Ep. 361: Shot Fuzz

The Reel Nerds are no sesame, all street when they review The Happytime Murders.

[00:00:00] Reel Nerds is a proud partner of the Denver Podcast Network in the shadow of the mountains. We speak. How would you define the mile-high hustle? Well, I don't know what that is. Please tell me. Denver's changed a great deal over the past 30 years. Ten years. Five years.

[00:00:20] Heck, I've noticed some new things pop up since last month. But if you look a little closer, you can see growing businesses, new ideas and interesting people making these changes happen. So here it is, a podcast about the businesses, ideas and people shaping Denver today.

[00:00:38] And we're calling it Mile-High Hustle. Mile-High Hustle. Mile-High Hustle. The mile-high hustle's a grind. Working your ass off and networking like crazy in like the real way. They work like crazy so they can get the weekend off and go skiing.

[00:00:53] I think it's something different than what's going on in places like Silicon Valley. The breaks are better in Colorado. Every other week in the lead-up to Denver Startup Week, the largest free entrepreneurial event of its kind,

[00:01:04] we're releasing a new episode to help you navigate this dynamic new business landscape. How would you define the mile-high hustle? You know, I think the word hustle, I think about how hard it is to work to do anything that you've never done before

[00:01:19] or that no one's done before. Colorado continues to lead the nation in innovation and change. Mile-High Hustle. The Denver Startup Week podcast is being directed by Denver Startup Week, hosted by myself, Paul Corolli, and produced by House of Pod. Episode one is coming on June 25th.

[00:02:27] Come check out the awesome crossover episode. Welcome to Real Nerds Podcasts. Unofficially, the official podcast at Denver Comic Con 2019 and beyond. Today we have a sad room. It's only me and Zack. Zack, what's up? See, you say this is sad. I'm Zack, by the way.

[00:03:09] You say this is sad, but I think this is the matchup that the fans have been waiting for. I think it is. Like this is Freddie versus Jason level excitement. Ronnie, you should direct this podcast right now. Lots of hypercuts. More blood! More blood!

[00:03:27] Hey, Kellen, why don't you tell what movie did you watch this week? I watched Draknia. And Hotel Transylvania? What does he say? He put people in the door. Does he say blah, blah, blah, blah, blah? Yeah, because he does this blah, blah, blah, because he's sad.

[00:03:51] What movie did you watch with Busting? We're about to talk about Ghostbusters. You're going to talk about Ghostbusters? And then we'll talk about the girls of England and Evington. Kellen, do you cross the streams? And then they get ghosts and Ghostbusters with Busting's Dwayne. Yeah?

[00:04:13] And who do they fight? Who do the Ghostbusters fight? Ghostbusters. And then I was doing this... That means there was ghosts in the kitchen. Yep, that was the scariest part of it for me. And then there was ghosts in the living room, Maggie.

[00:04:32] And then there was some outside. What? Ghosts were outside? But we're just... And then we can play them later. And this time we have to fight them outside. Okay, who is the biggest ghost? The green one. The green one? What happens when the green one touches you?

[00:04:52] And then I have to scream him away. Yeah? I'll scream him away. What gets on you when he gets you? I'll scream him away. He's been watching Ghostbusters and he's been really excited about it.

[00:05:06] He likes Ghostbusters too because it has pink slime and the baby is always in trouble. Oh yeah, that makes sense I guess. Maybe in the bathtub. There is slime in the bathtub. Yeah, I haven't seen two in a long time.

[00:05:21] I watched the first one a lot more though. We will catch them. What's the big ghost? What is he made out of? He's been eating them. What's the big one made? The white one? What's he made out of? He was trying to close into us.

[00:05:34] Was he climbing the building? Yeah. And is he Marshmallows? Yeah. What happens to him? And then I will get him. Okay. And then I will steal him. Good job buddy. Most parents show their kids Aladdin, Lion King, I Showmine Ghostbusters. You know if Paul Feig is listening...

[00:05:55] I think I've got a good pitch for two with Melissa McCarthy and Christopher Whig. It's a big hit of Melissa McCarthy every week on Real Nerds Podcast. We go see a new movie and we podcast our experience to the world. This week we saw The Happy Time Murders.

[00:06:07] Stay tuned till the end of the show. We'll see if you should see it or not, play the trailer then spoil the movie. Before we start, we lost a member of our family. Zach, I'm sorry to hear about your doggy. Oh yes, Jason Muse Eastman.

[00:06:21] Yeah, he was named after Jay and Jay and Tom Bob because I was really into Kevin Smith at the time. And we named the first dog Shannon. So I was like, well, I get to pick the next name and it's Jay. Shannon after Mallrats?

[00:06:33] See, I put it as Jay after Jason Muse and Shannon after Shannon Elizabeth. Jay and Justice. No, but it was a wonderful dog. He passed away buddy. Yeah. Poor guy. Isn't that sad? Yeah. He was going through seizures though. Yeah.

[00:06:50] I talked to you guys about it before, but off air obviously. But it came down to just Wednesday was a very rough day for him and the decision was made with my dad out of town and my mom just like we're gonna put him down.

[00:07:04] You know, it is tough. I had a lab named Stewart and he got an abscess in his mouth and he started having seizures and the doctor ended up saying that he had cancer.

[00:07:15] And it's like, you knew you're going to keep him alive and having seizures and have a horrible life? Well, we were, and we had him on medication for the past four months. So we tried, but there's, we knew that this was, we were doing the end end.

[00:07:27] Oh yeah. I mean, we had like Stewart's three or four of his teeth taken out trying to help him. And it's always tough. So I'm sorry buddy because I always hate losing dogs. No, it's, it's, it's, you know what?

[00:07:39] I'm glad he's not in pain anymore because the past four months has been rough watching him with the medication. He's like stumbling around as if though he just like walked out of a 30s bar. So it was like, it was like Mel Blank and Dog Porpo was weird.

[00:07:51] But, but no, he was a wonderful dog. My favorite thing to do with him was actually to watch movies on my laptop on the deck with him. So he'd be sitting there. He'd listen to some of them sometimes.

[00:08:00] Whenever I'd put on an old time radio show or a podcast, even he'll, he'll kind of like listen if he hears something like, like that, that peaks his like interest. It's usually loud noises. And he loved tennis balls. He could fit three in his mouth at once.

[00:08:13] Oh, nice. And then, and then, but he would, we would try to play fetch with him, but he wouldn't have it because he was like, that is a commoners game. So he would just take the ball and keep it. And then he would collect them and hurt.

[00:08:23] You know, I will say that even though he was in pain, he's always had a smile on his face. He was a happy dog. Oh yeah, he loved everybody he met. Yeah, he was a very happy dog. So sorry for your loss. Yeah, well thank you very much.

[00:08:33] I appreciate that. He didn't want to do good. I'm trying to think of the last thing he might have seen if you were like in terms of like a dog watching TV. Probably the Goldbergs because my folks are watching the Goldbergs.

[00:08:44] You know, I keep on meaning to watch the Goldbergs because they have a huge monster squad reference in it is Nards. And I guess they say Nards all the time in it. I've seen bits and parts of what they're watching. And there's a whole Spaceballs episode. Nice.

[00:08:58] And there's a, I've seen one full episode and it's the Batman episode. And it's where the Adam character is trying to connect with his grandfather by admitting to, or like pretending to like Adam West Batman when he really likes Michael Keaton Batman.

[00:09:15] And it turns out it's like they're pitted against each other by the middle brother. So it's pretty adorable. What was the ghost game? The ghost game. The ghost game. The ghost game. You like sit down on the post and then you're like,

[00:09:31] I stick all the books on the TV and you're like, Okay. In the middle of the movie. Calendia, see the monsters. I think he's talking about, there's a, like a Dave and Buster style place we go to a lot.

[00:09:46] Where you can like get tickets and he just catches them in for matchbox cars. But there's a Ghostbuster game there too. Are you talking about that one where you sit down and catch them? Yeah. Oh really nice. Yeah. It's fun, huh buddy?

[00:10:00] I just find out he's the push up to get the ghosts. I had to push down there to the other now. He's really talkative. He knows the mic is on. Also, I think he thinks the ghost of Brad is here.

[00:10:16] So yeah, so we'll also talk about movies that are coming out, movies that we've watched and movie news. We're a movie podcast. We like movies. That's what we do. We liked, we liked a boogie. We liked a boogie? Yes.

[00:10:30] You know, like seriously, I'm just, I keep thinking about this idea. Like you and I were on our own this episode. We're the horror hounds of the gang. Yes. We just, all we do, I got the hockey mask right here. We just recreate.

[00:10:44] It's like part five hockey mask though. Yeah, but okay, bear with me here. We're going to recreate the epic Arsenio Hull Jason interview. All you have to do. Did you hear like... Was off on the case. He's at, he's out of town.

[00:11:00] He has to go, he has to go two things for rich people. Yeah. Um, yeah. Uh, I had a really funny Friday 13 thing, but I just got distracted. That's what happens when you have a kid. Yes.

[00:11:14] You trip behind the bench, then I'll shoot the, on your tree there, rest it down. Okay. There we go. Then I will shoot the glass to me. Go away. So, I can't wait for Mattis to get that in. They're just nonstop.

[00:11:31] So without Brad here, I guess it's time to go around town with Zach. We're going around town with Zach, not bread this week because bread is lame. Bread is on an airplane in the southern states trying to do things for his company.

[00:11:46] But Zach is here running on a moped riding around town checking out my keys of movies. When Sadie just got pulled over on a moped. How does that work? Cause he didn't have prep registration and now he's in jail crying like a woman.

[00:12:02] Oh shit, another man touched my knuckles. Hey, what's happening around town? Hey film buddies, follow me around Denver. Well, the drive-in is going to be changing up their lineup. Starting on August 31st, you can see Crazy Rich Asians as the first bill,

[00:12:30] the Meg as the second and the final will be the Equalizer 2. Which I have not seen either of those or all three of those. Really? So I need to watch the Meg definitely. I'm taking next week off.

[00:12:41] Oh that's right, you pulled a Ryan when the Meg came out. Yeah, but to be fair Black Plansman is really good. But then I want to see Equalizer 2 because I remember liking the first one and Crazy Rich Asians.

[00:12:53] I was going to go see it eventually but I'm not a romcom fan so I'm kind of like, or I've been a betrayed romcom fan I guess I should say.

[00:13:00] So this might bring me back to it because it looks like it feels like an old fashioned romantic comedy where there's like an elegance to it and like its production design and stuff like that. They're not afraid to go all out.

[00:13:13] Podcast listener and friend Corrine said it's a good movie to see. Nice. And then for the Midnight Madness at the Esquire you can see Monty Python and the Holy Grail so get your coconuts ready guys. Yeah, you're ready to go.

[00:13:29] I don't know if you know this but a swallow cannot carry a coconut. There's a fun little fact that I read. I don't know if it's true on the internet sometimes you never know but I guess when John Cleese is playing the wizard

[00:13:44] before they have to defeat the rabbit they do that bit where he's like, I'm known by nanny names. Well what are you known as right now? Tim. And that line apparently there was a long ass name he was supposed to say

[00:13:56] but instead he just said Tim and Gilliam and Terry Jones real with it. I mean people like that and actors like that sometimes you just got to and sometimes you find gold. Yeah, no absolutely especially with the Python gang. They're full of wonderful things.

