
[00:27:05] in the dick?
[00:27:06] Oh yeah.
[00:27:06] So I put it on my desk at work and I thought it was
[00:27:10] funny.
[00:27:12] Have you seen our RoboCop remake?
[00:27:16] Huh.
[00:27:17] There's like, so I guess like, I don't know, 2012 or
[00:27:23] something, a bunch of industry people and like
[00:27:27] comedians and stuff, they each like, they cut up
[00:27:29] the original RoboCop into different, I guess like
[00:27:33] five minutes pieces and then everyone was
[00:27:35] assigned to do a remake of each of those pieces.
[00:27:39] And so there's like, and then they reassembled it
[00:27:42] into like this one thing called our RoboCop remake.
[00:27:44] And then so, you know, there'll be one scene that's
[00:27:47] like silly and then there's like an animation for
[00:27:51] the next five minutes and then there's like some
[00:27:52] other thing for the next five minutes.
[00:27:54] But one of the sections is like the part where
[00:27:57] the guy gets shot in the dick.
[00:27:58] They like, they take it to like, they dial
[00:28:01] it up to like a million percent.
[00:28:03] So he just starts shooting like a ton of people's dicks
[00:28:06] off and it's like totally uncensored and it's
[00:28:09] great.
[00:28:09] It's amazing.
[00:28:10] Just awesome.
[00:28:10] Look up our RoboCop remake and I forget what scene it
[00:28:13] is.
[00:28:13] I think it's like 27 or something.
[00:28:15] But yeah, it's just like over and over again,
[00:28:17] just like mangled penises getting like shot
[00:28:20] apart.
[00:28:22] I'm on board with that.
[00:28:23] Yeah.
[00:28:25] Yeah.
[00:28:26] So RoboCop 3 is, I'm glad that I have it
[00:28:29] to complete my RoboCop collection, I guess.
[00:28:31] Yeah.
[00:28:33] I watch Adam Sandler's new stand up called Love
[00:28:35] You and it's brilliant.
[00:28:38] It's on Netflix.
[00:28:39] Everybody should watch it.
[00:28:40] It has this low budget feel to it.
[00:28:44] There's a funny bit at the beginning where he's
[00:28:46] signing autographs for people outside the
[00:28:48] club and it's this dude with his kid and it's
[00:28:50] like pictures of him in his own house.
[00:28:52] He's like, where'd you get these?
[00:28:54] And the guy says, oh, it's from your new
[00:28:55] movie.
[00:28:56] It's pretty funny.
[00:28:58] So yeah, it's just a stand up comedy but
[00:29:00] it's great.
[00:29:02] Per Kino Lorber's sell a long time ago, I got
[00:29:08] Billy Kid versus Dracula and yeah, this movie is
[00:29:15] like really bad but it has this like charm to
[00:29:19] it where they, it follows no like vampiric
[00:29:22] rules.
[00:29:23] The Dracula in it is not like an attractive
[00:29:25] dude.
[00:29:26] He can be out in the sun.
[00:29:29] I don't know what the actual rules of Billy
[00:29:32] the Kid versus Dracula is but there's some
[00:29:35] kind of campy charm to Dracula being in a
[00:29:38] western with Billy the Kid where he's, you
[00:29:42] know, it's a western that has Dracula in
[00:29:44] it.
[00:29:44] It's basically what it is and it's so low
[00:29:47] budget and they also make Billy Kid out
[00:29:51] to be this American hero and I go, that's
[00:29:53] not what Billy the Kid was like.
[00:29:55] But hey, you know what?
[00:29:57] It's a marketable name.
[00:29:59] He versus Dracula in it and there's some
[00:30:02] low budget charm to it I guess is all I
[00:30:05] can say.
[00:30:08] And I mean there's also some unintentional
[00:30:10] racism with the Native Americans where
[00:30:14] they're constantly called savages
[00:30:15] throughout it so you know, you have
[00:30:17] that going for it which when you watch
[00:30:20] movies like that and they use language
[00:30:22] like that it takes you immediately out of
[00:30:24] the movie.
[00:30:25] You know, this is not well put, like this
[00:30:29] is not very sensitive and it's always
[00:30:32] like white people in just wearing, you
[00:30:35] know, leather and moccasins and it's
[00:30:37] just poor taste.
[00:30:40] But it's fun.
[00:30:42] It's campy.
[00:30:43] I'm glad I got it when it was 599.
[00:30:49] And the last thing I watched just
[00:30:51] randomly again on my Blu-ray stuff up
[00:30:54] here that leaves are starting to change
[00:30:56] and starting to get a little cooler so
[00:30:58] it's the fall.
[00:30:59] So it's the start of spooky season and
[00:31:02] I watched James Cameron's first film
[00:31:05] for Rana too, The Spawning.
[00:31:10] Which dude it opens with these people
[00:31:13] like scuba diving and then they just
[00:31:16] take off all their clothes and start
[00:31:18] fucking underwater and I'm like what
[00:31:20] the fuck is this?
[00:31:22] And then the piranhas eat them so it's
[00:31:23] pretty cool.
[00:31:25] It's really cheesy.
[00:31:27] Lance Henriksen's in it though, like a
[00:31:30] young Lance Henriksen.
[00:31:31] I think this is just before Aliens
[00:31:35] or a couple years before it's 78-79.
[00:31:41] But he's in it as his cop and his
[00:31:44] wife who has a new boyfriend because
[00:31:47] they're separated is this dive lady
[00:31:49] and one of her dudes gets eaten by the
[00:31:52] piranha but these piranhas mutate and
[00:31:55] they fly out of the water and they
[00:31:57] have wings and they eat people and it's
[00:32:00] all bloody and gory.
[00:32:02] It's really low budget.
[00:32:05] But there's some fun to it.
[00:32:07] The acting in it kind of sucks
[00:32:09] donkey dick.
[00:32:12] But you know, it looks good and you
[00:32:15] can see that James Cameron is going to
[00:32:17] become a really talented filmmaker
[00:32:19] because he does underwater scenes and
[00:32:22] the camera is always in the right
[00:32:25] spot and it moves and it moved by
[00:32:28] quickly.
[00:32:28] I think it's only like 80 minutes and
[00:32:30] it's another like shout factory,
[00:32:32] screen factory that they did a good
[00:32:34] job on remastering it and there's
[00:32:36] a couple bonus features on it.
[00:32:38] It's a silly film but you know,
[00:32:41] it's a piranha movie.
[00:32:42] What else do you want?
[00:32:45] Yeah, that's what I watched this week.
[00:32:47] Corinne sent in a showtime.
[00:32:51] Yeah, I know I was about to get to that.
[00:32:52] I didn't forget this time but let's go
[00:32:54] ahead and play that for our listeners.
[00:32:56] Hey nerds, Corinne here for another
[00:32:57] installment of Showtime where I
[00:32:59] typically talk about something cool
[00:33:00] I've been watching lately but this
[00:33:02] week I'm doing something a little
[00:33:03] different.
[00:33:04] We're going to be talking about the
[00:33:05] surprise announcement of Ted Lasso
[00:33:08] season four.
[00:33:12] I can't...
[00:33:13] I'm going to have to spread this out
[00:33:14] over two different episodes because
[00:33:15] I have a lot to talk about.
[00:33:17] First and foremost is that I am
[00:33:20] cautiously optimistic about season
[00:33:22] four because as you might remember
[00:33:25] I did not have a very good
[00:33:26] relationship with season three
[00:33:29] especially with the season three
[00:33:30] finale and just how everything
[00:33:32] ended.
[00:33:34] As I was watching season three I was
[00:33:36] like I could see the problems.
[00:33:37] The episodes were too long we were
[00:33:39] spending too much time with certain
[00:33:40] characters, not enough time with
[00:33:42] others.
[00:33:43] We were just focused on a lot of
[00:33:45] plot lines that went nowhere,
[00:33:46] characters that nobody liked and
[00:33:48] but I was like hey it's okay as long
[00:33:51] as they stick the landing and then
[00:33:53] they didn't and supposedly the
[00:33:55] show was over at that point you
[00:33:57] know they were like this is it
[00:33:58] we're not going to do a fourth
[00:33:59] season and the way that it
[00:34:02] ended was just so lackluster
[00:34:04] so yeah I when it came out
[00:34:09] a couple days ago on Twitter that
[00:34:11] they were like hey they might be
[00:34:14] doing a fourth season at Ted Lasso
[00:34:15] I was like it's just a rumor I'm not
[00:34:17] going to invest it in it and then
[00:34:18] it got picked up enough that I was
[00:34:20] like okay it's basically confirmed
[00:34:21] at this point so yeah
[00:34:27] yeah I was actually really excited
[00:34:28] when they said they were going to
[00:34:29] be doing a fourth season and
[00:34:32] talking about it with more
[00:34:33] Ted Lasso fans it's like I do
[00:34:37] remember how many problems season
[00:34:39] three had and it's like season four
[00:34:41] could be just as bad if not worse
[00:34:43] but I'm like yeah but season three
[00:34:45] was so bad it could also easily
[00:34:47] be better so it's like can you know
[00:34:50] season three was so bad the bar
[00:34:52] can't really get that much lower
[00:34:54] so it might still be equally bad
[00:34:57] who knows but as far as what