[00:14:13] If you rewatch a fish called Wanda just watch Michael Palin do his thing as the... Oh yeah, a fish called Wanda is brilliant. You know I keep on... I'm just a little bit itched to watch it because Jamie Lee Curse has been so active lately.

[00:14:25] She's wonderful in it and I think it's Arrow put it out recently on Blu-ray. Yeah and it's one I think I should get because I think the other one's pretty bare bones. Oh yeah, you want to get the one from Arrow

[00:14:39] and I think it's only like in the 18 to 21 dollar range. And it's a good one and because you know she's so active lately because of Halloween it just makes me want to watch a fish called Wanda. It makes me want to see again. True lies too.

[00:14:51] I know why they don't put on Blu-ray. Because James Cameron hates us. I guess. Well, I mean it's only by 20th Century Fox and now Disney has it so maybe. You're never getting it Ryan. Oh I'm getting it. Thanks for joining my club.

[00:15:05] That's right as an official D23 gold member I demand true lies on Blu-ray. I want you to break into their stock holders meeting. Oh that'd be so sweet. I object. I'm gonna get your ass down. This is what's happening. Listen you and Horn gotta get your shit together.

[00:15:22] And you can have me on all the special features. Special feature at Ryan of Real Nerds podcast says this is a great movie. Over and over again. Yes. Because that's all the insight I have to it. The commentary is just you going like that's cool. That's cool.

[00:15:40] Oh this is where he shoots the missile with a guy on it. I think he's dead. I'm not gonna mention the commentary. But yeah that's what's going on around town. Awesome. Oh actually one more thing is that Brad got into the 48 hour finalist thing. He did. Best of.

[00:15:57] Yep so he always wonders if he's gonna get in each year and I'm just like dude you make quality work relax. Yeah I don't know I can't remember a time when he hasn't to tell you the truth. Maybe at the beginning. Maybe. I'm gonna solve this mystery.

[00:16:14] But yeah that's what's going on around town. So yeah so congratulations Brad. Well deserved as always. And he also won an award at Bliss Fest. The Patrick Sheridan Unity Award if I am saying that correctly.

[00:16:31] Yeah he talked about it but I don't know what it was like he didn't describe what the award represented. No. He was like giving himself props so I have no idea what the award was about.

[00:16:41] He just posted something really kind of flipping about it like oh I won an award. I appreciate it. I got a door stopped. I got a piece of paper to wipe my nose with. I got an award.

[00:16:53] He's always been pretty humble yeah because he's always passes the praise on to other people in his work. Right. He works hard and his stuff looks great. I'm not surprised every time he wins something. I'm not. Yeah no I've run into the same thing.

[00:17:09] I mean like I only have one of them sitting out and it's the only reason is because it has to hold up Lord of the Rings on my shelf. No it's because you have an inflated ego Zach and you have to have. Look at how.

[00:17:19] Look at my award. Look at how fake and golden it is. That's how you go on a tell to pick up women you take out your award. Like you want to know a movie about it 1930s radio. They all say no Ryan.

[00:17:34] Will I ever stop find out next week. I'll let you know what 30s radio is all about. Is my relentlessness as bad as Erkel later. But then when you spill their drinks you say did I do that so yes. Did I do that. Quite like Erkel.

[00:17:50] I still can't believe the end of that show was him going into space. I don't remember. I remember TGIF when I was younger me and my brothers would always watch it so we like we liked. Okay we like we liked Erkel family matters and step by step.

[00:18:08] There was other one home improvement. Did you watch all that stuff. Do you see the key and peel sketch where it's they're talking to. I can never remember the family matters father's name because he's supposed to be the lead in the show but then Erkel got so popular.

[00:18:23] But they're talking to that guy. He's the same guy from die hard who played the cop who shot recently passed away. Yeah I think he did recently.

[00:18:31] But there's a sketch on it where he's trying to negotiate with the network president played by Keegan-Michael Key about getting more screen time. He's like I can't Erkel controls at all.

[00:18:39] And then it cuts to Jordan Peele playing Erkel and like basically him being like a Damien presence who like forces people to bend to his will. Love it. Really fun. Key and peel guys they do really great work. They do watch get out in Keanu.

[00:18:55] But yeah anyway that's what's going on around town. What's happening in movie news. It's real news. Well someone you don't like anyway is not working on something that we all kind of still enjoy.

[00:19:15] Oh yeah I'm so sad that I'm not going to get my drugs injected into Bond and he's going to have a trip out scene. I just realized that hippie James Bond would be like dumb but amazing. But yeah Danny Boyle quit Bond 25. I'm not that surprised.

[00:19:30] Yeah it seems like Danny Boyle wouldn't want to do that. It doesn't fit in that world at all. Yeah I mean like we kid but like there is stuff that I don't like about Danny Boyle's work either but I like that he's done his own stuff you know.

[00:19:42] For a majority I like his work. Yeah I mean like I think the only sequel territory he's really run into is the train spotting thing and that was just more of a unit thing. Nice. The mice. Alright so he calls Ash from Army of Darkness the Skeleton Fighter.

[00:19:58] Nice. I have like an army of darkness defense game on my phone. Really? It's on iPhone right? Yeah well yeah. Oh I want that. It's free you should get it. Nice. Yeah hello Mr. Fancy Pants. You're leading two things right now. Jack and shit. Jack left town. Shit.

[00:20:21] Yeah say you're leading two things right now. You're leading two things right now. Jack and shit. Jack and shit. Jack left town. You know what I think he almost got the tongue in the line now. Okay. He's saying give me some sugar baby. Give me some sugar baby.

[00:20:37] Good job buddy. That was Bruce Campbell he's showing us now. Oh yeah turn on your lights tomorrow. I will turn on my lights tomorrow. Yeah Kellen is adding commentary to this podcast. You know they did.

[00:20:51] He's like he's like he's like he's like he's like he's like an overly concerned mother you should turn off your lights you save on your bill. I like the idea of Edgar Wright doing one. Yeah that was among the list of people that were like they're targeting.

[00:21:05] They should. The only reason I wouldn't want Edgar Wright to do it is because again I don't want to be a person that's not a person that's not a person that but another musical star either whether they really really want to be a person

[00:21:18] that can get it right. I usually say just because the only reason I wouldn't want Edgar right to do it is because again same with Danny Boyle I like it when he does his own thing.

[00:21:27] Not to say that I still don't want that ant man that was going to do but whatever I like the old man we got now. That's just fine. And this is also on James Bond news it's not necessarily filmmaker related. You play the GoldenEye video game right.

[00:21:41] They came out and sent it from Mel magazine. Well, they did an oral history on the creation of the game. And into the dig, they found the environmental artist said, like, yeah, no, it's a cheat. Yeah.

[00:21:52] No, but I just thought that was fun, because I remember Gold and I. I only remember a few times where someone pulled Oddball, and I didn't understand why. Because by the time I would have cared about it, I had moved on from N64.

[00:22:06] So, but yeah, so vindication for all you fans out there who were epically frustrated. In the streaming world, we got a couple of good news. Also, we're something small. Netflix might stop mailing movies by 2022, but they still have 3 million people on that DVD plan. Yeah.

[00:22:27] This doesn't sound like a regular or anything. This was going to happen. I will say something interesting. I because obviously we're movie snobs and I try not to get things on DVD unless I have to. Right. And I'll talk about it later today.

[00:22:41] But I have friends are posting, you know, they got Infinity War on Facebook or Instagram or whatever. And some people had the DVD. So people still do get them. Right. Well, it is the cheapest option overall, especially on Disney's front.

[00:22:55] And I'm curious because I haven't watched a recent movie on DVD. I wonder if the quality has gone up. You know what you might have to end up doing that with because I was looking into it? One of my favorite movies from this year,

[00:23:07] The Death of Stalin didn't get a Blu-ray release in this country. You can only get it on DVD from I think it's IFC is the one who put it out here in this country. But you can get it on digital HD,

[00:23:21] like in the highest quality possible on digital, but you can't get it on Blu-ray. So like I'd say if you mean you like Veep and that stuff. So the guy who did that did Death of Stalin. So if you end up watching the movie,

[00:23:35] you know, get it on DVD to own and just see how you enjoyed watching. Yeah. I mean, I don't know why it's going to look at a 4K TV. You know, some of the stuff looks pretty. I'll talk about later. Some of stuff looks pretty good. Nice.

[00:23:46] As long as it's formatted right. I watched Dead Man on campus a few weeks ago and it wasn't formatted right. So basically it was the widescreen but also shrunk. So it was like a huge is like I was looking through a

[00:23:58] peephole the whole time because it's black all the way around the screen and then the picture because it wasn't formatted to stretch across the screen. Right. And I think that Dead Man on campus is a DVD from like 96. So that what has to be 98 because he came out 98.

[00:24:14] Yeah. What's in there? What's in there? That's all my stuff. I'm Zach, but that's all the stuff that my parents don't want to have upstairs. It's called storage. Yeah, it's called storage. You'll learn about it when you get too many things. All stuff in there for Halloween.

[00:24:32] Oh yeah, that's right. We are getting ready for Halloween too. Yeah, that's why Kellen sees it. My mom's going to get ready. She's going to she and she's going to flip out one one day during the middle of the week. She's like, we have to get up now.

[00:24:42] I love it. It's going in there. Whoa. What else is happening in his world? There's a little update on the Big Treble Little China remake. It's not going to be a remake. They're saying it's a continuation, which sounds fun. Yeah, the producer confirmed this today. It's the Rock.

[00:25:04] So yeah, it's Wayne The Rock Johnson. He's obviously going to try to make it as well as he can. And I don't know. It's one of those movies that is really fun. And can you still make it a movie like that?

[00:25:16] And then now because the 80s seemed like the right time to make that movie because of how silly it is. I don't know. I don't have any like I mean like they they announced this years ago

[00:25:27] that like the property was being developed and like and I think it was only like three years ago to be honest. But I remember thinking right away like I don't care if they remake it. Like that's fine. Like remakes have been happening for years like all throughout.

[00:25:41] Hi, Callan. I think nothing, but I don't trust my elderly eyes. There's a skeleton in there walking. Yeah. Oh shoot. Yeah, I hope he doesn't get any boots. Yes. Those boots aren't made for walking. That was a terrible joke. I'm going to hell. Violet. Violet.

[00:26:03] But no, in terms of that remake or continuation, whatever they are going to be, there's nothing wrong with exploring that world. No, I think so too. I feel like if they're going to do a continuation,

[00:26:12] I don't know what that would entail in terms of how it would be receptive because or received, to be honest, because. Outside of I don't know a lot of people outside of being film fans who like love, love, love big trouble, little China. Or little China.

[00:26:29] So like I, I love it because it's a carpenter film that's certainly not amongst the like normal trend. And it's Kurt Russell's one of his most iconic roles. Yeah. But I like I like the energy it has. Yeah. And I think that could translate to the more mainstream

[00:26:44] or the people who've never heard of Big Trouble. You know what would be interesting though? They said since it's a continuation and that also he isn't going to be playing Jack Burton. The wonder is, is like, well, might we see Kurt again in some capacity?