[00:35:01] I think is going to happen I could
[00:35:02] see I basically see it going one of
[00:35:04] three ways number one it's going
[00:35:07] to be what I call a soft reboot
[00:35:09] where basically Ted is not really in
[00:35:12] the picture some of the other characters
[00:35:14] are maybe not in the picture or
[00:35:17] maybe they might like cameo or
[00:35:18] something but you know we get a lot
[00:35:20] of new characters the setting might
[00:35:22] be the same but the formula might be
[00:35:24] a little different there might be
[00:35:25] different conflicts mild spoilers I
[00:35:28] guess for season three finale but
[00:35:30] they set up the possibility that
[00:35:31] Richmond might expand to a women's
[00:35:33] team so if that is the if that
[00:35:36] happens and we'll talk about more
[00:35:39] here in a second but yeah if that
[00:35:41] happens I could see them basically
[00:35:46] making Ted last season four basically
[00:35:49] be the soft spin-off where they
[00:35:51] incorporate the women's team into
[00:35:53] the men's team of the like the
[00:35:55] structure of the show so now we're
[00:35:57] focused on both teams Ted is maybe
[00:36:00] like a mentor figure who's kind of
[00:36:02] off doing his own thing and they
[00:36:03] don't really you know maybe they
[00:36:05] call him occasionally and maybe he
[00:36:07] shows up at the very end of the
[00:36:08] season or something but it's mostly
[00:36:10] going to be focused on a new set of
[00:36:11] characters even if it's set in the
[00:36:13] same location and has some overlap
[00:36:14] but again I could totally totally
[00:36:18] see because I think Apple realizes
[00:36:21] that Ted Lasso is one of the most
[00:36:23] recognizable shows that they have
[00:36:24] it's probably the most watched is the
[00:36:26] most I mean it has merged I've
[00:36:28] never seen any other Apple Apple
[00:36:30] show that has merged for it I it's
[00:36:33] been nominated for Emmy so it
[00:36:34] definitely has like a lot of brand
[00:36:36] recognition as you know as a show so I
[00:36:39] could definitely see like the writers
[00:36:40] came to Apple and said hey we want to
[00:36:42] do it Ted Lasso spin-off and they're
[00:36:43] like no way we want a full-blown
[00:36:47] Ted Lasso season four because we need
[00:36:49] this show we need the viewership it
[00:36:51] has a built-in audience and like yeah
[00:36:52] I'm sure that if they'd said we
[00:36:54] want to do a spin-off that a lot
[00:36:56] of viewers would have shown up for
[00:36:57] it but I think the fact that Ted
[00:37:00] Lasso season four got announced is
[00:37:01] like way more exciting to people than
[00:37:04] hey they're gonna do a Ted Lasso
[00:37:05] spin-off because people would be like
[00:37:07] eh whatever you know some people
[00:37:10] might be excited but some people might
[00:37:11] be like you know what Ted Lasso really
[00:37:13] sucked and I hated how it ended and so
[00:37:15] I don't care if it comes back or I
[00:37:16] don't care if it gets a spin-off
[00:37:17] but again if Ted Lasso season four
[00:37:21] I think captures everybody who both
[00:37:24] liked the way season three ended
[00:37:25] and didn't like the way season three
[00:37:27] ended because now everybody wants to
[00:37:29] see how it's gonna continue so anyway
[00:37:31] option number one soft spin-off where
[00:37:35] again they're bringing in a lot of new
[00:37:37] characters have a new formula but the
[00:37:40] name is still the same right so option
[00:37:43] number two and this is going to be
[00:37:45] getting into some spoilers for the
[00:37:46] Ted Lasso season three finale so if
[00:37:48] you don't want any spoilers this might
[00:37:51] be your time to hop off I'll try not
[00:37:52] to say anything really big but anyway
[00:37:56] so number two is that there is not going
[00:37:59] to be a major time jump between the end
[00:38:01] of season three and the beginning of
[00:38:02] season four I really don't think this is
[00:38:05] likely I think that they're gonna end
[00:38:07] up doing option three which I'll talk
[00:38:08] about in a second but I I don't
[00:38:12] basically this would require them to
[00:38:14] kind of retcon or somehow explain
[00:38:17] away the kind of epilogue sequences
[00:38:19] that they had at the very end of
[00:38:20] season three they might have built
[00:38:23] themselves in a little bit of wiggle
[00:38:24] room because it the way it was framed
[00:38:26] in this in the finale was almost kind of
[00:38:30] like it might have been a dream that
[00:38:31] Ted was having because all of the kind
[00:38:34] of epilogue sequences of like Rebecca
[00:38:35] meeting boat guy and Roy succeeding
[00:38:39] Ted as head coach of Richmond and you
[00:38:43] know all this other stuff Bearden Jane
[00:38:45] getting married you know it all
[00:38:47] happened within the frame of time
[00:38:49] that Ted was on the plane so they
[00:38:51] might explain it away as like oh it
[00:38:52] was a dream Ted had or something but
[00:38:55] again I don't as much as I would like
[00:38:57] that because I hated those epilogue
[00:38:59] sequences or at least I hated most of
[00:39:01] them not all of them but I don't think
[00:39:03] they're gonna do that I think we're
[00:39:04] gonna get option three which is that
[00:39:06] there is going to be a major time
[00:39:07] jump between the end of season three
[00:39:09] and the beginning of season four
[00:39:11] and it might kind of tie into the
[00:39:13] thing about the women's team that
[00:39:17] maybe what might happen is that the
[00:39:19] epilogue sequences really did happen
[00:39:21] but they didn't seem to cover a huge
[00:39:22] chunk of time you know maybe like six
[00:39:24] months or a year because I think like
[00:39:28] Phoebe doesn't look that much older in
[00:39:30] the barbecue sequences I think Jane
[00:39:33] might have been pregnant in the
[00:39:34] wedding I don't know but I mean it
[00:39:37] might not cover more than like six
[00:39:39] months to a year within that
[00:39:41] epilogue timeframe so if we get like
[00:39:43] a two or three year time jump we
[00:39:46] could see like you know maybe Rebecca
[00:39:48] did get with Boat Guy but they broke up
[00:39:50] or maybe Beard and Jane did get married
[00:39:53] but then they get divorced or whatever
[00:39:56] and maybe Roy did succeed Ted as
[00:39:58] head coach of Richmond but now he
[00:40:01] you know maybe he wants to move on to
[00:40:03] another team or whatever happens
[00:40:05] and it would give them enough time
[00:40:07] to build the infrastructure and the
[00:40:09] foundation for the women's team
[00:40:11] and then maybe that explains why
[00:40:13] Rebecca is all of a sudden calling
[00:40:15] Ted up again and saying like hey
[00:40:17] we have a women's team we want to start
[00:40:19] and we need a coach you seem like
[00:40:21] the logical choice and then maybe you
[00:40:23] know enough time has passed that Ted
[00:40:25] is in a different place in his life
[00:40:27] his son is older rebellious teenager
[00:40:29] whatever and so he's like okay I
[00:40:32] feel like I'm at a place where I can
[00:40:34] leave my family and you know go take
[00:40:36] a job overseas again so you know
[00:40:39] maybe Ted does go and you know he
[00:40:42] goes back to Richmond and he coaches
[00:40:43] the women's team this time so then we
[00:40:46] would still get Ted Lasso in Richmond
[00:40:50] coaching soccer football whatever you
[00:40:52] want to call it but we might have like
[00:40:56] again some of the old characters but
[00:40:59] then it would kind of be a soft reboot
[00:41:01] but at least like Ted would still be
[00:41:03] there whereas with the soft reboot
[00:41:05] option I outlined as number one
[00:41:07] I Ted would not really be involved
[00:41:10] he wouldn't really be like a main
[00:41:11] character but in option three he is so
[00:41:16] I honestly don't know I see option one
[00:41:19] and three being about equal I don't think
[00:41:22] option two is really gonna happen I
[00:41:23] think I think they're gonna have to do
[00:41:26] a time jump because otherwise it's like
[00:41:29] why have Ted go back to Kansas if
[00:41:31] he's just immediately gonna go back
[00:41:33] to Richmond you know I do think that
[00:41:34] there I do think that the women's
[00:41:36] team thing is gonna happen and I
[00:41:38] think that that's gonna be the excuse
[00:41:39] to bring Ted back over
[00:41:42] whether or to do like a soft
[00:41:45] reboot like I said so
[00:41:48] yeah again cautiously optimistic
[00:41:51] I could see this going very badly
[00:41:54] but I can also see this being way
[00:41:56] better than what we got and
[00:41:58] honestly I do think we're gonna get
[00:42:00] more than four seasons like if we
[00:42:02] get a fourth season I'm positive
[00:42:04] we're gonna get a fifth season because
[00:42:06] no way they revived the show
[00:42:09] no way they just say like okay
[00:42:11] we're gonna do three seasons and that's it
[00:42:13] and then like two years later they're
[00:42:14] like no we want to do a fourth season
[00:42:15] and then that's it I bet
[00:42:18] you know Apple especially because they