[00:26:58] I'd love to see Kurt Russell back. That would be amazing. Kurt Russell on the rock teaming up, I would buy 800 tickets for that. Technically they kind of not really have in the Fast and Furious movies. Yeah. But we've only got a sampler of that. We might end up.

[00:27:11] But I'm talking about like in a little China world. Oh, that'd be awesome. Them, them both failing to fight them properly. He's like the young hot shot guy and Kurt Russell is the old grizzled vet. It'd be amazing if a holder of Jack Burton

[00:27:26] is like turning to whoever joined John. So they're like, this kid is dumb and then he does something even dumber. Love it. I'm going to have to go stello by him. It's not going to be awesome. But yeah, so hats off.

[00:27:37] It looks like John Carpenter products are getting a well deserved revival. This just came in today. Whenever when Alec Baldwin really wanted to play Batman you know. Alec Bowie. Well, now he looks like he's going to play Batman's father

[00:27:52] in or at least that's the rumor for the Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie that Todd Phillips is working on. That would be cool. Yeah, it's the only time he really got to play a Caped Crusader was in a movie that I love and you hate.

[00:28:06] For anybody who doesn't know, that's the shadow from 1994. The wonderful shadow. It's fine if you like that show or if you like that radio show. No, it's not really back to the streaming world for a second. Disney their streaming service got an official name

[00:28:23] and it will cost less than Netflix. The service is called Disney Play. Well, here's the thing is I think. Oh no, maybe it's Disney Now. I don't know. I have a Disney. I think what's a Disney app I have right now? Let me look. Oh, that's Disney Now.

[00:28:38] I'm like, I think that's already its name, but Disney Play makes sense. Disney Play. Yeah, sounds fine. It sounded like they were going to make it sound like super epic. Yeah, something that you would never believe. But no, Disney Play, that sounds fine.

[00:28:49] And the subscription costs will be, their Iger thinks that they're going anywhere between eight to $14 a month. So. I mean, I'm going to get it. Here, I'm going to get it as long as they have shows that and content that you're not able to get.

[00:29:04] Because I mean, some people will get it for Marvel and Star Wars and things like that. I want it for like Pollyanna or the Apple dumpling gang. Stuff I can get on DVD, but I don't necessarily want to own. I can just stream it.

[00:29:17] Right, like Lovebug, Swiss Family Rock. Exactly. Swiss Family Robinson. And I'm looking for maybe classic shorts. You know, that's all I really want. I think that's the because actually we were talking about it's not coming out this week on Blu-ray,

[00:29:29] but you sent the info on that Mickey Blu-ray for the 75th anniversary. 90th. Or 90th, yeah, sorry. I think that that's the ideal place for the shorts to go because that's where they'll be most watched. I think so too. And I want them as a collector,

[00:29:45] but I'm willing to make this concession. I know I've been doing some research on it. Like the cover art's awesome. It starts with like the Up I Works Mickey and it evolves all the way up to like... John Lasseter Mickey. Yeah, like Modern Mickey, I guess.

[00:30:03] That's wrong. John Lasseter never did that. Oh no. Oh no. And it's only 13. Welcome back to the land of the living. Pick up a shovel and get to work. One of my favorite lines in the movie. What makes me mad is so I pre-ordered it on Amazon.

[00:30:18] And then I forgot Amazon and Disney are fighting for like years now. Yeah. And so I pre-ordered it on Amazon and it started out, I think it's listed at 24. Then when I first pre-order it said 16.99. I'm like, whatever. I'll pay 16 bucks for Mickey Mouse cartoons and HD.

[00:30:38] And then three days later, I got an email saying, this is no longer available. We'll email you when it is. Meaning they're not gonna let you pre-order it. I think you have to pay retail price. And by retail price, I mean they're suggested retail price

[00:30:51] of $24 to get it. So I'll just wait till it comes out or I'll get it on the Disney club. I'm not gonna do this stupid thing with Amazon. Yeah, no, I agree. I had the issue with them. I don't think I told you last week, two weeks ago,

[00:31:04] but I had an issue with them within the mouth of Madness. Oh yeah, no, yeah, we talked about it. Yeah, because Shout was- Because I freaked out on them too. And I said, I told him like, why am I ordering from you? Yeah. Oh my God, that's it.

[00:31:15] I will say that like, I kind of bend to their will a little easier because there is stuff that like, it's never a pre-order situation with me most of the time. Like one of the things we'll talk about in the Blu-ray releases

[00:31:27] the pre-order has gone fine and it's coming tomorrow. Yeah, no, and that's, here's the thing is I only pre-order stuff cause usually through the course of its pre-order life. So in the mouth of Madness is a good example and when you pre-order it's $24.95. So the price fluctuates

[00:31:41] based on how many things people buy. I understand the business model. At one point it dropped to $1506. So my price is locked at that. Right. But like whereas mine because it told me it was out of stock. Exactly. And then suddenly became available again.

[00:31:58] I had to, it thankfully went back down to $19.99. Yeah. But at one point it was like $28. And here's the, I don't care about paying $19. I like Scream Factory obviously. I'll talk about it later. I'm writing a whole articles about them. I love Scream Factory.

[00:32:10] Yeah, this is nothing against Scream. It's nothing and it's not the price. It's just Amazon, you go to it because they're supposed to, they're the number one retailer in the world. They get the most product. And so they should offer prices

[00:32:22] because I know that the more you buy as Amazon as a company, the less people charge you because you're buying so much of it. Right. So that they didn't drop the price is, it's irritating and I'm at the point now

[00:32:35] because like Trick or Treat comes out in a month and all this stuff and it's still at $34.95. And on Scream right now it's $22. And then I can get it two weeks early and I don't care about the posters but they also send you a poster.

[00:32:48] So I might just start pre-ordering them. Yeah, actually there's a, okay he's like really excited about it. Oh yeah, he's a ball of energy today. We got two more pieces of news. This is- Sorry, we mean Zack on Tangents. This is actually Comic Con related.

[00:33:10] This came through today. I'm pulling this up from San Diego local news. A federal judge has awarded San Diego Comic Con 3.9 million in legal fees in a copyright infringement lawsuit filed in 2014 against Salt Lake City's Comic Con convention. So now basically what this lawsuit is implying

[00:33:32] and its victory implies is that you can't call your Con Comic Con anymore. Yeah, so here's the, you can call it. So for example, Denver Comic Con. You cannot say it's Comic Con. The Comic Con is a San Diego thing.

[00:33:47] And it's just another thing where people are like, oh you're so freaking Hollywood now. Yeah, well I mean like, yeah I don't know how to really justify San Diego's action in this one because it seems like they know they're already the hot shit.

[00:34:01] It's not like anybody's gonna mistake Denver Comic Con for San Diego. You know it goes back- That'd be amazing if someone did though. It goes back to, ah it was like 20 years ago maybe even longer. So the WWE used to be the WWF

[00:34:12] and then they lost a lawsuit to the World Wildlife Federation. And at that point it's like they only chose the World Wildlife Federation because it's more respectable than the World Wrestling Federation. So now it's World Wrestling Entertainment which is fine but it's just a stupid lawsuit.

[00:34:31] You know what I mean? On the plus side, Vince McMahon could get endangered animals to fight. That's terrible. We don't want that to happen guys. We don't want that to happen. And then the last piece of news unfortunately is sad but life well lived.

[00:34:51] Screenwriter and playwright Neil Simon passed away at the age of 91. Love Neil Simon. I do too. What's your favorite Neil Simon? Sunshine Boys, always Sunshine Boys. I love the apartment. I will. I hate you. Let's check Lemon first of all. No but I mean quickly for anybody

[00:35:09] who doesn't know what Neil Simon is and Ryan. He wrote the odd couple barefoot in the park, promises, promises, goodbye girl and lost in Yonkers. And if you ever want to know how to break Zach just say stupid stuff like that because when you talk about radio

[00:35:23] and Neil Simon and anything. Call the nage of Hollywood. Call it just anything old. Anything old. You want to talk about the Civil War? Let's talk about the Civil War. No, the odd couple obviously is. A masterpiece in comedy. It's just so fun and he's so witty.

[00:35:38] His dialogue is really witty. He, you were a theater kid. So like and I was too to a certain extent but every acting class that I took Neil Simon popped up somewhere and eventually we ended up doing scenes from the odd couple as part of our finals.

[00:35:52] And I think I remember doing the spaghetti linguine scene as ours which is it's an amazing piece of comedy in terms of how you get the actor to work. Yeah my claim to fame in high school drama I was Oscar in the odd couple.

[00:36:06] We put on the odd couple. That is beautiful casting. And I used to, so you can ask Brad I like to do PS's and I for the most part so when I was in actual theater I would follow the script pretty close

[00:36:20] but there's a part right after the spaghetti part where you take the plate of spaghetti and you throw it against a wall and Oscar who I played had a monologue and it's really funny. And it's yeah. And it did make it dirty.

[00:36:40] But Felix leaves and then Oscar has a monologue that's brilliant and he's talking about how he just despises him and blah, blah, blah, blah. And I would always change it. So it used to drive the tech crew crazy because all the friends came back at that point.

[00:36:59] Felix didn't come back. It was all his buddies. Yeah, because it's the final poker game. Exactly so I would always have these little things that had to deal with people around. And so I would always change it and I always told Cliff was the head of our tech

[00:37:13] and I said, when I stop, do the knock. Like just when I stop. And so there's I think his closing night I went on for like four or five minutes. Wow. Just about and I'll never forget I didn't know if my drama teacher

[00:37:26] like a Mr. Clue he's a great guy but he used to he was so funny on stage right he used to put up this like wooden barrier so he could be left alone and watch the show and no one would sit around him.

[00:37:38] So he'd sit down and I was about halfway through this semi rehearse semi just winging at monologue with Neil Simon's words and mine and he was just laughing so hard. And when I was done and it because this is the last show I was like,

[00:37:53] fuck it, I don't care. Right. And if you were in theater, it's not the last show you kind of do stupid shit. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I was going, going, going, going, going and I remembered talking about and I'm pacing back and forth, stage left to stage right.

[00:38:05] And I'm looking up and I can see the tech guys in this spotlight going, oh my God, what are you doing? And it was done. And I got done with the show and I came out and he said, brilliant.

[00:38:19] And I knew I got it, but no, I love the odd couple. The odd couples are brilliant. The odd couple is an amazing piece. And actually I like the odd couple too. It's a film he wrote as the sequel direct sequel

[00:38:30] to the film version of the original odd couple. It's, it's not the same thing, but I like the progression of the characters. But yeah, the sunshine boys is my personal favorite not just because of its connection to the people they got for the film version.

[00:38:46] But if you read that play, he says a lot of very mature things about what it is to be motivated to be in show business. Like it's almost like a love, it's like a, it's a love like a show business, not necessarily playwriting Hollywood, whatever.

[00:39:02] It's about show business in general. The, one of the most brilliant things about the film version that Herbert Ross did with Matt Allen Burns is that he starts it with the Donald O'Connor song from Singing in the Rain make it laugh, make him laugh,

[00:39:14] but it's an instrumental version. And there's a moment at the end of the play where the two elderly vaudevillians are discussing what broke down on this show that they were supposed to do. And then it kind of stops. They reconcile briefly for like the course of like,

[00:39:36] I want to say half a page. And then they just start, like they don't reach a conclusion of we've made peace. But then right after that, they talk about well, what was in Variety this week? And they talk about another performer that had died.