[00:42:20] don't really have a lot of other big
[00:42:21] flagship shows they're gonna try to
[00:42:24] keep Ted last of going as long as
[00:42:27] they can or as long as they feasibly
[00:42:29] reasonably can so that's where I'm
[00:42:32] at I've rambled about it long enough
[00:42:34] but this probably should have been
[00:42:36] a post on the real nerds website but
[00:42:39] I'm in the middle of a whole bunch of other
[00:42:41] personal writing projects right now and I'm like
[00:42:44] don't need one more thing to write about
[00:42:46] okay on top of all my other like
[00:42:48] professional like stuff I write for
[00:42:50] work so anyway you just get this on
[00:42:53] the real nerds podcast but yes join me
[00:42:56] next time when I will talk more about
[00:42:58] Ted lasso my wish list for season four
[00:43:02] probably other bitching about why Apple
[00:43:04] is bringing it back now versus why
[00:43:07] you know why did they wait two years to
[00:43:09] do this again I really think it boils down
[00:43:12] to it was like I was bitching about two weeks
[00:43:14] ago with the whole thing with the
[00:43:16] acolyte Apple does not have a lot of
[00:43:18] viewership they don't have a lot of
[00:43:20] flagship shows Ted lasso is the most
[00:43:23] mainstream one that they have and it
[00:43:25] ended so of course they want to bring
[00:43:27] it back because they want the
[00:43:29] viewership it has a built-in audience
[00:43:30] they want to get people resubscribing
[00:43:32] to Apple and they want them to you know
[00:43:36] which will subsequently get people
[00:43:37] interested in all their other shows so
[00:43:40] it's like free advertising for them
[00:43:42] basically you know all they have to do is
[00:43:44] like Ted lasso season four confirmed and
[00:43:47] then like boom you know a hundred thousand
[00:43:49] extra people sign up for Apple plus
[00:43:51] because they want to rewatch Ted lasso
[00:43:52] now that season four is basically been
[00:43:55] confirmed yep free advertising so now
[00:43:59] they don't have to they don't have to
[00:44:01] market whatever prestige show that nobody's
[00:44:04] watching alright guys I know we're going to
[00:44:07] do film explosion next week so check in
[00:44:09] with me in like two or three weeks time
[00:44:12] where I'll probably talk more about Ted
[00:44:14] lasso in my wish list for season four
[00:44:16] and other things and maybe hopefully
[00:44:18] something fun but probably not it'll
[00:44:20] probably be Ted lasso again because
[00:44:22] I only have two modes it's Star Wars
[00:44:24] or Ted lasso apparently but alright
[00:44:26] guys take care I'll talk to you guys
[00:44:28] next time with something bye
[00:44:30] alright screaming outside my door
[00:44:32] the fuck that is yeah Ted lasso
[00:44:36] season four is coming apparently so
[00:44:39] yeah I don't know how it's gonna work but
[00:44:41] we'll see we'll see yeah it's a fun show
[00:44:46] and I'm not surprised that they wanted to
[00:44:47] make more eventually but we'll see how it goes for them
[00:44:52] I really just want to hear Jamie Tartt
[00:44:55] dancing in I mean that's really all I want
[00:44:58] but I believe it'll be a good season
[00:45:01] yeah I kind of want to see Nate and Roy
[00:45:03] win the cup or whatever so
[00:45:07] yeah that would be cool
[00:45:10] maybe doesn't even have to have Ted lasso in it
[00:45:13] I mean I guess you definitely I mean
[00:45:15] you really don't right I feel like
[00:45:17] his story is wrapped up like he went back
[00:45:18] to Kansas and that's that I don't know
[00:45:21] why yeah I can back out there
[00:45:24] yeah unless they need him to get over the hump
[00:45:26] like you know inspire people again I don't
[00:45:29] know maybe yeah um so yeah
[00:45:34] next week we're doing our film explosion
[00:45:36] 1994 so stay tuned for that extravaganza
[00:45:40] Zach and Corinne will be on the episode
[00:45:42] next week so that'll be fun to listen
[00:45:44] to the week after that we're doing
[00:45:47] Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and the week
[00:45:49] after that you can say hi to us at
[00:45:52] the Colorado Festival of Four
[00:45:55] I know Brad you have some things
[00:45:58] got going on this week that weekend
[00:46:00] but we will be there and you should be able to
[00:46:02] say hi to us we don't have a booth or
[00:46:04] anything but we will be out and about
[00:46:07] um so yeah until next time
[00:46:11] we'll see you at the movie
[00:47:05] theme songs and that's how you fucking do it