[00:39:54] And then they keep trying to argue over who was the person that died. Was it the same person that they were thinking of? Or was it another person that they were thinking of? These old people that they knew from their days in vaudeville.

[00:40:07] And it's one of the most beautiful endings to anything I've ever seen because of just how it manages to sum up, like you're never gonna get that wound heal that you want, but you're gonna get like a different, like it's a scar, but it's still healed.

[00:40:23] You know what I'm saying? I think he's very good. Most of his stuff doesn't end on a good note. Oh yeah, no. But he's funny to get there and then he brings real life into it no matter really what he wrote.

[00:40:34] And I think that's why he's so successful. No, he's a playwright but in a movie because it's unconventional. His dialogue is so great. But it works really well. I'm scared buddy? You're okay. Don't be afraid of noises, you're a big boy. But yeah, no.

[00:40:59] A wonderful talented writer who, I mean he had the Neil Simon Theater named after him in the 80s after all of his success. There was a time where he had four shows going on at once on Broadway. Oh, and he was a true powerhouse. Like there's other-

[00:41:15] In the 60s, I don't know if there's a comedic writer who's better. Definitely in terms of Broadway. Yeah, that's what I mean. With film it's a weird argument. You can go to Reiner or Brooks or something like that. I mean on Broadway, no one's named brighter.

[00:41:31] Yeah, no, absolutely not. Because when you start having a title that says Neil Simons. You know you're in for something. You made it. The one show that I never got, two shows that I never got to see on Broadway that I wish I could have were

[00:41:47] one of the original runs of the producers on Broadway. And the other one is when Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick did The Odd Couple, that would have been amazing. I know people didn't like it in the critical community but I would have wanted to watch that

[00:41:59] just for the type. Theater critics are strange. They vary. I have a hard time reading the reviews because I'm just like, well what do you know? But again, don't come after me theater critics please. But yeah, no heat that other great stuff and whatnot.

[00:42:14] Gingerbread Ladies is a great one. Last of the Red Hot Lovers with Alan Arkin. Love it Alan Arkin. Yeah, so yeah, Neil Simon, Life Well Left. Also wrote for your show shows with Mel Brooks Carl Reiner, all those guys.

[00:42:28] And Mel Brooks did a tribute for him on Facebook that was lovely. He said he was definitely the nicest person to ever work with so. Shout out to Neil Simon. Heck yes. I'll definitely be re-watching Sunshine Boys. I have it on my iTunes account.

[00:42:42] I don't have the Blu-ray of it yet because it's an archive thing. But you know what I was trying to find Odd Couple on Blu-ray? That thing's out of print. It's 80 bucks. Yeah and it's gotta be used because there's no copies of it on stock.

[00:42:55] So yeah, anyway that is news. Hey, we also watch movies on Blu-ray and to help you, we're gonna tell you what's coming out on Blu-ray next week. DVD releases on Blu-ray. I mean the big one is something I'm excited about. I mean I have most of the movies,

[00:43:16] but I do have one coming that I'm really excited about. We're gonna talk about it last because we'll get through the direct first because then we'll just geek out. Well, among the new releases, Upgrade, Tag, and I think it's just Upgrade and Tag, isn't it?

[00:43:34] Yeah, it's just Upgrade and Tag. Oh no and RBG are coming to Blu-ray this week. I don't see anything for a 4K upgrade. Did you like Upgrade? I did but I will fully admit it's saw with AI. The thing I was thinking about getting it,

[00:43:51] it's one, I don't care it's not on 4K, that's fine. There's no special features on the Blu-ray. Really? It's just the movie. I was rather review on blu-ray.com so that's one I'll wait till is like five or six bucks. That's thanks. They're reissuing the Child's Play movies

[00:44:06] that are under Universal's banner so you can get Child's Play 2, 3, Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky. Although if you got that really cool seven film collector set, you're already good to go. I got the five when it came out. Oh nice.

[00:44:21] You see you didn't get the new one with the doll pop out, did you? Cause that's the one I heard has all the documentaries on it and stuff. But yeah, on the re-release front, Tucker, the man in his dreams is getting re-released for Blu-ray and digital.

[00:44:37] Tucker, the man in his dreams, the Jeff Bridges movie. And then from Shout Factory Scream Factory we've got Brain Scan with Edward Furlong which I heard about, I've never seen this. It sounds ridiculous so I might end up wasting my money on it at some point.

[00:44:56] It is pretty ridiculous. I don't remember it. It's one of those movies. I'm older than you so I rented it at Blockbuster on video. Really? And I don't remember it. Wow. I mean if nothing to see another Edward Furlong performance I guess. All of Films is releasing

[00:45:11] the Wachowski Brother Sisters first film Bound which is with Jennifer Tilly. I haven't seen it in a while but I remember loving it. And Jennifer Tilly Great in it and Gina Gershawne as well. From Vinegar Syndrome, this is one that I wanted to read the Platsynopsis for

[00:45:27] because I lost my shit over it for some reason. Not Wonder Woman, Wonder Women on Blu-ray, Vinegar Syndrome, Blu-ray and DVD, movie from 1973. This is the one line description of this film, Ryan. An evil woman makes a good living by kidnapping famous athletes, shopping them up

[00:45:47] and selling their remaining viable parts to the elderly rich until an insurance detective catches on and saves the day. You know those insurance detectives are pretty good. This sounds insane. I don't know who you are. This is like one of those like,

[00:46:01] we've talked about the ones that like James picks out one not like, this is where I'm just like no, no, no. We have to talk about the horror element here which is this woman shopping up famous athletes. The Vinegar Syndrome is very... Eclectic to say the least.

[00:46:16] Yeah, I mean I have Jack Frost from them but a lot of their stuff, so when you order from them you get like a catalog and a lot of it's like soft core porn, really obscure horror films. But then every once in a while they release

[00:46:32] something like Jack Frost or, man I think I have a couple Vinegar Syndrome but I'll have to think about what I have from them. But they do get named titles. Like pop culture flashy ones. They're goofy, they're really just goofy.

[00:46:44] And I mean there's niche artists market for it and I think it's awesome that they're released. Yeah. And I'm sorry, I lied. There are two other new releases from this year. Mary Shelley, the L Fanning Biopic of Mary Shelley and Book Club.

[00:47:00] So if you wanted to watch Candice Bergen back on the big screen you can watch Book Club. I always like Murphy Brown. I'm actually excited to see it come back. Yeah, she's funny. It's a show that I don't think about regularly. Yeah.

[00:47:13] I like it when she fights with a puppet because I'm like ha, because your father was a ventriloquist. Deep cut. Yep, exactly. And then really the last thing is Universal's re-releasing the Psycho Sequels in new packaging, which is whatever because like I think.

[00:47:29] I have a screen factory stuff. And I think they're still available technically so. Yeah, I think what happens is the licensing runs out and I don't know if they might, I don't know if they're gonna port over the screen factory stuff. But if you're thinking about,

[00:47:43] you don't know if you want a psycho movie, I always tell people you should see Psycho 4 because I think it's actually really good. Oh it is really good. It's Mick Garris' like, in my opinion it's Mick Garris' master base. It's a very different movie

[00:47:57] and it's cool cause you kinda see him how he becomes the way he is. I've always loved it. And it's written by Joseph Stefano who was the original writer for Psycho who adapted the novel from Robert Block. I would wanna get him just for the

[00:48:11] additional interviews and stuff cause I don't believe it's the same interviews that, maybe it is, it might be similar ones that Rob Galuzzo got for the Psycho Legacy documentary which is like, it's got a lot of material that I like to dig into.

[00:48:29] That DVD, that 2Disc set is packed with stuff. It's wonderful. But the last, last thing, we saved this best for last, the Universal Classic Monster's 30 film blu-ray set is coming to my doorstep tomorrow. Oh you ordered their whole 30 discs? I did it. I did it.

[00:48:47] I was just like, you know what? Life is too short. I'm gonna die of cancer at some point. All right. So I torn on this because, so I have the steel books from Best Buy from last year. Right. And they're amazing. And they're doing another new steel book

[00:49:04] of the eight essentials this year. Are they? Yeah, with new Alex Ross art. That's awesome. So the problem too is so, you did the right thing. So the Dracula and Frankenstein and Wolfman sets, there's a lot of overlapping because they're the most popular monsters. Right.

[00:49:22] So I mean, House of Dracula, House of Frankenstein shows up on all of them. Right. I like to drink it. Good. Like Bob. So the only thing I have coming tomorrow is the essential invisible man because I'll probably get creature as well. Right.

[00:49:37] But the invisible man, I only have the first one. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And that one comes, I think with six movies. So five have ever been on Blu-ray. Yeah, cause you get the invisible man returns, the invisible agent, the invisible woman and the invisible man. Something, and it's,

[00:49:54] I would like to still meet the invisible man. Yeah, yeah, that's the, that's the simple one. And I've never seen that one. That's a good one. It's not as good as Frankenstein. Well, nothing is, but so yeah, I'm excited. So I'll be getting some invisible man.

[00:50:07] The only one they don't have on this, and I can't remember if it was with the universal, it must have been, but Abedin Castillo, Abedin Castillo meet the killer boys, Karla. Yeah. Which, I'm not sure. To be fair, it's very hard to justify restoring all Abedin Castillo movies

[00:50:22] cause not all of them are still relevant. It's weird that they're not in that though. It seems like they should just put it in there. Well, and I think it might be an issue of how much do we really wanna charge for all these?

[00:50:35] Like what's the market still today? I'd be curious if they release numbers to see how well this sells. It's interesting because I think they're actually having an individual release of the invisible man, Abedin Castillo. They do right here. So, it deserves to have it. So, we'll see,

[00:50:51] I've only seen the invisible man, the original. The one with Vincent Price is fun. You'll like that one. I haven't seen the other ones so, I heard they kinda go to more comedic route with them. Oh yeah, Invisible Woman is a nut-so movie.

[00:51:03] It's funnier than Memoirs of an Invisible Man with Chevy Chase. So, I'm excited. And then Invisible Agent is a fun Nazi punching movie. Cause I think the Invisible Man is the most underrated universal monster movie. Hands down. Because it's brilliant. And the special effects are stunning.

[00:51:22] Claude Reigns is amazing. And he's the most evil one of them. I think he kills hundreds of people in it. Well, I know he does. Cause he derails a train. So, I'm always torn what my favorite Claude Reigns performance is if it's either Griffin or if it's

[00:51:38] Louis and Casablanca. Ah, it's tough. I usually go towards Casablanca because that character is extremely deep and complicated. But it's fun to watch the Invisible Man. It's more fun. If you want more nuanced performance it's definitely Casablanca. Yeah. But yeah, and this set's gonna occupy myself

[00:51:58] for my vacation next week. Oh, that's amazing. So I'm going through every one of them. Love it. You're gonna hear a review for each one. They have great special features on them too. Yeah. And if nothing else, I get some of those retrospectives

[00:52:09] that I used to watch on the VHSes when I was a kid. And that's what's cool. They really did. I think they produced a couple new ones. But it's really... Yes, buddy. Golly. But yeah. Yeah, the old stuff I really like.

[00:52:24] I'll talk about it and what we've been watching. Yeah, cool. Cool, yeah. But anyway, yeah, that's Blu-rays. This is what we've been watching. ["Snowball"] So yeah, this is the stuff we've been watching. Zach, what'd you watch this week? Not a lot since Jay's passing

[00:52:40] kind of threw a wrench into... It always does. Any schedule that I would have had. But I did manage to watch a couple of things. So I got the Friday the 13th Paramount eight film collection recently. Not too long ago. Because obviously I missed the boat

[00:52:56] on that wonderful all-the-film set. That's now like 600 bucks on Amazon. It's 200, but that's still on eBay, but it's still not... That's not affordable enough for me to go like, sure. Yeah, I... Because honestly, when am I gonna... I mean they're super limited. I forget how many they made.

[00:53:15] I remember when it came out. I took a chance I didn't order off Amazon because I knew it was coming in a tin. And I didn't want it to show up. Because the male guys, I don't know what this is. It just chucks it everywhere.

[00:53:27] And so I took a chance to get it. Kelly, you're actually crazy, bud. I took a chance and I went to Best Buy Women. They opened and they only had one. So I got it and... It was worth it. Yeah, yeah. But anyways. And also my thing is,

[00:53:42] I don't mind Jason X. I haven't watched Friday or Jason goes to hell more than maybe twice. So like my... If I got those on DVD, I wouldn't be the saddest boy in the room. You know? So... Yeah, those ones I think you're gonna have to right now

[00:53:59] because I'm surprised that Paramount released those ones with the legal troubles they're in because that's a pretty new set, right? This new... No, well this one just has the ones that Paramount owns. They just have one through Manhattan. And then Jason goes to hell and Jason X are...

[00:54:16] Freddie, Jason and the remake. Those are all new line. The only one of the new line available is Freddie versus Jason on Blu-ray. But like I said, Jason X, Jason goes to hell. I'm not opposed to the DVDs of that one. But anyway, my plan was to watch

[00:54:33] at least the first four to talk about them because as I've stated in the past, Jason's my number three guy. And that's just because I'm a dirty, dirty Michael fan. And Freddie's kind of like my second choice. But I will always admit that the Jason movies

[00:54:49] are endlessly entertaining and immensely watchable. So I rewatched Friday the 13th, part one, or just Friday the 13th for the first time in HD. I still like the movie. I think it's great. If we're talking about Sean Cunningham's work, I think it's my favorite of his work.

[00:55:04] That's kind of a narrow scope. But... He kind of transitioned to a producer. I don't know how much he directed. Deep Star 6 and... He was more of a producer before even Friday. And then he did a little directing with the house and Deep 6 Rising.

[00:55:18] And then he kind of moved off of it. Yeah, I don't think he's directed anything in a while. Because he's living on fat money, son. I would. But so anyway, rewatching it now for the first time in HD. I would love it. It looked great.

[00:55:34] The transfers are great. This is the paramount transfer where I was like this looks good. Because they didn't do a good job on my vision impossible one-one. But... Solid film, you've never seen it. Bunch of teens are getting killed at a camp that's being reopened.

[00:55:49] You find out that the camps cursed. A death curse. A death curse. Walt Gourney. Walt Gourney. Yeah, love Ralph. Crazy Ralph. But the thing that I noticed in HD on this one is that like so with HD you get vivid color.

[00:56:06] Like all that stuff on Blu-ray for like the upgrades and stuff. When they do a restoration. I don't think this is 4K. This looks more like they just got it up to speed with the Blu-ray. But all the kill sequences that are in brighter light,

[00:56:23] you can see Tom Savini's makeup. Yeah, the makeup doesn't blend it in as well. And it's sure I'm just a product of the time. It is. And it's not a detriment or an insult to Tom Savini's work because it still looks amazing.

[00:56:34] It's just that it was the first time I ever noticed the lines on Kevin Bacon's torso for when they shoved the arrow through them. I always noticed it on Anne. Is Annie the girl killed at the beginning? Very beginning, gets her throat slashed. What's her name?

[00:56:50] I know what you're talking about. It's the hitchhiking work trying to get to town. You can see the neck application on it. I kinda did but I didn't notice it as much as obviously Kevin Bacon's is like out there. Like you can clearly see it.

[00:57:02] And then also the girl he was sleeping with. When she gets it I can see her thing a lot more clear. But the decapitation works just fine as long as you haven't seen crystal like memories and remember that it's Tom Savini's hands grasping

[00:57:19] at the headless body of Pamela Voorhees and not Betsy Palmer's. But also I forgot Betsy Palmer's scares the crap out of me. Yeah, we were talking earlier this week. You can actually see her on the cabin. So it kinda spoils it because it has higher resolution. Right.

[00:57:39] And it doesn't matter if you change like the backlighting on your TV and whatnot. You're still gonna see it. Like I fudged around with the features on my TV to be like, can I get this to not do that?

[00:57:50] And it might be too because I know it so well so when I see the blue sweater and the blonde hair I might automatically default to that. Well even like big fans are obviously gonna know that stuff going in and whatnot. But yeah, no, I still like it.

[00:58:03] I've got all day tomorrow to try to catch up on some more. I'm excited to watch part two again. Part four I've watched. I watched four and eight the most because I watched them like each like four times. What I've always said,

[00:58:17] I think four is the ultimate Friday the 13th film between nudity, senseless killing and Amin Jason. I think six is the best film. But the ultimate Friday the 13th is part four. Right. I like six a lot for the same reasons just because it's done very well.

[00:58:35] It's the best made one for sure. I like eight because it's ridiculous too. Seven is interesting but there's a better cut out there that we'll never get. Seven I'm torn. I think the direction is sloppy. I think Bickler's a horrible director.

[00:58:48] But I just wanna see what he was gonna do with those kills. Yeah, but the Jason and the Gore is amazing. Yeah, no and it was the first Kane Hotter that we got. Exactly. Obviously we're indebted to it. And then I went to the Alamo Film Club

[00:59:05] the day after we recorded last week's episode and I saw King Cohen, which is the documentary about Larry Cohen, the director of the It's Alive trilogy, Black Caesar, which is a film that Brad and I saw at the Esquire Midnights a couple years back,

[00:59:22] and I had seen it before but I hadn't seen it on a big screen. That's why I dragged him to it. But if you don't know who Larry Cohen is, he's a screenwriter primarily but he's also a prolific director

[00:59:31] who worked mainly in the 70s and 80s and early 90s in terms of directing. And he was kind of a running gun filmmaker and he really kind of emphasizes the definition of guerrilla filmmaking in terms of his style and technique and the way he got certain shots accomplished.

[00:59:50] One of his most prolific films, I think, is probably Cue the Wing Serpent in terms of just like how many people probably... We can get that for nine bucks from Screamback. I know and it's a pretty decent transfer from what I've heard but...

[01:00:02] Yeah, you can borrow it if you want. But they talk about a story that I'd never heard about that film before and it's actually really amazing is that there's a scene where the serpent is supposed to be circling around the Christ or kind of like what not.

[01:00:14] Well, they were doing renovation work at the top of that tower and so they paid the window washers to hold the fake machine guns and stuff and fire out and around like mad men. It caught the attention of the cops

[01:00:28] and among the cops that were asked to come to the scene were cops who were working the set of trading places by John Landis and it scared the city of New York so much that they had to put an added variety apologizing that they scared New York City

[01:00:42] and they make a good point in the documentary like half the stuff Larry did on set, you can't do anymore because of 9-Eleven because of the fact that we are tight-knit and security nowadays. But it was uplifting to watch that film

[01:00:58] in the respect of like if you are an aspiring filmmaker of any type or fashion, this is a guy to look up to regardless if you wanna do the work that he does in terms of genre is primarily his shtick. This guy you wanna look up to

[01:01:14] because it's a perfect example of dedication. Like you don't wanna know how prolific this guy is. Martin Scorsese is in the documentary and he praises the shit out of Larry Cohen for being one of the last people to use a Bernard Herman score along with him

[01:01:31] but also just the way Larry did things. Like I mean he was in charge of Bernard Herman's funeral and this is the guy who did the Psycho score and the Citizen Can't Score and his last one was Taxi Driver but his second to last was It's Alive

[01:01:46] which is a wonderful score and he was allowed to do anything he wanted on that score because Larry just said like I don't care, do whatever the fuck you wanna do. You're the genius, not me. So it's not getting a traditional theatrical release this documentary.

[01:02:02] Steve programmed it because he thought it would be a fun watch for the group and I love talking about it with him afterwards but you can get it I believe now on VOD and then in September you can get it on Blu-ray

[01:02:15] but it is one of the most fun documentaries I've seen this year. It definitely is a contention for film explosion because I appreciated it that much. A lot of people had a lot of nice things to say. They also talk a lot about phone booth

[01:02:29] and how phone booth, the voice of the guy over the phone that Colin Farrell's talking to. Keep yourself up. Well the original guy wasn't working so he told Joe Schumacher like hey, I don't think this is working. Joe said you sure? Like yeah, okay.

[01:02:44] That's when Joe Schumacher called in Keith or Sutherland to do it. So you know. And then we watched that movie like Keith or Sutherland's great in that voice. Keith or Sutherland's always great. Yeah but this isn't even him on screen. It's a voice performance.

[01:02:55] And that's a testament to Larry's script. Cause that script is fucking great. I love what I like about the movie too. It's really short. It's like right to the point. Yeah it doesn't mishmash with words the way I do. But yeah, it's a great documentary.

[01:03:10] I'm glad he's still around to talk about this stuff too because it's like he's among those filmmakers who I wanna hear every story possible before we lose him. So yeah. And then this isn't a film but it's related tangentially to us.

[01:03:27] I got to see the great podcast of 1939 which was a live Denver show with Hal Rayl, Maggie Roswell and Comic Con real nerds guest Brian Cummings, all voice artists in the area. Don't worry that interview might be coming. And that they basically did a recreation

[01:03:46] of old time radio in a spin the dial format. So basically they do many versions of different types of radio programs you would have heard back in the day. So they did a soap opera, they did a teenage dating one, they did a wonderful Maltese Falcon spoof

[01:04:03] called the Maltese clock, cuckoo clock. And but they kind of like move in and out of it. It's a wonderful production. You would wanna see it live. I know they're gonna release it. They're gonna try to release an audio version of it

[01:04:20] at some point but the live version is awesome because you get to see them work the sound effects which is essential to that kind of performing. And you also kinda get to see stuff that you wouldn't get to see if you're just listening to it on the podcast.

[01:04:34] So it's worth the money that you pay to go down and watch these guys who are very talented who worked in film and television for years especially in animation like Maggie Roswell was Mod Flanders on The Simpsons and is still Helen Lovejoy on The Simpsons.

[01:04:49] How's the voice of the predator and predator too. And Brian's done tons of stuff where there's the Berenstein Bears, the gummy bears and the stove and Beauty and the Beast. So watching them perform is amazing and they have a local people who are doing the show too

[01:05:04] and it's wonderful. The one that I, and I told you about this while I'll repeat it, the best, one of the best sketches hands down was at the very end where they did an adventure show where it's Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt team up to solve mysteries together.

[01:05:19] And this week's mission was to save Charles Lindberg from being brainwashed by Hitler. Which if you know Charles Lindbergh history, that's it's kind of layered in all its course. It's a deep cut. But one of the funniest lines is they, the guy who's playing Hitler

[01:05:35] makes Hitler sound like Drupiedog. And when I think it's Amelia is winding up to punch him. He goes, please, not in this one because then they punch him and then like that's the end of it. It's wonderful. But so yeah, they're trying to do more shows.

[01:05:50] They're part of a company called The Denver Heard. I would check them out online. They're, it's a wonderful show. It was really awesome getting to talk to them afterwards with it too. So just kind of hearing how they got this whole started.

[01:06:02] So but yeah, that is all I watched or witnessed this week. I have a few things I missed last week. I didn't get off work that night until like 1030. Damn. Anyways, I watched Batman Bad Blood, which is a third part in like a DC animated thing

[01:06:19] dealing with Damien Wayne. And it's pretty good. I've been reading Batwoman comics and she kind of makes her debut in this movie. Not good as Batman versus Robin but it's still, it's pretty intense for, you know, a cartoon film. Is it one of the rated R ones?

[01:06:35] No, it's PG-13, but it's, I mean there's people shot with guns and Batman actually, he supposedly dies at the beginning when he first meets Batwoman. Not Batwoman doesn't kill her, but he kind of dies because of her. And so Nightwing kind of steps in for Batman.

[01:06:54] And there's a mystery on what happens and it's fun. It's dark. I still have to watch the Batman Ninja one that Brad gave me, cause he gave me one of his steel books that got damaged. Batman Ninja is style over substance. Looks really cool.

[01:07:12] Right, but I still like, I'm always fascinated by the way different artists interpret them. Especially after, you remember the Gotham Knights one that they did to coincide with the Dark Knight? That one's amazing. Not all the stories are great, but just watching how people interpret Bruce Wayne

[01:07:26] Batman is awesome. For some reason this time, I always, I sometimes I get the DC movies as soon as they come out, other times I wait. So this is one I waited till it was like 599. There you go. And it was worth it.

[01:07:39] The special features are kind of cool. It's a fun movie. I also watched 8th grade, which is an amazing film. Very heartfelt. The dad is amazing in it. It's the best horror movie of the year. I just love how dorky it is.

[01:07:59] I describe it as it's not a movie where you just be laughing constantly but you're constantly amused and you chuckle constantly. The part where the principal comes in is that hey everybody, he dabs, trying to be cool is funny. And then random people going LeBron James, it's funny.

[01:08:20] It's a really well made film. I think everybody should see it. Definitely check it out. It's a, it was cringing at times. Oh yeah. Oh God, like I remember that feeling. I remember that emotion. It's an unflinching look at. Felt you bo-burn him.

[01:08:36] It's an unflinching look at being an adolescent. But then at the end of it, I'm like bravo bo-burn him. Oh yeah, no, it's wonderful. You scared me more than that Tony Collette movie. I also watched another Wolf Cop, which I'm a fan of the first one.

[01:08:52] But did we need another Wolf Cop? I think we do. Because the first Wolf Cop is actually pretty good until about the last 30 minutes and gets really weird. That's what Brad keeps saying. You haven't watched it yet. And I'll let you borrow both of them.

[01:09:05] And then, so this one kind of takes place with lizard people. It's really weird, but you know, the cop's still a werewolf and he's still killing people. And Kevin Smith is in it and he plays the mayor. Are you serious? And he's pretty funny.

[01:09:19] Oh, now I have to. Oh yeah, if you're a guys, because Kevin Smith fan, it's cool seeing him play. I don't see him in everything he cameos in, but that just sounds awesome. I thought it was a cameo too.

[01:09:29] He's not in it a lot, but it's more than a cameo. But it's more than you'd think. Exactly. So he has one scene where his first scene, he just rambles on for about five minutes. And then he comes back a little later and he,

[01:09:45] I can't even describe this film. Yeah, no, okay. You know they have the double feature at Best Buy for like 15 bucks. I think I might just pick it up. Or if you want to borrow it, I'll let you borrow both of them. I'm tempted. They're fun. I mean.

[01:09:57] I don't want to wait. Yeah, they're not great films, but if you like Gory, Stupid Bee, I mean Bee Movies, you can do a lot worse. I mean, I have fun with them. I mean, you're saying that as if though you don't know me. Yeah, no, they're fun.

[01:10:11] I like the Walrus movie. I'll fuck you. Tosca as well as a better film. Oh, I'm sure. They're fun. I mean, like I say, they're fun. They're harmless. I do like the idea of the Wolf Cups. I'm down. For Scream Factory this week,

[01:10:26] for my Scream Factory crypt, I cheated. I did the Rs because I got Return of Living Dead 2. I'm not actually the biggest fan of this film. You can read my review of it. I haven't seen two or three. I only ever saw the first one.

[01:10:38] I should let you borrow those ones too. So two takes, like it didn't understand why the first one was great. So the first one does have horror comedy blended into it, but also I think it's actually pretty horrific. Yeah. Where Linnea Quigley becomes the zombie

[01:10:53] and she's, you know. That robot on the slab is amazing. Yeah. And this film, so it's in a lesser director's hands and I hate saying that, but you can tell the difference where Dan O'Bannon is. So the first one, the signature zombie is Tarman.

[01:11:09] When you go into the base and he's like, brains, more brains. That puppet freaks me out. So they have another, they have another Tarman in this one and the way it's lighted, it kind of takes away him being scary. Who was director on the second one?

[01:11:21] I forget his name. He has a great commentary on it though. Okay. That was actually on the DVD. But what's great about this Blu-ray is you should definitely get this Blu-ray. Like I think the film is okay. The comedy is too zany.

[01:11:35] And what I love about it though is when it came out on DVD, which I have too, the film they had to replace the soundtrack because they didn't get rights or had an issue. That was an issue they had with the first one. Yeah.

[01:11:48] So Scream Factory put the original soundtrack back in. So I've never heard, they have like Robert Palmer, Bad Case of Loving You in it and like with zombies and stuff. It's stupid, but it works really well in it.

[01:12:03] It's weird that they couldn't do that for the first one. That's why you hear, do you want to party a lot? Yeah. Which is fine. Yeah, it's fine. It's weird that they can't write to films. Yeah. Anyways, but the Blu-ray is awesome.

[01:12:15] It has what I love on some of the Scream Factory stuff that they end up doing is they have really candid interviews. And so they have an interview with the special effects guys and they go, yeah, this movie's dog shit. They don't say that,

[01:12:31] but the make of effect guy said, I got the script and I said, do you really want a zombie coming out of the ground looking for her glasses and she puts them on and can see? I mean, this is in the film. Right.

[01:12:41] And he said, all right, I mean, I'm getting paid to do the show so I'll do what you want me to do. What? In the underground. And it's, so they are really candid in it. It's fun, but it's a stupid movie. Right.

[01:12:58] There's a great moment with the little kid in the basement of the hospital and the zombie gets blown in half. I mean, there's some great effects in it. But I do love how like even the dumbest horror movie does usually have one moment of like, this is good.

[01:13:10] Yeah. Even if it's overshadowed by shit. Yeah. It's hard for me to describe. I don't think it's a horrible film. It's just when you go from number one, which I think is one of the greatest horror films of all time. And a great satire for that matter.

[01:13:22] Let's put a horror out of it. If we're gonna do that divisional thing everyone does, the ending of that film is genius. Oh yeah. This film tries to replicate it, doesn't do it as well. But if you want to return to living debt three is amazing.

[01:13:33] It's a Brian Yuzuna and it's, Ooh. It's pretty great. Society man. Yeah. So let me know and I'll remember to bring it because I think three was one of the first Vestrons and it's kind of hard to find now. Really? Oh then I'll probably definitely have to.

[01:13:46] Yeah unless, I mean, I think you can get it for 30 bucks but that's a lot of money. Yeah. For that film. But I mean, if they were able to get part two, who knows maybe Scream Factory's gonna pull off a miracle here. I don't think they need,

[01:13:56] Vestron did a great job with three. I don't think I'd ever double dip in it. Right. I mean, they've been making a lot of, they've been making a lot of deals with like other companies and stuff. Yeah. I learned that, so for Candy Man,

[01:14:10] they're sharing features with Arrow. Yeah but they're doing the UK release. Scream Factory's doing America, the Arrow's doing UK. And they're sharing each other's special features so you don't miss out on anything. Yeah so it's just like, it's the same desk. Yeah.

[01:14:24] I also watched John Carpenter presents Body Bags which he plays the corner in. Yeah. Which he, yeah. It's fun. He looks like he doesn't care. Yeah. So, where's my money? Yeah this sounds horrible but the biggest problem with Body Bags is John Carpenter as the corner.

[01:14:43] Cause they're trying to capitalize on, so it's an anthology, they're capitalizing on, tells from the crypt and the crypt keeper where they have John Kassir plays the crypt keeper and he is a voice actor. Right. So I mean, I can even name all this stuff

[01:14:56] but he's very prolific. Yeah. So his performance is amazing. John Carpenter not so much and the first, it's disappointing, the first short is called, or I guess short, is called the gas station. It's a straight up slasher but it's not nothing special about it.

[01:15:15] The only cool thing is, is the dude from Revenge of the Nerds is the bad guy. The second one is Stacy Keech and it's called Hair and that's a little more fun where this dude is losing his hair so he gets a hair transplant

[01:15:26] and it kind of goes into weird sci-fi stuff. Yeah. The last one I think is actually a classic. Zombies come up from the ground. Zombies do come up from the ground. As stars Mark Hamill is called the Eye. Yeah, that's the one that I remember the most

[01:15:40] mainly cause I was just like, it's Luke Skywalker, what's going on? And he, so he's a major league baseball player who loses one of his eyes in a car accident and That's what they talk. And he gets an eye transplant from a serial killer

[01:15:55] so he starts seeing visions and he also starts acting like the serial killer. Yeah. He goes up the ground and then you have to shoot him. Okay. It's a classic story of like the other body parts possess. But it's a good sequence. It's shot by Toby Hooper

[01:16:12] and it's really well done. I actually think it's one of the best anthology shorts or anthology parts but So I watched the movie then I watched it again with this commentary and even John Carpenter was like, it was fun doing it but I'm no actor. Yeah.

[01:16:30] And it's fun because his wife, Sandy Kinga does the last part. So she's only on it for the last part and she talks. So John is talking about how it was a pilot and they're gonna make it like tells from the crypt and Sandy says

[01:16:42] it was never supposed to be a pilot. It was just we have, we're doing horror on TV and we're showing everyone else how to do horror. And it's kind of funny seeing them not really remembering it. I don't know who's right. I'm guessing it's somewhere in the middle.

[01:16:55] It's, I mean, I'd like to get Mr. Showtime in for that opinion. But so the commentaries are great though. Carpenter sometimes he's hit or miss on commentaries. Right. But this one he does one with Robert Carradine who is in the first one. The second one's with Stacy Keach

[01:17:09] and then the third one's hosted by the red shirt guy and then Sandy King's and it's really good. They're fun. Pretty goofy in it. It's the one screen factory carpenter title. I, well actually there's two cause I still haven't gotten their assault on Precinct 13 yet.

[01:17:26] But no, it's a, actually no three cause I don't have there they live either. I have they live on digital right now but I mean I can rectify that in a minute cause I still got plenty of copies left. I think they still have the steel book

[01:17:40] but I remember body bags just being like it was one of the many different anthologies you'd watch. Creep show. Yeah, Creep shows more fun. But and Trigger Tree is one of the newer favorites just because like I wasn't expecting it to be that great. Trigger Tree is great.

[01:17:55] And the collectors edition really is maybe the only, is one of their early, I think it's maybe their second or third one they put out cause they did Halloween, Halloween two and three and then I think it was body bag. I can't remember right?

[01:18:06] Might be Prince of Darkness too cause Prince of Darkness has the commentary in an Alice Cooper interview but it's kind of, it's kind of bare but to be fair the first release of Prince of Darkness wasn't like filled with anything either.

[01:18:19] So that's only bummer it's a collectors edition it only has a commentary in like a 20 minute making of. Eh, you could do worse for body bags. Yeah I mean that it exists is, it's a new transfer so it looks good. It's a strange miracle that we live in

[01:18:33] and also it is a great example of how great Toby Hooper was too. Oh yeah yeah yeah absolutely. On that John Carpenter note though you should check out Finding Your Die where he's introducing a series of independently made Halloween shorts

[01:18:45] and he, the whole thesis behind it is that it's John Carpenter just wanting to shoot himself each time he introduces a video. And then the last stuff I watched is my Keri Grant stuff. You just love that, you just love that man. I do, I do.

[01:19:02] It's fun cause when I go to Barnes and Noble they actually have the DVDs and they're all like five bucks so I'm like meh. So I watched Night and Day which is him playing Cole Porter. Out of all the ones I watched

[01:19:14] it's probably my least favorite Keri Grant. Not that he's bad in it, it's just. He's playing a real life figure too and that's like even the de-lovely movie that they did a few years back isn't that great cause like it's how do you sum up Cole Porter?

[01:19:29] But that's nothing against Grant. No no it's like the movie's fine. Yeah it's just. It's not a character you're necessarily like. Yeah it's, I'm Cole Porter, I'm going through my grandfather doesn't like me. Yeah it's kind of similar to how I feel about the Glenn Miller

[01:19:45] story that they're gonna release with James Stewart cause they're putting that on a Blu-ray in not too long after the holidays and like it's fine, Jimmy Stewart's fine but it's not my favorite James Stewart movie. No, I also watched,

[01:20:01] I don't know I think I watched two other ones. I watched Bringing Up Baby. Bringing Up Baby was the one that I saw on Facebook. Bringing Up Baby you know I remember it a little bit. Clearly you didn't. No I mean before I watched it

[01:20:17] and as I was watching the movie again I started remembering the scenes and the movie's brilliant. It is, it's goofy though. It is, it's really goofy but really fun. And then we're doing it. We're crossing. Okay buddy. And we're crossing across the street. There's, it's.

[01:20:41] Describe it to the people who've never heard of this cause I did it a couple weeks ago but. Bringing Up Baby is the story Kerry Grant plays an anthropologist, a paleontologist. I can't remember the exact. I don't know, no zoologist. He's a zoologist.

[01:20:55] Yeah, yeah, just cause that's how they get. Yeah, so he's a zoologist who's building a Brachiosaurus at his museum and he's trying to get a million dollars grant to help him finish his dream dinosaur exhibit or something like that.

[01:21:10] And he finally gets his clavicle for the Brontosaurus in and he has to go golfing with the lawyer of the lady who has all the money and he meets Catherine Hepburn on the golf course who you find out later as the niece

[01:21:23] of the lady who has all the money and Catherine Hepburn is very zany in it but she's really good. How many holes you wanna play? Yeah. It's a movie that wasn't appreciated in its time. And I don't blame them because it's an interesting concept.

[01:21:43] I like it more now than I did when I first saw it. Yeah, it's really zany. So eventually they had the baby in question and she's given a leopard. And there is, I think my favorite scene is really early in it when she's,

[01:21:56] so she's in love with him and he's supposed to get married. So she's basically the plot is that she's trying to intervene so he marries her. And so she calls him and she says, she said, I have a leopard. And he's like, you don't have a leopard.

[01:22:10] And she says, she trips and falls and I was her name, I forget. And he says, are you all right? Are you all right? And so she's acting like she's getting attacked by this leopard and he comes running in like the hero Carrie Grant is.

[01:22:23] And he's Carrie Grant. It's the leopard that does it for me. It's not that the leopard's bad, it's just that it's like... But there's also like the funny scene where they're trying to sing the leopard to come down off the roof. That is kind of adorable.

[01:22:38] And the doctor in there says, you guys are quacky. There's no, oh yeah, there's a leopard right there. One of those like 40s double-tacted. There's no, whoa. Yeah, it's really fun. There's scenes in that actually it's interesting because that was an RKO production

[01:22:54] and because Hepburn and Grant were there at the time or at least Hepburn was but those, a lot of the scenes with the leopard had our special effect shots because the leopard was trained but like, it's a leopard. You don't wanna kill Catherine Hepburn on accident.

[01:23:13] And she did get attacked by it. Yeah, so like, but there's a lot of special effect shots where it's literally a moment of splicing the film together. No different than when Emmanuel LeBedski splices together two different shots

[01:23:27] to make it still look like it's all in one shot for Birdman. So they're all kind of late, it's a layered thing. But also to send you a clip of this RKO documentary they did on the BBC, I'll just send that section.

[01:23:40] But it's fun to watch the different plates. Yeah, it's a fun movie. I also watched, I was looking at my list, my favorite wife, which is actually really fun. In it, Kerry Grant plays a guy who's about to get married

[01:23:53] and somebody has to prove that his previous wife is dead. And so he's at the courthouse and she went shipwrecked on an island over seven years ago. And the judge is like, okay, yeah, she's dead. And of course, as soon as he marries his new wife,

[01:24:10] his old wife comes back and... Oh, I just realized that might have been partial inspiration for the 100th episode of Family Guy. Yeah. Like not the same story per se. So she comes back and she's trying to prove that he... It's just the air conditioner, buddy.

[01:24:29] It's a fan. So she's trying to win back his love and he talks about how he never really loved his new wife. And it's really funny. It's certainly not a Grant film that's talked about a bunch. Yeah, that's right. Especially in the terms of like the...

[01:24:45] But he is really funny in it. There's some really goofy parts in it. So she's trying to lay guilt on him. Like, I can't believe you married somebody else. And then he finds out that she was marooned on this island for seven years with this guy.

[01:25:00] And so he's trying to figure out who this guy is. And so he sneaks away to the Pacific Club where this dude is at. And he's this really like buff, like handsome guy. And it'll be like, lady, hold my robe. And he goes up on the springboard

[01:25:13] and does like a dive into the water. And later on, Carrie Grant's at his office and in his mind he looks to the right and there's like the dude swinging on a trapeze. And like he's supposed to be like super sexy.

[01:25:26] And then his wife comes in and she says, don't worry darling, here is the man I was marooned with and it's like this really short. Like, and then they end up seeing him. It's really funny. Oh God. This was a TCM watch that I've only seen at once.

[01:25:39] I don't remember. Yeah, I mean, like I said, I got all these DVDs now if you want to borrow them. More than welcome to. I mean, I'm actually tempted to join the Barnes and Nobles thing you got

[01:25:48] so that I can grab some of the Bogart stuff they've got. Well, I can give you my phone number. Yeah, don't tell Barnes or Nobles. Yeah. And the last thing I watched is, I think the last thing, yeah, is Revenge, which is a movie Brad talked about. Yeah.

[01:26:03] And I believe it's on Shutter right now. Yeah. I really liked it. It's about a woman who goes away with her rich boyfriend. She gets raped by his like, skeezy guys. They're supposed to go on a hunting trip. And because of what they did,

[01:26:17] they push her off a cliff. She ends up living and she kind of comes back and it's a rape revenge flick, but it's also shot by a woman. So it doesn't exploit the rape part. So it's not I spit on your grape. Exactly.

[01:26:29] So it's not exploitive of the rape part. And it's more about her hunting down these dudes. It's pretty awesome. Good. Yeah. If you're looking for a super gory, like intense, fun movie, I definitely get it. Yeah. I've heard it's great. It's on the watch list.

[01:26:42] Actually, the Blu-ray is pretty cheap at Best Buy too. Yeah. That's where I got it. I want to watch it on Shutter though, because I know that that's where they're getting their exclusives through. Try to support them. Yeah. I do love that channel. Yeah.

[01:26:54] Only five bucks a month guys. So I check it out. It's fun. Well, fun maybe not the right word. It's a cool movie. So yeah, that's what I watched this week. Nice. Lots of shit. Oh, so you didn't re-watch Infinity War yet? Oh, I did.

[01:27:08] I just didn't talk about it. Yeah. I need to re-watch it. It's awesome. The Blu-ray looks amazing. The Blu-ray is awesome. The 4K, so I will say this, the Thanos in 4K is unbelievable. But he has like a five o'clock shadow.

[01:27:24] And you can see it a little bit on the Blu-ray, but his hands are purple. But you can see as it goes closer to his palm, it changes to like a pink. It's really amazing. Ooh, nice. And the costumes and like Iron Man's armor, and it looks great.

[01:27:41] Yeah, I was curious how it looked. Yeah, but the special features are blah. That's the thing that's bummer me right now is a lot of this. That's what the shadow. Yep. A lot of special features are really fluff. It doesn't, they have like four or five featureettes.

[01:27:55] The last two featureettes are pretty good. But if you haven't seen the movie, make sure you watch the movie before you watch the last two featureettes. I haven't listened to the commentary yet. And I haven't listened to the commentary, but it's fun and the movie's great.

[01:28:07] This week on Real Nerds Podcast, we went and saw Happy Time Murders. Yeah, we did. Does the actual people see Happy Times Murders? Um, sure. I mean, here's my thing. I do not think this is the travesty that the internet critics have been saying it is.

[01:28:25] I saw every article where they're just like, oh, the buzz is that it's the worst movie of the year or the summer. It's not, what were you expecting from the dirty puppet movie is my question, I guess. That wasn't done by Trey Parker, Matt Stone.

[01:28:38] I mean, like at the end of the day, this is Brian Henson doing something interesting with the puppet form that his father created. I will say though, it's not a perfect movie by any means, but I had fun with it. I enjoyed myself enough. It's definitely flawed.

[01:28:57] And we can talk about it after the trailer plays, but I liked Melissa McCarthy in it. I liked the people performing for the puppets and stuff like that, their voices. It was fun to listen to them do their performances and also work those puppets.

[01:29:14] And I will say that I enjoyed watching a puppet, muppet movie of that nature again in a theater. Cause like the last time I saw one was probably muppets most wanted. Obviously different tones of that, but anyway, I think it's fine.

[01:29:35] I don't think you need to rush out. It's probably more of a Netflix watch, but it's harmless. If you've got like five bucks and you wanna laugh, you'll definitely laugh. I don't think you'll remember anything afterward, but you'll laugh.

[01:29:49] Yeah, I don't think you need to see this film. I don't think it's a horrible, I also don't, there's funny parts in it. I don't think it's sustained very well throughout the film. And I think it has a lot to do with the direction.

[01:30:02] Sometimes people just don't know how to direct comedy like that. You brought up Trey Parker and he knows how to direct that. No, absolutely. Like I said, like- But I will say that the puppetry is amazing in it. I, super great. Melissa McCarthy is funny in it.

[01:30:18] There is some inconsistencies in the story. I think that a lot of this movie was edited. Yeah. Oh yeah, we'll get into it. Cause- Like, Jill McKell's character is really funny, but he didn't make very much. He wasn't integral to the story. I feel like-

[01:30:30] He was just there. I think there's a lot of his story taken out. And then, I knew it was like the twist didn't shock me. But there's also problems with the twist at the end. But we'll talk about it after we play the trailer for Happy Time Murders.

[01:30:49] I love singing and dancing. Hi folks! 50 cents, I suck your dick. Well, it's a great price. It almost makes me wish I had a dick for you to suck. Oh, that is a yes! He too were the most decorated officers in this department. What do you see?

[01:31:20] Looks like a rubber gone wrong to me. This wasn't a robbery, this was a hit. What the- Someone out there. Fish killing puppets. Hey, handsome. You looking for some rotten cotton? I'm a woman. That's okay. Yeah, that's even bad. Got a good time for you.

[01:31:39] Gonna catch the bastards who did these murders. Those bodies are gonna start piling up. You're one of the best damn cops I've ever seen. I'll have your badge for this. I'm in the fucking FBI. Oh yeah? What's that stand for? Fucking big idiot? Ha ha!

[01:31:54] There is your dignity. Wish your empathy. Where is your sympathy? Bad cop. If she gets crazy, I'm gonna go crazy as shit. It's not just a fantasy. Kill! God, are you alright? Dyrus should my hymen. That's pure ecstasy. I'm not doing this. Do it!

[01:32:20] Oh, sorry about your dead human friend, Phillip. It is good shit! Well fuck me! Maybe! He's filling? He's servicing a client. Is that what I think it is? Here I go. Here I go. Here I go. Here I go. Happy Time Murders. Puppets and people live together.

[01:33:12] And it's a racial allegory. Yeah, it's... People don't like puppets. Phil Phillips used to be a cop and now he's just a private investigator. Because of something that happened in his past. Maya Rudolph plays his secretary bubbles. She's pretty great in it.

[01:33:27] And I will say, in spite of how many jokes don't land for me sometimes, there's enough of them playing with that detective motif. I'm like, this is just adorable for some reason. That's what I did like, is I liked the noir feel to it.

[01:33:41] Where you get the narration. When I say the direction, the problem is, I think some of the jokes don't land because of the direction. So there's a part where... I mean it's in the Red Band trailer where the dolls are fucking.

[01:33:55] And then when he comes it's like silly string. And it keeps on going and going and going. He stops and then it goes again. Yeah, it's fine but it doesn't land as well. I think the problem is that with them being puppets,

[01:34:09] you're limited in how many angles you can really get. No, I get that. But... I mean like this... And it's definitely... The editing is probably the biggest culprit here for me. And I think that falls on the director too

[01:34:21] because as a director you should be able to fill that in for comedy and maybe there's not enough coverage. And some people just don't know how to shoot comedy. And I'm not taking... I think Brian Hansen is a very talented person but maybe directing isn't his forte.

[01:34:35] Well he did do Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island. He did. Those are very well made. This film suffers from... I don't want to say the production company is a problem. But if you had this under a different studio, something else would have been different.

[01:34:51] But the difference too is when you have the Muppets, you have a clear tone you're trying to set. And vision for that. And a vision. So this one he's creating a new one and some of the stuff is just... It just doesn't work. And it's...

[01:35:04] Part of my frustration with it is actually the script and not so much Brian Hansen because the script was... Sorry. You're fine. The script was written by someone else. It wasn't Brian Hansen. Yeah and that's fine. And like Melissa McCarthy,

[01:35:19] it seems like a lot of her characters cut out too. Yeah. I would like to move more about her dealing with being part puppet in part. That's like the spoiler. One of the bigger spoilers is that the incident that led Phil Phillips to be kicked off the force

[01:35:38] was that her partner got... His partner got shot, which is Melissa McCarthy. And in order to save her, she had to get a puppet liver. Yeah. Which is funny. So as a result, she can like eat copious amounts of sugar and not go into a diabetic coma.

[01:35:51] Which is a funny moment. It's funny but then I mean... I love the moment where she beats up the Russian bear and said like a... went for the bitch comment. It was so funny. It's funny but it's really out of place. That's what I mean. It doesn't fit.

[01:36:04] And like she's really funny. I think her best line is when she gets suspended by the FBI. Oh that's great. That part doesn't make any sense. So she gets suspended but then she shows back up to interview Phil Phillips to bust him out of jail. And she let...

[01:36:18] Was it just... I thought it was just visitor when I saw it. Maybe that's how I read it. I guess, I don't know. I love that sequence though because she's like calling out everyone. She hated in the office and then the last person she talks to is like

[01:36:30] I'm sorry we never got to fuck. And it's her real life husband saying there's still time. What? There's still time. And I mean some of the jokes really did land and I mean my favorite actually line in the movie is I think it was his brother said

[01:36:43] man what bent your boner? Like things like that are great. It's just not enough of them. Just not enough. I... Did you feel that this was an issue at all? I was curious. Is that part of the joke obviously going in is their puppets.

[01:36:59] And like obviously like the way the puppets are murdered is like their fluff goes all over the room and whatnot. But the beginning of this film sets up a really cool idea of a racial allegory in terms of like well how do people treat one another?

[01:37:15] And then but it felt like when they get killed like we're treating that as a laugh but I'm like that seems not a place for some reason. And the laugh isn't funny. The setup's great so one of the puppets is killed by... That's my shadow?

[01:37:33] So my favorite actual like sustained sequence in the whole film is his brother is this movie star that Phil Phillips and he has this like model at his house and... Kellen stop! Buddy jeez. Okay. Callie man. I love you buddy but relax. The Ryan Frost story.

[01:38:01] The murderer sets dogs loose and the dogs rip him up. Yeah that was one of the things I was getting at was like seeing him tear apart it is hilarious. It is funny and then it sustains throughout when the murder scene, when Phil

[01:38:17] arrives on scene and you know they're saying don't remember your brother's way and his fluff is everywhere and they're like I think we found the murderer and it's like this Boston Terrier. That is a great gag. Son of a bitch! It's funny and then him and Melissa McCarthy

[01:38:32] fight it's really good. Cheep of a balls. So like that was really good and then it teeters off again and the reveal of the killer is the young girl from the puppet that Phil Phillips accidentally shot I mean I already put that together and then...

[01:38:52] I at least thought Elizabeth Banks had some part in it but see that's what I don't make sense. She says the former girlfriend of Phil Phillips and she was on happy time murder. She gets murdered. But she denies being married to her.

[01:39:04] Yeah but then she's married to the bad girl in the film. The bad puppet girl. Then she comes out and she's like we don't have to kill him and so she wasn't part of the plot but she was part of the plot. I don't understand.

[01:39:18] She's like I think in the edit you're supposed to just assume she's a dumb patse in this whole thing. I guess it didn't work. I mean I'm watching a film that's that choppy. Sometimes I tend to just try to fill in the blanks

[01:39:28] myself just so I don't go insane. You have to but then there's great parts with Joe McKell. So I love stupid comedy and so there's a part where Melissa McCarthy and Phil Phillips are caught and he's like drop the weapon

[01:39:42] and she does and he says drop that weapon. And there's some... It's already all... Drop your weapon. He takes off his sunglasses. It's really weird but it's a really funny joke and that's why I mean like it's enough for me to like laugh

[01:40:00] but it's not enough for me to recommend the movie because it's just too inconsistent. There was a fun line at the beginning of the film with Melissa McCarthy like I think it's like pro tip where rookies don't actually wear the hat dumbass. Which I'm like

[01:40:14] I don't know I have to ask Ryan do they wear the hat? We don't have it. I don't know that. There's moments and the moments being funny aren't outweighed by the inconsistencies in the script the inconsistencies with the pacing and directing and editing. It's just not enough.

[01:40:32] You know why? Because this film really wants to be an even dirtier Roger Rabbit. Yeah. And you know what I figured out like this morning why obviously it was not going to work is because like with Roger Rabbit you set up from the get go their world

[01:40:48] and make you love Roger at the same time via showing him in his cartoons and then you get out into the real world. You start inward and then you move outward like pulling back. With this we're thrown right into the world and sometimes that works in film

[01:41:04] a lot of times it actually does but in this case I kind of feel like it didn't gel with me right away. While I will say though it's interesting because the puppets are so well constructed there are moments in this film where

[01:41:16] like I felt genuine emotion for them. But it's so few and far between that it doesn't work for me as well. I will say though I would love to own the film if they put a bunch of special features on this

[01:41:30] because I'd love to watch more of what I see at the end which is them producing this film. Yeah. It's very interesting. The plot too is for Phil Phillips to always be on scene when something happens. So the first one is the murder in the porn shop

[01:41:48] but how did she know that he'd be in the back room and he'd be framed and she'd kill everybody there and how'd she know the rabbit was there. But it's okay because they're distracting you with two very disturbing porn sequences. And then how would they know that

[01:42:00] they were at the other, the guy, the sugar place that they would be in the back alley at the right time to shoot. Just too many coincidences. And it feels like there's missing parts in the film. And I'm wondering, it'd be interesting to read the original script because

[01:42:16] this was like a highly sought after but no one really wanted to touch it project, I think. If I can recall reading about this correctly. Yeah. But I will say despite all that we're saying I applaud Brian Henson for doing the film because

[01:42:36] I'd rather he do this than anyone else in terms of who would handle these puppets because he at least knows how to make those puppets believable. The one thing I can easily say is that those puppets are just as effective characters as the humans.

[01:42:50] My favorite puppet was actually the vulture in the porn job. I thought he looked really it's just a cool looking puppet. Of course man we're NSA compliant. And I really enjoyed. Actually one of my favorite sequences was also the one that

[01:43:04] kind of like, it's one of the only moments in this film where I felt genuine emotion for the plight of the puppet movement. It's like this puppet singing and dancing outside of his office and then these like snobby snooty douche kids start kicking this puppet around

[01:43:22] and take his eye and then like Phil Phillips gets him to go away and he's just like, it's this isn't the old days you don't have to sing and dance anymore he's like I don't have to I want to and I'm like that's the

[01:43:34] good I want you to keep moving with that. Yeah. And they don't and that's because that's one of those things that like the Muppets do so well is at the heart at the end of the day it's all about entertainment and it's about show biz

[01:43:46] and I think with this world trying to be too real it fumbles in that man. Yeah. I will say though the kind of like the visual effects and kind of the way they shoot certain things is also interesting as well. I think like like I said okay

[01:44:08] we're almost done. Yeah, I say more or less this is a Netflix thing. Yeah, I agree. And like I mean it will not ruin your life. This is not the travesty the internet saying it is however it's not of the quality that I guess I was hoping

[01:44:22] for. Yeah, it's alright. Yeah. Next week I don't know what we're going to do movies are garbage so I'm thinking maybe a film explosion I'll have to see what the other guys want to do maybe or crazy rich Asians are crazy rich Asians or
